7. Estimating Hydrological Regimes from Observational Soil Moisture, Evapotranspiration, and Air Temperature Data.

Abstract

Evapotranspiration has long been understood to vary with soil moisture in drier regions and to be relatively insensitive to soil moisture in wetter regions. A number of recent studies have quantified this behavior with various model and observational datasets. However, given the disparate approaches and datasets used, uncertainty persists in how the underlying relationships vary in space and time. Here we complement the existing studies by analyzing two datasets as yet untapped for this purpose: a satellite-based evapotranspiration E product retrieved using geostationary thermal imagery and a meteorological-station-based dataset of daily 2-m air temperature (T2M) diurnal amplitudes. Both datasets are analyzed synchronously with soil moisture from the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite. We thereby derive maps of evaporative regimes that vary in space and time as one might expect, that is, the water-limited regime grows eastward across the conterminous United States as spring moves into summer, only to shrink again going into winter. The relationship between the E and soil moisture data appears particularly tight, which is encouraging given that the E data (like the T2M data) were not constructed using any soil moisture information whatsoever. The general agreement between the two independent sets of results gives us confidence that the generated maps correctly represent, to first order, evaporative regime behavior in nature. The T2M results have the added benefit of highlighting the significant connection between soil moisture and overlying air temperature, a connection relevant to T2M predictability. Significance Statement: When a soil is somewhat dry, an increase in soil moisture can lead to an increase in evapotranspiration E. In contrast, when a soil is wet, E is limited instead by the availability of energy. Determining where E is water limited, energy limited, or some combination of both is important because it tells us where accurate soil moisture initialization in a forecast system might contribute to more accurate forecasts of E and thus air temperature. Here we use a combination of independent datasets (satellite-derived estimates of soil moisture and E as well as air temperature measurements from weather stations) to provide new monthly maps of the water-limited, energy-limited, and combination regimes over the continental United States and across the world. Abstract

This paper presents an intercomparative study of 12 operationally produced large-scale datasets describing soil moisture, evapotranspiration (ET), and or vegetation characteristics within agricultural regions of the contiguous United States (CONUS). These datasets have been developed using a variety of techniques, including, hydrologic modeling, satellite-based retrievals, data assimilation, and survey in-field data collection. The objectives are to assess the relative utility of each dataset for monitoring crop yield variability, to quantitatively assess their capacity for predicting end-of-season corn and soybean yields, and to examine the evolution of the yield-index correlations during the growing season. This analysis is unique both with regards to the number and variety of examined yield predictor datasets and the detailed assessment of the water availability timing on the end-of-season crop production during the growing season. Correlation results indicate that over CONUS, at state-level soil moisture and ET indices can provide better information for forecasting corn and soybean yields than vegetation-based indices such as normalized difference vegetation index. The strength of correlation with corn and soybean yields strongly depends on the interannual variability in yield measured at a given location. In this case study, some of the remotely derived datasets examined provide skill comparable to that of in situ field survey-based data further demonstrating the utility of these remote sensing-based approaches for estimating crop yield.

Abstract

Comparing streamflow simulations against observations has become a straightforward way to evaluate a land surface model’s (LSM) ability in simulating water budget within a catchment. Using a mesoscale river routing scheme (RRS), this study evaluates simulated streamflows over the upper Ouémé River basin resulting from 14 LSMs within the framework of phase 2 of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) Land Surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP2). The ALMIP2 RRS (ARTS) has been used to route LSM outputs. ARTS is based on the nonlinear Muskingum–Cunge method and a simple deep water infiltration formulation representing water-table recharge as previously observed in that region. Simulations are performed for the 2005–08 period during which ground observations are largely available. Experiments are designed using different ground-based rainfall datasets derived from two interpolation methods: the Thiessen technique and a combined kriging–Lagrangian methodology. LSM-based total runoff (TR) averages vary from 0.07 to 1.97 mm day−1, while optimal TR was estimated as ~0.65 mm day−1. This highly affected the RRS parameterization and streamflow simulations. Optimal Nash–Sutcliffe coefficients for LSM-averaged streamflows varied from 0.66 to 0.92, depending on the gauge station. However, individual LSM performances show a wider range. A more detailed rainfall distribution provided by the kriging–Lagrangian methodology resulted in overall better streamflow simulations. The early runoff generation related to reduced infiltration rates during early rainfall events features as one of the main reasons for poor LSM performances.

Abstract

Land surface processes play an important role in the West African monsoon variability. In addition, the evolution of hydrological systems in this region, and particularly the increase of surface water and runoff coefficients observed since the 1950s, has had a strong impact on water resources and on the occurrence of floods events. This study addresses results from phase 2 of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) Land Surface Model Intercomparison Project (ALMIP2), carried out to evaluate the capability of different state-of-the-art land surface models to reproduce surface processes at the mesoscale. Evaluation of runoff and water fluxes over the Mali site is carried out through comparison with runoff estimations over endorheic watersheds as well as evapotranspiration (ET) measurements. Three remote-sensing-based ET products [ALEXI, MODIS, and Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM)] are also analyzed. It is found that, over deep sandy soils, surface runoff is generally overestimated, but the ALMIP2 multimodel mean reproduces in situ measurements of ET and water stress events rather well. However, ALMIP2 models are generally unable to distinguish among the two contrasted hydrological systems typical of the study area. Employing as input a soil map that explicitly represents shallow soils improves the representation of water fluxes for the models that can account for their representation. Shallow soils are shown to be also quite challenging for remote-sensing-based ET products, even if their effect on evaporative loss was captured by the diagnostic thermal-based ALEXI. A better representation of these soils, in soil databases, model parameterizations, and remote sensing algorithms, is fundamental to improve the estimation of water fluxes in this part of the Sahel.

Rodrigues (Portugal) BACKGROUND: Countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region are reporting more severe influenza activity in the 2015-2016 season compared to previous seasons. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a rapid risk assessment to provide interim information on the severity of the current influenza season METHODS: Using the WHO manual for rapid risk assessment of acute public health events and surveillance data available from Flu News Europe, an assessment of the current influenza season from 28 September 2015 (week 40/2015) up to 31 January 2016 (week 04/2016) was made compared with the 4 previous seasons. RESULTS: The current influenza season started around week 51/2015 with higher influenza activity reported in eastern Europe compared to Western Europe. There is a strong predominance of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 compared to previous seasons, but the virus is antigenically similar to the strain included in the seasonal influenza vaccine. Abstract

Large area estimations of land surface fluxes can be a useful operational tool for up-scaling local measurements and can serve as an upper-boundary condition for higher spatial resolution applications. Given hourly measurements of radiometric surface temperature from a geostationary satellite, it is possible to derive the partitioning of energy fluxes based on the influence of the evapotranspiration process on morning surface temperature rise. In this work, the Atmosphere-Land Exchange Inverse (ALEXI) model and the Dual Temperature Difference (DTD) approach were applied in order to relate the sensible heat flux to time-differential remote observations of surface temperature obtained from Meteosat satellite data. Abstract

With changes in weather patterns and intensifying anthropogenic water use, there is an increasing need for spatio-temporal information on water fluxes and stocks in river basins. The assortment of satellite-derived open-access information sources on rainfall (P) and land use/land cover (LULC) is currently being expanded with the application of actual evapotranspiration (ETact) algorithms on the global scale. We demonstrate how global remotely sensed P and ETact datasets can be merged to examine hydrological processes such as storage changes and streamflow prior to applying a numerical simulation model. The study area is the Red River Basin in China in Vietnam, a generally challenging basin for remotely sensed information due to frequent cloud cover. Over this region, several satellite-based P and ETact products are compared, and performance is evaluated using rain gauge records and longer-term averaged streamflow. A method is presented for fusing multiple satellite-derived ETact estimates to generate an ensemble product that may be less susceptible, on a global basis, to errors in individual modeling approaches. Subsequently, monthly satellite-derived rainfall and ETact are combined to assess the water balance for individual subcatchments and types of land use, defined using a global land use classification improved based on auxiliary satellite data. It was found that a combination of TRMM rainfall and the ensemble ETact product is consistent with streamflow records in both space and time. It is concluded that monthly storage changes, multi-annual streamflow and water yield per LULC type in the Red River Basin can be successfully assessed based on currently available global satellite-derived products.

Presented here is a summarized and critical report which discusses the process and results of the Project "Rompiendo la brecha digital para un uso significativo de las TIC en establecimientos educacionales: Plataforma de Entornos Pedagogicos Especializados" (PEPE). The Project was executed between 2009 and 2011, primarily in Los Lagos region, Chile. With the empiric results that evidence improvements in the levels of students' performance, in language and mathematics, the focus is mobilized from a platform centered on contents, to the process of collaboration in a community of learning. On the whole, the epistemic transition is given by the advancement from the individual to the collective. This transition cannot be understood except as a sign of contemporary in a society that interrogates itself about education in times of crisis.

Abstract

This review surveys current and emerging drought monitoring approaches using satellite remote sensing observations from climatological and ecosystem perspectives. We argue that satellite observations not currently used for operational drought monitoring, such as near-surface air relative humidity data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder mission, provide opportunities to improve early drought warning. Current and future satellite missions offer opportunities to develop composite and multi-indicator drought models. While there are immense opportunities, there are major challenges including data continuity, unquantified uncertainty, sensor changes, and community acceptability. One of the major limitations of many of the currently available satellite observations is their short length of record. A number of relevant satellite missions and sensors (e.g., the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) provide only a decade of data, which may not be sufficient to study droughts from a climate perspective. However, they still provide valuable information about relevant hydrologic and ecological processes linked to this natural hazard. Therefore, there is a need for models and algorithms that combine multiple data sets and/or assimilate satellite observations into model simulations to generate long-term climate data records. Finally, the study identifies a major gap in indicators for describing drought impacts on the carbon and nitrogen cycle, which are fundamental to assessing drought impacts on ecosystems.

Abstract

Natural IgG anti-F(ab')2 Abs are part of the physiologic immune repertoire and have important immunoregulatory functions. Although previous work suggested that some of these Abs recognize epitopes located in the constant region of the F(ab')2 molecule, an exact epitope mapping has not been performed. We found that the anti-F(ab')2 Ab binds strongly to F(ab')2 but only weakly to Fab fragments. Fab fragments are lacking the core and lower hinge region. In our experiments, we show that the IgG anti-F(ab')2 Ab binds strongly to a synthetic double chain peptide (225-237/225'-237') comprising the core and lower hinge region of the human IgG1 molecule. In contrast, it binds only weakly to the same peptide in monomeric form (225-237) or to a short double chain hinge peptide (225-232/225'-232'). The double chain peptides comprise a cyclic region between the two cystine bridges and an exocyclic region. Previous nuclear magnetic resonance analyses showed that the cyclic portion of the short double chain hinge peptide adopts the same conformation as that found in the intact IgG1 molecule. The dichroic properties of the short and long double chain hinge peptides indicate that they have identical conformations in their cyclic regions, but have different conformations in their exocyclic regions. The conformational differences in the exocyclic regions explain the binding of the Ab to the long double chain hinge peptide and the lack of binding to the short one. The circular dichroism spectrum of the monomeric hinge peptide, which is not recognized by the Ab, is consistent with the absence of an ordered peptide structure. These findings lead us to conclude that the IgG anti-F(ab')2 Ab recognizes a conformational IgG1 hinge epitope.
