Abstract Active origami capable of precise deployment control, enabling on-demand modulation of its properties, is highly desirable in multi-scenario and multi-task applications. While 4D printing with shape memory composites holds great promise to realize such active origami, it still faces challenges such as low load-bearing capacity and limited transformable states. Here, we report a fabrication-design-actuation method of precisely controlled electrothermal origami with excellent mechanical performance and spatiotemporal controllability, utilizing 4D printing of continuous fiber-reinforced composites. The incorporation of continuous carbon fibers empowers electrothermal origami with a controllable actuation process via Joule heating, increased actuation force through improved heat conduction, and enhanced mechanical properties as a result of reinforcement. By modeling the multi-physical and highly nonlinear deploying process, we attain precise control over the active origami, allowing it to be reconfigured and locked into any desired configuration by manipulating activation parameters. Furthermore, we showcase the versatility of electrothermal origami by constructing reconfigurable robots, customizable architected materials, and programmable wings, which broadens the practical engineering applications of origami.

Abstract 4D printing technology combines 3D printing and stimulus-responsive materials, enabling construction of complex 3D objects efficiently. However, unlike smart soft materials, 4D printing of ceramics is a great challenge due to the extremely weak deformability of ceramics. Here, we report a feasible and efficient manufacturing and design approach to realize direct 4D printing of ceramics. Photocurable ceramic elastomer slurry and hydrogel precursor are developed for the fabrication of hydrogel-ceramic laminates via multimaterial digital light processing 3D printing. Flat patterned laminates evolve into complex 3D structures driven by hydrogel dehydration, and then turn into pure ceramics after sintering. Considering the dehydration-induced deformation and sintering-induced shape retraction, we develop a theoretical model to calculate the curvatures of bent laminate and sintered ceramic part. Then, we build a design flow for direct 4D printing of various complex ceramic objects. This approach opens a new avenue for the development of ceramic 4D printing technology.

Thick panel origami holds great potential in engineering structures, but conventional fabrication processes limit their design and applications. Here the authors report a multimaterial 3D printing-based design and fabrication strategy for thick-panel origami structures with push-to-pull deformation.

Microorganisms promoted corrosion has caused significant loss to marine engineering and the antibacterial coatings have served as a solution that has gained attention. In this study, the chemical vapour deposition technique has been employed to grow three different types of diamond coatings, namely, ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD), nanocrystalline diamond (NCD), and microcrystalline diamond (MCD) coatings. The evolution of associated surface morphology and the surface functional groups of the grown coatings have demonstrated antibacterial activity in seawater environments. It is found that different ratio of sp3/sp2 carbon bonds on the diamond coatings influences their surface property (hydrophobic/hydrophilic), which changes the anti-adhesion behaviour of diamond coatings against bacteria. This plays a critical role in determining the antibacterial property of the developed coatings. The results show that the diamond coatings arising from the deposition process kill the bacteria via a combination of the mechanical effects and the functional groups on the surface of UNCD, NCD, and MCD coatings, respectively. These antibacterial coatings are effective to both Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (B. subtilis) for 1–6 h of incubation time. When the contact duration is prolonged to 6 h or over, the MCD coatings begin to reduce the bacteria colonies drastically and enhance the bacteriostatic rate for both E. coli and B. subtilis.

Multimaterial 3D printing using digital light processing (DLP) is challenging because multimaterial switching methods require direct contact onto the printed part to remove residual resin. Here, the authors report a DLP-based centrifugal multimaterial 3D printing method to generate large-volume heterogeneous 3D objects where composition, property and function are programmable at voxel scale.

MEMS resonant sensing devices require both HF ( f ) and low dissipation or high quality factor ( Q ) to ensure high sensitivity and high speed. In this study, we investigate the resonance properties and energy loss in the first three resonance modes, resulting in a significant increase in f‧Q product at higher orders. The third order resonance exhibits an approximately 15-fold increase in f‧Q product, while the Q factor remains nearly constant. Consequently, we achieved an ultrahigh f‧Q product exceeding 10 ^12 Hz by higher-order resonances in single-crystal diamond cantilevers.

Hollow microspheres as the filler material of syntactic foams have been adopted in extensive practical applications, where the physical parameters and their homogeneity have been proven to be critical factors during the design process, especially for high-specification scenarios. Based on double-emulsion droplet templates, hollow microspheres derived from microfluidics-enabled soft manufacturing have been validated to possess well-controlled morphology and composition with a much narrower size distribution and fewer defects compared to traditional production methods. However, for more stringent requirements, the innate density difference between the core–shell solution of the double-emulsion droplet template shall result in the wall thickness heterogeneity of the hollow microsphere, which will lead to unfavorable mechanical performance deviations. To clarify the specific mechanical response of microfluidics-derived hollow silica microspheres with varying eccentricities, a hybrid method combining experimental nanoindentation and a finite element method (FEM) simulation was proposed. The difference in eccentricity can determine the specific mechanical response of hollow microspheres during nanoindentation, including crack initiation and the evolution process, detailed fracture modes, load-bearing capacity, and energy dissipation capability, which should shed light on the necessity of optimizing the concentricity of double-emulsion droplets to improve the wall thickness homogeneity of hollow microspheres for better mechanical performance.

We investigated the correlation between microstructures and optical properties of boron ion implanted microcrystalline diamond (B-MCD) thin films annealed at different temperatures. Ellipsometry characterization of B-MCD films was performed in the wavelength range of 380–1000 nm and the disperse parameters of the films such as single oscillator energy and dispersive energy were uniquely determined by using a Gaussian model. The results show that the refractive index increases from 2.18 to 2.21 to 2.28–2.29 with annealing temperature increasing from 700 to 800 °C and then it slightly decreases to 2.25–2.28 with annealing temperature further increasing to 900 °C, implying that the annealing temperature has a significant impact on the optical properties of B-MCD films. Raman spectra reveal that the full width at half maximum of diamond peak significantly decreases after 800 °C annealing, indicating a better quality of diamond crystalline. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that this sample contains higher sp3 carbon content, lower sp2 and C–O contents on the film surface after 800 °C annealing, implying that fewer defects exist. The results are of great significance for the preparation of excellent boron ion implanted microcrystalline diamond for waveguide based Mach-Zehnder Interferometer liquid sensing.

Due to the fatigue and continuous energy input during high-speed dynamic friction polishing (DFP), the diamond crystal beneath the polished surface (roughness 50 nm) and even preferential crystal cleavage with the non-diamond phase (distributing at the position in micrometers range).

Antibiotic resistance in bacteria is a current threat causing an increasing number of infections of difficult clinical management. While the overuse and misuse of antibiotics are investigated to reduce them, the need for alternatives to approaches is rising. Carbon-based materials shown recent moderate to high antibacterial properties and diamond, thanks to its superior mechanical, tribological, electrical, chemical and biological quality is a choice material to investigate for safe antibacterial films, coatings and particles. Here, the antibacterial properties of diamond films, nanodiamonds, DLC films and a comprehensive list of the composites developed from them are discussed along with a summary of the bacterial strains used and the most efficient composition and/or concentration discovered. In a later stage, the mechanisms of action and the parameters that are believed to influence them are discussed and finally, an overview of the biomedical and food industry applications is given.

The burgeoning multi-field applications of diamond concurrently bring up a foremost consideration associated with nitrogen. Ubiquitous nitrogen in both natural and artificial diamond in most cases as disruptive impurity is undesirable for diamond material properties, eg deterioration in electrical performance. However, the feat of this most common element-nitrogen, can change diamond growth evolution, endow diamond fancy colors and even give quantum technology a solid boost. This perspective reviews the understanding and progress of nitrogen in diamond including natural occurring gemstones and their synthetic counterparts formed by high temperature high pressure (HPHT) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. The review paper covers a variety of topics ranging from the basis of physical state of nitrogen and its related defects as well as the resulting effects in diamond (including nitrogen termination on diamond surface), to precise control of nitrogen incorporation associated with selective post-treatments and finally to the practical utilization. Among the multitudinous potential nitrogen related centers, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond have attracted particular interest and are still ceaselessly drawing extensive attentions for quantum frontiers advance.

In this paper, we propose the new compact multilayer quint-passband bandpass filter. The multilayer substrate technique is used for further miniaturizing the circuit size. The filter has quint passband at 1.8, 2.5, 3.3, 3.8 and 4.5 GHz. Coupled resonators such as the stepped impedance resonators (SIRs), stub-loaded uniform impedance resonators (UIRs), and quarter-wavelength uniform impedance resonators are applied to produce the quint-passband of the filter simultaneously. The stub-loaded uniform impedance resonators and stepped impedance resonators can easily obtain a filter with closed passbands. Using a multilayer substrate technique, the filter can provide multipath propagation to improve the frequency response and achieve a compact circuit size. The proposed quint-passband bandpass filter shows a simple configuration, a practical design method, and a small circuit size.

The resistance of bacteria toward antibacterial drugs is a rising problem. This threat is a major concern for space stations, where antibacterial surfaces would be ideal for materials which also need to be corrosion-resistant, hard and durable. Accordingly, the purpose of this work is to investigate novel coatings that have superhydrophobic mushroom microstructures. The microstructures are made of nickel deposited on a substrate which is composed of a gold layer on top of the silicon. The microstructures were fabricated with UV-light assisted nanoimprint lithography. These superhydrophobic microstructures have a well-defined alignment and shape which does not have any detrimental effect on the plastic deformation of the substrate. Similar structures were coated with carbon by hot-filament chemical vapour deposition (HFCVD) for a duration varying from 30 min to 120 min. Raman spectroscopy shows that the coating is composed of graphite, due to nickel-induced graphitisation during the deposition process. The antibacterial evaluation shows the bare nickel microstructures offer no antibacterial properties despite their superhydrophobic behaviour. On the other hand, the graphitic coated microstructures demonstrate significant antibacterial properties. Especially, 30 min HFCVD coated samples was antibacterial against E. coli and S. aureus with Gram-dependence and dependent on the coating deposition duration. The hydrogen plasma treatment of single crystal diamond was carried out by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition equipment, and the normally-off hydrogen-terminated diamond field-effect transistors (FETs) with different gate lengths were prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) which deposited HfO2 as gate oxide. We systematically investigated the influence of hydrogen treatment duration, gate length, channel length and gate oxide material HfO2 on the hydrogen-terminated diamond FETs. Results show that the HfO2 gate oxide allows the fabricated FETs to exhibit a normally-off characteristic, which is advantageous for the practical application of power devices. The drain-source current, threshold voltage, subthreshold swing, and Ion/Ioff of the fabricated diamond FETs with gate length of 5 μm are 11 mA/mm, −2.9 V, 3 mS/mm, and 106, respectively. With the increase of the gate length (Lg = 5 μm, 20 μm, 50 μm), the drain current density, threshold voltage, and transconductance of the devices decrease, which is due to the higher channel resistance and inhomogeneity of the hydrogen surface termination. Abstract Realising engineering ceramics to serve as substrate materials in high-performance terahertz(THz) that are low-cost, have low dielectric loss and near-dispersionless broadband, high permittivity, is exceedingly demanding. Such substrates are deployed in, for example, integrated circuits for synthesizing and converting nonplanar and 3D structures into planar forms. The Rutile form of titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely accepted as commercially economical candidate substrate that meets demands for both low-loss and high permittivities at sub-THz bands. However, the relationship between its mechanisms of dielectric response to the microstructure have never been systematically investigated in order to engineer ultra-low dielectric-loss and high value, dispersionless permittivities. Here we show TiO2 THz dielectrics with high permittivity (ca. 102.30) and ultra-low loss (ca. 0.0042). These were prepared by insight gleaned from a broad use of materials characterisation methods to successfully engineer porosities, second phase, crystallography shear-planes and oxygen vacancies during sintering. The dielectric loss achieved here is not only with negligible dispersion over 0.2–0.8 THz, but also has the lowest value measured for known high-permittivity dielectrics. We expect the insight afforded by this study will underpin the development of subwavelength-scale, planar integrated circuits, compact high Q-resonators and broadband, slow-light devices in the THz band.

CuAlO2 has been examined as a potential luminescent material by substituting Eu for Al cations in the delafossite structure. CuAlO2:Eu3+ nanofibers have been prepared via electrospinning for the ease of mitigating synthesis requirements and for future optoelectronics and emerging applications. Single-phase CuAlO2 fibers could be obtained at a temperature of 1100 °C in air. The Eu was successfully doped in the delafossite structure and two strong emission bands at ~405 and 610 nm were observed in the photoluminescence spectra. These bands are due to the intrinsic near-band-edge transition of CuAlO2 and the f-f transition of the Eu3+ activator, respectively. Further electrical characterization indicated that these fibers exhibit semiconducting behavior and the introduction of Eu could act as band-edge modifiers, thus changing the thermal activation energies. In light of this study, CuAlO2:Eu3+ fibers with both strong photoluminescence and p-type conductivity could be produced by tailoring the rare earth doping concentrations.

Given the great potential of porous carrier-based drug delivery for stabilising the amorphous form of drugs and enhancing dissolution profiles, this work is focussed on the synthesis and application of carbon onion or onion-like carbon (OLC) as a porous carrier for oral amorphous drug delivery, using paracetamol (PA) and ibuprofen (IBU) as model drugs. Annealing of nanodiamonds at 1100 °C produced OLC with a diamond core that exhibited low cytotoxicity on Caco-2 cells. Solution adsorption followed by centrifugation was used for drug loading and results indicated that the initial concentration of drug in the loading solution needs to be kept below 11.5% PA and 20.7% IBU to achieve complete amorphous loading. Also, no chemical interactions between the drug and OLC could be detected, indicating the safety of loading into OLC without changing the chemical nature of the drug. Drug release was complete in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and was faster compared to the pure crystalline drug, indicating the potential of OLC as an amorphous drug carrier.

Steel is the most widely used material in engineering for its cost/performance ratio and coatings are routinely applied on its surface to further improve its properties. Diamond coated steel parts are an option for many demanding industrial applications through prolonging the lifetime of steel parts, enhancement of tool performance as well as the reduction of wear rates. Direct deposition of diamond on steel using conventional chemical vapour deposition (CVD) processes is known to give poor results due to the preferential formation of amorphous carbon on iron, nickel and other elements as well as stresses induced from the significant difference in the thermal expansion coefficients of those materials. This article reports a novel approach of deposition of nanocrystalline diamond coatings on high-speed steel (M42) substrates using a multi-structured molybdenum (Mo) – tungsten (W) interlayer to form steel/Mo/Mo-W/W/diamond sandwich structures which overcome the adhesion problem related to direct magnetron sputtering deposition of pure tungsten. Surface, interface and tribology properties were evaluated to understand the role of such an interlayer structure. The multi-structured Mo-W interlayer has been proven to improve the adhesion between diamond films and steel substrates by acting as an effective diffusion barrier during the CVD diamond deposition.

The development of simple and highly controllable fabrication methods for the β-Ga2O3, especially for the nanowire structure, has been a challenge. The slanted Ga2O3 nanowires are favorable for increasing the optical contact area and improving photon flux through nanoparticle scattering, leading to an increase in the photogenerated carrier yield. Herein, obliquely oriented and uniformly distributed β-Ga2O3 nanowires are fabricated on Si substrates by a radio frequency magnetron sputtering using the strategy of Au nanoparticles as an intermediate catalyst. By depositing Ti and Au electrodes, the metal-semiconductor-metal Ga2O3-based photodetectors are fabricated with a simple structure. Remarkably, the photodetector based on the β-Ga2O3 nanowires outperforms the one based on the β-Ga2O3 film, demonstrating higher responsivity and an exceptional photocurrent-to-dark current ratio (Iphoto/Idark) of 1.43 x 104 @5 V. This work presents a promising approach to enhance the utilization of incident light and maximize the generation of photoinduced carriers in the Ga2O3-based photodetectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
