Abstract

Peach fruit quality is dependent on preharvest treatments and orchard practices. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of preharvest potassium silicon fertilization on fruit postharvest quality. Two peach cultivars (“Early Bomba” and “Plagold 17”) were sprayed with three concentrations of potassium silicon (K-Si) at fruit set, stone hardening, and physiological maturity stages. The applied treatments corresponded to control (T0 = 0% K-Si) pulverized with distilled water and two K-Si treatments (T1 = 3% K-Si and T2 = 4.5% K-Si). The blooming and harvesting dates, vegetative growth and agronomical parameters were analyzed over two growing seasons (2021–2022). Peach fruits were stored at 5 °C and 95% RH during two cold storage periods (2 and 4 weeks) followed by 2 days at room temperatures. The fruit weights (FW), color, firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), pulp stone ratio (P/S) and fruit weight loss (FWL) were evaluated. The anthocyanins, flavonoids, total phenolics, carotenoids and antioxidant capacity (DPPH) were determined. Vitamin B5 and vitamin C were analyzed by HPLC. The ethylene rate and the chilling injury symptoms (CI) were analyzed after two cold storage periods (2 and 4 weeks). Results showed that the applied potassium silicon treatments (3% K-Si and 4.5% K-Si) enhanced the FW, SSC, TA, FWL, fruit composition and CI. Anthocyanins and total phenolics increased after cold storage period under K-Si treatments. The nectarine cultivar (cv) Early Bomba showed low sensibility to chilling injury symptoms as compared to the cv Plagold 17.

12. Limiting Chemical Fertilization in Drought Stressed Potatoes (Solanum tuberosumL.) by Using Compost: Influence in Tuber Quality and Storability

Abstract

Potato yield and tuber quality are constrained by water and nutrient deficiencies and often influenced by cold storage. This is commonly resolved with excess usage of chemical fertilizers, which deteriorates soil quality. Profitably interventions to manage water and fertilizers rate are imperative. We aim to investigate the effect of compost combined to decline in NPK fertilizer on potatoes and their pliability to drought stress and cold storage. The two years field experiment (2020–2021; 2021–2022) was conducted in the central of Tunisia with the potato variety Spunta. Treatments included 100% crop reference evapotranspiration (ETc), 75% ETc and 50% ETc, two NPK rates (100% and ½ NPK) and soil compost (0 t and 40 t ha−1). Measures included tubers yield, nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) contents, antioxidants and antioxidant capacity. Physico-chemical aspects and tuber composition were evaluated at 0 and 60 days of storage at 4 ºC. Data revealed that 75% ETc (entire/½ NPK) + compost treatment enhanced Ferric Reducing/Antioxidant Power (FRAP) and maintained tuber yield and size, dry matter (DM), starch, membrane stability index (MSI), skin thickness (ST), soluble solids content (SSC) and firmness. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that i) cold storage decrease the antioxidant capacity, N and K concentrations, ii) cold stored tubers from compost were less influenced by changes in DM, starch and titratable acidity (TA).The 75% ETc + 100% NPK + compost and 75% ETc + 50% NPK + compost treatments combinations may be recommended for potato production and sustainable agriculture under drought stress.

13. The impact of mycorrhizal biofertilization on the productivity and economic performance of potato (Solanum tuberosumL.): a 2-year study in a semi-arid region (Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia)

Abstract

Potato is a highly water and chemical fertilization-requiring crop. Mycorrhizal biofertilization is emerging as an eco-friendly practice for reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and improving environmental sustainability. However, the economic impact of this practice on potato crop is underexplored. This study aims to analyze the economic performance of the use of mycorrhizal biofertilization on potato crop production. To achieve this, a potato trial using the potato variety Spunta was carried out at the Regional Agronomic Research Center of Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia, over two cropping seasons (2020–2021 and 2021–2022). The research investigated the crop responses to two chemical fertilization levels (50% and 100% of NPK fertilization’s potato needs) and three irrigation regimes (50%, 75%, and 100% of field capacity), both in the absence (control) and presence of mycorrhizal biofertilization. The results revealed a significant positive correlation (p> 0.01) between mycorrhizal inoculation and both technical and economic performance indicators, including total yield, water productivity, production cost and gross margin. Compared to non-inoculated plots, inoculated plots showed a significant increase in total yield by 44.1% in 2021 and 35.2% in 2022. Another positive effect of the mycorrhizal biofertilization is the irrigation water saving with an increase of 49.7% in 2021 and 35.5% in 2022 in water productivity. The yield increase combined to reduction of fertilizers and water cost lead to a significant improvement of incomes (Gross margin) by 48.8% in 2021 and 32% in 2022. Furthermore, the highest gross margin was attended when combining mycorrhizal inoculation with 50% of the NPK dose, coupled with water irrigation at 50% and 75% of field capacity. These results demonstrate that mycorrhizal biofertilization is an environmentally sustainable practice for increasing potato crop yield and economic returns in semi-arid regions.

Abstract

Context: Iron (Fe) is considered as a major cause of rural Tunisian soil contamination. Developing strategies for the cultivation of accumulator plants with permissible iron (Fe) concentrations is an urgent challenge. Aims: In this study, the effects of FeSO4 concentration (0, 50, 500 and 1000 mg L−1) on fenugreek morpho-biochemical parameters were investigated. Methods: The use of fenugreek as a phytoremediation strategy to control not only the uptake of Fe but also its safe consumption after treatments was evaluated. Key results: Results showed that elevated Fe concentrations did not affect the germination rate, but, rather, decreased the radicle length and amylase activity. The elemental analysis showed that Fe uptake was higher in shoots than in roots, but lower in harvested seeds. The translocation factor was higher than 1, suggesting a safe use of fenugreek as an accumulator. Moreover, the increase in Fe concentrations reduced the chlorophyll content and enhanced the production of lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide and superoxide dismutase more frequently on fenugreek shoots than on their roots. In turn, the maximum concentrations of flavonoids and phenols were recorded under the Fe concentration of 50 mg L−1. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis showed that the gallic and syringic acids were the major phenols produced under Fe stress in shoots and that 50 mg L−1 of added Fe concentration induced their elevation. However, the quercetin was detected only in roots and was reduced under the increasing Fe concentrations. Conclusions: These results showed that fenugreek is an accumulator plant with admissible concentrations of Fe accumulation, which deploys multiple mechanisms to adapt to Fe stress. Iron (Fe) is an essential nutrient for all organisms, but it can be toxic as a heavy metal when in excess. This work was conducted to evaluate morpho-physiological responses of fenugreek to high doses of Fe. Antioxidant enzymes were enhanced to detoxify reactive oxygen species activity produced under Fe stress. High-performance liquid chromatography phenol analysis showed a production of special compounds under Fe stress. Abstract

Wheat, durum wheat, is the first cereal cultivated and consumed in Tunisia. Because the dominance of calcareous soils in its agroecological systems, known by their low availability of iron (Fe) inducing Fe chlorosis and limiting crop production, its yield remains low. Therefore, the search for tolerant genotypes is always current. In this context, the physiological behavior of six Tunisian genotypes of durum wheat (salim, karim, razek, khiar, inrat100, and maali) cultivated on calcareous and fertile soils for 2 months in a pot experiment was investigated. A greenhouse was used to conduct experiments under natural light. Plant growth, SPAD index, Fe nutrition, Fe distribution, and photosynthesis were monitored and used to evaluate and discriminate their respective physiological responses. On calcareous soil, results revealed reduced plant growth, active Fe, SPAD index, and net photosynthesis. Genotypic differences in the response of wheat to calcareous‐induced Fe deficiency were observed and allowed to classify the genotypes Salim and Karim as relatively tolerant. These genotypes expressed Fe translocation capacity (FeT) up to 3 times, Fe use efficiency for photosynthesis (FeUEAn) up to 1.6 times, and chlorophyll use efficiency for photosynthesis (ChlUEAn) up to 3.5 times greater than that expressed by the other genotypes, particularly inrat100 and maali. Thus, the relative tolerance of Salim and Karim is the result of the high ability of Fe uptake and translocation to shoots to support chlorophyll biosynthesis, photosynthesis, and plant growth as well as an important Fe and chlorophyll use efficiency. Abstract

Saline irrigation compromises the utility of agricultural soil, limiting ion uptake and productivity worldwide. Electromagnetic water might provide a possible solution to enhance ion mobilization. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of saline irrigation on yield, metabolism and some physiological traits of potato over two growing seasons. The drip experiment treatments comprised the following: saline water (SW), electromagnetic saline water (MSW) and ground water (C) applied to three potato varieties (Spunta, Bellini and Alaska) since vegetative growth stage (12 days after planting). Results showed that soil salinity was reduced by 25% under MSW relative to SW. Both C and MSW had a promotional effect on root growth. Tuber number was increased with MSW in Spunta and Alaska. The highest values of photosynthesis, water status attributes and ion content of Alaska variety were associated with an elevated StSOS1 expression level. The effective osmotic adjustment with proline for Spunta and Alaska varieties was associated with differential expression of proline synthesis (StP5CS1) and catabolism (StP5CDH) genes. Accordingly, Alaska seems to be more resistant to salinity than Spunta and Bellini, and electromagnetic water may be useful to enhance potato production in areas suffering from water salinization. Abstract

La diminution de la croissance vegetative observee chez nombreuses plantes, soumises au stress salin et exposees a des conditions naturelles d’ensoleillement, est souvent associee a une baisse de leur activite photosynthetique. Cependant les mecanismes de l’inhibition photosynthetique sont encore peu etudies. Le photosysteme II (PS II) est considere un des facteurs cle dans la reponse de la photosynthese des feuilles aux stress environnementaux. L’association de la lumiere et du stress salin parait avoir des effets synergetiques sur l’activite photochimique du PSII conduisant, ainsi a la photoinhibition. L’objectif de cette etude est de diagnostiquer l’effet de l’interaction lumiere- salinite sur l’activite photochimique du photosysteme II au cours de la photosynthese. Le materiel vegetal est constitue de deux varietes de mais (Zea mays L.) fourrager: Aristo et Arper . Des feuilles detachees de plantes cultivees sur milieu temoin (eau distilee), sont incubees pendant 6 heures dans des solutions salines a differentes concentrations (0, 100, 200 et 300 mM NaCl), soit en absence ou en presence de lumiere (1000 μmol m -2 s -1 ). Puis, leurs teneurs en sodium ont ete determinees. Pour verifiers’il y’aura recuperation de leur activite photochimique, d’autres feuilles qui ont ete mises a absorber du NaCl dans une solution de 300 mM a la lumiere pendant 4 heures, sont transferees dans de l’eau distillee en obscurite ou en lumiere. Les resultants montrent une stabilite du rendement quantique maximal (Fv/Fm) pour les feuilles mises a absorber du NaCl a l’obscurite.Par contre l’eclairement associe avec la salinite engender une photoinhibition qui se manifeste par une diminution du rendement quantique maximal du PSII. Cette photoinhibition, due a une accumulation excessive des ions Na+dans les tissus foliaires, est reversible. En effet, en absence d’un seul des facteurs de l’association lumiere-salinite le PSII recupere son activite photochimique. No clear mechanisms of the inhibited photosynthesis have emerged since photosystem II (PS II) is considered to play a key role in the response of leaf photosynthesis to environmental perturbations. The combination of light and salt stress appears to have synergistic effects on the photochemical activity of PSII driving, and to photoinhibition. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reversible effect of salinity and light interaction on maximal quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm.). In this experiment, detached leaves of two forage maize ( Zea mays L.) varieties, Aristo and Arper were placed during 6 hours in solutions of different concentrations of NaCl (0, 100, 200 and 300 mM) and subjected to light (1000 μmol m -2 s -1 ) or obscurity. Then, their contents of sodium were determined. In order to verify the photo-inhibition reversibility, other leaves which were incubated in a solution of 300 Mm NaCl, during 4 hours were transferred in distilled water and also subjected to light or to obscurity. Results indicate that leaves which had been put to absorb NaCl in obscurity showed no change in maximal efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm). Nevertheless, light treatment associated with salinity generates a photo-inhibition of PSII manifested by a significant decrease in maximal efficiency of PSII. This photo-inhibition, due to an excessive accumulation of sodium in leaves, is reversible. Abstract

The leaf-structural adaptative strategies and the possible involvement of the antioxidative system in the tolerance to salt stress were investigated in relation to leaf tissue senescence of maize. Studies were carried out with seedlings of two forage maize varieties ( Aristo and Arper ) subjected to 0, 34, 68 and 102 mM NaCl for 6 weeks under glasshouse conditions. The leaf growth, leaf water content, H 2 O 2 generation, lipid peroxidation, membranes stability index and polyphenolic compounds (total polyphenols, total flavonoids, anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins) accumulation were quantified in three leaf stages (young, mature and senescent leaves). Salt stress impacts in term of H 2 O 2 generation and lipid peroxidation were more pronounced in senescent leaves. During the stress treatment, the accumulation of the major polyphenolic compounds was higher in young leaves. A significant variability in salt response was found between both varieties. The better behaviour of Arper salt-challenged leaves compared to those of Aristo may be related to their higher water content and polyphenol accumulation mainly anthocyanins which showed to participate efficiently in restriction of oxidative damages caused by the H 2 O 2 generation.
