Abstract

Non-adiabatic molecular phenomena, arising from the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, govern the fate of virtually all photo-physical and photochemical processes and limit the quantum efficiency of molecules and other solid-state embedded quantum emitters. A simple and elegant description, the energy gap law, was derived five decades ago, predicting that the non-adiabatic coupling between the excited and ground potential landscapes lead to non-radiative decay with a quasi-exponential dependence on the energy gap. We revisit and extend this theory to account for crucial aspects such as vibrational relaxation, dephasing, and radiative loss. We find a closed analytical solution with general validity which indicates a direct proportionality of the non-radiative rate with the vibrational relaxation rate at low temperatures, and with the dephasing rate of the electronic transition at high temperatures. Abstract

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid epitomizes an entangled topological state, for which two flavors of fractionalized low-energy excitations are predicted: the itinerant Majorana fermion and the Z2 gauge flux. Detection of these excitations remains challenging, because of their fractional quantum numbers and non-locality. It was proposed recently that fingerprints of fractional excitations are encoded in the phonon spectra of Kitaev quantum spin liquids through a novel fractional-excitation-phonon coupling. Here, we uncover this effect in $\alpha$-RuCl3 using inelastic X-ray scattering with meV resolution. At high temperature, we discover interlaced optical phonons intercepting a transverse acoustic phonon between 3 and 7 meV. Upon decreasing temperature, the optical phonons display a large intensity enhancement near the Kitaev energy, JK~8 meV, that coincides with a giant acoustic phonon softening near the Z2 gauge flux energy scale. This fractional excitation induced phonon anomalies uncover the key ingredient of the quantum thermal Hall effect in $\alpha$-RuCl3 and demonstrates a proof-of-principle method to detect fractional excitations in topological quantum materials.

3. On the preservation of coherence in the electronic wavepacket of a neutral and rigid polyatomic molecule

Abstract

We present various types of reduced models including five vibrational modes and three electronic states for the pyrazine molecule in order to investigate the lifetime of electronic coherence in a rigid and neutral system. Using an ultrafast optical pumping in the ground state (1 1 A g ), we prepare a coherent superposition of two bright excited states, 1 1 B 2u and 1 1 B 1u , and reveal the effect of the nuclear motion on the preservation of the electronic coherence induced by the laser pulse. More specifically, two aspects are considered: the anharmonicity of the potential energy surfaces and the dependence of the transition dipole moments (TDMs) with respect to the nuclear coordinates. To this end, we define an ideal model by making three approximations: (i) only the five totally symmetric modes move, (ii) which correspond to uncoupled harmonic oscillators, and (iii) the TDMs from the ground electronic state to the two bright states are constant (Franck-Condon approximation). We then lift the second and third approximations by considering, first, the effect of anharmonicity, second, the effect of coordinate-dependence of the TDMs (first-order Herzberg- Teller contribution), third, both. Our detailed numerical study with quantum dynamics confirms long-term revivals of the electronic coherence even for the most realistic model.

4. Control of photodissociation with dynamic Stark effect induced by Thz pulses

Abstract

We demonstrate how dynamic Stark control (DSC) can be achieved on molecular photodissociation in the dipole limit, using single-cycle (FWHM) laser pulses in the terahertz (THz) regime. As the laser-molecule interaction follows the instantaneous electric field through the permanent dipoles, the molecular potentials dynamically oscillate and so does the crossings between them. In this paper, we consider rotating-vibrating diatomic molecules (2D description) and reveal the interplay between the dissociating wave packet and the dynamically fluctuating crossing seam located in the configuration space of the molecules spanned by the R vibrational and $\theta$ rotational coordinates. Our showcase example is the widely studied lithium-fluoride (LiF) molecule for which the two lowest $\Sigma$ states are nonadiabatically coupled at an avoided crossing (AC), furthermore a low-lying pure repulsive $\Pi$ state is energetically close. Optical pumping of the system in the ground state thus results in two dissociation channels: one indirect route via the AC in the ground $\Sigma$ state and one direct path in the $\Pi$ state. We show that applying THz control pulses with specific time delays relative to the pumping, can significantly alter the population dynamics, as well as, the kinetic energy and angular distribution of the photofragments.

Abstract

Recently we reported a series of numerical simulations proving that it is possible in principle to create an electronic wave packet and subsequent electronic motion in a neutral molecule photoexcited by a UV pump pulse within a few femtoseconds. We considered the ozone molecule: for this system the electronic wave packet leads to a dissociation process. In the present work, we investigate more specifically the time-resolved photoelectron angular distribution of the ozone molecule that provides a much more detailed description of the evolution of the electronic wave packet. We thus show that this experimental technique should be able to give access to observing in real time the creation of an electronic wave packet in a neutral molecule and its impact on a chemical process., Comment: Accepted in Scientific Report

This article presents a detailed study of the photodissociation probability of D_{2}^{+} for a wide range of photon energy. One dimensional numerical calculations have been performed to provide the best possible physical quantities that characterize the vibrational trapping or bond hardening effect during the photodissociation dynamics. Abstract

A nonadiabatic scheme for the description of the coupled electron and nuclear motions in the ozone molecule was proposed recently. An initial coherent nonstationary state was prepared as a superposition of the ground state and the excited Hartley band. In this situation neither the electrons nor the nuclei are in a stationary state. The multiconfiguration time dependent Hartree method was used to solve the coupled nuclear quantum dynamics in the framework of the adiabatic separation of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The resulting wave packet shows an oscillation of the electron density between the two chemical bonds. As a first step for probing the electronic motion we computed the time-dependent molecular dipole and the Dyson orbitals. The latter play an important role in the explanation of the photoelectron angular distribution. Calculations of the Dyson orbitals are presented both for the time-independent as well as the time-dependent situations. We limited our description of the electronic motion to the Franck-Condon region only due to the localization of the nuclear wave packets around this point during the first 5-6 fs.

Abstract

We investigate the critical temperature Tc of a thin s-wave superconductor (Nb) proximity coupled to a helical rare earth ferromagnet (Ho). As a function of the Ho layer thickness, we observe multiple oscillations of Tc superimposed on a slow decay, that we attribute to the influence of the Ho on the Nb proximity effect. Because of Ho inhomogeneous magnetization, singlet and triplet pair correlations are present in the bilayers. We take both into consideration when solving the self consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and we observe a reasonable agreement. We also observe non-trivial transitions into the superconducting state, the zero resistance state being attained after two successive transitions which appear to be associated with the magnetic structure of Ho., Comment: Main article: 5 pages, 4 figures; Supplementary materials: 4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We investigate the flow generated by a magnetic stirrer in cylindrical containers by optical observations, PIV measurements and particle and dye tracking methods. The tangential flow is that of an ideal vortex outside of a core, but inside downwelling occur with a strong jet in the very middle. In the core region dye patterns remain visible over minutes indicating a pure stirring and mixing property in this region. The results of quantitative measurements can be described by simple formulas in the investigated region of the stirring bar's rotation frequency. Abstract

International audience; AimsDilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a complex disease where genetics interplay with extrinsic factors. This study aims to compare the phenotype, management, and outcome of familial DCM (FDCM) and non‐familial (sporadic) DCM (SDCM) across Europe.Methods and resultsPatients with DCM that were enrolled in the prospective ESC EORP Cardiomyopathy & Myocarditis Registry were included. Baseline characteristics, genetic testing, genetic yield, and outcome were analysed comparing FDCM and SDCM; 1260 adult patients were studied (238 FDCM, 707 SDCM, and 315 not disclosed). Patients with FDCM were younger (P < 0.01), had less severe disease phenotype at presentation (P < 0.02), more favourable baseline cardiovascular risk profiles (P ≤ 0.007), and less medication use (P ≤ 0.042). Outcome at 1 year was similar and predicted by NYHA class (HR 0.45; 95% CI [0.25–0.81]) and LVEF per % decrease (HR 1.05; 95% CI [1.02–1.08]. Throughout Europe, patients with FDCM received more genetic testing (47% vs. 8%, P < 0.01) and had higher genetic yield (55% vs. 22%, P < 0.01).ConclusionsWe observed that FDCM and SDCM have significant differences at baseline but similar short‐term prognosis. Whether modification of associated cardiovascular risk factors provide opportunities for treatment remains to be investigated. Our results also show a prevalent role of genetics in FDCM and a non‐marginal yield in SDCM although genetic testing is largely neglected in SDCM. Limited genetic testing and heterogeneity in panels provides a scaffold for improvement of guideline adherence.

We sought to explore the relation between CVRF and the clinical characteristics of patients with HCM enrolled in the EURObservational Research Programme (EORP) Cardiomyopathy registry. Methods and results: 1739 patients with HCM were studied. The relation between hypertension (HT), diabetes (DM), body mass index (BMI) and clinical traits was analyzed. Analyses were stratified according to the presence or absence of a pathogenic variant in a sarcomere gene.The prevalence of HT, DM and obesity (Ob) was 37%, 10%, and 21%, respectively. Abstract

Aims Predicting maximal heart rate (MHR) in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) still remains a major concern. In such a context, the Keteyian equation is the only one derived in a HFrEF cohort on optimized β-blockers treatment. Therefore, using the Metabolic Exercise combined with Cardiac and Kidney Indexes (MECKI) data set, we looked for a possible MHR equation, for an external validation of Keteyien formula and, contextually, for accuracy of the historical MHR formulas and their relationship with the HR measured at the anaerobic threshold (AT). Methods and results Data from 3487 HFrEF outpatients on optimized β-blockers treatment from the MECKI data set were analyzed. Besides excluding all possible confounders, the new equation was derived by using HR data coming from maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test. The simplified derived equation was [109–(0.5*age) + (0.5*HR rest) + (0.2*LVEF)–(5 if haemoglobin Conclusion The derived equation to estimate the MHR in HFrEF patients, by accounting also for the systolic dysfunction degree and anaemia, improved slightly the Keteyian formula. Both formulas might be helpful in identifying the true maximal effort during an exercise test and the intensity domain during a rehabilitation programme.

18. Glutaminase 2 knockdown reduces hyperammonemia and associated lethality of urea cycle disorder mouse model.

Abstract

Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins in the cells and tissues, are of fundamental importance for cell survival, maintenance, and proliferation. The liver plays a critical role in amino acid metabolism and detoxication of byproducts such as ammonia. Urea cycle disorders with hyperammonemia remain difficult to treat and eventually necessitate liver transplantation. In this study, ornithine transcarbamylase deficient (Otcspf-ash ) mouse model was used to test whether knockdown of a key glutamine metabolism enzyme glutaminase 2 (GLS2, gene name: Gls2) or glutamate dehydrogenase 1 (GLUD1, gene name: Glud1) could rescue the hyperammonemia and associated lethality induced by a high protein diet. We found that reduced hepatic expression of Gls2 but not Glud1 by AAV8-mediated delivery of a short hairpin RNA in Otcspf-ash mice diminished hyperammonemia and reduced lethality. Knockdown of Gls2 but not Glud1 in Otcspf-ash mice exhibited reduced body weight loss and increased plasma glutamine concentration. These data suggest that Gls2 hepatic knockdown could potentially help alleviate risk for hyperammonemia and other clinical manifestations of patients suffering from defects in the urea cycle.

Abstract

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is the most common valvular abnormality in athletes. The natural history of MVP is generally benign. However, MVP has been associated with an increased risk for arrhythmic sudden cardiac death (SCD). Most of these patients did not have severe mitral regurgitation. Moreover, ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias are common in athletes with MVP. Therefore, risk stratification for SCD is particularly challenging in athletes diagnosed with MVP. There are several markers that may be associated with heightened risk of SCD including family history of SCD, T-wave inversion in the inferior leads on the 12-lead ECG, ventricular arrhythmias on ambulatory ECG, echocardiographic measures such as severe mitral regurgitation, mitral annular disjunction (MAD), left ventricular systolic dysfunction as well as myocardial fibrosis in the left ventricular inferolateral basal region and papillary muscles detected by magnetic resonance imaging. We report the case of an asymptomatic cyclist with MVP associated with MAD and frequent ventricular ectopic beats at exercise stress test. Subsequent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging revealed myocardial fibrosis in the left ventricular inferolateral basal region and papillary muscles, identifying athletes with MVP and higher risk of SCD. Based on these findings, the athlete was restricted from competitive sport.

32. AN INCIDENTAL DIAGNOSIS OF ARRHYTHMOGENIC RIGHT VENTRICULAR DYSPLASIA

Abstract

72–year–old patient with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and hypertension. Mother died suddenly at the age of 40 from an unknown cause. The patient worked at a high physical and emotional intensity (firefighter) and denies syncopal episodes. During an hospitalisation for pneumonia, an echocardiogram was performed that showed dilatation of the outflow tract and basal portion of the right ventricle (RV), apical bulging and right ventricular (RV) free wall dyskinesia. Absence of signs of pulmonary hypertension. The left ventricle was of normal size with preserved ejection fraction (EF 60%). the electrocardiogram showed inversion of the T wave from V1 to V4 and in the lower leads. He underwent a coronary CT scan, which was negative. In view of the clinical findings, cardiac MRI was requested, which showed severe dilatation of the free wall of RV, which was dyskinetic and hypertrabeculated and reduced RV EF (38%). At T1 sequences, diffuse and trasmural late gadolinium enahcement of the RV free wall. The Holter ECG recorded 773 monomorphic ventricular extrasystoles. The patient underwent genetic analysis, which is still in progress. This is an established case of arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia that was accidentally diagnosed at an advanced age. This finding is unexpected as such a benign prognosis has rarely been described in the literature and in the natural history of this cardiomyopathy. In this particular situation, it is also very difficult to choose the best management strategy even in light of the recently published new guidelines.

37. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children: Moving forward with divergent perspectives.

Abstract

Current controversy about diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reflects the divergence between developmental and non-developmental approaches. While there is growing evidence for biological vulnerabilities associated with ADHD, we believe that environmental factors, including early problems in parental attachment, are also important in determining the type and timing of deficit that a child develops, the risk to academic and social performance and eventual outcome. We warm against labelling children with ADHD simply because they fulfil the cross-sectional diagnostic symptom criteria of the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders - 4th edition (DSM-IV). We advocate an integrated biopsychosocial approach to diagnosis and management with a thorough developmental assessment to identify developmental factors, such as deficits in early attachment, contributing to the presentation.

42. Growth and physical outcome of children conceived by in vitro fertilization.

Abstract

Objective. To determine the growth and physical outcome at 2 years of age for children born after assisted reproductive techniques in the state of Victoria. Design. Using a case-matched control study between January 1991 and July 1993, 314 children (196 singletons, 47 sets of twins, 8 sets of triplets) conceived after in vitro fertilization (IVF) and related techniques at the Monash IVF and Royal Women's Hospital Reproductive Biology Unit and 150 control children (113 singletons, 17 sets of twins, 1 set of triplets) randomly selected from the general population using the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection Unit records were enrolled to be examined for minor dysmorphic and major organ abnormalities. Singleton and twin cases were matched for plurality and gestation and date of birth. Triplets were not matched. Results. IVF status was not a significant independent factor for physical outcomes, including malformation rates, nor for days of hospitalization postdischarge and operations. There was no significant interaction between IVF status and mean percentiles for weight and head circumference. The IVF group had a greater mean length percentile. Twins in both groups had significantly poorer physical outcomes than singletons on some measures. Conclusion. This study did not demonstrate an independent IVF effect on the growth and physical outcome of children at 2 years of age when matched for plurality and gestation. The poor outcomes where noted were related to the effects of multiple births. These findings must be viewed in context of the response rates and therefore representativeness of the data. The need for longitudinal studies is demonstrated.

44. Can psychiatry reclaim its soul? Psychiatry's struggle against a dispirited future.

Abstract

Objectives: To examine reasons why 'religion' and 'psychiatry', as systems of belief, have a fraught, mistrustful relationship based on conflict regarding the source of knowledge. The former insists that revelation, not rational empirical evidence, the latter's claim for superiority, is the ultimate source that illuminates the soul, not just the self. This tension is illustrated with the case of 'facilitated communication', a method that purportedly improves communication for children with pervasive developmental disorder. The controversy highlights an aspect of the differences between 'scientific' and 'religious' discourse and offers a further dimension to contemporary psychiatry's crisis: the three-way tension between the brain-less, mind-less and soul-less psychiatry. Conclusion(s): The suggestion for a possible remedy is to revisit the source of discontent, the Aristotelian doctrine that challenged the ancient wisdom of the immortality of the soul.

Abstract

Professor Allan Schore's distinguished career as a pioneer theoretician 'scientist of the brain' surprisingly began with the publication of his first volume, Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self. The Neurobiology of Emotional Development (1994), after having published only one paper. The rest, as they say, is history. In this conversation recorded in December 2009, Allan provides intimate insights into the major influences on his intellectual odyssey, from his engineer father's work on thermostats, to his later collaboration with his wife Judy on the centrality of shame in emotional development, eventually to formulate his theory of the development of emotional regulation through the life-cycle. Offering insights into the workings of his own creative mind, Allan traces key links between his personal and professional experiences to provide a deeper understanding into how his model of human behaviour leads to the controversial view that current brain science is in a 'paradigm shift'. 49. Frequency characteristics of arterial catheters - an in vitro study.

Abstract

Continuous blood pressure recording carries the most information on the cardiovascular state of a person. Therefore accurate instrumentation is of high importance. Nowadays the most accurate continuous blood pressure measuring method is the intra-arterial catheterization. However, the accuracy of the fluid-filled catheters raises doubts: the elastic wall of the catheter and the transmission tube each has a damping effect that could play a significant role together. Furthermore the intra-arterial part of a cardiac catheter is in a pulsatile flow, which is assumed to affect the pressure transmission within the measuring line. In this paper behavior of two different types of fluid filled catheters (femoral and cardiac) is described. For the in vitro experiments, a pulsatile arterial system model was applied. Simultaneous measurements of the intra-arterial pressure were carried out: directly with use of a pressure transmitter and through the catheter. Thus the accuracy and the frequency response of the catheters could be obtained and a comparison between the two different types could be made. A numerical model - based on the method of impedances - was developed to describe the frequency transmitting ability of the catheters. The numerical results were compared to the measurements. We found that the experimental results of the different catheters show significant similarities; the numerical and experimental results of the femoral catheter were in a good accordance whereas those of the cardiac catheter show discrepancies.
