4. Investigation of drop coalescence via transient shape evolution: A sequential event based approach

Abstract

While a drop of liquid is placed on another liquid surface, two possible coalescence outcomes are observed. The parent drop bounces several times, floats and then disappears within the liquid pool without producing daughter droplets. This is called complete coalescence. Another outcome is the generation of secondary droplets from the primary drop itself. This is called partial coalescence. Repetitions of such phenomenon as a successive self-similar event is also known as coalescence cascade. In a nutshell, complete coalescence is governed strongly by swallowing mechanism whereas partial coalescence is attributed to slippage mechanism and solutal Marangoni flow. Here we use high speed camera and witness that water drop coalesces completely after impacting on pool of liquid whereas drop of non-ionic surfactant (TWEEN 20) coalesces partially. We also observe that number of daughter droplet generation is a strong function of surfactant concentration. Here we utilise the images to elaborately explain both the phenomenon in a sequential event based approach using the basic understanding of physics. We observe the transient evolution of drop morphology during each stage and find shape wise resemblances with many common objects. Our study reveals some interesting insight on the intermediate mechanisms and enlightens distinctive features of both the phenomena. Here we propose for the first time that additional instability due to slippage of rising water layer from the surfactant drop and upward thrust due to Laplace pressure helps in formation of secondary droplet. Abstract

BackgroundHigh-Grade Serous Ovarian Carcinoma (HGSOC) is the most prevalent and lethal subtype of ovarian cancer, but has a paucity of clinically-actionable biomarkers due to high degrees of multi-level heterogeneity. Radiogenomics markers have the potential to improve prediction of patient outcome and treatment response, but require accurate multimodal spatial registration between radiological imaging and histopathological tissue samples. Previously published co-registration work has not taken into account the anatomical, biological and clinical diversity of ovarian tumours. MethodsIn this work, we developed a research pathway and an automated computational pipeline to produce lesion-specific three-dimensional (3D) printed moulds based on preoperative cross-sectional CT or MRI of pelvic lesions. Moulds were designed to allow tumour slicing in the anatomical axial plane to facilitate detailed spatial correlation of imaging and tissue-derived data. Code and design adaptations were made following each pilot case through an iterative refinement process. ResultsFive patients with confirmed or suspected HGSOC who underwent debulking surgery between April and December 2021 were included in this prospective study. Tumour moulds were designed and 3D-printed for seven pelvic lesions, covering a range of tumour volumes (7 to 133 cm(3)) and compositions (cystic and solid proportions). The pilot cases informed innovations to improve specimen and subsequent slice orientation, through the use of 3D-printed tumour replicas and incorporation of a slice orientation slit in the mould design, respectively. The overall research pathway was compatible with implementation within the clinically determined timeframe and treatment pathway for each case, involving multidisciplinary clinical professionals from Radiology, Surgery, Oncology and Histopathology Departments. 24. Influence of Marangoni stress on the variation in number of coalescence cascade stages.

Abstract

The present work is an experimental and theoretical study on surfactant‐laden liquid drop impact on a liquid pool. When the drop breaks into a secondary droplet after impinging, then it is called partial coalescence. If this happens successively in self‐similar manner then it is called coalescence cascade. Three different types of surfactants, cationic, anionic, and non‐ionic, are used as drop fluid and water as the liquid pool. Here we report how the surfactant types and concentrations affect the number of stages in coalescence cascade. The experimental outcome revealed that the number of stages in cascade decreases with increasing surfactant concentration. Also, we determine that drop viscosity, density, and size play a crucial role while comparing the stages of cascade among three types of surfactants. We also perform scaling analysis to determine the contribution of inertial and surface forces in the cascade. A theoretical analysis using lubrication approximation has also been carried out to justify the experimental observations. The coalescence process is actually triggered by the drainage of entrapped air between the drop and pool. The theoretical analysis reveals that the faster air drainage rate and acceleration induces a strong Marangoni stress for necking and quick pinch off. Finally, it is shown that Marangoni flow, originated due to the surface tension difference between the drop and pool, is responsible for partial coalescence and a number of coalescence stages in cascade. 28. Organ-sparing central pelvic compartment resection for the treatment of vulvo-vaginal melanomas

Abstract

Vulvo-vaginal melanomas are one of the rarest gynecological oncology diseases with a poor survival compared with other malignancies. The 5-year survival varies from 13% to 32.3%. Vulvo-vaginal melanomas involving the upper 2/3rds of the vagina are usually treated with total pelvic exenteration (TPE). TPE surgery carries a 50% risk of major complications and also morbidity associated with double stomas. Central pelvic compartment resection is a novel organ-sparing surgical approach entailing radical total laparoscopic hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophrectomy, laparoscopic vaginectomy and vulvectomy to reduce morbidity compared with TPE. Permanent suprapubic catheters are used if there is urethral involvement but require quality of life studies to assess their long-term outcomes.
