We present high-resolution records of upper ocean temperatures derived from Mg/Ca ratios of surface-dwelling Globigerina bulloides and subsurface-dwelling Neogloboquadrina pachyderma sinistral and the relative abundance of N. pachyderma sinistral for the period 55-8 ka BP from NE Atlantic sediment core MD01-2461. Millennial-scale temporal variability and longer-term trends in these records enable us to develop a detailed picture of past ocean conditions such as a weakening of thermocline intensity from marine isotope stage 3 (MIS 3) to the last glacial maximum (LGM). The correspondence of all temperature proxies and convergence of paired oxygen isotope (delta O-18) records from both planktonic species implies a breakdown in the thermocline and year-round mixing of the upper water column through the LGM, perhaps related to decreasing insolation and additional cooling in association with the expansion of the circum-North Atlantic ice sheets. Millennial-scale divergence in surface and subsurface temperatures and delta O-18 across the last glacial correspond to meltwater release and the development of a strong halocline associated with both Heinrich (H) events and instabilities of the NW European ice sheet. During such episodes, G. bulloides Mg/Ca appears to record ambient, even warming summer sea surface temperatures across H events while the other proxies record maximum cooling.

In 2016 the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 361 (“SAFARI”) recovered complete high-resolution Plio-/Pleistocene sediment sections at six drilling locations on the southeast African margin and at the oceanic connection between the Indian and South Atlantic Oceans. Site U1475 is located on the southern flank of the Agulhas Plateau, proximal to the entrance of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) to the Southern Ocean and South Indian Ocean. The site was drilled into a sediment drift in 2669 m water depth and comprises a complete carbonate rich (74 – 85%) stratigraphic section of the last ~7 Ma. The contourite deposits hold detailed information on past changes in the bottom water flow history in the Indian-Atlantic ocean gateway. Here we present results from the integration of physical properties, seismic reflection data, and major element records. The whole spliced sediment record (292 meters) of Site U1475 was measured using an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner to derive multi-centennial resolution records of major element intensities. Based on these measurements it is possible to derive biogenic (e.g. %CaCO3) and siliciclastic (e.g. TiO2, K2O) mineral phases. Elemental log-ratios, such as Ca/Ti and K/Fe, reflect variations in biogenic (CaCO3) vs. terrigenous supply and variability of the terrigenous provenance, respectively. While long-term changes in physical properties and elemental ratios can be linked to the seismic reflection patterns associated with deep water circulation changes, short-term cyclicities reflect Plio-Pleistocene climate variations at Milanlovitch-frequencies. Evolutionary spectra show that the orbital control on sediment composition was variable over time. During the last 4 Ma energy is concentrated at the 41ka band of obliquity and at lower frequencies. In contrast, the orbital precession cycle (19-23ka) is very prominent in a peculiar high sedimentation rate interval in the early Pliocene (~4 to 5 Ma) that is bounded by seismic reflectors and characterized by the development of sediment waves.

Owing to the lack of absolutely dated oceanographic information before the modern instrumental period, there is currently significant debate as to the role played by North Atlantic Ocean dynamics in previous climate transitions (for example, Medieval Climate Anomaly-Little Ice Age, MCA-LIA). Here we present analyses of a millennial-length, annually resolved and absolutely dated marine δ18O archive. We interpret our record of oxygen isotope ratios from the shells of the long-lived marine bivalve Arctica islandica (δ18O-shell), from the North Icelandic shelf, in relation to seawater density variability and demonstrate that solar and volcanic forcing coupled with ocean circulation dynamics are key drivers of climate variability over the last millennium. During the pre-industrial period (AD 1000–1800) variability in the sub-polar North Atlantic leads changes in Northern Hemisphere surface air temperatures at multi-decadal timescales, indicating that North Atlantic Ocean dynamics played an active role in modulating the response of the atmosphere to solar and volcanic forcing., We thank the members of the RV Bjarni Saemundsson (Cruise No. B05-2006). The Pliocene epoch represents a discrete interval which reversed a long-term trend of late Neogene cooling and is also the most recent geological interval in which global temperatures were several degrees warmer than today. It is therefore often considered as the best analogue for a future anthropogenic greenhouse world. However, there is growing evidence that the Pliocene was not a stable period but can rather be subdivided in several distinct climate phases. Our understanding of Pliocene climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere, and especially in the Atlantic-Indian ocean gateway, is limited by scarce marine records and poor age control on existing terrestrial climate archives. At five drilling locations IODP Exp. 361 recovered high resolution complete late Miocene to Pleistocene sections (Hall et al., 2017). Our research proposal is based on the Sites U1474 (Natal Valley), U1475 (Agulhas Plateau), and U1479 (Cape Basin) forming a latitudinal transect. The main focus is on the interplay between northern and southern sourced deep water masses in the Atlantic-/Indian Ocean gateway during the Pliocene and combines chemical, physical property and seismic methods. Our research is driven by three working hypotheses: Seismic stratigraphies for the last 6 Ma and sediment drift growth in the Atlantic-Indian gateway are mainly controlled by bottom water flow changes Using the sediment archives and physical property records from IODP Exp. 361 we aim to construct and compare detailed seismic stratigraphies for the Agulhas Plateau, the Natal valley and the Cape basin for the last 6 Ma. At all Exp. 361 sites P-wave velocity and density records enable detailed correlations of drilling results and site survey data through the calculation of synthetic seismograms. Our working hypothesis implies that seismic reflection patterns and sediment accumulation during the Pliocene are closely linked to deep water circulation changes associated with climate Pliocene phases. Furthermore four distinct high latitude Pliocene glaciation events have been identified. We speculate that these phases and events have led to deep water circulation changes in Agulhas region, have altered the sediment physical properties and thus may be recognized as reflectors in the seismic profiles. How did the sediment input of terrigenous vs. biogenic sediment components in the gateway change during these events? Are these changes driven by dilution, dissolution, or productivity? We strive to answer these questions by interpreting edited and in-situ corrected physical core scanning records in combination major element variabilty derived from post cruise XRF-scanning. Trajectories and intensities of deep water masses in the Agulhas region during the Pliocene were influenced by Antarctic ice volume rather then by the closure of the Central American Seaway. The Exp. 361 drill sites offer the possibility to inter-correlate different flow speed proxies and to derive a detailed picture of flow changes during the Pliocene. By comparing core-measurements of sortable silt (S̅S̅), physical properties and XRF-core scanning data with seismic features we will tie the major flow speed changes to our seismic grid covering the Agulhas Plateau such that changing current intensities and pathways can be mapped together. Here we hypothesize that these changes are mainly driven by climate (Antarctic ice volume). How have the sedimentation patterns changed under the growing influence of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) during the Pliocene? What were the main changes associated with the instability of Antarctic ice sheets and was the production of Antartic Bottom Water (AABW) reduced or enhanced during these intervals? Was there also a potential influence of tectonic processes on the flow changes in the Agulhas region? Especially the closure of the Centarl American Seaway (CAS) in various phases between ~14 and ~2.7 Ma is thought to have had a profound impact on climate. Changes in physical and chemical sediment properties in the Agulhas region are largely controlled by earth’s orbital variations and allow a significant improvement of age models by cyclostratigraphy. Another primary objective of our research is the detection and characterization of orbital and sub-orbital cycles in the Agulhas sedimentary environment in relation to paleoceanographic changes. The presence of orbital cycles in ocean sediments has widely been used to derive high resolution age models in Cenozoic sediments. Typically orbital chronologies are based on benthic oxygen isotope records (δ18O) that are correlated to astronomical forcing functions (“orbital tuning”). However, the generation of such records at high resolution over long time intervals is time consuming and will likely not be completed for the Exp. 361 sites over the next years. In the absence of δ18O records cyclic changes in high resolution measurements of physical (e.g. density, colour reflectance, magnetic susceptibility) and chemical (major elements from XRF core scanning) parameters have been successfully used for orbital tuning. At the Exp. 361 Sites very regular cyclic amplitude changes are evident in the Pliocene sections, but up to now have not been further investigated. Which orbital frequency do these cycles represent and how do the dominent frequencies change over time? What is the potential of the observed cycles for stratigraphic purposes? We will analyse those cyclicities in the depth and time domain and strive to generate orbitally tuned time series of sediment provenance.

At the 1988 Spoleto congress Ian Hall briefly outlined his plans for cultivating truffles in New Zealand to cater for out-of-season Northern Hemisphere markets. The first Tuber melanosporum truffles were found in 1993 on a truffière owned by Alan Hall on the East Coast of the North Island at 38° 35′ S. However, it was not until 1997 when Alessandra Zambonelli unearthed a 250 g truffle in the same truffière that the first commercial harvest in the Southern Hemisphere began. Truffles were later harvested in New Zealand truffières between 38°S and 44°S. Truffle cultivation subsequently spread first to Australia in 1992, followed by South America and South Africa. Here we outline the scientific, technical and other problems that were encountered in New Zealand’s truffle research programme, how they were overcome, and the successful commercial cultivation of Tuber melanosporum, Tuber borchii and other edible ectomycorrhizal mushrooms.

Tuber borchii Vittad., commonly called bianchetto (whitish truffle), is an edible truffle with excellent culinary qualities. However, bianchetto is often regarded as one of the lesser truffles because it is often sold mixed with morphologically similar species in the Puberulum clade (Jeandroz et al., 2008) such as Tuber maculatum Vittad., Tuber dryophilum Tul. & C. Tul. and Tuber puberulum Berk. & Broome which have very poor culinary characteristics. In this paper we define the characteristics of the commercial species T. borchii describing its morphological and genetic characteristics.

There is considerable potential for the cultivation of ectomycorrhizal mushrooms in countries that are not traditional producers of edible ectomycorrhizal mushrooms . Those countries that are in the Southern Hemisphere may be able to take advantage of out-of-season Northern Hemisphere markets . For example , they might produce Périgord black truffle ( Tuber melanosporum) at the height of the Northern Hemisphere′s summer tourist season or matsutake ( Tricholoma matsutake) during the Japanese cherry blossom festival . There is also the possibility that Northern Hemisphere countries not noted for exporting ectomycorrhizal mushrooms could cultivate those species that are in short supply elsewhere . For example, China might wish to try and cultivate Caesar′s mushroom ( Amanita caesarea) and supplement dwindling supplies in Europe . However , there are risks in importing novel ectomycorrhizal fungi for research purposes and trade that go far beyon those associated with the importation of fresh saprobic mushrooms raised in factories . This paper discusses these risks and points to potential hazards countries are exposed to when importing fresh ectomycorrhizal mushrooms or moving them from one part of the country to another.

Records from Ocean Drilling Program Sites 1057 and 1059 (2584 m and 2985 m water depth, respectively) have been used to reconstruct the behavior of the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC) on the Blake Outer Ridge (BOR) from 130 to 60 kyr B. P. (marine isotope stage (MIS) 5 and the 5/4 transition). Site 1057 lies within Labrador Sea Water (LSW) but close to the present-day boundary with Lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW), while Site 1059 lies within LNADW. High-resolution sortable silt mean ((SS) over bar) grain size and benthic delta C-13 records were obtained, and changes in the DWBC intensity and spatial variability were inferred. Comparisons are made with similar proxy records generated for the Holocene from equivalent depth cores on the BOR. During MIS 5e, (SS) over bar evidence at Site 1057 suggests slower relative flow speeds consistent with a weakening and a possible shoaling of the LSW-sourced shallower limb of the DWBC that occupies these depths today. In contrast, the paleocurrent record from the deeper site suggests that the fast flowing deep core of the DWBC was located close to its modern depth below 3500 m. During this interval the benthic delta C-13 suggests little chemical stratification of the water column and the presence of a near-uniform LNADW-dominated water mass. After similar to 111 kyr B. P. the (SS) over bar record at Site 1057 increases to reach values similar to Site 1059 for the rest of MIS 5. The strengthening of flow speeds at the shallow site may correspond to the initiation of Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water formation also suggested by a divergence in the benthic delta C-13 records with Site 1057 values increasing to similar to 1.2 parts per thousand. Coupled suborbital oscillations in DWBC flow variability and paleohydrography persisted throughout MIS 5. Comparison of these data with planktonic delta O-18 records from the sites and alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) estimates from the nearby Bermuda Rise suggest a hitherto unrecognized degree of linkage between oscillations in subtropical North Atlantic SST and DWBC flow.

The basis for, and use of, fine grain size parameters for inference of paleoflow speeds is reviewed here. The basis resides in data on deposited sediment taken in conjunction with flow speed measurements in the field, experimental data on suspended sediment transport and deposition, and theoretical treatments of the generation of size distributions of deposits from suspension controlled by particle settling velocity and flow speed. In the deep sea, sorting events occur under resuspension/deposition events in benthic storms. At flow speeds below 10 - 15 cm s(-1), size in the noncohesive "sortable silt'' ( 10 - 63 mm) range is controlled by selective deposition, whereas above that range, removal of finer material by winnowing also plays a role. The best particle size instruments to measure a flow speed - related grain size employ the settling velocity method, while laser diffraction sizers can yield misleading results because of particle shape effects. Potential problems, including source effects, downslope supply on continental margins, spatial variability of flow over bedforms, and influence of ice-rafted detritus, are examined. A number of studies using the sortable silt flow speed proxy are reviewed, and inverse modeling of grain size distributions is examined. Outstanding problems are that corroboration is sparse because almost no studies have yet used the full range of proxies for flow rate and water mass identification and that the sortable silt mean size is not yet properly calibrated in terms of flow speed.

Le ricerche sulla coltivazione del tartufo nero (Tuber melanosporum) in Nuova Zelanda iniziarono nella metà degli anni 80’. Per motivi di quarantena non fu possibile importare piante micorrizate dall’Europa così si iniziò a produrle in loco, avendo cura di evitare qualsiasi contaminazione con funghi ectomicorrizici estranei. Il primo tartufo fu trovato il 29 luglio 1993, in una tartufaia coltivata di cinque anni situata vicino a Gisborne, nella costa est dell’isola del nord. Attualmente in Nuova Zelanda ci sono sette tartufaie in produzione e sono state realizzate più di cento tartufaie di T. melanosporum sparse in tutto il paese. Si stanno inoltre conducendo ricerche sulla coltivazione di Tuber aestivum, Tuber borchii e di altre specie di funghi ectomicorrizici eduli di potenziale interesse economico.
