OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine trends in diagnosed behavioral health (BH) conditions [mental health (MH) disorders or substance use disorders (SUD)] among pregnant and postpartum individuals between 2008-2020. We then explored the relationship between BH conditions and race/ethnicity, acknowledging race/ethnicity as a social construct that influences health disparities. METHODS: This study included delivering individuals, aged 15-44 years, and continuously enrolled in a single commercial health insurance plan for 1 year before and 1 year following delivery between 2008-2020. We used BH conditions as our outcome based on relevant ICD 9/10 codes documented during pregnancy or the postpartum year. RESULTS: In adjusted analyses, white individuals experienced the highest rates of BH conditions, followed by Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals, respectively. Asian individuals had the largest increase in BH rates, increasing 292%. White individuals had the smallest increase of 192%. The trend remained unchanged even after adjusting for age and Bateman comorbidity score, the trend remained unchanged. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of diagnosed BH conditions among individuals in the perinatal and postpartum periods increased over time. As national efforts continue to work toward improving perinatal BH, solutions must incorporate the needs of diverse populations to avert preventable morbidity and mortality.

BackgroundMaternal mortality is a public health crisis in the U.S., with no improvement in decades and worsening disparities during COVID-19. Social determinants of health (SDoH) shape risk for morbidity and mortality but maternal structural and SDoH are under-researched using population health data. To expand knowledge of those at risk for or who have experienced maternal morbidity and inform clinical, policy, and legislative action, creative use of and leveraging existing population health datasets is logical and needed.MethodsWe review a sample of population health datasets and highlight recommended changes to the datasets or data collection to better inform existing gaps in maternal health research.ResultsAcross each of the datasets we found insufficient representation of pregnant and postpartum individuals and provide recommendations to enhance these datasets to inform maternal health research.ConclusionsPregnant and postpartum individuals should be oversampled in population health data to facilitate rapid policy and program evaluation. Postpartum individuals should no longer be hidden within population health datasets. Individuals with pregnancies resulting in outcomes other than livebirth (e.g., abortion, stillbirth, miscarriage) should be included, or asked about these experiences.

Between 2003 and 2016, the percentage of undergraduates taking at least one course online nearly tripled, increasing from 15.6 to 43.1. Initially, that enrollment was concentrated in the proprietary, or for-profit, higher education sector. In response, and to make up for declining numbers of "traditional" college students and the resulting revenue shortfalls, some public colleges and universities formed arrangements with for-profit education companies. Private education companies, often referred to as online program managers (OPMs), manage hundreds of online degree programs for public colleges and universities, though the public--including the students and faculty in the programs--is too often unaware. Public-private partnerships can be found up and down the education sector and throughout the typical campus, where they are relied on for housing, dining, maintenance, and parking services. In reality, such partnership billing is meant to sugarcoat what is really happening: outsourcing. In many respects, colleges and universities in these arrangements have outsourced their core functions and shifted control of a public good into the hands of private, for-profit companies.

The national epidemic of increasing imprisonment rates in the United States, also known as mass incarceration, disproportionally impacts communities of color. Additionally, the needs of children of incarcerated parents have been neglected. This study examined whether topics pertinent to mass incarceration and the impact on families are being addressed in counselor education programs. Of the 95 counselor educators who participated in the study, results indicated that the majority did not have training to work with families of the incarcerated and did not include information about working with families of the incarcerated in their courses. In addition to exposing students to discussions of implicit bias and data on mass incarceration, specific treatment modalities and protocols need to be developed and validated.

The present article addresses the production and global dissemination of 'policy relevant knowledge'. It not only unpacks the methodological assumptions of a particular type of knowledge production -- known as impact evaluations -- but also analyses the issue of knowledge mobilisation within the political economy of the global education policy field. Having a critical understanding of impact evaluations is crucial because they are widely regarded as the most valid informational basis from which to make policy decisions. The importance of grasping the methodological limitations and political-economic dynamics that afflict knowledge production and mobilisation is demonstrated through the case of Colombia's well-known charter school programme. By employing a strategy that has been labelled bibliographic ethnography, this article not only takes a critical look at the knowledge base that has been produced on this programme but also maps the way that evaluations of this charter school programme, despite their limitations, have been cited and invoked in academic and organisational publications to project this programme internationally. The article concludes by offering a theoretically-informed discussion of how we should understand the trajectory of impact evaluations (and other knowledge products) as they cross multiple personal, organisational, political, and discursive contexts.

Health research documenting sexual minority adolescents exists predominately in North American literature. However, sexual minority youth exist elsewhere in the world. This study aims to provide estimates of sexual minority adolescent populations worldwide. In this systematic review, we searched Medline, Embase, CAB direct, Sociology Collection, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, LGBT Life, Bibliography of Native American Studies, Bibliography of Asian Studies, ERIC, and PsycINFO between 2008 and 2022. We included peer-reviewed publications that focused on youth and sexual orientation or youth and sexual behavior--youth in this study were people who were between 10 and 19 years of age. Examples of publications that were excluded from our study were qualitative studies, mixed-method studies, and interventions. Publications obtained from the search results underwent a country screen, a title and abstract screen, and a methods screen, before moving onto a full-text screen. We extracted the prevalence of sexual minority youth after full-text screening. We identified 42,711 results from searching the electronic databases and an additional 105 records via hand searching. After duplicates were removed, 32,213 articles were screened and 41 studies were eligible for this review. We found estimates of sexual minority adolescents in 47 countries, with at least one estimate for each World Health Organization region. The development of inclusive laws and policies is needed on a global basis to decrease health disparities in a community of people who are at higher risk of adverse health outcomes. This study quantified the prevalence of postpartum mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) diagnoses among symptomatic Michigan Medicaid enrollees and explored factors associated with receiving a diagnosis. Data sources comprised Michigan Medicaid administrative claims and Phase 7 Michigan Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (MI-PRAMS) survey responses, linked at the individual level. Participants were continuously enrolled in Michigan Medicaid, delivered a live birth (2012–2015), responded to the survey, and screened positive for PMAD symptoms on the adapted two-item Patient Health Questionnaire. Unadjusted and adjusted weighted logistic regression analyses were used to predict the likelihood of having a PMAD diagnosis (for the overall sample and stratified by race). The weighted analytic cohort represented 24,353 deliveries across the 4-year study. Only 19.8% of respondents with symptoms of PMAD had a PMAD diagnosis between delivery and 3 months afterward. Black respondents were less likely to have PMAD diagnoses (adjusted odds ratio [AOR]=0.23, 95% CI=0.11–0.49) compared with White respondents. Among White respondents, no covariates were significantly associated with having a diagnosis. However, among Black respondents, more comorbid conditions and more life stressors were statistically significantly associated with having a diagnosis (AOR=3.18, 95% CI=1.27–7.96 and AOR=3.12, 95% CI=1.10–8.88, respectively). Rate of PMAD diagnosis receipt differed by race and was low overall. Black respondents were less likely than White respondents to receive a diagnosis. Patient characteristics influencing diagnosis receipt also differed by race, indicating that strategies to improve detection of these disorders require a tailored approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
