Abstract

The low-energy gamma-ray domain is an important window for the study of the high energy Universe. Here matter can be observed in extreme physical conditions and during powerful explosive events. However, observing gamma-rays from faint sources is extremely challenging with current instrumentation. With techniques used at present collecting more signal requires larger detectors, leading to an increase in instrumental background. For the leap in sensitivity that is required for future gamma-ray missions use must be made of flux concentrating telescopes. Fortunately, gamma-ray optics such as Laue or Fresnel lenses, based on diffraction, make this possible. Laue lenses work with moderate focal lengths (tens to a few hundreds of metres), but provide only rudimentary imaging capabilities. On the other hand, Fresnel lenses offer extremely good imaging, but with a very small field of view and a requirement for focal lengths $\sim$10$^8$ m. Abstract

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a European Space Agency mission that aims to measure gravitational waves in the millihertz range. Laser frequency noise enters the interferometric measurements and dominates the expected gravitational signals by many orders of magnitude. Time-delay interferometry (TDI) is a technique that reduces this laser noise by synthesizing virtual equal-arm interferometric measurements. Laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have confirmed that this reduction is sufficient to meet the scientific goals of the mission in proof-of-concept setups. In this paper, we show that the on-board antialiasing filters play an important role in TDI's performance when the flexing of the constellation is accounted for. This coupling was neglected in previous studies. To reach an optimal reduction level, filters with vanishing group delays must be used on board or synthesized off-line. We propose a theoretical model of the residual laser noise including this flexing-filtering coupling. We also use two independent simulators to produce realistic measurement signals and compute the corresponding TDI Michelson variables. We show that our theoretical model agrees with the simulated data with exquisite precision. Using these two complementary approaches, we confirm TDI's ability to reduce laser frequency noise in a more realistic mission setup. Abstract

Following the selection of The Gravitational Universe by ESA, and the successful flight of LISA Pathfinder, the LISA Consortium now proposes a 4 year mission in response to ESA's call for missions for L3. The observatory will be based on three arms with six active laser links, between three identical spacecraft in a triangular formation separated by 2.5 million km. LISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using Gravitational Waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. It provides the closest ever view of the infant Universe at TeV energy scales, has known sources in the form of verification binaries in the Milky Way, and can probe the entire Universe, from its smallest scales near the horizons of black holes, all the way to cosmological scales. The LISA mission will scan the entire sky as it follows behind the Earth in its orbit, obtaining both polarisations of the Gravitational Waves simultaneously, and will measure source parameters with astrophysically relevant sensitivity in a band from below $10^{-4}\,$Hz to above $10^{-1}\,$Hz., Comment: Submitted to ESA on January 13th in response to the call for missions for the L3 slot in the Cosmic Vision Programme

Abstract

We report here the characterization (temperature coefficients and noise level) of selected voltage references in the frequency range from 10^(-5) to 10 Hz. The goal of this work is to update previous studies, with a characterization at lower frequencies, and find voltage references that may be suitable for the space-based interferometry mission eLISA. The requirements of relative output stability of 1 ppm/$\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ down to 0.1 mHz were not met by any of the tested devices, but 4 references approaches the objective : the AD587UQ, the MAX6126AASA50, the LT1021-BCN8-5 and the LT6655BHM. While the first three were already identified as potential devices in previous studies, the later is a new promising candidate using a different technology (bandgap)., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report the progress in the realization of an electronic / optical simulator for space based, long arm interferometry and its application to the eLISA mission. The goal of this work is to generate realistic optics and electronics signals, especially simulating realistic propagation delays. The first measurements and characterization of this experiment are also presented. With the present configuration a modest $10^6$ noise reduction factor has been achieved using the Time Delay Interferometry algorithm. However, the principle of the experiment has been validated and further work is ongoing to identify the noise sources and optimize the apparatus.

Abstract

The spectrometer SPI on INTEGRAL allows for the first time simultaneous imaging of diffuse and point-like emission in the hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray regime. To fully exploit the capabilities of the instrument, we implemented the MREM image deconvolution algorithm, initially developed for COMPTEL data analysis, to SPI data analysis. We present the performances of the algorithm by means of simulations and apply it to data accumulated during the first 2 mission years of INTEGRAL. Skymaps are presented for the 1809 keV gamma-ray line, attributed to the radioactive decay of 26Al, and for continuum energy bands, covering the range 20 keV - 3 MeV. The 1809 keV map indicates that emission is clearly detected by SPI from the inner Galactic radian and from the Cygnus region. The continuum maps reveal the transition between a point-source dominated hard X-ray sky to a diffuse emission dominated soft gamma-ray sky. From the skymaps, we extract a Galactic ridge emission spectrum that matches well SPI results obtained by model fitting. By comparing our spectrum with the cumulative flux measured by IBIS from point sources, we find indications for the existence of an unresolved or diffuse emission component above ~100 keV., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The Mock LISA Data Challenges are a program to demonstrate LISA data-analysis capabilities and to encourage their development. Each round of challenges consists of several data sets containing simulated instrument noise and gravitational-wave sources of undisclosed parameters. Participants are asked to analyze the data sets and report the maximum information about source parameters. Abstract

Gamma-rays from radioactive 26Al (half life ~7.2 10^5 yr) provide a 'snapshot' view of ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The Galaxy is relatively transparent to such gamma-rays, and emission has been found concentrated along the plane of the Galaxy. This led to the conclusion1 that massive stars throughout the Galaxy dominate the production of 26Al. On the other hand, meteoritic data show locally-produced 26Al, perhaps from spallation reactions in the protosolar disk. Furthermore, prominent gamma-ray emission from the Cygnus region suggests that a substantial fraction of Galactic 26Al could originate in localized star-forming regions. Here we report high spectral resolution measurements of 26Al emission at 1808.65 keV, which demonstrate that the 26Al source regions corotate with the Galaxy, supporting its Galaxy-wide origin. We determine a present-day equilibrium mass of 2.8 (+/-0.8) M_sol of 26Al. We use this to estimate that the frequency of core collapse (i.e. type Ib/c and type II) supernovae to be 1.9(+/- 1.1) events per century., Comment: accepted for publication in Nature, 24 pages including Online Supplements, 11 figures, 1 table

15. Relative-Intensity-Noise Coupling in Heterodyne Interferometers

Abstract

Laser interferometers are the core measurement tool in gravitational wave observatories. An important factor that can limit the performance is the relative power instability of the laser, a problem often called relative intensity noise (RIN). But exactly how this influences the interferometer performance is not completely understood. Therefore in this paper we analyze laser RIN coupling into the phase readout in balanced and unbalanced heterodyne interferometers. We describe the coupling theoretically, then simulate and finally measure it. Our results reveal a combination of RIN contributions from the heterodyne frequency and twice the heterodyne frequency in the interferometric phase readout. We also show that when an additional, correlated reference measurement is subtracted the combined coupling factor depends on the differential phase between the two measurements and thus can be minimized. Our results have implications for noise models in future space-based gravitational wave observatories like Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, where RIN-to-phase coupling arises directly and is modulated via spacecraft jitter, testmass position and orientation.

Abstract

International audience; Seismometers are now likely to be placed on other planets and a seismic return on the Moon is currently considered. Indeed, the Apollo seismometers had a good sensitivity : 60 pm/√Hz at 1 Hz but were however unable to detect all the seismic signals produced by the Moon, like the 'lunar continuous meteoritic hum'. The different core seismic phases, although detected through stacking, have not also been individually recorded. A new generation of broadband planetary seismometers, 100 to 1000 times more sensitive than the Apollo ones is thus required. The idea consists in using the gravitational waves detectors' technology which are the reference in terms of interferometric measurements at low frequency and very low noise levels in order to improve the performances (linearity and noise level) of the seismometers' mass displacement sensors. The final objective is to reach a sensitivity of 40 fm//√Hz at 1 Hz. An optical readout is proposed, based on the Pound-Drever Hall laser frequency stabilization method, and the preliminary theoretical and experimental results show a sensitivity of 12.8 fm/√Hz at 1 Hz in the worst case by only considering the optical and mechanical parts.

Abstract

Beyond X-rays, gamma-ray astrophysics provides a unique probe to study the most energetic phenomena in the Universe. Due to the difficulty of detecting cosmic gamma-rays, current technologies seem to have reach their limits. To overcome this issue, gamma-rays focusing appears now to be a promising way. The CLAIRE project is dedicated to demonstrating the interest of a gamm-ray lens for nuclear astrophysics, as well as measuring the performance of such an instrument and compare them to the theoretical predictions. According to the laws of gamma-rays diffraction in crystal, the first lens for nuclear astrophysics had been developed at the CESR. The lens consist of about 560 germanium crystals, mounted on 8 concentric rings, diffracting an energy bandwidth of about 3 keV centered at 170 keV. The tuning of this lens in the laboratory required the development of specific systems and procedures. Besides, the data collected during this tuning allowed the determination of crystal characteristics, which were used for numerical simulations of the gamma-ray lens. The gamma ray lens principle had also been tested by ground based measurements and by an observation of the Crab Nebula during a stratospheric flight. Ground based measurements, in the laboratory and with a source at a long distance, allowed the determination of the diffraction efficiency as well as the angular response. These results, in agreement with the numerical expectations, demonstrate the validity of the gamma-ray lens principles. The analysis of the data obtained during the baloon flight lead to a 3 sigma detection of the diffracted signal. The results of the various experiments, on the ground and during the stratospheric flight, agree for a diffraction efficiency of 9±1% at 170 keV. In good agreement with the predictions, these results validate the concept of a gamma-ray lens for nuclear astrophysics and are the first steps to the development of a space instrument.; À l'extrémité du spectre électromagnétique observé, l'astrophysique gamma étudie les traces des phénomènes les plus violents de notre univers. Grâce aux instruments toujours plus perfectionnés, la recherche dans cette branche de l'astronomie est entrée dans un âge d'or, où les résultats quantitatifs et prédictifs ont succédé aux découvertes pionnières. Néanmoins, les techniques actuellement utilisées semblent avoir atteint leur limites avec la dernière génération de satellites d'observation. De nouveaux instruments gamma doivent donc être développés afin d'atteindre les résolutions angulaires et les sensibilités nécessaires à la confrontation des observations avec les prédictions théoriques. Afin de franchir cette nouvelle étape, la focalisation des rayonnements gamma offre une voie aujourd'hui prometteuse. Dans cette optique, le projet CLAIRE a pour objectif de démontrer la faisabilité d'une lentille gamma pour l'astrophysique nucléaire, ainsi que de quantifier les performances d'un tel instrument et les comparer aux principes théoriques.À partir des lois de la diffraction des rayons dans les cristaux, une lentille a donc été développée et mise au point au CESR. Cette intrument, focalisant une bande énergétique de quelques keV centrée sur 170 keV, est constituée d'environ 560 cristaux de germanium disposés sur 8 anneaux concentriques, dont le réglage en laboratoire a nécessité la mise en place de procédures et systèmes spécifiques. D'autre part, les mesures récoltées lors de ce réglage ont permis de déterminer différents paramètres cristallins, servant ensuite d'initialisation aux simulations numériques.La validité du principe de lentille gamma a alors été testée par des mesures au sol ainsi que par une observation effectuée sur la nébuleuse du Crabe sous ballon stratosphérique. Les mesures sol ont permis de déterminer l'efficacité de diffraction de la lentille ainsi que sa réponse hors axe. Ces résultats valident les principes à la base de la lentille gamma. D'autre part, le 14 juin 2001, la lentille gamma a été embarquée sous ballon stratosphérique, à 41 km d'altitude. Suite au traitement des données, le signal diffracté a pu être mis en évidence avec un niveau de confiance de 3 sigmas, correspondant à une détection d'environ 33 photons pendant une observation effective d'1h12.Les différentes expériences, tant au sol que pendant le vol stratosphérique, s'accordent sur une efficacité de 10% à 170 keV. Conformes aux prédictions, ces résultats valident le concept de lentille pour l'astrophysique et ouvrent la voie au développement d'un instrument spatial.

Abstract

The Mock LISA data challenges are a program to demonstrate LISA data-analysis capabilities and to encourage their development. Each round of challenges consists of several data sets containing simulated instrument noise and gravitational waves from sources of undisclosed parameters. Participants are asked to analyze the data sets and report the maximum information about the source parameters. The challenges are being released in rounds of increasing complexity and realism: here we present the results of Challenge 2, issued in Jan 2007, which successfully demonstrated the recovery of signals from nonspinning supermassive-black-hole binaries with optimal SNRs between \10 and 2000, from \20\ 000 overlapping galactic white-dwarf binaries (among a realistically distributed population of 26 million), and from the extreme-mass-ratio inspirals of compact objects into central galactic black holes with optimal SNRs \100.

Beyond the present technologies, Laue diffraction lenses are very promising tools in the field of gamma-ray astrophysics. The theoretical concepts of this kind of instruments are based on the Laue diffraction in crystals, discovered almost 100 years ago. Though they are commonly used in crystallography, their application to λ -ray focusing in astrophysics requires some specific developments, e.g. in terms of energy and imaging responses. The present article describes the physics of X-ray diffraction in crystals. In the context of the Darwin model of mosaic crystals, some peculiar aspects, relevant to the astrophysical observation, are discussed. The evaluation and optimization of diffraction efficiency are discussed, especially with regards to the crystal's mosaicity and thickness, its spatial extent and deviations to the "ideally imperfect" Darwin model. Abstract

Gamma-rays from radioactive 26Al (half-life ∼7.2 × 105 years) provide a ‘snapshot’ view of continuing nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy. The Galaxy is relatively transparent to such γ-rays, and emission has been found concentrated along its plane. This led to the conclusion that massive stars throughout the Galaxy dominate the production of 26Al. On the other hand, meteoritic data show evidence for locally produced 26Al, perhaps from spallation reactions in the protosolar disk. Furthermore, prominent γ-ray emission from the Cygnus region suggests that a substantial fraction of Galactic 26Al could originate in localized star-forming regions. Here we report high spectral resolution measurements of 26Al emission at 1808.65 keV, which demonstrate that the 26Al source regions corotate with the Galaxy, supporting its Galaxy-wide origin. We determine a present-day equilibrium mass of 2.8 (± 0.8) solar masses of 26Al. We use this to determine that the frequency of core collapse (that is, type Ib/c and type II) supernovae is 1.9 (± 1.1) events per century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

LISA, the first space project for detecting gravitational waves, relies on two main technical challenges: the free falling masses and an outstanding precision on phase shift measurements (a few pm on 5 Mkm in the LISA band). The technology of the free falling masses, i.e. their isolation to forces other than gravity and the capability for the spacecraft to precisely follow the test masses, will soon be tested with the technological LISA Pathfinder mission. The performance of the phase measurement will be achieved by at least two stabilization stages: a pre-stabilisation of the laser frequency at a level of 10 -13 (relative frequency stability) will be further improved by using numerical algorithms, such as Time Delay Interferometry, which have been theoretically and numerically demonstrated to reach the required performance level (10 -21 ). Nevertheless, these algorithms, though already tested with numerical model of LISA, require experimental validation, including ‘realistic’ hardware elements. Such an experiment would allow to evaluate the expected noise level and the possible interactions between subsystems. To this end, the APC is currently developing an optical benchtop experiment, called LISA On Table (LOT), which is representative of the three LISA spacecraft. A first module of the LOT experiment has been mounted and is being characterized. After completion this facility may be used by the LISA community to test hardware (photodiodes, phasemeters) or software (reconstruction algorithms) components.
