Energy communities - how others’ beliefs, actions, and motivations can motivate us. The influence of social norms and autonomous motivation on collective efficacy beliefs and intention to engage in energy communities. The study focuses on collective behaviour in relation to the energy transition in the European Union, whereby engagement in energy communities is regarded as collective environmental action. Based on existing models of (environmental) collective action (Fritsche et al., 2018; Van Zomeren et al., 2008; Wang & Lin, 2017) we investigate what motivates engagement in energy communities experimentally and correlatively. In qualitative and quantitative studies, social norms (Bergquist et al., 2019; Cialdini et al., 1990; Goldstein et al., 2008; Hamann et al., 2015; Mortensen et al., 2019; Sparkman & Walton, 2017), social identification (Dunlap & McCright, 2008; Frank et al., 2011) and collective efficacy beliefs (Carmi & Mostovoy, 2017; Doran et al., 2015; Wang, 2018; Zhao et al., 2016) have been found to be important predictors of collective environmental action. According to the self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000) autonomous motivation (e.g. intrinsic motivation) is considered as an additional important component for the implementation of behaviour and is thus also brought into the context of environmental collective action (Kaplan & Madjar, 2015). But how are these predictors related? Based on the results of Wang und Lin (2017) and assumptions of the Social-Identity Model of Pro-Environmental Action (SIMPEA) (Fritsche et al., 2018), we assume that social norms can increase collective efficacy beliefs which in turn affect behavior. According to norm focus theory, descriptive norms work through an informal influence, while injunctive norms work through a process of sanctioning, and thus they can also lead to reactance (Stok et al., 2014). But initial studies by Milovanovic (2020) show that injunctive norms in the environmental context exert their influence on behavior through intrinsic motivation (and not controlled motivation as present in social sanctioning). In sum, we assume that autonomous (vs. controlled) motivation is an important moderator in injunctive normative influence. As this study is part of a larger research project on the topic of energy citizenship (ec2project.eu/), a newly developed energy citizenship scale will also be investigated as outcome.

Experimental study in the context of the energy transition with the aim of manipulating reference group and autonomous motivation and investigate their effects on efficacy beliefs and collective action.

Grassland is an important type of land use in Europe, covering a large area and providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, enhancing biodiversity and protecting water. To boost the development of a bio-based economy and contribute to the EU’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050, there is a need for business models that can be replicated in a variety of locations and contexts, with relatively low levels of investment, risk and technical sophistication. A wider range of rural entrepreneurs need to get involved in the emerging bio-based business sector, including farmers and forest owners (and their associations), policy makers, small rural businesses, and advisors. This is key to diversifying and revitalising the rural economies and creating quality jobs in rural areas.
