This multi-site, randomized, double-blind, confirmatory phase 3 study evaluated the efficacy and safety of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine-assisted therapy (MDMA-AT) versus placebo with identical therapy in participants with moderate to severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Changes in Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) total severity score (primary endpoint) and Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) functional impairment score (key secondary endpoint) were assessed by blinded independent assessors. Participants were randomized to MDMA-AT (n = 53) or placebo with therapy (n = 51). Overall, 26.9% (28/104) of participants had moderate PTSD, and 73.1% (76/104) of participants had severe PTSD. Participants were ethnoracially diverse: 28 of 104 (26.9%) identified as Hispanic/Latino, and 35 of 104 (33.7%) identified as other than White. BackgroundMany stroke recovery interventions are most beneficial when started 2-14d post-stroke, a time when patients become eligible for inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF) and neuroplasticity is often at its peak. Background and objectivesInvestigations of rapid neurologic improvement (RNI) in patients with acute cerebral ischemia (ACI) have focused on RNI occurring after hospital arrival. However, with stroke routing decisions and interventions increasingly migrating to the prehospital setting, there is a need to delineate the frequency, magnitude, predictors, and clinical outcomes of patients with ACI with ultra-early RNI (U-RNI) in the prehospital and early postarrival period.MethodsWe analyzed prospectively collected data of the prehospital Field Administration of Stroke Therapy-Magnesium (FAST-MAG) randomized clinical trial. Any U-RNI was defined as improvement by 2 or more points on the Los Angeles Motor Scale (LAMS) score between the prehospital and early post-emergency department (ED) arrival examinations and classified as moderate (2-3 point) or dramatic (4-5 point) improvement. Outcome measures included excellent recovery (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score 0-1) and death by 90 days.ResultsAmong the 1,245 patients with ACI, the mean age was 70.9 years (SD 13.2); 45% were women; the median prehospital LAMS was 4 (interquartile range [IQR] 3-5); the median last known well to ED-LAMS time was 59 minutes (IQR 46-80 minutes), and the median prehospital LAMS to ED-LAMS time was 33 minutes (IQR 28-39 minutes). Overall, any U-RNI occurred in 31%, moderate U-RNI in 23%, and dramatic U-RNI in 8%. Any U-RNI was associated with improved outcomes, including excellent recovery (mRS score 0-1) at 90 days 65.1% (246/378) vs 35.4% (302/852), p < 0.0001; decreased mortality by 90 days 3.7% (14/378) vs 16.4% (140/852), p < 0.0001; decreased symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage 1.6% (6/384) vs 4.6% (40/861), p = 0.0112; and increased likelihood of being discharged home 56.8% (218/384) vs 30.2% (260/861), p < 0.0001.DiscussionU-RNI occurs in nearly 1 in 3 ambulance-transported patients with ACI and is associated with excellent recovery and decreased mortality at 90 days. For over two decades, faculty participants in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) Teaching Workshop (ETW) have learned the core principles of effective teaching and put these principles into practice during the workshop. Workshop staff and leaders, namely faculty serving as site coordinators, presenters, assistant mentors, and mentors have helped support participants' development while also developing their own teaching and leadership skills. Graduates of the ASCE ETW are widely represented throughout civil and environmental engineering programs and in academic leadership, accreditation, and professional societies. In this paper, we present the results of a study on the development of faculty as leaders through this program. We summarize skills and characteristics identified as necessary for effective leadership and examine whether leadership skills can be developed through a well-established and highly effective teaching development workshop, namely, the ASCE ETW. For this study, we examined responses to a survey addressing the effectiveness of the workshop and respondents' roles and activities since their participation in the ETW. In total, 494 participants, staff, and leaders responded to the survey. In analyzing the data, we specifically considered evidence of leadership. Although not designed as a leadership workshop, aspects of the ETW align closely with principles of effective leadership development in terms of the content covered, delivery and conduct of the workshop, culture of mentoring, and focus on faculty development. The following research questions are addressed in this paper: To what extent do the ETW content and conduct relate to leadership skills and attributes relevant to academia? To what extent does faculty development through the ASCE ETW correlate with engagement in academic leadership? Study results indicate a strong alignment between participating in the ASCE ETW and assuming leadership positions in academia, an even more pronounced trend among those who continue their involvement in the workshop as staff. Noting the similarities in the conduct and content of the teaching workshop and programming focused on leader development, we suggest that a well-designed and well-executed faculty development workshop can also provide leadership development, even if leadership is not the principal goal. The faculty and staff development approach used in the ETW can serve as a model for including leadership training in faculty development workshops.

Planning mathematics learning sequences as a team is becoming increasingly common in Australian primary schools and is often referred to as "team planning" or "collaborative planning." The purpose of this article is to illustrate how a multi-age Year 5 and 6 primary school teaching team, authors Scott, Rai and Kristyn, grappled with these challenges through their participation in The Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership's 15-week Leading Mathematics Planning (LMP) professional learning course, facilitated by authors Aylie and Ann. The authors describe and discuss an approach to collaborative mathematics planning that supported them to make productive and effective use of planning time. Ultimately, the planning team found that the sequences of learning they designed had positive repercussions for their teaching and engaged students more deeply in the mathematics. Based on its success, other planning teams in the school are exploring using the protocols they developed.

AbstractDecades of research have revealed relationships between the abundance of coral reef taxa and local conditions, especially at small scales. However, a rigorous test of covariation requires a robust dataset collected across wide environmental or experimental gradients. Here, we surveyed spatial variability in the densities of major coral reef functional groups at 122 sites along a 70 km expanse of the leeward, forereef habitat of Curaçao in the southern Caribbean. These data were used to test the degree to which spatial variability in community composition could be predicted based on assumed functional relationships and site-specific anthropogenic, physical, and ecological conditions. In general, models revealed less power to describe the spatial variability of fish biomass than cover of reef builders (R2 of best-fit models: 0.25 [fish] and 0.64 [reef builders]). The variability in total benthic cover of reef builders was best described by physical (wave exposure and reef relief) and ecological (turf algal height and coral recruit density) predictors. No metric of anthropogenic pressure was related to spatial variation in reef builder cover. In contrast, total fish biomass showed a consistent (albeit weak) association with anthropogenic predictors (fishing and diving pressure). As is typical of most environmental gradients, the spatial patterns of both fish biomass density and reef builder cover were spatially autocorrelated. Residuals from the best-fit model for fish biomass retained a signature of spatial autocorrelation while the best-fit model for reef builder cover removed spatial autocorrelation, thus reinforcing our finding that environmental predictors were better able to describe the spatial variability of reef builders than that of fish biomass. As we seek to understand spatial variability of coral reef communities at the scale of most management units (i.e., at kilometer- to island-scales), distinct and scale-dependent perspectives will be needed when considering different functional groups.

BackgroundIntracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is the deadliest form of stroke. In observational studies, lower serum magnesium has been linked to more hematoma expansion (HE) and intracranial hemorrhage, implying that supplemental magnesium sulfate is a potential acute treatment for patients with ICH and could reduce HE. FAST-MAG (Field Administration of Stroke Therapy - Magnesium) was a clinical trial of magnesium sulfate started prehospital in patients with acute stroke within 2 hours of last known well enrolled. CT was not required prior to enrollment, and several hundred patients with acute ICH were enrolled. In this ancillary analysis, we assessed the effect of magnesium sulfate treatment upon HE in patients with acute ICH.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed data that were prospectively collected in the FAST-MAG study. Patients received intravenous magnesium sulfate or matched placebo within 2 hours of onset. We compared HE among patients allocated to intravenous magnesium sulfate or placebo with a Mann-Whitney U. We used the same method to compare neurological deficit severity (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) and global disability (modified Rankin Scale) at 3 months.ResultsAmong 268 patients with ICH meeting study entry criteria, mean 65.4±13/4 years, 33% were female, and 211 (79%) had a history of hypertension. Initial deficit severities were median (interquartile range) of 4 (3-5) on the Los Angeles Motor Scale in the field and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score of 16 (9.5-25.5) early after hospital arrival. Follow-up brain imaging was performed a median of 17.1 (11.3-22.7) hours after first scan. The magnesium and placebo groups did not statistically differ in hematoma volume on arrival, 10.1 (5.6-28.7) versus 12.4 (5.6-28.7) mL (P=0.6), or HE, 2.0 (0.1-7.4) versus 1.5 (-0.2 to 8) mL (P=0.5). There was no difference in functional outcomes (modified Rankin Scale score of 3-6), 59% versus 50% (P=0.5).ConclusionsMagnesium sulfate did not reduce HE or improve functional outcomes at 90 days.
