Patients and methods: We included adult patients with weight-related Read codes recorded in the UK’s Clinical Practice Research Datalink EHR between 2000 and 2017. Weight status codes were compared to weight values recorded on the same day and positive predictive values (PPVs) were calculated for commonly used codes. Weight change codes were validated using three methods: the percentage (%) difference in kilograms at the time of the code and 1) the previous weight measurement, 2) the weight predicted using linear regression, and 3) the historic mean weight. Weight change codes were validated if estimates were consistent across two out of three methods. Results: A total of 8,108,481 weight codes were recorded in 1,000,002 patients’ EHR. Twice as many were recorded in females (n=5,208,593, 64%). The mean body mass index for “overweight” codes ranged from 31.9 kg/m2 to 46.9 kg/m2 and from 17.4 kg/m2 to 19.2 kg/m2 for “underweight” codes. PPVs for the most commonly used weight status codes ranged from 81.3% (80%–82.5%) to 99.3% (99.2%–99.4%). Across the estimation methods, and using only validated weight change codes, mean weight loss ranged from – 5.2% (SD 5.8%) to –7.9% (SD 7.3%) and mean weight gain from 4.2 % (SD 5.5%) to 7.9 % (SD 8.2%). The previous and predicted weight methods were most consistent. Conclusion: We have developed an internationally applicable methodology to internally validate weight-related EHR coding by using available weight measurement data. We demonstrate the UK Read codes that can be confidently used to classify weight status and weight change in the absence of weight values. We provide the first evidence from primary care that a Read code for unexpected weight loss represents a mean loss of ≥ 5 % in a 6-month period, which was broadly consistent across age groups and gender. In the California Current ecosystem, global climate change is predicted to trigger large-scale changes in ocean chemistry within this century. Ocean acidification-which occurs when increased levels of atmospheric CO2 dissolve into the ocean-is one of the biggest potential threats to marine life. In a coastal upwelling system, we compared the effects of chronic exposure to low pH (elevated pCO2) at four treatment levels (i.e., pCO2 = ambient [500], moderate [750], high [1900], and extreme [2800 μatm]) on behavior, physiology, and patterns of gene expression in white muscle tissue of juvenile rockfish (genus Sebastes), integrating responses from the transcriptome to the whole organism level. Experiments were conducted simultaneously on two closely related species that both inhabit kelp forests, yet differ in early life history traits, to compare high-CO2 tolerance among species. Our findings indicate that these congeners express different sensitivities to elevated CO2 levels. Copper rockfish (S. caurinus) exhibited changes in behavioral lateralization, reduced critical swimming speed, depressed aerobic scope, changes in metabolic enzyme activity, and increases in the expression of transcription factors and regulatory genes at high pCO2 exposure. Blue rockfish (S. mystinus), in contrast, showed no significant changes in behavior, swimming physiology, or aerobic capacity, but did exhibit significant changes in the expression of muscle structural genes as a function of pCO2, indicating acclimatization potential. The capacity of long-lived, late to mature, commercially important fish to acclimatize and adapt to changing ocean chemistry over the next 50-100 years is likely dependent on species-specific physiological tolerances.

Quantitative Biology - Biomolecules - Abstract
Protein fold classification is a classic problem in structural biology and bioinformatics. We approach this problem using persistent homology. In particular, we use alpha shape filtrations to compare a topological representation of the data with a different representation that makes use of knot-theoretic ideas. We use the statistical method of Angle-based Joint and Individual Variation Explained (AJIVE) to understand similarities and differences between these representations., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures

Health communication ,conceptual metaphor ,construal mindset - Abstract
Widespread messages use metaphoric language and imagery to prompt recipients to interpret health-related concepts in terms of dissimilar, familiar concepts (e.g., fight the war on cancer). When do these messages work? According to Conceptual Metaphor Theory, thinking metaphorically involves looking past concepts superficial differences to identify their similarities at a structural level. Thus, we hypothesized that when peoples general construal mindset is oriented to focus on informations abstract meaning, not its concrete details, they would process a metaphors target health concept in ways that correspond to the dissimilar concept. Accordingly, after priming an abstract, but not concrete, construal mindset: framing sun exposure as enemy confrontation (vs. literally) increased cancer risk perceptions and sun-safe intentions (Study 1; N=186); and framing smoking cessation as an arduous journey (vs. literally) increased appreciation of quitting difficulties and interest in cessation tools (Study 2; N=244). We discuss practical and theoretical implications for improving health communication.

Background: Maternal near-miss known as severe maternal morbidity provides valuable information on obstetric care, hence allowing corrective action to be taken on the identified problems to reduce related morbidity and mortality. This study was conducted aiming to evaluate the maternal near-miss among women in a public tertiary hospital in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Material and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted for two years (from January 2010 until December 2011). Data were retrieved from the labour room and intensive care registry using the World Health Organization (WHO) near-miss evaluation tools based on clinical and management criteria. Results: There were 18 676 deliveries and 18531 live births with 160 near-miss cases and five maternal deaths during the study period. The prevalence of maternal near-miss morbidity was 0.86%, making maternal near-miss Ratio (MNMR) of 8.6 cases per 1,000 live births. Meanwhile, the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 27/100 000 live births, the maternal near-miss mortality ratio (MNMMR) obtained was 32:1 and a relatively low mortality index of 3.03%. Hypertensive disorder (61.2%) and major obstetric haemorrhage (30.0%) were the two main causes of maternal near-miss morbidities followed by ICU admissions (20.6%). The hypertensive disorder primarily severe pre-eclampsia was found significantly associated with ICU utilisation (p=0.001). Conclusion: The quality of obstetric care received by maternal near-miss patients in urban Malaysia was optimal with a relatively low mortality index and comparable prevalence of maternal near-miss and mortality worldwide. Hypertensive disorders and obstetrics haemorrhage are the most common maternal morbidities in Malaysia. On top of that, sepsis is also an essential entity that needs to be emphasised in the future. Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007-2010. These include parts of the 2005-2007 run and the 2009-2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube's observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. We find no significant coincident events, and use the search results to derive upper limits on the rate of joint sources for a range of source emission parameters. For the optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of $10^{-2}$\,M$_\odot$c$^2$ at $\sim 150$\,Hz with $\sim 60$\,ms duration, and high-energy neutrino emission of $10^{51}$\,erg comparable to the isotropic gamma-ray energy of gamma-ray bursts, we limit the source rate below $1.6 \times 10^{-2}$\,Mpc$^{-3}$yr$^{-1}$. We also examine how combining information from gravitational waves and neutrinos will aid discovery in the advanced gravitational-wave detector era.

In this paper we report on a search for short-duration gravitational wave bursts in the frequency range 64 Hz-1792 Hz associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using data from GEO600 and one of the LIGO or Virgo detectors. We introduce the method of a linear search grid to analyse GRB events with large sky localisation uncertainties such as the localisations provided by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM). Coherent searches for gravitational waves (GWs) can be computationally intensive when the GRB sky position is not well-localised, due to the corrections required for the difference in arrival time between detectors. Using a linear search grid we are able to reduce the computational cost of the analysis by a factor of O(10) for GBM events. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our analysis pipeline can improve upon the sky localisation of GRBs detected by the GBM, if a high-frequency GW signal is observed in coincidence. We use the linear search grid method in a search for GWs associated with 129 GRBs observed satellite-based gamma-ray experiments between 2006 and 2011. The GRBs in our sample had not been previously analysed for GW counterparts. A fraction of our GRB events are analysed using data from GEO600 while the detector was using squeezed-light states to improve its sensitivity; this is the first search for GWs using data from a squeezed-light interferometric observatory. We find no evidence for GW signals, either with any individual GRB in this sample or with the population as a whole. For each GRB we place lower bounds on the distance to the progenitor, assuming a fixed GW emission energy of $10^{-2} M_{\odot}c^{2}$, with a median exclusion distance of 0.8 Mpc for emission at 500 Hz and 0.3 Mpc at 1 kHz. The reduced computational cost associated with a linear search grid will enable rapid searches for GWs associated with Fermi GBM events in the Advanced detector era., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present the results of a search for gravitational waves associated with 223 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the InterPlanetary Network (IPN) in 2005-2010 during LIGO's fifth and sixth science runs and Virgo's first, second and third science runs. The IPN satellites provide accurate times of the bursts and sky localizations that vary significantly from degree scale to hundreds of square degrees. We search for both a well-modeled binary coalescence signal, the favored progenitor model for short GRBs, and for generic, unmodeled gravitational wave bursts. Both searches use the event time and sky localization to improve the gravitational-wave search sensitivity as compared to corresponding all-time, all-sky searches. We find no evidence of a gravitational-wave signal associated with any of the IPN GRBs in the sample, nor do we find evidence for a population of weak gravitational-wave signals associated with the GRBs. For all IPN-detected GRBs, for which a sufficient duration of quality gravitational-wave data is available, we place lower bounds on the distance to the source in accordance with an optimistic assumption of gravitational-wave emission energy of $10^{-2}M_{\odot}c^2$ at 150 Hz, and find a median of 13 Mpc. For the 27 short-hard GRBs we place 90% confidence exclusion distances to two source models: a binary neutron star coalescence, with a median distance of 12Mpc, or the coalescence of a neutron star and black hole, with a median distance of 22 Mpc. Finally, we combine this search with previously published results to provide a population statement for GRB searches in first-generation LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave detectors, and a resulting examination of prospects for the advanced gravitational-wave detectors., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables; for the science summary, see http://www.ligo.org/science/Publication-IPNS56VSR123grb/index.php

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present here the results of a 515 days long run of the IGEC2 observatory, consisting of the four resonant mass detectors ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. The reported results are related to the fourfold observation time from Nov. 6 2005 until Apr. 14 2007, when Allegro ceased its operation. This period overlapped with the first long term observations performed by the LIGO interferometric detectors. The IGEC observations aim at the identification of gravitational wave candidates with high confidence, keeping the false alarm rate at the level of 1 per century, and high duty cycle, namely 57% with all four sites and 94% with at least three sites in simultaneous observation. The network data analysis is based on time coincidence searches over at least three detectors: the four 3-fold searches and the 4-fold one are combined in a logical OR. We exchanged data with the usual blind procedure, by applying a unique confidential time offset to the events in each set of data. The accidental background was investigated by performing sets of 10^8 coincidence analyses per each detector configuration on off-source data, obtained by shifting the time series of each detector. The thresholds of the five searches were tuned so as to control the overall false alarm rate to 1/century. When the confidential time shifts was disclosed, no gravitational wave candidate was found in the on-source data. As an additional output of this search, we make available to other observatories the list of triple coincidence found below search thresholds, corresponding to a false alarm rate of 1/month., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures Accepted for publication on Phys. The need for efficacy and innovation in engineering often leans upon automation, especially for complex tunnel projects requiring significant problem-solving. The purpose of this paper is to present an advance to the structural analysis process for tunnels using modern digital techniques including Computational Design (CD), that rapidly creates complex analytical models. To achieve the desired outcome of an automated tunnel concrete lining's model and analysis, a digital workflow was developed to adapt all existing project data and interfaces with commonly used software including Microsoft excel, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Rhinoceros, Grasshopper along with its plugin Geometry Gym. The integrated computational process generates output files that can be recognised by analytical structural software (e.g.: ROBOT, Strand 7 and STAAD Pro etc.) for analysis. The applications like Microsoft excel, VBA and AutoCAD act as a frontend interface for the designer to define engineering inputs whilst the programming software Grasshopper that runs within the Rhinoceros 3D empowers structural model building. The algorithm built structural model then generates an importable file through Geometry gym plugin which can be read by commercially available structural software. The workflow has been assembled so the user does not require in-depth knowledge of coding or computer programming. The tool developed provides an extraordinary opportunity to save time and design costs. The workflow empowers design teams with an ability to rapidly create models, perform sensitivity analysis, bring decision making to an earlier stage, and allow early feedback to be communicated to the project team and client. It also helps to maintain consistency in the analysis approach eliminating any methodical differences within a single project. Time and cost are saved whilst at the same stretch, user errors are reduced and from project to project, a consistent design practice is maintained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We describe the search for a continuous signal of gravitational radiation from a rotating neutron star in the data taken by the ALLEGRO gravitational wave detector in early 1994. Since ALLEGRO is sensitive at frequencies near 1 kHz, only neutron stars with spin periods near 2 ms are potential sources. There are no known sources of this typ e for ALLEGRO, so we directed the search towards both the galactic center and the globular clus ter 47 Tucanae. The analysis puts a constraint of roughly $8 \times 10^{-24}$ at frequencies near 1 kHz on the gravitational strain emitted from pulsar spin-down in either 47 Tucanae or the galactic center., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. Astrophysics - Abstract
The International Gravitational Event Collaboration, IGEC, is a coordinated effort by research groups operating gravitational wave detectors working towards the detection of millisecond bursts of gravitational waves. Here we report on the current IGEC resonant bar observatory, its data analysis procedures, the main properties of the first exchanged data set. Even though the available data set is not complete, in the years 1997 and 1998 up to four detectors were operating simultaneously. Preliminary results are mentioned., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables; Proceeding of the GWDAW'99. Submitted to the International Journal of Modern Physics

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We discuss the data acquisition and analysis procedures used on the Allegro gravity wave detector, including a full description of the filtering used for bursts of gravity waves. The uncertainties introduced into timing and signal strength estimates due to stationary noise are measured, giving the windows for both quantities in coincidence searches., Comment: 26 pages, 18 figures

- Abstract
"A Great and Rising Nation: Naval exploration and global empire in the early US Republic" by M.A. Verney explores US naval expeditions during the first half of the nineteenth century. The author argues that the United States emerged as a global power during this time, contrary to traditional historical beliefs. The expeditions aimed to match European powers and gain recognition, with the underlying goal being US imperialism and the promotion of capitalism. The book provides extensive information about the geography and people encountered during these expeditions, including the United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-42 and the Holy Land expedition of 1848. While some may struggle with the author's revisionist thesis, the book offers valuable insights into the transformation of the United States into a global power. [Extracted from the article]

The spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is critical for virus infection through the engagement of the human ACE2 protein1 and is a major antibody target. Here we show that chronic infection with SARS-CoV-2 leads to viral evolution and reduced sensitivity to neutralizing antibodies in an immunosuppressed individual treated with convalescent plasma, by generating whole-genome ultra-deep sequences for 23 time points that span 101 days and using in vitro techniques to characterize the mutations revealed by sequencing. There was little change in the overall structure of the viral population after two courses of remdesivir during the first 57 days. However, after convalescent plasma therapy, we observed large, dynamic shifts in the viral population, with the emergence of a dominant viral strain that contained a substitution (D796H) in the S2 subunit and a deletion (ΔH69/ΔV70) in the S1 N-terminal domain of the spike protein. As passively transferred serum antibodies diminished, viruses with the escape genotype were reduced in frequency, before returning during a final, unsuccessful course of convalescent plasma treatment. In vitro, the spike double mutant bearing both ΔH69/ΔV70 and D796H conferred modestly decreased sensitivity to convalescent plasma, while maintaining infectivity levels that were similar to the wild-type virus. The spike substitution mutant D796H appeared to be the main contributor to the decreased susceptibility to neutralizing antibodies, but this mutation resulted in an infectivity defect. The spike deletion mutant ΔH69/ΔV70 had a twofold higher level of infectivity than wild-type SARS-CoV-2, possibly compensating for the reduced infectivity of the D796H mutation. These data reveal strong selection on SARS-CoV-2 during convalescent plasma therapy, which is associated with the emergence of viral variants that show evidence of reduced susceptibility to neutralizing antibodies in immunosuppressed individuals.
