4. Comparison of solid state crystallization of boron polymorphs at ambient and high pressures

Abstract

Here we report the systematic study of solid-state phase transformations between boron polymorphs: {\alpha}-B12, {\beta}-B106, {\gamma}-B28, T-B52 and amorphous boron (am-B). It is evident that the Ostwald rule of stages plays an important role during phase transformations not only of amorphous boron, but also of crystalline forms. We have observed the crystallization of tetragonal boron T-B52 from amorphous phase of high purity (99.99%), which, however, cannot be easily distinguished from B50C2 boron compound. Many factors influence the transformations of amorphous phase, and it is possible to observe not only well known am-B \rightarrow {\alpha}-B12 and am-B \rightarrow {\beta}-B106 transformations, but also am-B \rightarrow T-B52, never reported so far. At ~14 GPa the crystallization order becomes {\beta}-B106 \rightarrow {\alpha}-B12 \rightarrow {\gamma}-B28, while at ~11 GPa the intermediate crystallization of T-B52 still was observed. This unambiguously indicates that {\alpha}-B12 is more thermodynamically stable than {\beta}-B106 at high pressures, and renders possible to transform, at least partially, common {\beta}-phase of high purity into {\alpha}-B12 at very high pressures and moderate temperatures (below 1600 K), i.e. outside the domain of its stability.

Abstract

International audience; Oldhamite (CaS) is a key mineral in rare earth element (REE) budget of enstatite chondrite (EC). REE are important for tracing and dating cosmochemical processes, and a precise knowledge of their behavior in the EC formation conditions is essential.We present REEsulphide/silicatepartitioning values (D), obtained at 1300 and 1400°C from experiments performed in evacuated silica tubes for different oxygen fugacityconditions (from IW-6.9 to IW-4.1).Analyses were done on sulphidesand silicates byelectron microprobe for major elements and with Laser Ablation ICPMS for trace elements. ObtainedDvalues are between 0.5 and 5 for oldhamites and between 0.001 and 1 for FeS. These results are in agreement with literature data [1,2]but provide a more complete dataset. We note positive anomalies for Eu and Yb partition coefficientsin both sulphides. Here positive anomalies appear to be caused byEu and Ybreduction to Eu2+and Yb2+.This is confirmed byX-ray Absorption Near Edge Spectroscopy (XANES) analysison Yb. XANES on Sm also shows evidence of some Sm2+in the system.An extensive study of thepartitioningdatahighlights therelation between the intensity of the anomaly and the oxygen fugacity of the experiment.The obtained partition coefficients cannot explain the observed high (100 to 1000 x CI) REE abundances in natural CaSfrom reduced meteorites[3,4]. Hence,the natural REE patterns cannot be explained by CaS crystallization on the liquidus. In primitive EH, positive Eu and Yb anomalies may reflect thepresence of Eu2+and Yb2+in CaS.

Abstract

International audience; Enstatite chondrites(EC)have been proposed to be genetically related to the main building blocks of the Earth[1,2]. ECare divided into two groups, EH and EL,according to theirmetallic Fe content. Thesetwo groups also differ in terms of petrological types, with EH being mostly primitive and unequilibrated (a few EH5), and EL being mostly highly metamorphosed witha veryfew EL3 meteorites. The origin of EL3 chondrites is still debated, whether it is primitive or melted [3, 4]. Trace elementabundances and the Nd isotopic composition of EC suggest that EL3 are from a different parent body than equilibrated EL and EHchondrites[5].An earlier study by [6]alsoreported the heterogeneous Nd nucleosynthetic compositionsof EH3 chondriteleachates.We will report Nd and Sm isotopecompositionsof leachates obtained by step-wise dissolutionand mineral separates on unequilibrated enstatitechondritesfrom EH and EL type. Preliminary results on EL3 chondrite leachatesindicate noresolvable Nd nucleosynthetic anomalies. In contrast, EH3 chondrites display very large anomalies in the different leached components, especially residues that have an isotopecomposition enriched in s-process. The homogeneous Nd composition of the EL3 leachates is at odds with its primitive characteristics identified by some authors. Abstract

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; The 146Sm–142Nd extinct decay scheme (146Sm half-life of 103 My) is a powerful tool to trace early Earth silicate differentiation. Differences in 142Nd abundance measured between different chondrite meteorite groups and the modern Earth challenges the interpretation of the 142Nd isotopic variations found in terrestrial samples because the origin of the Earth and the nature of its building blocks is still an ongoing debate. As bulk meteorites, the enstatite chondrites (EC) have isotope signatures that are the closest to the Earth value with an average small deficit of ∼10 ppm in 142Nd relative to modern terrestrial samples. Here we review all the Nd isotope data measured on EC so far, and present the first measurements on an observed meteorite fall Almahata Sitta containing pristine fragments of an unmetamorphosed enstatite chondrite belonging to the EL3 subgroup. Once 142Nd/144Nd ratios are normalized to a common chondritic evolution, samples from the EC group (both EL and EH) have a deficit in 142Nd but the dispersion is important (µ142 Nd= -10 ± 12 (2SD) ppm). This scatter reflects their unique mineralogy associated to their formation in reduced conditions (low fO2 or high C/O). Rare-earth elements are mainly carried by the sulfide phase oldhamite (CaS) that is more easily altered than silicates by weathering since most of the EC meteorites are desert finds. The EL6 have fractionated rare-earth element patterns with depletion in the most incompatible elements. Deviations in Nd mass independent stable isotope ratios in enstatite chondrites relative to terrestrial standard are not resolved with the level of analytical precision achieved by modern mass spectrometry techniques. Here we show that enstatite chondrites from the EL3 and EL6 subgroups may come from different parent bodies. Samples from the EL3 subgroup have Nd (µ142Nd= -0.8 ± 7.0, 2SD) and Ru isotope ratios undistinguishable from that of the Bulk Silicate Earth. EL3 samples have never been analyzed for Mo isotopes. Because these enstatite chondrites are relatively small in size and number, they are usually not available for destructive isotopic measurements. Average values based on the measurement of EL6 samples should not be considered as representative of the whole EL group because of melting and thermal metamorphism events affecting the Sm/Nd ratios and prolonged open-system history. The EL3 chondrites are the best candidates as the Earth's building blocks. These new results remove the need to change the composition of refractory incompatible elements early in Earth's history.

26. Ultrafast mantle impregnation by carbonatite melts

Abstract

Carbonatitic melts are often invoked as responsible for metasomatism in the mantle because of their unique chemical and physical properties. Here we report on infiltration experiments demonstrating that such melts can percolate very quickly in polycrystalline olivine. Carbonatites can travel over several millimeters in one hour and the infiltration rate is kinetically controlled by cation diffusion in the melt. The observed rates are several orders of magnitude higher than those previously found for basalt infiltration in mantle lithologies. Infiltration proceeds by a dissolution-precipitation mechanism wherein porosity is created in the dunite by dissolution of olivine at grain edges. This reaction is accompanied by forsterite reprecipitation in the carbonatite reservoir. Such a mechanism would likely favor chemical exchange between melt and matrix during percolation. We propose a migration model combining infiltration and compaction by which carbonatite melts can travel upward in the mantle over hundreds to thousands of meters on time scales of 0.1-1 m.y.

Abstract

A dense amorphous form of silica is prepared at high pressure from the highly compressible, siliceous zeolite, silicalite-1-F. This is an example of new topologically ordered, amorphous material with a different intermediate-range structure, a lower entropy with respect to a standard glass and distinct physical and mechanical properties, which has eventually approached an 'ordered' or 'perfect' glass.

Abstract

International audience; Branded for its potential electronic ferroelectricity, charge-ordered LuFe2O4 has a layered Fe triangular framework, whose topology is a source of degeneracy, both at the charge and spin levels. Here we present an in-depth characterization of LuFe2O4-hp, the high-pressure (hp) polymorph of LuFe2O4, using electron, x-ray, and neutron diffraction, combined with transport and magnetization measurements. We show that LuFe2O4-hp is characterized by a misfit-related monoclinic structure, accommodating a buckled triangular [Lu](infinity) layer and two shifted adjacent rectangular [Fe](infinity) planes belonging to a distorted rock salt-type layer. The release of the geometric frustration of the Fe magnetic lattice in the hp form leads to collinear antiferromagnetic ordering at T-N = 380 K. Possible coexistence of charge and magnetic orders in this material opens research pathways for the design of tunable multifunctional devices using high-pressure techniques.

International audience; Oceanic carbonatites have been reported only at the Cape Verde and Canary archipelagos, North Atlantic Ocean. Geochemical studies based on stable, radiogenic and noble gas isotopes have led to the general consensus that their parental magmas originate in the mantle. Two contrasted models, however, have been proposed for the origin of the carbon of their source: recycled marine carbonates via subduction [Hoernle et al.. (2002) Cont. Mineral. Petrol. 142, 520-542; Doucelance et al.. (2010) GCA 74, 7261-7282] vs. primordial carbon [Mata et al.. (2010) EPSL 291, 70-83].Marine carbonates [Plank & Langmuir (1998) Chem. Geol. 145, 325-394] show REE patterns distinct from those assumed or measured for mantle and mantle-derived reservoirs (D’’: [Tolstikhin et al.. (2006) Chem. Geol. 226, 79-99]; Lower Mantle: [Doucelance et al.. (2003) GCA 67, 3717- 3733]; DMM: [Workman & Hart (2005) EPSL 231, 53-72]; MORB: [Hofmann (1988) EPSL 90, 297-314]). Notably chondrite-normalized La/Ce and Sm/Nd ratios have inverse values. Abstract

International audience; The electronic ferroelectric lutetium ferrite (LuFe2O4) was studied by x-ray diffraction as a function of pressure. Pressure is shown to induce an irreversible rhombohedral to orthorhombic transition leading to a supercell determined by the combination of electron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction. This new configuration is proposed to be charge ordered in agreement with the results of resistivity measurements.

Abstract

We demonstrate that Ge2Sb2Te5, the material of choice in phase-change optical recording (such as DVD-RAM), can be rendered amorphous by the application of hydrostatic pressure. It is argued that this structural change is due to a very strong second-nearest-neighbor Te-Te interaction that determines the long-range order in the metastable cubic phase of Ge2Sb2Te5 and also to the presence of vacancies. This newly discovered phenomenon suggests that pressure is an important factor for the formation of the amorphous phase which opens new insight into the mechanism of phase-change optical recording.

42. Evidence for Nb2+ and Ta3+ in silicate melts under highly reducing conditions: A XANES study.

Abstract

Niobium (Nb) K-edge and tantalum (Ta) LIII-edge XANES spectra were acquired at the part-permillion concentration level in silicate glasses quenched from chondritic melts equilibrated at 5 GPa and under moderately to highly reducing conditions (IW-1, IW-4.5, IW-7.9). Standard materials have also been analyzed for Nb and Ta, and the data were used to construct the calibration curves of E0 (threshold energy) vs. valence. Under moderately reducing conditions our results are consistent with niobium and tantalum being mainly pentavalent in the silicate melts as also suggested by previous studies. We do not exclude that at IW-1, a small fraction of Nb and Ta could be reduced, leading to a mean formal valence slightly lower than five. At IW-4.5, Ta is mainly in the form Ta3+, and at IW-7.9, Ta appears to be Ta1+, whereas Nb is divalent (Nb2+). The possibility for Nb and Ta to be present in reduced forms has implications for the behavior of the two elements during the processes of differentiation on planetary bodies formed in the reduced parts of the early Solar System. Element partitioning is a function of size and valence, and our results show that high field strength elements could be reduced, which could change their chemical affinity. This may also be important for the Earth and Moon formation and early differentiation, as exemplified by the 'Nb paradox.' [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
