To identify target areas for professional development, this mixed-methods study examined general education teachers' perceptions of autism and pedagogical practices in early elementary classrooms in the United States. In focus groups, teachers (N = 18) identified terms they associated with autism and strategies they used for inclusion and relationship building. Participants systematically free-listed and ranked their responses to three prompts. Using ranked responses, saliency scores were calculated to assess the perceived importance and frequency of responses. Teachers' most salient perceptions of autism (e.g., social difficulties, focused/fixed interests) revealed an awareness of core symptoms. Salient inclusion practices included assigning special classroom responsibilities and showcasing student talents; salient relationship-building strategies included embracing students' special interests and engaging in one-on-one time. Autistic students often experience peer relationship difficulties. As peer acceptance and rejection may be malleable over time, we examined predictors of change in peer acceptance and peer rejection among early elementary-age autistic students. We followed 166 autistic children (mean age: 6.1 years [range: 4-8], 82.5% boys, grades preK-2nd) longitudinally across 2 school years. Social skills, internalizing problems, and externalizing behaviors were considered as predictors of change in teacher-rated peer acceptance and rejection, covarying IQ and autism characteristics. Autistic children experienced high rejection and low acceptance; 51.9% of children were rejected by peers in one or both school years. Results revealed distinct predictors for peer acceptance versus rejection: social skills predicted change in peer acceptance across school years, whereas externalizing problems predicted change in peer rejection. Internalizing problems did not predict change in either construct. Findings can assist school professionals in supporting social acceptance and acceptance for young autistic students. This study explored the concordance between 70 third-grade students' preintervention and postintervention acceptability ratings of a writing intervention administered over 7 weeks. In addition, the association between students' preintervention and postintervention acceptability ratings and intervention effectiveness was examined. Results indicated statistically significant differences between female and male students' perceptions of the intervention before implementation. In comparison to their male peers, female students rated the intervention more favorably, and the associations between preintervention and postintervention acceptability ratings were larger for female students. In addition, moderate to large associations were observed between female students writing productivity and their preintervention and postintervention acceptability ratings, whereas small to moderate associations were observed for male students. Implications and future research directions are discussed.

Results from research indicate writing is a critical skill linked to several academic outcomes. To promote improvements in writing quantity and quality, intervention might target increasing students' academic engagement during time designated to practice writing. The purpose of this study was to implement an evidence-based classwide behavioral intervention, the Good Behavior Game (GBG), during daily writing practice time in two classrooms. Participants (n = 45) included students in a Grade 1 and Grade 2 class enrolled in an elementary school in a large suburb in the northeast U.S. Findings based on visual analysis and multilevel modeling indicate that students, on average, wrote more words (quantity) and more correct writing sequences (quality) when the GBG was played versus when it was not. Implications include the need for replication studies to extend findings and explore how school psychologists might consider the use of behavioral interventions to promote improved engagement and academic output in the classroom.

Although several decades of research has highlighted the contribution of classroom behaviors to students' mathematics and reading performance, this relation with regard to writing performance has been examined to a lesser extent. Therefore, this study sought to examine a wide range of classroom behaviors as predictors of written expression, spelling, and handwriting performance across male and female students. Data were collected from 80 third-grade students and their teachers (n = 4). Results indicated that for female students, high levels of accuracy and consistency of academic work were related to greater written expression performance. This pattern of findings was also observed for spelling performance, regardless of gender. A relation was not observed between classroom behaviors and handwriting performance. This study provides preliminary findings that suggests the importance of considering the contribution of classroom behaviors to students' writing performance.

The psychometric properties of the Kids Intervention Profile (KIP), a rating scale designed to measure academic intervention acceptability from the perspective of students, were examined as well as the influence of background factors on students' acceptability ratings. Data were extracted from 4 randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of a performance feedback intervention on third-grade students' writing fluency (n = 228). Results indicated that the KIP contains 2 factors (General Intervention Acceptability, Skill Improvement) and has adequate internal consistency and stability across a 3-week period. There were gender differences in students' acceptability ratings, with female students rating the intervention as significantly more acceptable than males. In addition, results suggested a modest, positive relationship between students' intervention acceptability ratings and their intervention outcomes. Considerations regarding the use of the KIP, as well as limitations of the study, are discussed.

Most teachers report wanting more training and support to teach autistic students. Individual, autism-focused coaching is a promising approach for improving teacher self-efficacy and autistic student outcomes. Given the high workload demands of coaching, it must be feasible and acceptable. This study considers coaches', teachers', and autistic peoples' perspectives to identify key components integral to autism-focused coaching as well as strategies that enhance the feasibility and acceptability of each component. Interviews with seven K-2nd grade teachers, ten autistic adolescents and adults, and a focus group with six coaches were qualitatively examined using an inductive approach and incorporated grounded theory practices to develop an autism-focused coaching framework. This framework consists of four contextual elements that were identified as crucial to coaching within an autism-specific context, including the use of a neurodiversity-affirming lens and coaches' strong autism knowledge. This framework also comprises eight sequential coaching components informed by principles of adult learning theory (e.g. observation, feedback, self-reflection) that are generalizable to supporting teachers' work with autistic and neurodivergent students. These findings offer guidance to coaches and program developers regarding key components to implement when working with teachers supporting autistic students. We highlight specific recommendations within each component to maximize the feasibility and social validity of autism-specific coaching. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autistic students experience greater social difficulties and heightened internalizing behaviors (e.g., anxiety, depression, withdrawal) relative to their nonautistic peers, yet little is known about how these domains influence one another over time. This 1.5-year longitudinal study analyzed the associations between teacher-reported social skills and internalizing behaviors across three time points for 177 autistic students aged 4-7 years. Cross-lagged panel analyses indicated an association between earlier internalizing behaviors and later social skills for autistic students, whereby lower internalizing behaviors predicted greater growth in social skills from one school year to the next. These changes in social skills followed children across multiple teachers and classroom contexts. The opposite cross-lagged path was not supported as early social skills did not predict changes in internalizing behaviors over time. Internalizing behaviors showed similar associations with later social skills for autistic students regardless of cognitive ability, for those in general and special education classrooms, and for those whose teachers did and did not have autism-specific training. Findings suggest that promoting students' early emotional well-being and targeting internalizing behaviors may indirectly enable social development over time.
