Unauthorized sensing activities pose an increasing threat to individual privacy, particularly in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band where regulatory frameworks remain limited. This paper presents a novel signal process methodology to monitor and counter unauthorized sensing activities. Specifically, we model the pedestrian trajectories as a random process. Then, we leverage the Cram\'er-Rao bound (CRB) to evaluate sensing performance and model it as sampling error of such a random process. As a promising technology, physical layer security (PLS) enhances security by leveraging the physical characteristics of communication channels. However, the conventional PLS approach leads to a considerable disparity in the effort legitimate users need to secure data compared to eavesdroppers. To address this issue, we propose a physical layer deception (PLD) framework, which applies random deceptive ciphering and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to defend against eavesdropping proactively. While ensuring the same level of confidentiality as traditional PLS methods, the PLD approach additionally introduces a deception mechanism, even when the eavesdropper possesses the same knowledge about the transmitter end as the legitimate receiver. This paper introduces a wavelet Galerkin method for solving two-dimensional elliptic interface problems of the form in $-\nabla\cdot(a\nabla u)=f$ in $\Omega\backslash \Gamma$, where $\Gamma$ is a smooth interface within $\Omega$. The variable scalar coefficient $a>0$ and source term $f$ may exhibit discontinuities across $\Gamma$. By utilizing a biorthogonal wavelet basis derived from bilinear finite elements, which serves as a Riesz basis for $H^1_0(\Omega)$, we devise a strategy that achieves nearly optimal convergence rates: $O(h^2 |\log(h)|^2)$ in the $L_2(\Omega)$-norm and $O(h |\log(h)|)$ in the $H^1(\Omega)$-norm with respect to the approximation order. To handle the geometry of $\Gamma$ and the singularities of the solution $u$, which has a discontinuous gradient across $\Gamma$, additional wavelet elements are introduced along the interface. The dual part of the biorthogonal wavelet basis plays a crucial role in proving these convergence rates. We develop weighted Bessel properties for wavelets, derive various inequalities in fractional Sobolev spaces, and employ finite element arguments to establish the theoretical convergence results. To achieve higher accuracy and effectively handle high-contrast coefficients $a$, our method, much like meshfree approaches, relies on augmenting the number of wavelet elements throughout the domain and near the interface, eliminating the need for re-meshing as in finite element methods. Stationary subdivision schemes have been extensively studied and have numerous applications in CAGD and wavelet analysis. To have high-order smoothness of the scheme, it is usually inevitable to enlarge the support of the mask that is used, which is a major difficulty with stationary subdivision schemes due to complicated implementation and dramatically increased special subdivision rules at extraordinary vertices. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a multivariate quasi-stationary subdivision scheme and fully characterize its convergence and smoothness. We will also discuss the general procedure of designing interpolatory masks with short support that yields smooth quasi-stationary subdivision schemes. Specifically, using the dyadic dilation of both triangular and quadrilateral meshes, for each smoothness exponent $m=1,2$, we obtain examples of $C^m$-convergent quasi-stationary $2I_2$-subdivision schemes with bivariate symmetric masks having at most $m$-ring stencils. Our examples demonstrate the advantage of quasi-stationary subdivision schemes, which can circumvent the difficulty above with stationary subdivision schemes.

Physical layer deception (PLD) is a novel security mechanism that combines physical layer security (PLS) with deception technologies to actively defend against eavesdroppers. In this paper, we establish a novel semantic model for PLD that evaluates its performance in terms of semantic distortion. By analyzing semantic distortion at varying levels of knowledge on the receiver's part regarding the key, we derive the receiver's optimal decryption strategy, and consequently, the transmitter's optimal deception strategy. The proposed semantic model provides a more generic understanding of the PLD approach independent from coding or multiplexing schemes, and allows for efficient real-time adaptation to fading channels., Comment: Submitted to ICC 2025

This paper examines architectural challenges and opportunities arising from Nomadic Networks in the context of emerging 6G research. Nomadic networks are proposed as a solution to the limitations of stationary communication networks, providing enhanced connectivity for dynamic and mobile environments, such as large outdoor events, emergency situations and mobile industrial applications. The key requirements for nomadic networks are outlined, including functional split within the Radio Access Network and robust backhauling solutions. It also addresses the complexity of managing network components, ensuring interoperability with existing systems and maintaining stakeholder trust. A comprehensive architectural framework for Nomadic Networks in 6G is proposed. Different deployment scenarios for Nomadic Networks are investigated, including spawned, steered, and wandering Radio Access Networks as well as integrated, migrated and donated Core Networks. By introducing Nomadic-Network-as-a-Service and a related orchestration framework, the potential for flexible and scalable network management is emphasized. By addressing the architectural challenges, the paper provides a path for the successful implementation of Nomadic Networks towards more adaptable and flexible 6G networks that can meet the evolving needs of multiple sectors., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

The emergence of the open radio access network (O-RAN) architecture offers a paradigm shift in cellular network management and service orchestration, leveraging data-driven, intent-based, autonomous, and intelligent solutions. Within O-RAN, the service management and orchestration (SMO) framework plays a pivotal role in managing network functions (NFs), resource allocation, service provisioning, and others. However, the increasing complexity and scale of O-RANs demand autonomous and intelligent models for optimizing SMO operations. To achieve this goal, it is essential to integrate intelligence and automation into the operations of SMO. In this manuscript, we propose three scenarios for integrating machine learning (ML) algorithms into SMO. We then focus on exploring one of the scenarios in which the non-real-time RAN intelligence controller (Non-RT RIC) plays a major role in data collection, as well as model training, deployment, and refinement, by proposing a centralized ML architecture. Finally, we identify potential challenges associated with implementing a centralized ML solution within SMO.

Emotion recognition in social situations is a complex task that requires integrating information from both facial expressions and the situational context. While traditional approaches to automatic emotion recognition have focused on decontextualized signals, recent research emphasizes the importance of context in shaping emotion perceptions. This paper contributes to the emerging field of context-based emotion recognition by leveraging psychological theories of human emotion perception to inform the design of automated methods. We propose an approach that combines emotion recognition methods with Bayesian Cue Integration (BCI) to integrate emotion inferences from decontextualized facial expressions and contextual knowledge inferred via Large-language Models. We test this approach in the context of interpreting facial expressions during a social task, the prisoner's dilemma. Our results provide clear support for BCI across a range of automatic emotion recognition methods. Equitable urban transportation applications require high-fidelity digital representations of the built environment: not just streets and sidewalks, but bike lanes, marked and unmarked crossings, curb ramps and cuts, obstructions, traffic signals, signage, street markings, potholes, and more. Direct inspections and manual annotations are prohibitively expensive at scale. Conventional machine learning methods require substantial annotated training data for adequate performance. In this paper, we consider vision language models as a mechanism for annotating diverse urban features from satellite images, reducing the dependence on human annotation to produce large training sets. While these models have achieved impressive results in describing common objects in images captured from a human perspective, their training sets are less likely to include strong signals for esoteric features in the built environment, and their performance in these settings is therefore unclear. We demonstrate proof-of-concept combining a state-of-the-art vision language model and variants of a prompting strategy that asks the model to consider segmented elements independently of the original image. Experiments on two urban features -- stop lines and raised tables -- show that while direct zero-shot prompting correctly annotates nearly zero images, the pre-segmentation strategies can annotate images with near 40% intersection-over-union accuracy. We describe how these results inform a new research agenda in automatic annotation of the built environment to improve equity, accessibility, and safety at broad scale and in diverse environments.

The landscape of wireless communication systems is evolving rapidly, with a pivotal role envisioned for dynamic network structures and self-organizing networks in upcoming technologies like the 6G mobile communications standard. This evolution is fueled by the growing demand from diverse sectors, including industry, manufacturing, agriculture, and the public sector, each with increasingly specific requirements. The establishment of non-public networks in the current 5G standard has laid a foundation, enabling independent operation within certain frequencies and local limitations, notably for Internet of Things applications. This paper explores the progression from non-public networks to nomadic non-public networks and their significance in the context of the forthcoming 6G era. Building on existing work in dynamic network structures, non-public networks regulations, and alternative technological solutions, this paper introduces specific use cases enhanced by nomadic networks. In addition, relevant Key Performance Indicators are discussed on the basis of the presented use cases. These serve as a starting point for the definition of requirement clusters and thus for a evaluation metric of nomadic non-public networks. Colored multiset Eulerian polynomials are a common generalization of MacMahon's multiset Eulerian polynomials and the colored Eulerian polynomials, both of which are known to satisfy well-studied distributional properties including real-rootedness, log-concavity and unimodality. The symmetric colored multiset Eulerian polynomials are characterized and used to prove sufficient conditions for a colored multiset Eulerian polynomial to be self-interlacing. The latter property implies the aforementioned distributional properties as well as others, including the alternatingly increasing property and bi-$\gamma$-positivity. To derive these results, multivariate generalizations of an identity due to MacMahon are deduced. The results are applied to a pair of questions, both previously studied in several special cases, that are seen to admit more general answers when framed in the context of colored multiset Eulerian polynomials. Physical layer security (PLS) is a promising technology to secure wireless communications by exploiting the physical properties of the wireless channel. However, the passive nature of PLS creates a significant imbalance between the effort required by eavesdroppers and legitimate users to secure data. To address this imbalance, in this article, we propose a novel framework of physical layer deception (PLD), which combines PLS with deception technologies to actively counteract wiretapping attempts. Combining a two-stage encoder with randomized ciphering and non-orthogonal multiplexing, the PLD approach enables the wireless communication system to proactively counter eavesdroppers with deceptive messages. Relying solely on the superiority of the legitimate channel over the eavesdropping channel, the PLD framework can effectively protect the confidentiality of the transmitted messages, even against eavesdroppers who possess knowledge equivalent to that of the legitimate receiver. With the advent of 6G technology, the demand for efficient and intelligent systems in industrial applications has surged, driving the need for advanced solutions in target localization. Utilizing swarm robots to locate unknown targets involves navigating increasingly complex environments. Digital Twinning (DT) offers a robust solution by creating a virtual replica of the physical world, which enhances the swarm's navigation capabilities. Our framework leverages DT and integrates Swarm Intelligence to store physical map information in the cloud, enabling robots to efficiently locate unknown targets. The simulation results demonstrate that the DT framework, augmented by Swarm Intelligence, significantly improves target location efficiency in obstacle-rich environments compared to traditional methods. Recently, machine learning potentials (MLP) largely enhances the reliability of molecular dynamics, but its accuracy is limited by the underlying $\textit{ab initio}$ methods. A viable approach to overcome this limitation is to refine the potential by learning from experimental data, which now can be done efficiently using modern automatic differentiation technique. However, potential refinement is mostly performed using thermodynamic properties, leaving the most accessible and informative dynamical data (like spectroscopy) unexploited. In this work, through a comprehensive application of adjoint and gradient truncation methods, we show that both memory and gradient explosion issues can be circumvented in many situations, so the dynamical property differentiation is well-behaved. Consequently, both transport coefficients and spectroscopic data can be used to improve the density functional theory based MLP towards higher accuracy. Essentially, this work contributes to the solution of the inverse problem of spectroscopy by extracting microscopic interactions from vibrational spectroscopic data.

The rapid proliferation of generative AI has raised questions about the competitiveness of lower-parameter, locally tunable, open-weight models relative to high-parameter, API-guarded, closed-weight models in terms of performance, domain adaptation, cost, and generalization. Centering under-resourced yet risk-intolerant settings in government, research, and healthcare, we see for-profit closed-weight models as incompatible with requirements for transparency, privacy, adaptability, and standards of evidence. Yet the performance penalty in using open-weight models, especially in low-data and low-resource settings, is unclear. We assess the feasibility of using smaller, open-weight models to replace GPT-4-Turbo in zero-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuned regimes, assuming access to only a single, low-cost GPU. We assess value-sensitive issues around bias, privacy, and abstention on three additional tasks relevant to those topics. We find that with relatively low effort, very low absolute monetary cost, and relatively little data for fine-tuning, small open-weight models can achieve competitive performance in domain-adapted tasks without sacrificing generality. We then run experiments considering practical issues in bias, privacy, and hallucination risk, finding that open models offer several benefits over closed models. Federated learning (FL) offers a privacy-preserving collaborative approach for training models in wireless networks, with channel estimation emerging as a promising application. The relevance of studies in queuing theory in social systems has inspired its adoption in other mainstream technologies with its application in distributed and communication systems becoming an intense research domain. Considerable work has been done regarding the application of the impatient queuing phenomenon in distributed computing to achieve optimal resource sharing and allocation for performance improvement. Generally, there are two types of common impatient queuing behaviour that have been well studied, namely balking and reneging, respectively. In this survey, we are interested in the third type of impatience: jockeying, a phenomenon that draws origins from impatient customers switching from one queue to another. This survey chronicles classical and latest efforts that labor to model and exploit the jockeying behaviour in queuing systems, with a special focus on those related to information and communication systems, especially in the context of Multi-Access Edge Computing. Use-case-specific network slicing in decentralized multi-tenancy cloud environments is a promising approach to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of resources in next-generation communication networks. Our findings associate different slice profiles to queues in a multi-server setting, such that tenants continuously assess their preferences and make rational decisions to minimize the queuing delay. Deviated from classical approaches that statistically model the jockeying phenomena in queuing systems, our work pioneers to setup a behavioral model of jockeying impatient tenants. This will serve as a basis for decentralized management of multi-queue systems, where the decision to jockey is individually made by each tenant upon its up-to-date assessment of expected waiting time. The technological landscape is swiftly advancing towards large-scale systems, creating significant opportunities, particularly in the domain of Terahertz (THz) communications. Networks designed for massive connectivity, comprising numerous Internet of Things (IoT) devices, are at the forefront of this advancement. In this paper, we consider Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)-enabled networks that support these IoT devices with massive Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communication (mURLLC) services.The focus of such networks is information freshness, with the Age-of-Information (AoI) serving as the pivotal performance metric. In particular, we aim to minimize the maximum AoI among IoT devices by optimizing the scheduling policy. Our analytical findings establish the convexity property of the problem, which can be solved efficiently. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of AoI-oriented cluster capacity, examining the relationship between the number of supported devices and the AoI performance in the network. Numerical simulations validate the advantage of our proposed approach in enhancing AoI performance, indicating its potential to guide the design of future THz communication systems for IoT applications requiring mURLLC services.

This paper presents a trustworthy framework for achieving accurate cooperative localization in multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. The Cramer-Rao low bound (CRLB) for the three-dimensional (3D) cooperative localization network is derived, with particular attention given to practical scenarios involving non-uniform spatial distribution of anchor nodes. Challenges of mobility are then addressed with Mobility Adaptive Gradient Descent (MAGD). In the context of system security, we derive the CRLB of localization under the influence of falsified information. The methods and strategies of injecting such information and their impact on system performance are studied. To assure robust performance under falsified data, we propose a mitigation solution named Time-evolving Anomaly Detection (TAD). Furthermore, we model the system performance regarding the density and magnitude of falsified information, focusing on realistic scenarios where the adversary is resource-constrained. With the vulnerability of cooperative localization understood, we apply TAD and formulate an optimization problem from the adversary's perspective. Next, we discuss the design principles of an anomaly detector, with emphasis of the trade-off of reducing such optimum and system performance. Additionally, we also deploy a reputation propagation (RP) mechanism to fully utilize the anomaly detection and further optimize the TAD. Sparse optical flow is widely used in various computer vision tasks, however assuming brightness consistency limits its performance in High Dynamic Range (HDR) environments. In this work, a lightweight network is used to extract illumination robust convolutional features and corners with strong invariance. Modifying the typical brightness consistency of the optical flow method to the convolutional feature consistency yields the light-robust hybrid optical flow method. The proposed network runs at 190 FPS on a commercial CPU because it uses only four convolutional layers to extract feature maps and score maps simultaneously. Since the shallow network is difficult to train directly, a deep network is designed to compute the reliability map that helps it. An end-to-end unsupervised training mode is used for both networks. To validate the proposed method, we compare corner repeatability and matching performance with origin optical flow under dynamic illumination. In addition, a more accurate visual inertial system is constructed by replacing the optical flow method in VINS-Mono. In a public HDR dataset, it reduces translation errors by 93\%. We prove the global existence of the smooth solutions near equilibrium to the Cauchy problem of the incompressible non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic equations in the whole three dimensional space under some admissible condition. The result has been obtained by Xu and Zhang (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 47: 26--65, 2015) in anisotropic Besov space framework. In this paper, we provide a new proof based on the temporal weighted energy method.

An invasive species of grass known as "buffelgrass" contributes to severe wildfires and biodiversity loss in the Southwest United States. We tackle the problem of predicting buffelgrass "green-ups" (i.e. readiness for herbicidal treatment). To make our predictions, we explore temporal, visual and multi-modal models that combine satellite sensing and deep learning. We find that all of our neural-based approaches improve over conventional buffelgrass green-up models, and discuss how neural model deployment promises significant resource savings.

Underlayer networks in the context of 6G for manufacturing are crucial. They address the evolving needs of highly interconnected and autonomous systems in industry. The digitalization of manufacturing processes, driven by the Internet of Things and increased data availability, enables more efficient and demand-driven production. However, wireless connectivity, which offers flexibility and easy integration of components, comes with challenges such as signal interference or high latency. A new management system is needed to coordinate and route traffic of multiple networks in a specific coverage area. This paper proposes underlayer networks designed for manufacturing, providing low latency, reliability, and security. These networks enable wireless connectivity and integration of wireless technologies into the manufacturing environment, enhancing flexibility and efficiency. The paper also discusses network slicing, spectrum sharing, and the limitations of current wireless networks in manufacturing. It introduces a network concept for underlayer networks and evaluates its application in closed-loop communication for machine tools. The study concludes with future research prospects in this area.

This paper presents a robust and secure framework for achieving accurate and reliable mutual localization in multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. Challenges of accurate localization and security threats are addressed and corresponding solutions are brought forth and accessed in our paper with numerical simulations. The proposed solution incorporates two key components: the Mobility Adaptive Gradient Descent (MAGD) and Time-evolving Anomaly Detectio (TAD). The MAGD adapts the gradient descent algorithm to handle the configuration changes in the mutual localization system, ensuring accurate localization in dynamic scenarios. This study investigates how different virtual agent (VA) behaviors influence subjects' perceptions and group decision-making. Participants carried out experimental group discussions with a VA exhibiting varying levels of engagement and affective behavior. Engagement refers to the VA's focus on the group task, whereas affective behavior reflects the VA's emotional state. The findings revealed that VA's engagements effectively captured participants' attention even in the group setting and enhanced group synergy, thereby facilitating more in-depth discussion and producing better consensus. On the other hand, VA's affective behavior negatively affected the perceived social presence and trustworthiness. Consequently, in the context of group discussion, participants preferred the engaged and non-affective VA to the non-engaged and affective VA. The study provides valuable insights for improving the VA's behavioral design as a team member for collaborative tasks.

Next-generation cellular technologies, commonly referred to as the 6G, are envisioned to support a higher system capacity, better performance, and network sensing capabilities. The THz band is one potential enabler to this end due to the large unused frequency bands and the high spatial resolution enabled by the short signal wavelength and large bandwidth. Different from earlier surveys, this paper presents a comprehensive treatment and technology survey on THz communications and sensing in terms of advantages, applications, propagation characterization, channel modeling, measurement campaigns, antennas, transceiver devices, beamforming, networking, the integration of communications and sensing, and experimental testbeds. Starting from the motivation and use cases, we survey the development and historical perspective of THz communications and sensing with the anticipated 6G requirements. We explore the radio propagation, channel modeling, and measurement for the THz band. The transceiver requirements, architectures, technological challenges, and state-of-the-art approaches to compensate for the high propagation losses, including appropriate antenna design and beamforming solutions. We overview several related technologies that either are required by or are beneficial for THz systems and networks. The synergistic design of sensing and communications is explored in depth. Practical trials, demonstrations, and experiments are also summarized. In text classification tasks, fine tuning pretrained language models like BERT and GPT-3 yields competitive accuracy; however, both methods require pretraining on large text datasets. In contrast, general topic modeling methods possess the advantage of analyzing documents to extract meaningful patterns of words without the need of pretraining. To leverage topic modeling's unsupervised insights extraction on text classification tasks, we develop the Knowledge Distillation Semi-supervised Topic Modeling (KDSTM). KDSTM requires no pretrained embeddings, few labeled documents and is efficient to train, making it ideal under resource constrained settings. In this paper, we develop sixth-order hybrid finite difference methods (FDMs) for the elliptic interface problem $-\nabla \cdot( a\nabla u)=f$ in $\Omega\backslash \Gamma$, where $\Gamma$ is a smooth interface inside $\Omega$. The variable scalar coefficient $a>0$ and source $f$ are possibly discontinuous across $\Gamma$. The hybrid FDMs utilize a $9$-point compact stencil at any interior regular points of the grid and a $13$-point stencil at irregular points near $\Gamma$. For interior regular points away from $\Gamma$, we obtain a sixth-order $9$-point compact FDM satisfying the sign and sum conditions for ensuring the M-matrix property. We also derive sixth-order compact ($4$-point for corners and $6$-point for edges) FDMs satisfying the sign and sum conditions for the M-matrix property at any boundary point subject to (mixed) Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin boundary conditions. Thus, for the elliptic problem without interface (i.e., $\Gamma$ is empty), our compact FDM has the M-matrix property for any mesh size $h>0$ and consequently, satisfies the discrete maximum principle, which guarantees the theoretical sixth-order convergence. For irregular points near $\Gamma$, we propose fifth-order $13$-point FDMs, whose stencil coefficients can be effectively calculated by recursively solving several small linear systems. Theoretically, the proposed high order FDMs use high order (partial) derivatives of the coefficient $a$, the source term $f$, the interface curve $\Gamma$, the two jump functions along $\Gamma$, and the functions on $\partial \Omega$. Numerically, we always use function values to approximate all required high order (partial) derivatives in our hybrid FDMs without losing accuracy. Our numerical experiments confirm the sixth-order convergence in the $l_{\infty}$ norm of the proposed hybrid FDMs for the elliptic interface problem.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) documented in the electronic health record through unstructured text are increasingly being studied to understand how SDOH impacts patient health outcomes. In this work, we utilize the Social History Annotation Corpus (SHAC), a multi-institutional corpus of de-identified social history sections annotated for SDOH, including substance use, employment, and living status information. We explore the automatic extraction of SDOH information with SHAC in both standoff and inline annotation formats using GPT-4 in a one-shot prompting setting. We compare GPT-4 extraction performance with a high-performing supervised approach and perform thorough error analyses. Our prompt-based GPT-4 method achieved an overall 0.652 F1 on the SHAC test set, similar to the 7th best-performing system among all teams in the n2c2 challenge with SHAC.
