Terahertz (THz) communication is envisioned as a key technology for 6G and beyond wireless systems owing to its multi-GHz bandwidth. To maintain the same aperture area and the same link budget as the lower frequencies, ultra-massive multi-input and multi-output (UM-MIMO) with hybrid beamforming is promising. Nevertheless, the hardware imperfections particularly at THz frequencies, can degrade spectral efficiency and lead to a high symbol error rate (SER), which is often overlooked yet imperative to address in practical THz communication systems. In this paper, the hybrid beamforming is investigated for THz UM-MIMO systems accounting for comprehensive hardware imperfections, including DAC and ADC quantization errors, in-phase and quadrature imbalance (IQ imbalance), phase noise, amplitude and phase error of imperfect phase shifters and power amplifier (PA) nonlinearity. Then, a two-stage hardware imperfection compensation algorithm is proposed. A deep neural network (DNN) is developed in the first stage to represent the combined hardware imperfections, while in the second stage, the digital precoder in the transmitter (Tx) or the combiner in the receiver (Rx) is designed using NN to effectively compensate for these imperfections. Furthermore, to balance the performance and network complexity, three slimming methods including pruning, parameter sharing, and removing parts of the network are proposed and combined to slim the DNN in the first stage. Numerical results show that the Tx compensation can perform better than the Rx compensation. Additionally, using the combined slimming methods can reduce parameters by 97.2% and running time by 39.2% while maintaining nearly the same performance in both uncoded and coded systems.

Terahertz (THz) band communication, ranging from 0.1 THz to 10 THz, is envisioned as a key enabling technology for next-generation networks and future applications such as inter-satellite communications and environmental sensing. The surging number of space debris in Low Earth Orbit poses a big threat to orbital infrastructure and the development of the space economy. In particular, despite the ability to detect and track large-scale space debris, millions of space debris with a radius within the range of 0.1-10 cm and velocity exceeding 1 km/s remains hard to detect with conventional ground-based radars and optical telescopes. In this study, a dual-functional frequency modulated continuous waveform (FMCW) operating in the THz band is adopted for space debris sensing and inter-satellite communications. Specifically, the radar cross section of space debris with various sizes in the THz band is analyzed to demonstrate the feasibility of THz space debris detection. A joint space debris detection and inter-satellite communications based on the FMCW waveform is derived. Then, the parameter estimation and demodulation algorithms are illustrated. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can realize high-accuracy parameter estimation of hypervelocity space debris while achieving high reliability for inter-satellite communications.

Terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) possesses multi-gigahertz continuous bandwidth resources, making it a promising frequency band for high-speed wireless communications and environment sensing. The interaction between the THz wave and the external environment has been studied for various scenarios. However, it has recently been revealed that the friction forces in dust storms as well as the irradiation of sunlight and solar wind lead to the electrification of dust particles on Earth and the Moon. The THz wave propagation in these charged dust has not been fully investigated, which is essential for THz aerial communications in dust storms and lunar communications. In this paper, a channel model for THz wave propagation in charged dust is developed for wireless communications. Specifically, an extended Mie scattering model for charged dust is first introduced, which captures the electrodynamic feature of the interaction between THz wave and charged particles. Then, the diameter and density distributions of dust particles are modeled, based on which the propagation loss of THz wave in charged dust is modeled and elaborated. Finally, numerical results on the additional loss caused by these charged dust with different sizes in the THz band are evaluated and compared. Extensive results demonstrate that as the number of dust charges increases, the extinction cross section of smaller-sized particles significantly increases, and the overall attenuation led by charged dust increases by at most 50% at 0.3 THz.

THz ISAC aims to integrate novel functionalities, such as positioning and environmental sensing, into communication systems. Accurate channel modeling is crucial for the design and performance evaluation of future ISAC systems. In this paper, a THz measurement campaign for monostatic sensing is presented. VNA-based channel measurements are conducted in a laboratory scenario, where the transmitter and receiver are positioned together to mimic monostatic sensing. The centering frequency and measured bandwidth for these measurements are 300 GHz and 20 GHz, respectively. A DSS scheme is employed to capture spatial sensing channel profiles. Measurements are conducted across 28 transceiver locations arranged along an 'L'-shaped route. Then, an element-wise SAGE algorithm is used to estimate the MPC parameters, i.e., amplitude and delay. Specular and diffuse reflections are analyzed based on geometric principles and the estimated MPC parameters, where the effects from the radiation pattern are observed. A geometry-based MPC trajectory tracking algorithm is then proposed to classify the MPCs and de-embed the effects of the radiation pattern. Following this algorithm, a hybrid channel model is proposed based on the de-embedded MPC parameters. In this hybrid channel model for monostatic sensing, the MPCs are categorized into target-related and environment-related components. The target-related components are utilized for target detection and identification, while the environment-related ones focus on geometrical scenario reconstruction. A demonstration of geometrical environment reconstruction, along with an analysis of reflection loss for target identification, is subsequently presented. This work offers valuable insights into THz monostatic sensing channel modeling and the design of future THz ISAC systems.

Terahertz (THz) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology is envisioned to achieve high communication performance alongside advanced sensing abilities. For various applications of ISAC, accurate environment reconstruction including geometry reconstruction and material identification is critical. This paper presents a highly precise geometry reconstruction algorithm and material identification scheme for a monostatic sensing case in a typical indoor scenario. Experiments are conducted in the frequency range from 290 GHz to 310 GHz using a vector network analyzer (VNA)-based channel sounder by co-locating the transmitter and receiver. A joint delay and angle space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE)-based algorithm is implemented to estimate multipath component (MPC) parameters and the indoor geometry is reconstructed based on the extracted parameters. Furthermore, a geometry-based method is employed to model and remove the spurious path of the corner, reaching an accuracy of 1.75 cm. Additionally, a material database using THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is established, capturing reflection losses of over 200 common material samples. Applying this database to our monostatic sensing, the measured reflection losses of wall and window frame are accurately identified as cement and steel, respectively. Our results demonstrate the centimeter-level geometry reconstruction and accurate material identification for practical THz ISAC scenarios, which unleash unprecedented sensing potential compared to microwave and millimeter-wave bands.

Terahertz (THz) space communications (Tera-SpaceCom) is envisioned as a promising technology to enable various space science and communication applications. Mainly, the realm of Tera-SpaceCom consists of THz sensing for space exploration, data centers in space providing cloud services for space exploration tasks, and a low earth orbit (LEO) mega-constellation relaying these tasks to ground stations (GSs) or data centers via THz links. Moreover, to reduce the computational burden on data centers as well as resource consumption and latency in the relaying process, the LEO mega-constellation provides satellite edge computing (SEC) services to directly compute space exploration tasks without relaying these tasks to data centers. The LEO satellites that receive space exploration tasks offload (i.e., distribute) partial tasks to their neighboring LEO satellites, to further reduce their computational burden. However, efficient joint communication resource allocation and computing task offloading for the Tera-SpaceCom SEC network is an NP-hard mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem (MINLP), due to the discrete nature of space exploration tasks and sub-arrays as well as the continuous nature of transmit power. To tackle this challenge, a graph neural network (GNN)-deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint resource allocation and task offloading (GRANT) algorithm is proposed with the target of long-term resource efficiency (RE). Particularly, GNNs learn relationships among different satellites from their connectivity information. Furthermore, multi-agent and multi-task mechanisms cooperatively train task offloading and resource allocation. Compared with benchmark solutions, GRANT not only achieves the highest RE with relatively low latency, but realizes the fewest trainable parameters and the shortest running time.

With multi-GHz bandwidth, Terahertz (THz) beamforming has drawn increasing attention in the sixth generation (6G) and beyond communications. Existing beamforming designs mainly focus on a compact antenna array where typical communication occurs in the far-field. However, in dense multi-user scenarios, only relying on far-field angle domain fails to distinguish users at similar angles. Therefore, a multi-user widely-spaced array (MU-WSA) is exploited in this paper, which enlarges the near-field region to introduce the additional distance domain, leading to a new paradigm of cross-near-and-far-field (CNFF) communication. Under this paradigm, the CNFF channel model is investigated, based on which the subarray spacing $d_s$ and the number of subarrays $K$ in MU-WSA are optimized to maximize the channel capacity. Then, in sub-connected systems, an alternating optimization (AO) beamforming algorithm is proposed to deal with the special block-diagonal format of the analog precoder. For fully-connected systems, a low-complexity steering-vector reconstruction (SVR)-based algorithm is proposed by constructing specialized steering vectors of MU-WSA. Numerical evaluations show that due to distance domain resolutions, the MU-WSA can improve the SE by over $60$% at a power of $20$dBm compared to the compact array. Additionally, the proposed AO algorithm in the SC system can achieve over 80% of the sum (SE) of the FC system while reducing the number of phase shifters by $K^2$, thereby lowering power consumption. The SVR algorithm in the FC system can achieve over 95% of the upper bound of SE but takes only 10% of the running time of the singular vector decomposition (SVD)-based algorithms.

Since decades ago, multi-antenna has become a key enabling technology in the evolution of wireless communication systems. In contrast to conventional multi-antenna systems that contain antennas at fixed positions, position-flexible antenna systems have been proposed to fully utilize the spatial variation of wireless channels. In this paper, movable antenna (MA) systems are analyzed from channel measurement, modeling, position optimization to performance evaluation. First, a broadband channel measurement system with physical MAs is developed, for which the extremely high movable resolution reaches 0.02 mm. A practical two-ray model is constructed based on the channel measurement for a two-dimensional movable antenna system across 32$\times$32 planar port positions at 300 GHz. In light of the measurement results, spatial-correlated channel models for the two-dimensional MA system are proposed, which are statistically parameterized by the covariance matrix of measured channels. Finally, the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR)-maximized position selection algorithm is proposed, which achieves 99% of the optimal performance. The performance of different MA systems in terms of spectral efficiency are evaluated and compared for both planar and linear MA systems. The position-fluid antenna (PFA) architecture has become one of the appealing technologies to support ubiquitous connectivity demand in next-generation wireless systems. Specifically, allowing the antenna to adjust its physical position to one of the predefined ports within a fixed region can introduce additional spatial diversity and improve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). In addition, frequency diversity is also widely-explored through frequency interleaving in the terahertz (THz) band. However, the operating bandwidth of one antenna is usually limited to 10% of the central frequency, which imposes a waste of the ultra-broad bandwidth in the THz band. In light of this, a frequency-position-fluid antenna (FPFA) system is proposed in this paper to facilitate ultra-dense connectivity. Specifically, antennas with non-overlapping operating frequency ranges are deployed at the base station (BS) to expand the total available bandwidth and provide frequency domain diversity, while the PFA-enabled users are capable of providing the spatial domain diversity. The channel model is first derived, based on which a channel correlation-based frequency allocation strategy is proposed. Then, a minimum-projection-based port selection algorithm is developed with singular-value-decomposition (SVD) precoders. Simulation results show that the proposed FPFA architecture exhibits steady performance with an increasing number of users, and outperforms the PFA and the fixed-antenna system in ultra-dense user deployment.

Owning abundant bandwidth resources, the Terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10~THz) is envisioned as a key technology to realize ultra-high-speed communications in 6G and beyond wireless networks. To realize reliable THz communications in urban microcell (UMi) environments, propagation analysis and channel characterization are still insufficient. In this paper, channel measurement campaigns are conducted in a UMi scenario at 220~GHz, using a correlation-based time domain channel sounder. 24 positions are measured along a road on the university campus, with distances ranging from 34~m to 410~m. Based on the measurement results, the spatial consistency and interaction of THz waves to the surrounding environments are analyzed. Moreover, the additional loss due to foliage blockage is calculated and an average value of 16.7~dB is observed. Furthermore, a full portrait of channel characteristics, including path loss, shadow fading, K-factor, delay and angular spreads, as well as cluster parameters, is calculated and analyzed. Specifically, an average K-factor value of 17.5 dB is measured in the line-of-sight (LoS) case, which is nearly two times larger than the extrapolated values from the 3GPP standard, revealing weak multipath effects in the THz band. Additionally, 2.5 clusters on average are observed in the LoS case, around one fifth of what is defined in the 3GPP model, which uncovers the strong sparsity in THz UMi. Terahertz (THz) communications, ranging from 100 GHz to 10 THz, are envisioned as a promising technology for 6G and beyond wireless systems. As foundation of designing THz communications, channel modeling and characterization are crucial to scrutinize the potential of the new spectrum. However, current channel modeling and standardization heavily rely on measurements, which are both time-consuming and costly to obtain in the THz band. Here, we propose a Transfer learning enabled Transformer based Generative Adversarial Network (TT-GAN) for THz channel modeling. Specifically, as a fundamental building block, a GAN is exploited to generate channel parameters, which can substitute measurements. To greatly improve the accuracy, the first T, i.e., a transformer structure with a self-attention mechanism is incorporated in GAN. Still incurring errors compared with ground-truth measurement, the second T, i.e., a transfer learning is designed to solve the mismatch between the formulated network and measurement. Technologies like ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are of special interest to meet the key performance indicators of future wireless systems including ubiquitous connectivity and lightning-fast data rates. One of their common features, the extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) systems with hundreds or thousands of antennas, give rise to near-field (NF) propagation and bring new challenges to channel modeling and characterization. In this paper, a cross-field channel model for ELAA systems is proposed, which improves the statistical model in 3GPP TR 38.901 by refining the propagation path with its first and last bounces and differentiating the characterization of parameters like path loss, delay, and angles in near- and far-fields. A comprehensive analysis of cross-field boundaries and closed-form expressions of corresponding NF or FF parameters are provided. Furthermore, cross-field experiments carried out in a typical indoor scenario at 300 GHz verify the variation of MPC parameters across the antenna array, and demonstrate the distinction of channels between different antenna elements. Emerging from the symbiotic combination of nanotechnology and communications, the field of nanonetworking has come a long way since its inception more than fifteen years ago. Significant progress has been achieved in several key communication technologies as enablers of the paradigm, as well as in the multiple application areas that it opens. In this paper, the focus is placed on the electromagnetic nanonetworking paradigm, providing an overview of the advances made in wireless nanocommunication technology from microwave through terahertz to optical bands. The characteristics and potential of the compared technologies are then confronted with the requirements and challenges of the broad set of nanonetworking applications in the Internet of NanoThings (IoNT) and on-chip networks paradigms, including quantum computing applications for the first time. With the increasing emphasis on user privacy protection, biometric recognition based on federated learning have become the latest research hotspot. However, traditional federated learning methods cannot be directly applied to finger vein recognition, due to heterogeneity of data and open-set verification. Therefore, only a few application cases have been proposed. And these methods still have two drawbacks. (1) Uniform model results in poor performance in some clients, as the finger vein data is highly heterogeneous and non-Independently Identically Distributed (non-IID). (2) On individual client, a large amount of time is underutilized, such as the time to wait for returning model from server. To address those problems, this paper proposes a Personalized and Asynchronous Federated Learning for Finger Vein Recognition (PAFedFV) framework. PAFedFV designs personalized model aggregation method to solve the heterogeneity among non-IID data. Meanwhile, it employs an asynchronized training module for clients to utilize their waiting time. Finally, extensive experiments on six finger vein datasets are conducted. Base on these experiment results, the impact of non-IID finger vein data on performance of federated learning are analyzed, and the superiority of PAFedFV in accuracy and robustness are demonstrated.

Extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA) technologies consisting of ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) or reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), are emerging to meet the demand of wireless systems in sixth-generation and beyond communications for enhanced coverage and extreme data rates up to Terabits per second. For ELAA operating at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, the Rayleigh distance expands, and users are likely to be located in both far-field (FF) and near-field (NF) regions. On one hand, new features like NF propagation and spatial non-stationarity need to be characterized. On the other hand, the transition of properties near the FF and NF boundary is worth exploring. In this paper, a complete experimental analysis of far- and near-field channel characteristics using a THz virtual antenna array is provided based on measurement of the multi-input-single-output channel with the virtual uniform planar array (UPA) structure of at most 4096 elements. In particular, non-linear phase change is observed in the NF, and the Rayleigh criterion regarding the maximum phase error is verified. Ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) is the enabler of Terahertz (THz) communications in next-generation wireless networks. In THz UM-MIMO systems, a new paradigm of cross-field communications spanning from near-field to far-field is emerging, since the near-field range expands with higher frequencies and larger array apertures. Precise beam alignment in cross-field is critical but challenging. Specifically, unlike far-field beams that rely only on the angle domain, the incorporation of dual-domain (angle and distance) training significantly increases overhead. A natural question arises of whether far-field beam training can be deployed for cross-field beam alignment. In this paper, this question is answered, by demonstrating that the far-field training enables sufficient signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in both far- and near-field scenarios, while exciting all channel dimensions. Based on that, we propose a subarray-coordinated hierarchical (SCH) training with greatly reduced overhead. To further obtain high-precision beam designs, we propose a two-phase angle and distance beam estimator (TPBE). Extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Compared to near-field exhaustive search, the SCH possesses 0.2\% training overhead. The TPBE achieves 0.01~degrees and 0.02~m estimation root-mean-squared errors for angle and distance. Furthermore, with the estimated beam directions, a near-optimal SNR with 0.11~dB deviation is attained after beam alignment.

The Terahertz band, spanning from 0.1~THz to 10~THz, is envisioned as a key technology to realize ultra-high data rates in the 6G and beyond mobile communication systems, due to its abundant bandwidth resource. However, to realize THz communications, one substantial step is to fully understand the THz channels, which relies on extensive channel measurements. In this paper, using a correlation-based time domain channel sounder, measurement campaigns are conducted in a laboratory at 140~GHz and 220~GHz. In the data post-processing procedures, the time drift of clock signals is corrected using a linear interpolation/extrapolation method. Based on the measured results, the main objects that provide significant once-scattering clusters are found, based on which the scattering losses are calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, the channel characteristics, including path loss, shadow fading, K-factor, etc. are calculated and compared to 3GPP standard values. Supporting ultra-high data rates and flexible reconfigurability, Terahertz (THz) mesh networks are attractive for next-generation wireless backhaul systems that empower the integrated access and backhaul (IAB). In THz mesh backhaul networks, the efficient cross-layer routing and long-term resource allocation is yet an open problem due to dynamic traffic demands as well as possible link failures caused by the high directivity and high non-line-of-sight (NLoS) path loss of THz spectrum. In addition, unpredictable data traffic and the mixed integer programming property with the NP-hard nature further challenge the effective routing and long-term resource allocation design. In this paper, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based cross-layer design in THz mesh backhaul networks (DEFLECT) is proposed, by considering dynamic traffic demands and possible sudden link failures. In DEFLECT, a heuristic routing metric is first devised to facilitate resource efficiency (RE) enhancement regarding energy and sub-array usages. Furthermore, a DRL based resource allocation algorithm is developed to realize long-term RE maximization and fast recovery from broken links. Specifically in the DRL method, the exploited multi-task structure cooperatively benefits joint power and sub-array allocation. Additionally, the leveraged hierarchical architecture realizes tailored resource allocation for each base station and learned knowledge transfer for fast recovery. Simulation results show that DEFLECT routing consumes less resource, compared to the minimal hop-count metric. Moreover, unlike conventional DRL methods causing packet loss and second-level latency, DEFLECT DRL realizes the long-term RE maximization with no packet loss and millisecond-level latency, and recovers resource-efficient backhaul from broken links within 1s.

Future wireless systems are likely to adopt extremely large aperture arrays to achieve higher throughput, wider coverage, and higher spatial resolution. Conventional wireless systems predominantly operate in the far field (FF) of the radiation source. However, as the array size increases and the carrier wavelength decreases, the near field (NF) becomes nonnegligible. Since the NF and FF differ in many aspects, it is critical to identify their corresponding regions. In this article, we first provide a comprehensive overview of the existing NF-FF boundaries, then introduce a novel NF-FF demarcation method based on effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) of the channel. Since EDoF is intimately related to channel capacity, the EDoF-based border is able to characterize key channel performance more accurately than the classic Rayleigh distance and other representative benchmarks. Terahertz (THz) wireless communications have the potential to realize ultra-high-speed and secure data transfer with miniaturized devices for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. The atmospheric turbulence due to random airflow leads to spatial inhomogeneity of the communication medium, which is yet missing in most existing studies, leading to additional propagation loss and even loss of spatial coherence (LoSC) in MIMO systems. In this paper, the attenuation and loss of spatial coherence for atmospheric turbulence are modeled in THz UAV MIMO channels. Specifically, the frequency- and altitude-dependency of the refractive index structure constant (RISC), as a critical statistical parameter characterizing the intensity of turbulence, is first investigated. Then, the LoSC, fading, and attenuation caused by atmospheric turbulence are modeled, where the turbulence-induced fading is modeled by a Gamma-Gamma distribution, and the turbulence attenuation as a function of altitude and frequency is derived. Numerical results show that the turbulence leads to at most 10 dB attenuation with frequency less than 1 THz and distance less than 10 km. Providing continuous bandwidth over several tens of GHz, the Terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) supports space-air-ground integrated network (SAGIN) in 6G and beyond wireless networks. However, it is still mystery how THz waves interact with the channel medium in SAGIN. In this paper, a universal space-air-ground attenuation model is proposed for THz waves, which incorporates the attenuation effects induced by particles including condensed particles, molecules, and free electrons. The proposed model is developed from the insight into the attenuation effects, namely, the physical picture that attenuation is the result of collision between photons that are the essence of THz waves and particles in the environment. Based on the attenuation model, the propagation loss of THz waves in the atmosphere and the outer space are numerically assessed. The results indicate that the attenuation effects except free space loss are all negligible at the altitude higher than 50 km while they need to be considered in the atmosphere lower than 50 km. Furthermore, the capacities of THz SAGIN are evaluated in space-ground, space-sea, ground-sea, and sea-sea scenarios, respectively.

Terahertz (THz) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) enables simultaneous data transmission with Terabit-per-second (Tbps) rate and millimeter-level accurate sensing. To realize such a blueprint, ultra-massive antenna arrays with directional beamforming are used to compensate for severe path loss in the THz band. In this paper, the time-frequency-space transmit design is investigated for THz ISAC to generate time-varying scanning sensing beams and stable communication beams. Specifically, with the dynamic array-of-subarray (DAoSA) hybrid beamforming architecture and multi-carrier modulation, two ISAC hybrid precoding algorithms are proposed, namely, a vectorization (VEC) based algorithm that outperforms existing ISAC hybrid precoding methods and a low-complexity sensing codebook assisted (SCA) approach. Meanwhile, coupled with the transmit design, parameter estimation algorithms are proposed to realize high-accuracy sensing, including a wideband DAoSA MUSIC method for angle estimation and a sum-DFT-GSS approach for range and velocity estimation. Numerical results indicate that the proposed algorithms can realize centi-degree-level angle estimation accuracy and millimeter-level range estimation accuracy, which are one or two orders of magnitudes better than the methods in the millimeter-wave band. In addition, to overcome the cyclic prefix limitation and Doppler effects, an inter-symbol interference- and inter-carrier interference-tackled sensing algorithm is developed to refine sensing capabilities for THz ISAC.

Large reflection and diffraction losses in the Terahertz (THz) band give rise to degraded coverage abilities in non-line-of-sight (NLoS) areas. To overcome this, a non-intelligent reflecting surface (NIRS) can be used, which is essentially a rough surface made by metal materials. NIRS is not only able to enhance received power in large NLoS areas through rich reflections and scattering, but also costless and super-easy to fabricate and implement. In this article, we first thoroughly compare NIRS with the lively discussed intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and point out the unique advantages of NIRS over IRS. Furthermore, experimental results are elaborated to show the effectiveness of NIRS in improving coverage. Terahertz (THz) communications are envisioned as a promising technology for 6G and beyond wireless systems, providing ultra-broad continuous bandwidth and thus Terabit-per-second (Tbps) data rates. However, as foundation of designing THz communications, channel modeling and characterization are fundamental to scrutinize the potential of the new spectrum. Relied on time-consuming and costly physical measurements, traditional statistical channel modeling methods suffer from the problem of low accuracy with the assumed certain distributions and empirical parameters. In this paper, a transformer-based generative adversarial network modeling method (T-GAN) is proposed in the THz band, which exploits the advantage of GAN in modeling the complex distribution, and the powerful expressive capability of transformer structure. Experimental results reveal that the distribution of channels generated by the proposed T-GAN method shows good agreement with the original channels in terms of the delay spread and angular spread. Terahertz (THz) wireless communications have the potential to realize ultra-high-speed and secure data transfer with miniaturized devices for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. Existing THz channel models for aerial scenarios assume a homogeneous medium along the line-of-sight propagation path. However, the atmospheric turbulence due to random airflow leads to temporal and spatial inhomogeneity of the communication medium, motivating analysis and modelling of the THz UAV communication channel. In this paper, we statistically modelled the scintillation and attenuation effect of turbulence on THz UAV channels. Specifically, the frequency- and altitude-dependency of the refractive index structure constant, as a critical statistical parameter characterizing the intensity of turbulence, is first investigated. Then, the scintillation characteristic and attenuation of the THz communications caused by atmospheric turbulence are modelled, where the scintillation effect is modelled by a Gamma-Gamma distribution, and the turbulence attenuation as a function of altitude and frequency is derived. Numerical simulations on the refractive index structure constant, scintillation, and attenuation in the THz band are presented to quantitatively analyze the influence of turbulence for the THz UAV channels. It is discovered that THz turbulence can lead to at most 10dB attenuation with frequency less than 1THz and distance less than 10km.

Due to large reflection and diffraction losses in the THz band, it is arguable to achieve reliable links in the none-line-of-sight (NLoS) cases. Intelligent reflecting surfaces, although are expected to solve the blockage problem and enhance the system connectivity, suffer from fabrication difficulty and operation complexity. In this work, non-intelligent reflecting surfaces (NIRS), which are simply made of costless metal foils and have no signal configuration capability, are adopted to enhance the signal strength and coverage in the THz band. Channel measurements are conducted in typical indoor scenarios at 306-321 GHz and 356-371 GHz bands to validate the effectiveness of the NIRS. Results measured with NIRS in different sizes show that large NIRS performs much better than small NIRS. Furthermore, by invoking the NIRS, the additional reflection loss can be reduced by more than 10~dB and the coverage ratio is increased by up to 39$\%$ for a 10~dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold., Comment: 5 figures, 2 tables

Terahertz (THz) band owning the abundant multi-ten-GHz bandwidth is capable to support Terabit-per-second wireless communications, which is a pillar technology for 6G and beyond systems. With sub-millimeter-long antennas, ultra-massive (UM) MIMO and intelligent surface (IS) systems with thousands of array elements are exploited to effectively combat the distance limitation and blockage problems, which compose a promising THz ultra-large antenna array (ULAA) system. As a combined effect of wavelength and array aperture, the resulting coverage of THz systems ranges from near-field to far-field, leading to a new paradigm of cross-field communications. Although channel models, communications theories, and networking strategies have been studied for far-field and near-field separately, the unified design of cross-field communications that achieve high spectral efficiency and low complexity is still missing. In this article, the challenges and features of THz ULAA cross-field communications are investigated. Furthermore, cross-field solutions in three perspectives are presented, including a hybrid spherical- and planar-wave channel model, cross-field channel estimation, and widely-spaced multi-subarray hybrid beamforming, where a subarray as a basic unit in THz ULAA systems is exploited. The approximation error of channel modeling accuracy, spectral efficiency, and estimation error of these designs are numerically evaluated. Finally, as a roadmap of THz ULAA cross-field communications, multiple open problems and potential research directions are elaborated.

Moreover, it is time-consuming and expensive to acquire extensive channel measurement in the THz band. In this paper, a transfer generative adversarial network (T-GAN) based modeling method is proposed in the THz band, which exploits the advantage of GAN in modeling the complex distribution, and the benefit of transfer learning in transferring the knowledge from a source task to improve generalization about the target task with limited training data. Specifically, to start with, the proposed GAN is pre-trained using the simulated dataset, generated by the standard channel model from 3rd generation partnerships project (3GPP). Furthermore, by transferring the knowledge and fine-tuning the pre-trained GAN, the T-GAN is developed by using the THz measured dataset with a small amount. Experimental results reveal that the distribution of PDPs generated by the proposed T-GAN method shows good agreement with measurement. Moreover, T-GAN achieves good performance in channel modeling, with 9 dB improved root-mean-square error (RMSE) and higher Structure Similarity Index Measure (SSIM), compared with traditional 3GPP method.

Investigation of millimeter (mmWave) and Terahertz (THz) channels relies on channel measurements and estimation of multi-path component (MPC) parameters. As a common measurement technique in the mmWave and THz bands, direction-scan sounding (DSS) resolves angular information and increases the measurable distance. Through mechanical rotation, the DSS creates a virtual multi-antenna sounding system, which however incurs signal phase instability and large data sizes, which are not fully considered in existing estimation algorithms and thus make them ineffective. To tackle this research gap, in this paper, a DSS-oriented space-alternating generalized expectation-maximization (DSS-o-SAGE) algorithm is proposed for channel parameter estimation in mmWave and THz bands. To appropriately capture the measured data in mmWave and THz DSS, the phase instability is modeled by the scanning-direction-dependent signal phases. Furthermore, based on the signal model, the DSS-o-SAGE algorithm is developed, which not only addresses the problems brought by phase instability, but also achieves ultra-low computational complexity by exploiting the narrow antenna beam property of DSS. Simulations in synthetic channels are conducted to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm and explore the applicable region of the far-field approximation in DSS-o-SAGE. Last but not least, the proposed DSS-o-SAGE algorithm is applied in real measurements in an indoor corridor scenario at 300~GHz. With abundant bandwidth resource, the Terahertz band (0.1~THz to 10~THz) is envisioned as a key technology to realize ultra-high data rates in the 6G and beyond mobile communication systems. However, moving to the THz band, existing channel models dedicated for microwave or millimeter-wave bands are ineffective. To fill this research gap, extensive channel measurement campaigns and characterizations are necessary. In this paper, using a frequency-domain Vector Network Analyzer (VNA)-based sounder, a measurement campaign is conducted in the outdoor atrium of a building in 306-321 GHz band. The measured data are further processed to obtain the channel transfer functions (CTFs), parameters of multipath components (MPCs), as well as clustering results. Based on the MPC parameters, the channel characteristics, such as path loss, shadow fading, K-factor, etc., are calculated and analyzed. Owning abundant bandwidth resource, the Terahertz (0.1-10 THz) band is a promising spectrum to support sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communications. As the foundation of channel study in the spectrum, channel measurement is ongoing in covering representative 6G communication scenarios and promising THz frequency bands. In this paper, a wideband channel measurement in an L-shaped university campus street is conducted at 306-321 GHz and 356-371 GHz. In particular, ten line-of-sight (LoS) and eight non-line-of-sight (NLoS) points are measured at the two frequency bands, respectively. In total, 6480 channel impulse responses (CIRs) are obtained from the measurement, based on which multi-path propagation in the L-shaped roadway in the THz band is elaborated to identify major scatterers of walls, vehicles, etc. in the environment and their impact on multi-path components (MPCs). Furthermore, outdoor THz channel characteristics in the two frequency bands are analyzed, including path losses, shadow fading, cluster parameters, delay spread and angular spread. In contrast with the counterparts in the similar outdoor scenario at lower frequencies, the results verify the sparsity of MPCs at THz frequencies and indicate smaller power spreads in both temporal and spatial domains in the THz band., Comment: 6 pages, 15 figures

The Terahertz (0.1-10 THz) band has been envisioned as one of the promising spectrum bands to support ultra-broadband sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communications. In this paper, a wideband channel measurement campaign in a 500- square-meter indoor lobby at 306-321 GHz is presented. The measurement system consists of a vector network analyzer (VNA)-based channel sounder, and a directional antenna equipped at the receiver to resolve multi-path components (MPCs) in the angular domain. In particular, 21 positions and 3780 channel impulse responses (CIRs) are measured in the lobby, including the line-of-sight (LoS), non-line-of-sight (NLoS) and obstructed-line-of-sight (OLoS) cases. The multi-path characteristics are summarized as follows. First, the main scatterers in the lobby include the glass, the pillar, and the LED screen. Second, best direction and omni-directional path losses are analyzed. Compared with the close-in path loss model, the optimal path loss offset in the alpha-beta path loss model exceeds 86 dB in the LoS case, and accordingly, the exponent decreases to 1.57 and below. Third, more than 10 clusters are observed in OLoS and NLoS cases, compared to 2.17 clusters on average in the LoS case. Fourth, the average power dispersion of MPCs is smaller in both temporal and angular domains in the LoS case, compared with the NLoS and OLoS counterparts. Finally, in contrast to hallway scenarios measured in previous works at the same frequency band, the lobby which is larger in dimension and square in shape, features larger path losses and smaller delay and angular spreads., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We present a method of design of control systems for $n$ bodies in the real line $\Bbb R^1$ and on the unit circle $ S^1$, to be collision-free and controllable. The problem reduces to designing a control-affine system in $\Bbb R^n$ and in $n$-torus $T^n, $ respectively, that avoids certain obstacles. We prove the controllability of the system by showing that the vector fields that define the control-affine system, together with their brackets of first order, span the whole tangent space of the state space, and then by applying the Rashevsky-Chow theorem.

The Terahertz (0.1-10 THz) band holds enormous potential for supporting unprecedented data rates and millimeter-level accurate sensing thanks to its ultra-broad bandwidth. Terahertz integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a game-changing technology to realize connected intelligence in 6G and beyond systems. In this article, challenges from THz channel and transceiver perspectives, as well as difficulties of ISAC are elaborated. Motivated by these challenges, THz ISAC channels are studied in terms of channel types, measurement and models. Moreover, four key signal processing techniques to unleash the full potential of THz ISAC are investigated, namely, waveform design, receiver processing, narrowbeam management, and localization. Quantitative studies demonstrate the benefits and performance of the state-of-the-art signal processing methods. Finally, open problems and potential solutions are discussed.

Due to the instability and limitations of unimodal biometric systems, multimodal systems have attracted more and more attention from researchers. However, how to exploit the independent and complementary information between different modalities remains a key and challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a multimodal biometric fusion recognition algorithm based on fingerprints and finger veins (Fingerprint Finger Veins-Channel Spatial Attention Fusion Module, FPV-CSAFM). Specifically, for each pair of fingerprint and finger vein images, we first propose a simple and effective Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract features. Then, we build a multimodal feature fusion module (Channel Spatial Attention Fusion Module, CSAFM) to fully fuse the complementary information between fingerprints and finger veins. Different from existing fusion strategies, our fusion method can dynamically adjust the fusion weights according to the importance of different modalities in channel and spatial dimensions, so as to better combine the information between different modalities and improve the overall recognition performance. To evaluate the performance of our method, we conduct a series of experiments on multiple public datasets. Experimental results show that the proposed FPV-CSAFM achieves excellent recognition performance on three multimodal datasets based on fingerprints and finger veins.

We study the real-analytic continuation of local real-analytic solutions to the Cauchy problems of quasi-linear partial differential equations of first order for a scalar function. By making use of the first integrals of the characteristic vector field and the implicit function theorem we determine the maximal domain of the analytic extension of a local solution as a single-valued function. The Terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) has been envisioned as one of the promising spectrum bands for sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communications. In this paper, a dual-band angular-resolvable wideband channel measurement in an indoor L-shaped hallway is presented and THz channel characteristics at 306-321 GHz and 356-371 GHz are analyzed. It is found that conventional close-in and alpha-beta path loss models cannot take good care of large-scale fading in the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) case, for which a modified alpha-beta path loss model for the NLoS case is proposed and verified in the NLoS case for both indoor and outdoor L-shaped scenarios. To describe both large-scale and small-scale fading, a ray-tracing (RT)-statistical hybrid channel model is proposed in the THz hallway scenario. Specifically in the hybrid model, the deterministic part in hybrid channel modeling uses RT modeling of dominant multi-path components (MPCs), i.e., LoS and multi-bounce reflected paths in the near-NLoS region, while dominant MPCs at far-NLoS positions can be deduced based on the developed statistical evolving model. The evolving model describes the continuous change of arrival angle, power and delay of dominant MPCs in the NLoS region. On the other hand, non-dominant MPCs are generated statistically. The proposed hybrid approach reduces the computational cost and solves the inaccuracy or even missing of dominant MPCs through RT at far-NLoS positions.

The unprecedented increase in wireless data traffic, predicted to occur within the next decade, is motivating academia and industries to look beyond contemporary wireless standards and conceptualize the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. Among various promising solutions, terahertz (THz) communications (THzCom) is recognized as a highly promising technology for the 6G and beyond era, due to its unique potential to support terabit-per-second transmission in emerging applications. This article delves into key areas for developing end-to-end THzCom systems, focusing on physical, link, and network layers. Specifically, we discuss the areas of THz spectrum management, THz antennas and beamforming, and the integration of other 6G-enabling technologies for THzCom. For each area, we identify the challenges imposed by the unique properties of the THz band. This paper presents a novel spectrum allocation strategy for multiuser terahertz (THz) band communication systems when the to-be-allocated spectrum is composed of multiple transmission windows (TWs). This strategy explores the benefits of (i) allowing users to occupy sub-bands with unequal bandwidths and (ii) optimally avoiding using some spectra that exist at the edges of TWs where molecular absorption loss is high. To maximize the aggregated multiuser data rate, we formulate an optimization problem, with the primary focus on spectrum allocation. We then apply transformations and modifications to make the problem computationally tractable, and develop an iterative algorithm based on successive convex approximation to determine the optimal sub-band bandwidth and the unused spectra at the edges of TWs. Using numerical results, we show that a significantly higher data rate can be achieved by changing the sub-band bandwidth, as compared to equal sub-band bandwidth. We also show that a further data rate gain can be obtained by optimally determining the unused spectra at the edges of TWs, as compared to avoiding using pre-defined spectra at the edges of TWs., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication
