Search

When testing and calibrating particle detectors in a test beam, accurate tracking information independent of the detector being tested is extremely useful during the offline analysis of the data. A general-purpose Silicon Beam Tracker (SBT) was constructed with an active area of 32.0 x 32.0 mm2 to provide this capability for the beam calibration of the Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) calorimeter. The tracker consists of two modules, each comprised of two orthogonal layers of 380 {\mu}m thick silicon strip sensors. In one module each layer is a 64-channel AC-coupled single-sided silicon strip detector (SSD) with a 0.5 mm pitch. In the other, each layer is a 32-channel DC-coupled single-sided SSD with a 1.0 mm pitch. The signals from the 4 layers are read out using modified CREAM hodoscope front-end electronics with a USB 2.0 interface board to a Linux DAQ PC. The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment for the International Space Station (ISS-CREAM) was installed on the ISS to measure high-energy cosmic-ray elemental spectra for the charge range $\rm Z=1$ to 26. The ISS-CREAM instrument includes a tungsten scintillating-fiber calorimeter preceded by a carbon target for energy measurements. The carbon target induces hadronic interactions, and showers of secondary particles develop in the calorimeter. The energy deposition in the calorimeter is proportional to the particle energy. As a predecessor to ISS-CREAM, the balloon-borne CREAM instrument was successfully flown seven times over Antarctica for a cumulative exposure of 191 days. The CREAM calorimeter demonstrated its capability to measure energies of cosmic-ray particles, and the ISS-CREAM calorimeter is expected to have a similar performance. Before the launch, an engineering-unit calorimeter was shipped to CERN for calibration and performance tests. This beam test included position, energy, and angle scans of electron and pion beams together with a high-voltage scan for calibration and characterization. Additionally, an attenuation effect in the scintillating fibers was studied. Primary cosmic-ray elemental spectra have been measured with the balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment since 2004. The third CREAM payload (CREAM-III) flew for 29 days during the 2007-2008 Antarctic season. Energies of incident particles above 1 TeV are measured with a calorimeter. Individual elements are clearly separated with a charge resolution of ~0.12 e (in charge units) and ~0.14 e for protons and helium nuclei, respectively, using two layers of silicon charge detectors. The measured proton and helium energy spectra at the top of the atmosphere are harder than other existing measurements at a few tens of GeV. The relative abundance of protons to helium nuclei is 9.53+-0.03 for the range of 1 TeV/n to 63 TeV/n. The ratio is considerably smaller than other measurements at a few tens of GeV/n. The spectra become softer above ~20 TeV. However, our statistical uncertainties are large at these energies and more data are needed.

Spin information carried by magnons is attractive for computing technology and the development of magnon-based computing circuits is of great interest. However, magnon transport in insulators has been challenging, different from the clear physical picture for spin transport in conductors. Here we investigate the lateral transport properties of thermally excited magnons in yttrium iron garnet (YIG), a model magnetic insulator. Polarity reversals of detected spins in non-local geometry devices have been experimentally observed and are strongly dependent on temperature, YIG film thickness, and injector-detector separation distance. A competing two-channel transport model for thermally excited magnons is proposed, which is qualitatively consistent with the spin signal behavior. In addition to the fundamental significance for thermal magnon transport, our work furthers the development of magnonics by creating an easily accessible magnon source with controllable transport, Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Appl. Using SQUID magnetometry techniques, we have studied the change in magnetization versus applied ac electric field, i.e. the magnetoelectric (ME) susceptibility dM/dE, in the chiral-lattice ME insulator Cu2OSeO3. Measurements of the dM/dE response provide a sensitive and efficient probe of the magnetic phase diagram, and we observe clearly distinct responses for the different magnetic phases, including the skyrmion lattice phase. By combining our results with theoretical calculation, we estimate quantitatively the ME coupling strength as {\lambda} = 0.0146 meV/(V/nm) in the conical phase. Our study demonstrates the ME susceptibility to be a powerful, sensitive and efficient technique for both characterizing and discovering new multiferroic materials and phases., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra have been measured with the balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass experiment flown for 42 days in Antarctica in the 2004-2005 austral summer season. High-energy cosmic-ray data were collected at an average altitude of ~38.5 km with an average atmospheric overburden of ~3.9 g cm$^{-2}$. Individual elements are clearly separated with a charge resolution of ~0.15 e (in charge units) and ~0.2 e for protons and helium nuclei, respectively. The measured spectra at the top of the atmosphere are represented by power laws with a spectral index of -2.66 $\pm$ 0.02 for protons from 2.5 TeV to 250 TeV and -2.58 $\pm$ 0.02 for helium nuclei from 630 GeV/nucleon to 63 TeV/nucleon. They are harder than previous measurements at a few tens of GeV/nucleon. The helium flux is higher than that expected from the extrapolation of the power law fitted to the lower-energy data. The relative abundance of protons to helium nuclei is 9.1 $\pm$ 0.5 for the range from 2.5 TeV/nucleon to 63 TeV/nucleon. We present low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, which does not show any indication of an upturn down to 400 mK, the lowest measuring temperature. The lack of a Schottky-like feature at low temperatures or in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla enables us to identify enhanced low-temperature quasiparticle excitations and to study anisotropy in the linear term of the specific heat. Our results can not be explained by a single or multiple isotropic superconducting gap, but are consistent with multi-gap superconductivity with nodes on at least one Fermi surface sheet., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures

The balloon-borne Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) experiment launched five times from Antarctica has achieved a cumulative flight duration of about 156 days above 99.5% of the atmosphere. The instrument is configured with complementary and redundant particle detectors designed to extend direct measurements of cosmic-ray composition to the highest energies practical with balloon flights. All elements from protons to iron nuclei are separated with excellent charge resolution. Here we report results from the first two flights of ~70 days, which indicate hardening of the elemental spectra above ~200 GeV/nucleon and a spectral difference between the two most abundant species, protons and helium nuclei. These results challenge the view that cosmic-ray spectra are simple power laws below the so-called knee at ~1015 eV. This discrepant hardening may result from a relatively nearby source, or it could represent spectral concavity caused by interactions of cosmic rays with the accelerating shock. During its second Antarctic flight, the CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass) balloon experiment collected data for 28 days, measuring the charge and the energy of cosmic rays (CR) with a redundant system of particle identification and an imaging thin ionization calorimeter. We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment CREAM (Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass). The instrument (CREAM-II) was comprised of detectors based on different techniques (Cherenkov light, specific ionization in scintillators and silicon sensors) to provide a redundant charge identification and a thin ionization calorimeter capable of measuring the energy of cosmic rays up to several hundreds of TeV. The data analysis is described and the individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe are reported up to ~ 10^14 eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for all the primary elements and can be expressed as a power law in energy E^{-2.66+/-0.04}. The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) balloon experiment had two successful flights in 2004/05 and 2005/06. It was designed to perform energy measurements from a few GeV up to 1000 TeV, taking advantage of different detection techniques. The first instrument, CREAM-1, combined a transition radiation detector with a calorimeter to provide independent energy measurements of cosmicraynuclei. Each detector was calibrated with particle beams in a limited range of energies. The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) is a balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the composition and energy spectra of cosmic rays of charge Z = 1 to 26 up to an energy of ~ 10^15 eV. CREAM had two successful flights on long-duration balloons (LDB) launched from Mc- Murdo Station, Antarctica, in December 2004 and December 2005. CREAM-I achieves a substantial measurement redundancy by employing multiple detector systems, namely a Timing Charge Detector and a Silicon Charge Detector (SCD) for particle identification, and a Transition Radiation Detector and a sampling tungsten/scintillating-fiber ionization calorimeter (CAL) for energy measurement. The CREAM calorimeter, designed to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray nuclei from under 1 TeV to 1000 TeV, is a 20 radiation length (X0) deep sampling calorimeter. The calorimeter is comprised of 20 layers of tungsten interleaved with 20 layers of scintillating fiber ribbons, and is preceded by a pair of graphite interaction targets providing about 0.42 proton interaction lengths (\lambda int). The calorimeter was placed in one of CERN's SPS accelerator beams for calibration and testing. Beams of 150 GeV electrons were used for calibration, and a variety of electron, proton, and nuclear fragment beams were used to test the simulation model of the detector. The Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) calorimeter is designed to measure the spectra of cosmic-ray particles over the energy range from ~10^11 eV to ~10^15 eV. Its first flight as part of the CREAM-I balloon-borne payload in Antarctica during the 2004/05 season resulted in a recordbreaking 42 days of exposure. We present new measurements of the energy spectra of cosmic-ray (CR) nuclei from the second flight of the balloon-borne experiment Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM). The instrument included different particle detectors to provide redundant charge identification and measure the energy of CRs up to several hundred TeV. The measured individual energy spectra of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe are presented up to $\sim 10^{14}$ eV. The spectral shape looks nearly the same for these primary elements and it can be fitted to an $E^{-2.66 \pm 0.04}$ power law in energy. Moreover, a new measurement of the absolute intensity of nitrogen in the 100-800 GeV/$n$ energy range with smaller errors than previous observations, clearly indicates a hardening of the spectrum at high energy. The relative abundance of N/O at the top of the atmosphere is measured to be $0.080 \pm 0.025 $(stat.)$ \pm 0.025 $(sys.) at $\sim $800 GeV/$n$, in good agreement with a recent result from the first CREAM flight., Comment: 32 pages, 10 figures. We present new measurements of heavy cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies per- formed during the first flight of the balloon-borne cosmic-ray experiment CREAM (Cosmic-Ray Energetics And Mass). This instrument uses multiple charge detectors and a transition radiation detector to provide the first high accuracy measurements of the relative abundances of elements from boron to oxygen up to energies around 1 TeV/n. The data agree with previous measurements at lower energies and show a relatively steep decline (~E$^-0.6$ to E$^-0.5$) at high energies. They further show the source abundance of nitrogen relative to oxygen is ~10% in the TeV/n region., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

We calculate the effective mass of a single quantized vortex in the BCS superconductor at finite temperature. Using the effective action for a vortex, we arrive at the mass formula as the integral of the spectral function $J(\omega)/\omega^3$ over frequency. The spectral function is given in terms of the transition elements of the gradient of the Hamiltonian between Bogoliubov-deGennes eigenstates. We show that core-core, and core-extended transitions yield the vortex mass, near T=0, of order of electron mass displaced by the normal core. The extended-extended states contributions are linearly divergent with the low frequency cutoff $\omega_c$, in accordance with the Ohmic character of the spectral function at low energies. We argue that the mass and friction are closely related in this system and arise from the same mechanism - interaction with the surrounding fermionic degrees of freedom.

We demonstrate that a theory of the edge of a half-filled Landau level recently proposed by Lee and Wen predicts results for the edge occupation number similar to those of a variational trial wave function proposed previously by us. We treat Lee and Wen's edge action of a half-filled Landau level within the framework of bosonization theory, and show that the momentum occupation numbers are determined by a product of two Green's functions, one charged and one neutral. In the bulk region ($k<0$) we find a linear occupation profile, $n_k \propto A+Bk$, while in the tail region ($k>0$) it is exponentially decaying over the range $k\sim\Ln$, the momentum cutoff for neutral mode. We find a good fit with the numerical results for occupation numbers.

We have investigated the electron occupation number of the edge of a quantum Hall (QH) droplet at $\nu=1/2$ using exact diagonalization technique and composite fermion trial wavefunction. We find that the electron occupation numbers near the edge obey a scaling behavior. The scaling result indicates the existence of a well-defined edge corresponding to the radius of a compact droplet of uniform filling factor 1/2. We find that the occupation number beyond this edge point is substantial, which is qualitatively different from the case of odd-denominator QH states. We relate these features to the different ways in which composite fermions occupy Landau levels for odd and even denominator states., Comment: To appear in Phys. Rev. B

It is shown that the conventional many-body techniques to calculate the Green's functions can be applied to the wide, compressible edge of a quantum Hall bar. The only ansatz we need is the existence of stable density modes that yields a simple equation of motion of the density operators. We derive the spectral density at a finite temperature and show how the tunneling characteristics of a sharp edge can be deduced as a limiting case., Comment: Revised and Enlarged. Submitted to Phys. Breakdown of the Quantum Hall Effect at high values of injected current is explained as a consequence of an abrupt formation of a metallic ``river'' percolating from one edge of the sample to the other. Such river is formed when lakes of compressible liquid, where the long-range disorder potential is screened, get connected with each other due to the strong electric field. We work out the dynamics of the compressible edge of the quantum Hall system based on the electrostatic model of Chklovskii et al.. We introduce a generalized version of Wen's hydrodynamic quantization approach to the dynamics of sharp edge and rederive Aleiner and Glazman's earlier result of multiple density modes. Bosonic operators of density excitations are used to construct fermions at the interface of the compressible and incompressible region. We also analyze the dynamics starting with the second-quantized Hamiltonian in the lowest Landau level and work out the time development of density operators. Contrary to the hydrodynamic results, the density modes are strongly coupled. We argue that the coupling suppresses the propagation of all acoustic modes, and that the excitations with large wavevectors are subject to decay due to coupling to the dissipative acoustic modes.A possible correction to the tunneling density of states is discussed., Comment: 7 pages, Revtex, 1 figure

We have exploited a variety of techniques to study the universality and stability of the scaling properties of Harper's equation, the equation for a particle moving on a tight-binding square lattice in the presence of a gauge field, when coupling to next nearest sites is added. We find, from numerical and analytical studies, that the scaling behavior of the total width of the spectrum and the multifractal nature of the spectrum are unchanged, provided the next nearest neighbor coupling terms are below a certain threshold value. The full square symmetry of the Hamiltonian is not required for criticality, but the square diagonals should remain as reflection lines. A bicritical line is found at the boundary between the region in which the nearest neighbor terms dominate and the region in which the next nearest neighbor terms dominate. On the bicritical line a different critical exponent for the width of the spectrum and different multifractal behavior are found. In the region in which the next nearest neighbor terms dominate the behavior is still critical if the Hamiltonian is invariant under reflection in the directions parallel to the sides of the square, but a new length scale enters, and the behavior is no longer universal but shows strongly oscillatory behavior. For a flux per unit cell equal to $1/q$ the measure of the spectrum is proportional to $1/q$ in this region, but if it is a ratio of Fibonacci numbers the measure decreases with a rather higher inverse power of the denominator., Comment: 39 pages; REVTeX 3.0; 14 figures available as hard-copies or postscript files
