Search

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration pulses occurring at cosmological distances with a mysterious origin. Observations show that at least some FRBs are produced by magnetars. All magnetar-powered FRB models require some triggering mechanisms, among which the most popular is the crust cracking of a neutron star, which is called starquake. However, so far there has been no decisive evidence for this speculation. Here we report the energy functions of the three most active repeating FRBs, which show a universal break around $10^{38}$ erg. Such a break is similar to that of the frequency-magnitude relationship of earthquakes. The break and change of the power-law indices below and above it can be well understood within the framework of FRBs triggered by starquakes in the magnetar models. The seed of weak FRBs can grow both on the magnetar surface and in the deeper crust. In contrast, the triggering of strong FRBs is confined by the crustal thickness and the seed of strong FRBs can only grow on the surface. This difference in dimensionality causes a break in the scaling properties from weak to strong FRBs, occurring at a point where the penetration depth of starquakes equals the crustal thickness. Our result, together with the earthquake-like temporal properties of these FRBs, strongly supports that FRBs are triggered by starquakes, providing a new opportunity to study the physical properties of the neutron star crust., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Binary millisecond pulsars with a massive white dwarf (WD) companion are intermediate-mass binary pulsars (IMBPs). They are formed via the Case BB Roche-lobe overflow (RLO) evolution channel if they are in compact orbits with an orbital period of less than 1 day. They are fairly rare in the known pulsar population, only five such IMBPs have been discovered before, and one of them is in a globular cluster. Here we report six IMBPs in a compact orbit, PSRs J0416+5201, J0520+3722, J1919+1341, J1943+2210, J1947+2304 and J2023+2853, discovered during the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), doubling the number of such IMBPs due to the high survey sensitivity in the short survey time of 5 minutes. Follow-up timing observations show that they all have either a CO WD or an ONeMg WD companion with a mass greater than about 0.8~M$_\odot$ in a very circular orbit with an eccentricity in the order of $\lesssim10^{-5}$. PSR J0416+5201 should be an ONeMg WD companion with a remarkable minimum mass of 1.28 M$_\odot$. These massive white dwarf companions lead to a detectable Shapiro delay for PSRs J0416+5201, J0520+3722, J1943+2210, and J2023+2853, indicating that their orbits are highly inclined. From the measurement of the Shapiro delay, the pulsar mass of J1943+2210 was constrained to be 1.84$^{\,+0.11}_{-0.09}$~M$_\odot$, and that of PSR J2023+2853 to be 1.28$^{\,+0.06}_{-0.05}$~M$_\odot$., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to RAA

Finding pulsars in binaries are important for measurements of the masses of neutron stars, for tests of gravity theories, and for studies of star evolution. We are carrying out the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot survey (GPPS) by using the the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Here we present the Keplerian parameters for 112 newly discovered pulsars in the FAST GPPS survey, and obtain timing solutions for 27 pulsars. Companions of these pulsars are He white dwarfs, CO/ONe white dwarfs, neutron stars, main sequence stars and ultra light objects or even planets. Our observations uncover eclipses of 8 binary systems. The optical counterpart for the companion of PSR J1908+1036 is identified. The Post-Keplerian parameter \Dot{\omega} for the double neutron star systems PSR J0528+3529 and J1844-0128 have been determined, with which the total masses of the binary systems are determined., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, submitted to RAA

The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is the most sensitive telescope at the L-band (1.0-1.5GHz) and has been used to carry out the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey in the last 5 years. Up to now, the survey has covered one-fourth of the planned areas within $\pm10^\circ$ from the Galactic plane visible by the FAST, and discovered 751 pulsars. After the first publishing of the discovery of 201 pulsars and one rotating radio transient (RRAT) in 2021 and 76 RRATs in 2023, here we report the discovery of 473 new pulsars from the FAST GPPS survey, including 137 new millisecond pulsars and 30 new RRATs. We find that 34 millisecond pulsars discovered by the GPPS survey which can be timed with a precision better than 3 $\mu$s by using FAST 15-minute observations and can be used for the pulsar timing arrays. The GPPS survey has discovered 8 pulsars with periods greater than 10 s including one with 29.77 s. The integrated profiles of pulsars and individual pulses of RRATs are presented. During the FAST GPPS survey, we also detected previously known pulsars and updated parameters for 52 pulsars. In addition, we discovered 2 fast radio bursts plus one probable case with high dispersion measures indicating their extragalactic origin., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures and 8 tables. Magnetars are slowly rotating, highly magnetized young neutron stars that can show transient radio phenomena for radio pulses and fast radio bursts. We conducted radio observations of from two magnetars SGR J1935+2154 and 3XMM J185246.6+003317 and a high-magnetic field pulsar PSR J1846$-$0258 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We performed single pulse and periodicity searches and did not detect radio signals from them. From the piggyback data recorded by other FAST telescope beams when we observed the magnetar SGR 1935+2154, we serendipitously discovered a new radio pulsar, PSR J1935+2200. We carried out the follow-up observations and obtained the timing solution based on these new observations and the archive FAST data. PSR J1935+2200 is an isolated old pulsar, with a spin period of $0.91$s, a spin-period derivative of $9.19 \times 10^{-15}$~s~s$^{-1}$, and a characteristic age of $1.57$ Myr. It is a weak pulsar with a flux density of 9.8 $\mu$Jy at 1.25 GHz. Discovery of a new pulsar from the long FAST observations of 30 minutes implies that there may be more weak older pulsars in the Galactic disk to be discovered., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures and 3 tables. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are extra-galactic sources with unknown physical mechanisms. They emit millisecond-duration radio pulses with isotropic equivalent energy of $10^{36}\sim10^{41}$ ergs. This corresponds to a brightness temperature of FRB emission typically reaching the level of $10^{36}$ K, but can be as high as above $10^{40}$ K for sub-microsecond timescale structures, suggesting the presence of underlying coherent relativistic radiation mechanisms. polarization carries the key information to understand the physical origin of FRBs, with linear polarization usually tracing the geometric configuration of magnetic fields and circular polarization probing both intrinsic radiation mechanisms and propagation effects. Here we show that the repeating sources FRB 20201124A emits $90.9\pm 1.1\%$ circularly polarized radio pulses. Such a high degree of circular polarization was unexpected in theory and unprecedented in observation in the case of FRBs, since such a high degree of circular polarization was only common among Solar or Jovian radio activities, attributed to the sub-relativistic electrons. We note that there is no obvious correlation between the degree of circular polarization and burst fluence. Besides the high degree of circular polarization, we also detected rapid swing and orthogonal jump in the position angle of linear polarization. The detection of the high degree circular polarization in FRB 20201124A, together with its linear polarization properties that show orthogonal modes, place strong constraints on FRB physical mechanisms, calling for an interplay between magnetospheric radiation and propagation effects in shaping the observed FRB radiation., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in National Science Review

We report the first detection of polarization angle (PA) orthogonal jumps, a phenomenon previously only observed from radio pulsars, from a fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A. We find three cases of orthogonal jumps in over two thousand bursts, all resembling those observed in pulsar single pulses. We propose that the jumps are due to the superposition of two orthogonal emission modes that could only be produced in a highly magnetized plasma, and they are caused by the line of sight sweeping across a rotating magnetosphere. The shortest jump timescale is of the order of one-millisecond, which hints that the emission modes come from regions smaller than the light cylinder of most pulsars or magnetars. This discovery provides convincing evidence that FRB emission originates from the complex magnetosphere of a magnetar, suggesting an FRB emission mechanism that is analogous to radio pulsars despite a huge luminosity difference between two types of objects., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted by APJL

Faraday tomography of broadband radio polarization surveys enables us to study magnetic fields and their interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM). Such surveys include the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS), which covers the northern and southern hemispheres at $\sim$ 300-1800 MHz. In this work, we used the GMIMS High Band South (1328-1768 MHz), also named the Southern Twenty-centimeter All-sky Polarization Survey (STAPS), which observes the southern sky at a resolution of 18$\arcmin$. To extract the key parameters of the magnetized ISM from STAPS, we computed the Faraday moments of the tomographic data cubes. These moments include the total polarized intensity, the mean Faraday depth weighted by the polarized intensity, the weighted dispersion of the Faraday spectrum, and its skewness. We compared the Faraday moments to those calculated over the same frequency range in the northern sky (using the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, DRAO), in a strip of $360\degr \times 30\degr$ that overlaps with STAPS coverage. We find that the total polarized intensity is generally dominated by diffuse emission that decreases at longitudes of $l \leq 300\degr$. The Faraday moments reveal a variety of polarization structures. Low-intensity regions at high latitudes usually have a single Faraday depth component. Due to its insufficiently large frequency coverage, STAPS cannot detect Faraday thick structures. Comparing the Faraday depths from STAPS to total rotation measures from extragalactic sources suggests that STAPS frequencies are high enough that the intervening ISM causes depolarization to background emission at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes. Where they overlap, the STAPS and DRAO surveys exhibit broad correspondence but differ in polarized intensity by a factor of $\sim$1.8., Comment: Revision in progress in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Clusters of galaxies are merging during the formation of large-scale structures in the Universe. Based on optical survey data, we identify a large sample of pre-mergers of galaxy clusters and merging subclusters in rich clusters. We find 39,382 partners within a velocity difference of 1500 km/s and a projected separation of 5r_{500} around 33,126 main clusters, where r_{500} is the radius of the main cluster. Based on the galaxy distribution inside rich clusters with more than 30 member galaxy candidates, we identify subclusters by modeling the smoothed optical distribution with a two-component profile, and a coupling factor is obtained for merging subclusters in 7845 clusters. In addition, we find 3446 post-collision mergers according to the deviations of brightest cluster galaxies from other member galaxies, most of which have been partially validated by using the Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray images. Two new bullet-like clusters have been identified by using the optical and X-ray images. Rapidly spinning magnetars are potential candidates for the energy source of supernovae (SNe) and gamma-ray bursts and the most promising sources for continuous gravitational waves (GWs) detected by ground-based GW detectors. Continuous GWs can be radiated from magnetars due to magnetic-induced deformation or fluid oscillations, compatible with magnetic dipole (MD) radiation for spin-down energy. In this paper, we investigate the diverse light curves of magnetar-driven SNe in the scenario that the spin-down is dominated by GW radiation and/or MD radiation. By simulating the light curves of SNe and employing the Markov chain Monte Carlo method, we constrain the parameters of the magnetars and SN explosions and show that the signature of GW radiation may be indicated by the bolometric luminosity curves of SNe Ic-BL 2007ru and 2009bb. We find that the ellipticity of magnetars in the order of $10^{-3}$ can be induced by the magnetic field of $\sim 10^{16} \mbox{ G}$. If such continuous GWs associated with SNe can be detected in the future by the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors, this would be a smoking gun for a magnetar engine powering SNe., Comment: 13pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The magnetic fields in our Milky Way can be revealed by the distribution of Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of radio sources behind the Galaxy and of radio pulsars inside the Galaxy. Based on the antisymmetry of the Faraday sky in the inner Galaxy to the Galactic coordinates, the magnetic field toroids above and below the Galactic plane with reversed field directions exist in the Galactic halo and have been included in almost all models for the global magnetic structure in the Milky Way. However, the quantitative parameters, such as the field strength, the scale height, and the scale radius of the toroids are hard to determine from observational data. It has long been argued that the RM antisymmetry could be dominated by the local contributions of the interstellar medium. Here we discount the local RM contributions measured by pulsars mostly located within 5 kpc and get the first quantitative estimate of the size of magnetic toroids in the Galactic halo. They are huge, starting from a Galactocentric radius of less than 2 kpc to at least 15 kpc without field direction reversals. Such magnetic toroids in the Galactic halo should naturally constrain the physical processes in galaxies., Comment: 14 pages,8 figures

Based on the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys released data and available spectroscopic redshifts, we identify 1.58 million clusters of galaxies by searching for the overdensity of stellar mass distribution of galaxies within redshift slices around pre-selected massive galaxies, among which 877,806 clusters are found for the first time. The identified clusters have an equivalent mass of M_{500}> 0.47*10^{14}~Msolar with an uncertainty of 0.2 dex. The redshift distribution of clusters extends to z~1.5, and 338,841 clusters have spectroscopic redshifts. Our cluster sample includes most of the rich optical clusters in previous catalogs, more than 95% massive Sunyaev-Zeldovich clusters and 90% ROSAT and eROSITA X-ray clusters. From the light distributions of member galaxies, we derive the dynamical state parameters for 28,038 rich clusters and find no significant evolution of the dynamical state with redshift. Double neutron star (DNS) systems offer excellent opportunities to test gravity theories. We report the timing results of PSR J1901+0658, the first pulsar discovered in the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey. Based on timing observations by FAST over 5 yr, we obtain the phase-coherent timing solutions and derive the precise measurements of its position, spin parameters, orbital parameters, and dispersion measure. It has a period of 75.7 ms, a period derivative of 2.169(6)$\times 10^{-19}$ s s$^{-1}$, and a characteristic age of 5.5 Gyr. This pulsar is in an orbit with a period of 14.45 d and an eccentricity of 0.366. One post-Keplerian parameter, periastron advance, has been well-measured as being 0.00531(9) deg yr$^{-1}$, from which the total mass of this system is derived to be 2.79(7) M$_{\odot}$. The pulsar has the mass upper limit of 1.68 M$_{\odot}$, so the lower limit for the companion mass is 1.11 M$_{\odot}$. Because PSR J1901+0658 is a partially recycled pulsar in an eccentric binary orbit with such a large companion mass, it should be in a DNS system according to the evolution history of the binary system., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

How pulsars radiate is a long-standing problem. Detailed polarization measurements of individual pulses shed light on currently unknown emission processes. Recently, based on supersensitive observations, dwarf pulses have been recognized as weak narrow pulses often appearing during the nulling state. In this study, we report the detection of dwarf pulses from ten pulsars, PSRs B0525+21, B1237+25, J1538+2345, J1824$-$0127, J1851$-$0053, B1901+10, J1939+10, B1944+17, B2000+40 and J2112+4058, based on observations conducted with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. Dwarf pulses of five pulsars are clearly discernible in the two-dimensional distribution of pulse intensity and pulse width. For the other five pulsars, PSRs J1538+2345, J1824$-$0127, J1939+10, B2000+40, and J2112+4058, only a few dwarf pulses are detected from pulse stacks. The dwarf pulses can emerge in both cone and core emission components for PSR B1237+25, and the polarization angles of these dwarf pulses are mostly in the orthogonal polarization mode of normal pulses for PSR B1944+17. In general, pulsars with detected dwarf pulses tend to be located within the "death valley" region of the distribution of pulsar periods and period derivatives., Comment: 12 pages, 24 figures

Individual subpulses of pulsars are regarded as the basic emission components, providing invaluable information to understand the radio emission process in the pulsar magnetosphere. Nevertheless, subpulses are overlapped with each other along the rotation phase for most pulsars, making it difficult to study the statistical properties of subpulses. Among the pulsars observed by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope, PSR B1916+14 has a large number of isolated well-resolved subpulses in the high time resolution observations, having a typical width of 0.15 ms and a high linear polarization. We find that the number distribution of subpulses contributes dominantly to the mean profile. According to the emission geometry, these emission units come from a region roughly 155 km above the polar cap in the pulsar magnetosphere, and the length scale of basic emission units is approximately 120 m. The deviations of polarization position angles for these single subpulses from the standard S-shaped curve are closely related to their fractional linear and circular polarization, and the large deviations tend to come from drifting subpulses., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for MNRAS after a minor revision

G213.0$-$0.6 is a faint extended source situated in the anti-center region of the Galactic plane. It has been classified as a shell-type supernova remnant (SNR) based on its shell-like morphology, steep radio continuum spectrum, and high ratio of [S II]/H$\alpha$. With new optical emission line data of H$\alpha$, [S II], and [N II] recently observed by the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope, the ratios of [S II]/H$\alpha$ and [N II]/H$\alpha$ are re-assessed. The lower values than those previously reported put G213.0$-$0.6 around the borderline of SNR-HII region classification. We decompose the steep-spectrum synchrotron and the flat-spectrum thermal free-free emission in the area of G213.0$-$0.6 with multi-frequency radio continuum data. G213.0$-$0.6 is found to show a flat spectrum, in conflict with the properties of a shell-type SNR. Such a result is further confirmed by TT-plots made between the 863-MHz, 1.4-GHz, and 4.8-GHz data. Combining the evidence extracted in both optical and radio continuum, we argue that G213.0$-$0.6 is possibly not an SNR, but an HII region instead. The $V_{LSR}$ pertaining to the H$\alpha$ filaments places G213.0$-$0.6 approximately 1.9 kpc away in the Perseus Arm., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

During observations of the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), varying subpulses drifting of PSR J1857+0057 is detected. The following-up observation confirms the quasi-regularly changes of the drifting rate about every 50 periods. We determine the drift rate $D$ through a linear fit to the pulse-central longitudes of subpulses in a drifting band, and determine $P_3$ from the cross-points of two fitted lines at the zero longitude for two neighbored drifting bands. The low frequency modulation of about every 50 periods is found on variations of not only pulse intensity but also drift parameters. In most of low frequency modulation cycles, the integrated pulse intensity $I$ and the absolute drift rate $|D|$ tend to increase first and then decrease, and the drifting periodicity $P_3$ varies just in the opposite. In addition, the phase-forward intensity-enhancement is observed in many modulation cycles. Based on our polarization data, the average PA curve for pulses with a smaller $|D|$ and larger $P_3$ is slightly steep in the leading edge of pulse profile compared with that of the fully averaged profile., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

PSR J1953+1844 (i.e., M71E) is a millisecond pulsar (MSP)in a 53 minute binary orbit discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope. The mass function from pulsar timing is $2.3\times10^{-7}$ $M_\odot$. The possible redback origin of this system has been discussed by Pan et al. We discuss here an alternative evolution track for this binary system, namely that PSR J1953+1844 is a descendant of an ultra-compact X-ray binary (UCXB), which has a hydrogen-poor donor accreting onto a neutron star (NS) with an orbital period of $\leq1$ hr. We noticed that some of UCXB systems hold an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars (AMXPs) and a donor with a mass of about 0.01 M$_\odot$. M71E has a very similar orbit to those of AMXPs, indicating that it might be evolved from a UCXB similar to PSR J1653--0158. The companion star of M71E should be significantly bloated and it most probably has a carbon and oxygen composition, otherwise a low inclination angle of the orbit is required for a helium companion. The discovery of this M71E binary system may shed light on when and how an NS in a UCXBs turns into a radio pulsar., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 5 pages, 2 figures

We report five new fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered from the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST): FRB\,20210126, FRB\,20210208, FRB\,20210705, FRB\,20211005 and FRB\,20220306. To date, no repeating bursts from these FRB sources have been detected in the follow-up monitoring observations, leading to their classification as potential one-off events. We obtain the basic parameters for these bursts, including position, dispersion measure (DM), pulse width, spectral index, scattering time-scale, etc. The fluences and flux densities are generally lower in comparison to the values observed in one-off bursts discovered by other telescopes. Among the observed bursts, polarization data for 4 bursts were recorded during observations. Pulsar polarization profiles are very basic database for understanding the emission processes in pulsar magnetosphere. After careful polarization calibration of the 19-beam L-band receiver and verification of beam-offset observation results, we obtain polarization profiles of 682 pulsars from observations by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) during the survey tests for the Galactic Plan Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey and other normal FAST projects. Among them, polarization profiles of about 460 pulsars are observed for the first time. The profiles exhibit diverse features. Some pulsars have a polarization position angle curve with a good S-shaped swing, and some with orthogonal modes; some have components with highly linearly components or strong circularly polarized components; some have a very wide profile, coming from an aligned rotator, and some have an interpulse from a perpendicular rotator; some wide profiles are caused by interstellar scattering. We derive geometry parameters for 190 pulsars from the S-shaped position angle curves or with orthogonal modes. We find that the linear and circular polarization or the widths of pulse profiles have various frequency dependencies. Pulsars with large fraction of linear polarization are more likely to have a large Edot., Comment: 38 pages, 23 figures. Pulsars radiate radio signals when they rotate. However, some old pulsars often stop radiating for some periods. The underlying mechanism remains unknown, while the magnetosphere during nulling phases is hard to probe due to the absence of emission measurement. Here we report the detection and accurate polarization measurements of sporadic weak narrow dwarf pulses detected in the ordinary nulling state of pulsar B2111+46 via the Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Further analysis shows that their polarization angles follow the average polarization angle curve of normal pulses, suggesting no change of magnetic field structure in the emission region in the two emission states. Whereas radio emission of normal individual pulses is radiated by a thunderstorm of particles produced by copious discharges in regularly formed gaps, dwarf pulses are produced by one or a few raindrops of particles generated by pair production in a fragile gap of this near-death pulsar., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures. Four pulsars, PSRs J1838+1523, J1901+0510, J1909+0007 and J1929+1844, are found to exhibit bright and weak emission states from sensitive FAST observations. New FAST observations have measured their polarization properties for the two states, and revealed that the polarization profiles, linear polarization percentage, and polarization position angle curves, as well as circular polarization percentage are partially or entirely different in the two emission states. Remarkably, PSR J1838+1523 has very different slopes for the polarization position angle curves. PSR J1901+0510 has a wider profile and a higher linear polarization in the weak state than those in the bright state. PSR J1909+0007 has very distinct polarization angle curves for the two modes. While in the case of PSR J1929+1844, the central profile component evolves with frequency in the bright state, and the senses of circular polarization are opposite in the two modes. The different polarization properties of the two emission states provide valuable insights into the physical processes and emission conditions in pulsar magnetosphere., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

The pulsar B0458+46 was previously believed to have a distance of about 1.3$~$kpc and to be associated with a nearby supernova remnant, SNR HB9 (G160.9+2.6). We observe the neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption spectrum of PSR B0458+46 by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), and detect two absorption lines at radial velocities of $V_{\rm LSR} = {-7.7}~{\rm km~s}^{-1}$ and $-28.1~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. Based on the Galactic rotation curve with a modification factor correcting for the systematic stream in the anticenter region, we derive the kinematic distance of the farther absorption cloud, which is found to be located $2.7^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$ kpc away, just beyond the Perseus Arm. We also obtain a direct distance estimation of the absorption clouds, being $2.3_{-0.7}^{+1.1}$ kpc, based on a comparison of their velocity with the HI emission in the Perseus and Outer Arms that was well-defined by recently measured parallax tracers. As a result, we conclude that PSR B0458+46 should be located beyond the Perseus Arm, with a lower limit distance of 2.7 kpc, and therefore not associated with SNR HB9. The doubled distance indicates a deficiency of thermal electrons in the immediate outer Galaxy, with much less density than current models predict. Timing observations are crucial for determining the basic parameters of newly discovered pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) with the L-band 19-beam receiver covering the frequency range of 1.0--1.5 GHz, the FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) Survey has discovered more than 600 faint pulsars with flux densities of only a few or a few tens of $\mu$Jy at 1.25 GHz. To obtain accurate position, spin parameters and dispersion measure of a pulsar, and to calculate derived parameters such as the characteristic age and surface magnetic field, we collect available FAST pulsar data obtained either through targeted follow-up observations or through coincidental survey observations with one of the 19 beams of the receiver. From these data we obtain time of arrival (TOA) measurements for 30 newly discovered pulsars as well as for 13 known pulsars. We demonstrate that the TOA measurements acquired by the FAST from any beams of the receiver in any observation mode (e.g. the tracking mode or the snapshot mode) can be combined to get timing solutions. We update the ephemerides of 13 previously known pulsars and obtain the first phase-coherent timing results for 30 isolated pulsars discovered in the FAST GPPS Survey. Notably, PSR J1904+0853 is an isolated millisecond pulsar, PSR J1906+0757 is a disrupted recycled pulsar, and PSR J1856+0211 has a long period of 9.89 s that can constrain pulsar death lines. Based on these timing solutions, all available FAST data have been added together to obtain the best pulse profiles for these pulsars.

Previous studies have identified two emission modes in PSR B1859+07: a normal mode that has three prominent components in the average profile, with the trailing one being the brightest, and an anomalous mode (i.e. the A mode) where emissions seem to be shifted to an earlier phase. Within the normal mode, further analysis has revealed the presence of two sub-modes, i.e. the cW mode and cB mode, where the central component can appear either weak or bright. As for the anomalous mode, a new bright component emerges in the advanced phase while the bright trailing component in the normal mode disappears. New observations of PSR B1859+07 by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) have revealed the existence of a previously unknown emission mode, dubbed as the Af mode. In this mode, all emission components seen in the normal and anomalous modes are detected. Notably, the mean polarization profiles of both the A and Af modes exhibit an orthogonal polarization angle jump in the bright leading component. The polarization angles for the central component in the original normal mode follow two distinct orthogonal polarization modes in the A and Af modes respectively. The polarization angles for the trailing component show almost the same but a small systematic shift in the A and Af modes, roughly following the values for the cW and cB modes. Those polarization features of this newly detected emission mode imply that the anomalous mode A of PSR B1859+07 is not a result of ``phase shift" or ``swooshes" of normal components, but simply a result of the varying intensities of different profile components. During cluster mergers, the intracluster gas and member galaxies undergo dynamic evolution, but at different timescales and reach different states. We collect 24 galaxy clusters in quasi-equilibrium state as indicated by the X-ray image, and calculate the cluster orientations and three kinds of dynamical parameters, i.e., the normalized centroid offset, the sphere index and the ellipticity, for these clusters from the distributions of member galaxies and also the intracluster gas. We find consistent alignments for the orientations estimated from the two components. However, the three kinds of dynamical parameters indicated by member galaxies are systematically larger than those derived from the gas component, suggesting that the gas component is more relaxed than member galaxies. Differences of dynamical features between the intracluster gas and member galaxies are independent of cluster mass and concentration. We are carrying out the GPPS survey by using the FAST, the most sensitive systematic pulsar survey in the Galactic plane. In addition to about 500 pulsars already discovered through normal periodical search, we report here the discovery of 76 new transient radio sources with sporadic strong pulses, detected by using the newly developed module for a sensitive single pulse search. Their small DM values suggest that they all are the Galactic RRATs. More radio pulses have been detected from 26 transient radio sources but no periods can be found due to a limited small number of pulses from all FAST observations. The following-up observations show that 16 transient sources are newly identified as being the prototypes of RRATs with a period already determined from more detected sporadic pulses, 10 sources are extremely nulling pulsars, and 24 sources are weak pulsars with sparse strong pulses. On the other hand, 48 previously known RRATs have been detected by the FAST. Except for 1 RRAT with four pulses detected in a session of five minute observation and 4 RRATs with only one pulse detected in a session, sensitive FAST observations reveal that 43 RRATs are just generally weak pulsars with sporadic strong pulses or simply very nulling pulsars, so that the previously known RRATs always have an extreme emission state together with a normal hardly detectable weak emission state. This is echoed by the two normal pulsars J1938+2213 and J1946+1449 with occasional brightening pulses. Though strong pulses of RRATs are very outstanding in the energy distribution, their polarization angle variations follow the polarization angle curve of the averaged normal pulse profile, suggesting that the predominant sparse pulses of RRATs are emitted in the same region with the same geometry as normal weak pulsars., Comment: Published in RAA

The bright pulsar PSR B0329+54 was previously known for many years to have two emission modes. Sensitive observations of individual pulses reveal that the central component of pulse profile, which is called core component, is found to be very weakened occasionally for some periods and then recovered. This is the newly identified core-weak mode. Based on our long observations of PSR B0329+54 by the Jiamusi 66-m telescope at 2250 MHz, we report here that the profile components of individual pulses, including these for the core and the leading and trailing peaks, are relatedly varying over some periods even before and after the core-weak mode, forming a regular pattern in the phase-vs-time plot for a train of period-folded pulses. The pattern has a similar structure for the core-weak mode with a time scale of 3 to 14 periods. It starts with an intensity brightening at the trailing phase of the core component, and then the core intensity declines to a very low level, as if the core component is drifting out from the normal radiation window within one or two periods. Then the intensity for the trailing components is enhanced, and then the leading component appears at an advanced phase. Such a core-weak mode lasts for several periods. Finally, the core-weak mode ends up with an enhanced intensity at the leading phase for the core component, as if the core gradually comes back and finally stays at the phase of the profile center as it used to., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

A 5$^{\circ}$ $\times$ 7$^{\circ}$ sky area containing two large radio structures of G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9 with a size of about 2.5$^{\circ}$ and 3.5$^{\circ}$ respectively is scanned by using the L-band 19-beam receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The FAST L-band receiver covers a frequency range of 1.0-1.5 GHz. Commissioning of the receiving system, including the measurements of the half-power beam width, gain, and main-beam efficiency is made by observing the calibrators. The multi-channel spectroscopy backend mounted to the receiver allows an in-band spectral-index determination. The brightness-temperature spectral indices of both objects are measured to be $\beta$ $\sim$ $-$2.6 to $-$2.7. Polarized emission is detected from the archival Effelsberg $\lambda$11 cm data for all the shell structures of G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9. These results clearly indicate a non-thermal synchrotron emitting nature, confirming that G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9 are large shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs). As one of the major components of the interstellar medium, the ionized gas in our Milky Way, especially the low-density diffuse component, has not been extensively observed in the radio band. The Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey covers the sky area within the Galactic latitude of $\pm10^\circ$ around the Galactic plane visible by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), and the spectral line data are simultaneously recorded during the pulsar survey observations. With an integration time of 5 minutes for each beam, the GPPS survey project provides the most sensitive piggyback spectra for tens of radio recombination lines (RRLs) in the band of 1000$-$1500 MHz for H$n\alpha$, He$n\alpha$, C$n\alpha$, as well as H$n\beta$ and H$n\gamma$. We processed the spectral data of RRLs, and obtained a sensitive averaged H$n\alpha$ RRL map of a sky area of 88 square degrees in the inner Galaxy of 33$^\circ$ $\leqslant l \leqslant$ 55$^\circ$ and $|b| \leqslant$ 2.0$^\circ$. The final spectral data of the H$n\alpha$ RRLs have a spatial resolution of $\sim$3$^\prime$, a spectral resolution of 2.2 km s$^{-1}$, and a typical spectral rms noise of 0.25 mJy beam$^{-1}$ or 6.3 mK in main-beam brightness temperature. The new H$n\alpha$ RRL map shows complex structural features dominated by a number of HII regions and large extended diffuse ionized gas regions. We detect about 94% of the known HII regions and confirm 43 WISE HII regions in the observed sky area. Several large HII regions or star-forming complexes in the distant outer Galaxy are resolved in the map of H$n\alpha$ RRLs. Extended RRL features of the diffuse ionized gas are detected. Neutral hydrogen (HI) is the fundamental component of the interstellar medium. The Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey is designed for hunting pulsars by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) from the visible Galactic plane within $|b| \leq 10^{\circ}$. The survey observations are conducted with the L-band 19-beam receiver in the frequency range of 1.0 $-$ 1.5 GHz, and each pointing has an integration time of 5 minutes. The piggyback spectral data simultaneously recorded during the FAST GPPS survey are great resources for studies on the Galactic HI distribution and ionized gas. We process the piggyback HI data of the FAST GPPS survey in the region of $33^{\circ} \leq l \leq 55^{\circ}$ and $|b| \leq 2^{\circ}$. The rms of the data cube is found to be approximately 40 mK at a velocity resolution of $0.1$ km s$^{-1}$, placing it the most sensitive observations of the Galactic HI by far. The high velocity resolution and high sensitivity of the FAST GPPS HI data enable us to detect weak exquisite HI structures in the interstellar medium. HI absorption line with great details can be obtained against bright continuum sources. We report the properties of more than 800 bursts detected from the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) during an extremely active episode on UTC September 25-28, 2021 in a series of four papers. In this second paper of the series, we mainly focus on the energy distribution of the detected bursts. The event rate initially increased exponentially but the source activity stopped within 24 hours after the 4th day. The detection of 542 bursts in one hour during the fourth day marked the highest event rate detected from one single FRB source so far. The bursts have complex structures in the time-frequency space. We find a double-peak distribution of the waiting time, which can be modeled with two log-normal functions peaking at 51.22 ms and 10.05 s, respectively. Compared with the emission from a previous active episode of the source detected with FAST, the second distribution peak time is smaller, suggesting that this peak is defined by the activity level of the source. We calculate the isotropic energy of the bursts using both a partial bandwidth and a full bandwidth and find that the energy distribution is not significantly changed. We find that an exponentially connected broken-power-law function can fit the cumulative burst energy distribution well, with the lower and higher-energy indices being $-1.22\pm0.01$ and $-4.27\pm0.23$, respectively. Assuming a radio radiative efficiency of $\eta_r = 10^{-4}$, the total isotropic energy of the bursts released during the four days when the source was active is already $3.9\times10^{46}$ erg, exceeding $\sim 23\%$ of the available magnetar dipolar magnetic energy. We report the properties of more than 800 bursts detected from the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio telescope (FAST) during an extremely active episode on UTC September 25th-28th, 2021 in a series of four papers. In this fourth paper of the series, we present a systematic search of the spin period and linear acceleration of the source object from both 996 individual pulse peaks and the dedispersed time series. No credible spin period was found from this data set. We rule out the presence of significant periodicity in the range between 1 ms to 100 s with a pulse duty cycle $< 0.49\pm0.08$ (when the profile is defined by a von-Mises function, not a boxcar function) and linear acceleration up to $300$ m s$^{-2}$ in each of the four one-hour observing sessions, and up to $0.6$ m s$^{-2}$ in all 4 days. These searches contest theoretical scenarios involving a 1 ms to 100 s isolated magnetar/pulsar with surface magnetic field $<10^{15}$ G and a small duty cycle (such as in a polar-cap emission mode) or a pulsar with a companion star or black hole up to 100 M$_{\rm \odot}$ and $P_b>10$ hours. We also perform a periodicity search of the fine structures and identify 53 unrelated millisecond-timescale "periods" in multi-components with the highest significance of 3.9 $\sigma$. The "periods" recovered from the fine structures are neither consistent nor harmonically related. Thus they are not likely to come from a spin period. We caution against claiming spin periodicity with significance below $\sim$ 4 $\sigma$ with multi-components from one-off FRBs. We report the properties of more than 600 bursts (including cluster-bursts) detected from the repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source FRB 20201124A with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) during an extremely active episode on UTC September 25-28, 2021, in a series of four papers. The observations were carried out in the band of 1.0 - 1.5 GHz by using the center beam of the L-band 19-beam receiver. We monitored the source in sixteen 1-hour sessions and one 3-hour session spanning 23 days. All the bursts were detected during the first four days. In this first paper of the series, we perform a detailed morphological study of 624 bursts using the 2-dimensional frequency-time ``waterfall'' plots, with a burst (or cluster-burst) defined as an emission episode during which the adjacent emission peaks have a separation shorter than 400 ms. The duration of a burst is therefore always longer than 1 ms, with the longest up to more than 120 ms. The emission spectra of the sub-bursts are typically narrow within the observing band with a characteristic width of $\sim$277 MHz. The center frequency distribution has a dominant peak at about 1091.9 MHz and a secondary weak peak around 1327.9 MHz. Most bursts show a frequency-downward-drifting pattern. Based on the drifting patterns, we classify the bursts into five main categories: downward drifting (263) bursts, upward drifting (3) bursts, complex (203), no drifting (35) bursts, and no evidence for drifting (121) bursts. Subtypes are introduced based on the emission frequency range in the band (low, middle, high and wide) as well as the number of components in one burst (1, 2, or multiple). Magnetic fields in the ionized medium of the disk and halo of the Milky Way impose Faraday rotation on linearly polarized radio emission. We compare two surveys mapping the Galactic Faraday rotation, one showing the rotation measures of extragalactic sources seen through the Galaxy (from Hutschenreuter et al 2022), and one showing the Faraday depth of the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission from the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey. Comparing the two data sets in 5deg x 10deg bins shows good agreement at intermediate latitudes, 10 < |b| < 50 deg, and little correlation between them at lower and higher latitudes. Where they agree, both tracers show clear patterns as a function of Galactic longitude: in the Northern Hemisphere a strong sin(2 x longitude) pattern, and in the Southern hemisphere a sin(longitude + pi) pattern. Pulsars with height above or below the plane |z| > 300 pc show similar longitude dependence in their rotation measures. Nearby non-thermal structures show rotation measure shadows as does the Orion-Eridanus superbubble. We describe families of dynamo models that could explain the observed patterns in the two hemispheres. We suggest that a field reversal, known to cross the plane a few hundred pc inside the solar circle, could shift to positive z with increasing Galactic radius to explain the sin(2xlongitude) pattern in the Northern Hemisphere. Correlation shows that rotation measures from extragalactic sources are one to two times the corresponding rotation measure of the diffuse emission, implying Faraday complexity along some lines of sight, especially in the Southern hemisphere., Comment: 37 pages, 26 figures, Ap. Magnetic fields in the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) are a key element in understanding Galactic dynamics, but there are many observational challenges. One useful probe for studying the magnetic field component parallel to the line of sight (LoS) is Faraday rotation of linearly polarized radio synchrotron emission, combined with H$\alpha$ observations. HII regions are the perfect laboratories to probe such magnetic fields as they are localized in space, and are well-defined sources often with known distances and measurable electron densities. We chose the HII region Sharpless 2-27 (Sh 2-27). By using a map of the magnetic field strength along the LoS ($B_{\parallel}$) for the first time, we investigate the basic statistical properties of the turbulent magnetic field inside Sh 2-27. We study the scaling of the magnetic field fluctuations, compare it to the Kolmogorov scaling, and attempt to find an outer scale of the turbulent magnetic field fluctuations. We estimate the median value of $n_e$ as $7.3\pm0.1$ cm$^{-3}$, and the median value of $B_{\parallel}$ as $-4.5\pm0.1$ $\mu$G, which is comparable to the magnetic field strength in diffuse ISM. The slope of the structure function of the estimated $B_{\parallel}$-map is found to be slightly steeper than Kolmogorov, consistent with our Gaussian-random-field $B_{\parallel}$ simulations revealing that an input Kolmogorov slope in the magnetic field results in a somewhat steeper slope in $B_{\parallel}$. These results suggest that the lower limit to the outer scale of turbulence is 10 pc in the HII region, which is comparable to the size of the computation domain. This may indicate that the turbulence probed here could actually be cascading from the larger scales in the ambient medium, associated with the interstellar turbulence in the general ISM, which is illuminated by the presence of Sh 2-27., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. Using photometric data from the Dark Energy Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, we estimate photometric redshifts for 105 million galaxies using the nearest-neighbour algorithm. From such a large data base, 151,244 clusters of galaxies are identified in the redshift range of 0.11. We cross-match these clusters with those in the catalogues identified from the X-ray surveys and the Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) effect by the Planck, South Pole Telescope and Atacama Cosmology Telescope surveys, and get the redshifts for 45 X-ray clusters and 56 SZ clusters. More than 95 percent SZ clusters in the sky region have counterparts in our catalogue. X-ray images of galaxy clusters often show disturbed structures that are indication of cluster mergers. As a complementary to our previous work on dynamical state of 964 clusters observed by the Chandra, we process the X-ray images for 1308 clusters from XMM-Newton archival data, together with the images of 22 clusters newly released by the Chandra, and evaluate their dynamical state from these X-ray images. The concentration index $c$, the centroid shift $\omega$, the power ratio $P_3/P_0$ are calculated in circular regions with a certain radius of 500 kpc, and the morphology index $\delta$ is estimated within elliptical regions adaptive to the cluster size and shape. In addition, the dynamical parameters for 42 clusters previously estimated from Chandra images are upgraded based on the newly available redshifts. Good consistence is found between dynamical parameters derived from XMM-Newton and Chandra images for the overlapped sample of clusters in the two datasets. The origin of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies is still a matter of debate. Observations for intracluster magnetic fields over a wide range of redshifts are crucial to constrain possible scenarios for the origin and evolution of the fields. (Differences of Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of an embedded double radio sources, i.e. a pair of lobes of mostly Fanaroff--Riley type II radio galaxies, are free from the Faraday rotation contributions from the interstellar medium inside the Milky Way and the intergalactic medium between radio galaxies and us, and hence provide a novel way to estimate average magnetic field within galaxy clusters.) We have obtained a sample of 627 pairs whose RMs and redshifts are available in the most updated RM catalogues and redshift databases. The RM differences of the pairs are derived. The statistically large RM differences for pairs of redshifts $z>0.9$ indicate that intracluster magnetic fields is as strong as about 4~$\mu$G. Such strong magnetic fields in the intracluster medium at the half age of the Universe, comparable to intracluster field strength in nearby galaxy clusters, pose a challenge on the theories for origin of cosmic magnetic fields., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed millisecond-duration radio bursts. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1863 bursts in 82 hr over 54 days from the repeating source FRB~20201124A. These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which probes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarisation in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarisation of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarisations as well as polarisation angle as a function of wavelength were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetised immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (au; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy reveal a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low stellar density, interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, updated to match the published version

Using the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS) Low-Band South (LBS) southern sky polarization survey, covering 300 to 480 MHz at 81 arcmin resolution, we reveal the brightest region in the Southern polarized sky at these frequencies. The region, G150-50, covers nearly 20deg$^2$, near (l,b)~(150 deg,-50 deg). Using GMIMS-LBS and complementary data at higher frequencies (~0.6--30 GHz), we apply Faraday tomography and Stokes QU-fitting techniques. We find that the magnetic field associated with G150-50 is both coherent and primarily in the plane of the sky, and indications that the region is associated with Radio Loop II. The Faraday depth spectra across G150-50 are broad and contain a large-scale spatial gradient. We model the magnetic field in the region as an expanding shell, and we can reproduce both the observed Faraday rotation and the synchrotron emission in the GMIMS-LBS band. Using QU-fitting, we find that the Faraday spectra are produced by several Faraday dispersive sources along the line-of-sight. Alternatively, polarization horizon effects that we cannot model are adding complexity to the high-frequency polarized spectra. The magnetic field structure of Loop II dominates a large fraction of the sky, and studies of the large-scale polarized sky will need to account for this object. The Galactic interstellar medium hosts a significant magnetic field, which can be probed through the synchrotron emission produced from its interaction with relativistic electrons. Linearly polarized synchrotron emission is generated throughout the Galaxy, and at longer wavelengths, modified along nearly every path by Faraday rotation in the intervening magneto-ionic medium. Full characterization of the polarized emission requires wideband observations with many frequency channels. We have surveyed polarized radio emission from the Northern sky over the the range 1280-1750 MHz, with channel width 236.8 kHz, using the John A. Galt Telescope (diameter 25.6 m) at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory, as part of the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey. The survey covered 72% of the sky, declinations -30 to +87 degrees at all right ascensions. The intensity scale was absolutely calibrated, based on the flux density and spectral index of Cygnus A. Polarization angle was calibrated using the extended polarized emission of the Fan Region. Data are presented as brightness temperatures with angular resolution 40'. Sensitivity in Stokes Q and U is 45 mK rms in a 1.18 MHz band. We have applied rotation measure synthesis to the data to obtain a Faraday depth cube of resolution 150 radians per square metre and sensitivity 3 mK rms of polarized intensity. Features in Faraday depth up to a width of 110 radians per square metre are represented. The maximum detectable Faraday depth is +/- 20,000 radians per square metre. Discovery of pulsars is one of the main goals for large radio telescopes. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), that incorporates an L-band 19-beam receiver with a system temperature of about 20~K, is the most sensitive radio telescope utilized for discovering pulsars. We designed the {\it snapshot} observation mode for a FAST key science project, the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey, in which every four nearby pointings can observe {\it a cover} of a sky patch of 0.1575 square degrees through beam-switching of the L-band 19-beam receiver. The integration time for each pointing is 300 seconds so that the GPPS observations for a cover can be made in 21 minutes. The goal of the GPPS survey is to discover pulsars within the Galactic latitude of $\pm10^{\circ}$ from the Galactic plane, and the highest priority is given to the inner Galaxy within $\pm5^{\circ}$. Up to now, the GPPS survey has discovered 201 pulsars, including currently the faintest pulsars which cannot be detected by other telescopes, pulsars with extremely high dispersion measures (DMs) which challenge the currently widely used models for the Galactic electron density distribution, pulsars coincident with supernova remnants, 40 millisecond pulsars, 16 binary pulsars, some nulling and mode-changing pulsars and rotating radio transients (RRATs). The follow-up observations for confirmation of new pulsars have polarization-signals recorded for polarization profiles of the pulsars. Re-detection of previously known pulsars in the survey data also leads to significant improvements in parameters for 64 pulsars. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio transients of unknown origin. Two possible mechanisms that could generate extremely coherent emission from FRBs invoke neutron star magnetospheres or relativistic shocks far from the central energy source. Detailed polarization observations may help us to understand the emission mechanism. However, the available FRB polarization data have been perplexing, because they show a host of polarimetric properties, including either a constant polarization angle during each burst for some repeaters or variable polarization angles in some other apparently one-off events. Here we report observations of 15 bursts from FRB 180301 and find various polarization angle swings in seven of them. The diversity of the polarization angle features of these bursts is consistent with a magnetospheric origin of the radio emission, and disfavours the radiation models invoking relativistic shocks., Comment: Published online in Nature on 29 Oct, 2020

We first present a catalogue of photometric redshifts for 14.68 million galaxies derived from the 7-band photometric data of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer using the nearest-neighbour algorithm. The redshift uncertainty is about 0.024 for galaxies of z<0.7, and steadily increases with redshift to about 0.11 at z~2. From such a large data set, we identify 21,661 clusters of galaxies, among which 5537 clusters have redshifts z>1 and 642 clusters have z>1.5, significantly enlarging the high redshift sample of galaxy clusters. Cluster richness and mass are estimated, and these clusters have an equivalent mass of M_{500} > 0.7*10^{14} Msun. We find that the stellar mass of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in each richness bin does not significantly evolve with redshift. Most of pulsar nulling observations were conducted at frequencies lower than 1400~MHz. We aim to understand the nulling behaviors of pulsars at relatively high frequency, and to check if nulling is caused by a global change of pulsar magnetosphere. 20 bright pulsars are observed at 2250~MHz with unprecedented lengths of time by using Jiamusi 66m telescope. Nulling fractions of these pulsars are estimated, and the null and emission states of pulses are identified. Nulling degrees and scales of the emission-null pairs are calculated to describe the distributions of emission and null lengths. Three pulsars, PSRs J0248+6021, J0543+2329 and J1844+00, are found to null for the first time. The details of null-to-emission and emission-to-null transitions within pulse window are first observed for PSR J1509+5531, which is a small probability event. A complete cycle of long nulls for hours is observed for PSR J1709-1640. For most of these pulsars, the K-S tests of nulling degrees and nulling scales reject the hypothesis that null and emission are of random processes at high significance levels. Emission-null sequences of some pulsars exhibit quasi-periodic, low-frequency or featureless modulations, which might be related to different origins. During transitions between emission and null states, pulse intensities have diverse tendencies for variations. Significant correlations are found for nulling fraction, nulling cadence and nulling scales with the energy loss rate of the pulsars. Combined with the nulling fractions reported in literatures for 146 nulling pulsars, we found that statistically large nulling fractions are more tightly related to pulsar period than to characteristic age or energy loss rate., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures, 3 appendices, accepted for publication in A&A

As radio telescopes become sensitive, radio frequency interference (RFI) is more and more serious for interesting signals of radio astronomy. There exist demands for developing an automatic, accurate and efficient RFI mitigation method. Therefore, this work investigated the RFI detection algorithm. Firstly, we introduced an Asymmetrically Reweighted Penalized Least Squares (ArPLS) method to estimate baseline more accurately. After removing the estimated baseline, several novel strategies were proposed based on the SumThreshold algorithm for detecting different types of RFI. The threshold parameter in the SumThreshold can be determined automatically and adaptively. The adaptiveness is essential for reducing human interventions and the online RFI processing pipeline. Applications to FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope) data show that the proposed scheme based on the ArPLS and SumThreshold is superior to some typically available methods for RFI detection with respect to efficiency and performance., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

The dynamical state of galaxy clusters describes if clusters are relaxed dynamically or in a merging process of subclusters. By using archival images from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we derive a set of parameters to describe the dynamical state for 964 galaxy clusters. Three widely used indicators for dynamical state, the concentration index c, the centroid shift omega and the power ratio P3/P0 are calculated in the circular central region with a radius of 500 kpc. We also derive two adaptive parameters, the profile parameter kappa and the asymmetry factor alpha, in the best fitted elliptical region. The morphology index delta is then defined by combining these two adaptive parameters, which indicates the dynamical state of galaxy clusters and has good correlations to the concentration index c, the centroid shift omega, the power ratio P3/P0, and the optical relaxation factor Gamma. For a large sample of clusters, the dynamical parameters are continuously distributed from the disturbed to relaxed states with a peak in the between, rather than the bimodal distribution for the two states. We find that the newly derived morphology index delta works for the similar fundamental plane between the radio power, cluster mass and the dynamical state for clusters with diffuse radio giant-halos and mini-halos. The offset between masses estimated from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect and X-ray images depends on dynamical parameters. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious millisecond-duration radio transients of unknown origin observed at extragalactic distances. It has been long speculated that magnetars are the engine powering repeating bursts from FRB sources, but no convincing evidence has been collected so far\cite{sun19}. Recently, the Galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 entered an active phase by emitting intense soft Gamma-ray bursts. One FRB-like event with two peaks (FRB 200428) and a luminosity slightly lower than the faintest extragalactic FRBs was detected from the source, in association with a soft Gamma-ray / hard X-ray flare. Here we report an eight-hour targeted radio observational campaign comprising four sessions and assisted by multi-wavelength (optical and hard X-rays) data. During the third session, 29 soft Gamma-ray repeater (SGR) bursts were detected in Gamma-ray energies. Throughout the observing period, we detected no single dispersed pulsed emission coincident with the arrivals of SGR bursts, but unfortunately we were not observing when the FRB was detected. The non-detection places a fluence upper limit that is eight orders of magnitude lower than the fluence of FRB 200428. Our results suggest that FRB -- SGR burst associations are rare. FRBs may be highly relativistic and geometrically beamed, or FRB-like events associated with SGR bursts may have narrow spectra and characteristic frequencies outside the observed band.
