Layered double hydroxide (LDH) platelets with nanosized and microsized level were synthesized and used as fillers in an isotactic polypropylene (PP) matrix. The nucleation and crystallization behavior of PP/LDH composites (denoted as 1-PPLx and 2-PPLx for composites containing nanosized and microsized LDH, respectively; x represents the mass percentage of LDH) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy techniques. It is found that the crystallization temperature of PP/LDH composites is largely enhanced and the half crystallization time is reduced remarkably relative to pure PP, especially for 2-PPLx composite. The 2-PPLx composite exhibits stronger heterogeneous nucleating ability and faster crystallization rate than 1-PPLx samples with the same LDH loading. In addition, the crystallized PP/LDH composites possess significantly enhanced thermal stability, gas barrier, and flame-retardant properties relative to neat PP, which would show a broad application prospect in engineering plastics and packing industry.

The use of two‐dimensional materials shows great promise for the development of next‐generation membrane materials, thanks to their atomic thinness and the ease with which precise nanochannels can be constructed. Among these materials, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) stand out as an important class, possessing many features that make them ideal for constructing high‐performance membranes. LDHs offer many advantages, such as their abundant and tunable interlayer anions, which enable the preparation of membranes with adjustable sub‐nanometer pore sizes. Additionally, their hydrophilicity and positive charge characteristics afford them unique benefits. LDHs have been found to be effective in gas separation, ion sieving, and nanofiltration. This review provides a summary of the latest progress in using LDHs for membrane separation. It begins by introducing the basic properties of LDHs, followed by the assembly strategy for LDH membranes. Furthermore, the review presents the research status of LDHs membranes in various fields in a systematic manner. A carbonate intercalated magnesium aluminum layered double hydroxide is used as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, displaying a maximum discharge specific capacity of 814 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 in this work through utilizing the valence variation of Mg and the conversion between LiOH and LiH/Li2O. Membranes with precise molecular sieving channels that break the permeability‐selectivity trade‐off are desirable for energy‐efficient gas separation. Two‐dimensional (2D) membranes sieve gas through their special interlayer channels between neighboring nanosheets. However, the regulation and precise control of the nanochannels that match well with the size of the gas molecules remains a big challenge. Herein, accurate tuning of the interlayer spacing of layered double hydroxide (LDH) membranes at sub‐nanometer level was achieved by intercalation of Cl−, Br−, I−, and NO3− ions. Such high‐precision control allows customizable gas separation by selecting specific LDH membranes with appropriate channels according to the size of the gas molecules. Two membranes were used for demonstration: Cl‐LDH membrane shows high H2 permeance of ∼1870 GPU and desirable selectivities for H2/CO2(81), H2/N2(197), H2/CH4(320), and H2/C3H8(603); while I‐LDH membrane displays CO2 permeance of ∼1780 GPU and CO2/N2, CO2/CH4 selectivities of 182 and 297, respectively. The simultaneously high permeabilities and selectivities surpass the 2008 Robeson upper bounds. Molecular dynamics simulations quantitatively support the experiment results, further confirming the significant role of interlayer anions in the regulation of gas‐sieving channels. Given the rich variability of layered spacing and interlayer microenvironment for LDH materials, this work provides a platform membrane for various molecular sieving, including gas separation, solvent purification, seawater desalination, and so on. A hierarchical structure is successfully synthesized by coating polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of carbon/saponite superlattice (denoted as PPy@C/SAP), and applied as low volume‐expansion insertion‐type anode for Li, Na, K storage.The synergistic effect of metal Ni, Fe doping, carbon/silicate superlattice, abundant oxygen vacancies and PPy coating leads to a good electronic conductivity and large current discharging capability. As a Si‐based material, PPy@C/SAP has excellent storage capability for Li (659 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1 and 550 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 5 A g−1), Na (maximum specific capacity of 533 and 327 mAh g−1 after 50 cycles) as well as K (236 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles). XPS, XANES, XRD, FTIR, HRTEM, SEM are used to detect the hybrid mechanism (bulk insertion and surface conversion) with a volume expansion as low as 9%. Insertion reaction driven by valence state change of Ni, Fe, Si (Ni0⇔Ni2+, Fe0⇔Fe3+, Si2+⇔Si4+) in laminates and conversion reactions between LiOH/Li2CO3 and LiH/Li2C2 catalyzed by Ni° contribute to the high performance. In the whole electrochemical process, layered structure is retained while the conversion reactions of LiOH (prodeced by laminates dehydroxylation) and Li2CO3 (electrolyte decomposition) cause the dynamic evolution of solid ectrolyte interphase. This study develops a promising Si‐based anode material for lithium ion batteries, sodium ion batteries and potassium ion batteries, which is significant for designing long cycle life rechargeable batteries. In this work, MgAl-layered double hydroxides (LDH) were synthesized by co-precipitation method using a colloid mill and characterized by XRD and SEM. It was found that the environmentally friendly LDHs had greater performance than the traditional antioxidant. By adding LDHs into large electric shovel grease (GRK-A) in open-pit coal mine, the service lifetime of grease was extended by 20%. With the increase in LDH addition, the grease sample attains greater activation energy, and the thermal oxidation and decomposition resistance become stronger. Comparing the energy storage modulus and flow transition index at different temperatures, adding the right amount of LDHs needs close attention for the system oxidation resistance and viscoelasticity. For the electric shovel grease, the best oxidation resistance and rheological properties can be achieved by adding 2% of LDHs. The rheological viscosity–temperature curves show that the grease samples with different ratios of solid LDHs have better low-temperature properties than the mine grease. This work outlines a simple method for creating an environmentally sustainable lubricant additive with the use of LDH.
