The formation mechanism of Cd–S–Se quantum dots (QDs) with a CdS/CdSe core–shell structure within a silicate glass system was investigated by monitoring the change in the first excitonic absorption peak of CdSe, CdS, and Cd–S–Se QDs as a function of the heat‐treatment (HT) duration. When a silicate glass containing QD formation components for CdSe or CdS single‐phased QDs was heat‐treated, CdSe QDs grew via Ostwald ripening, whereas CdS QDs hardly formed within the given silicate glass matrix. When the glass, including CdO, ZnSe, and ZnS, was utilized for the synthesis of Cd–S–Se QDs within the glass matrix, Cd–S–Se QDs were successfully formed and exhibited similar growth behavior to CdSe QDs during the initial stage of HT. The structural changes in the QD‐embedded glasses during HT were also monitored by Raman spectroscopy and discussed, and a possible formation mechanism of CdSe/CdS core–shell‐structured QDs within silicate glasses is suggested. A 65‐year‐old woman with a resolved history of epilepsy due to a motor vehicle accident and hippocampal sclerosis presented with recurrent de novo seizures. Brain imaging demonstrated enhancement in the left parieto‐occipital lobe. At histopathological examination, the lesion displayed a diffuse lymphoid infiltrate comprised of small atypical lymphocytes, plasmacytoid lymphocytes, and scattered plasma cells with amyloid deposition. Pathology workup demonstrated a monotypic B‐cell phenotype of the lymphoid infiltrate, expressing lambda light chain restriction and plasmacytic differentiation without MYD88 mutations. The patient had no systemic evidence of lymphoma, plasma cell dyscrasia, or amyloidosis. Case Presentation: A 62-year-old woman with a long-term smoking history was evaluated at our lung cancer clinic for a new 2.5-cm lung nodule. She had a history of well-controlled COPD and hypertension. She was in overall good health until 3 weeks before her evaluation in an ED for new-onset exertional dyspnea. Her physical examination was unremarkable, except for diffuse hyperpigmented scaly scalp lesions that coalesced into plaques. Her subjective symptoms were nonproductive cough, exertional dyspnea, unintentional weight loss of 10 lb, and fatigue that had started 2 months earlier. She did not have fever or night sweats. Cd‐S‐Se quantum dot embedded glasses (QDEGs) with dual‐band emissions of green and red were synthesized by assembling two QDEGs, to obtain a color converter for white LEDs (wLEDs) with a wide color gamut and long‐term stability. Each QDEG, possessing different sizes of QD, was prepared by adjusting heat‐treatment conditions. They were then bonded to each other by an additional heat treatment to fabricate a pattern structured QDEG (pQDEG). The fabrication conditions of the pQDEGs, such as their heat‐treatment condition and thickness, were varied to improve the color gamut. pQDEG‐based WLEDs were demonstrated and their optical properties such as color coordinates, luminous efficiency, and color rendering index (CRI) were monitored. Thick‐film phosphor‐in‐glasses (PiGs) were fabricated via a screen‐printing method with various phosphor layer structures, to compose a white light emitting diode (LED). Green (Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+) and red (CaAlSiN3:Eu2+) phosphors were mixed, layered, and patterned on a glass substrate. The chromaticity of each structured PiG was tuned to achieve a white LED by varying phosphor content and thickness. The emission spectra and the related various color conversion properties, including color coordinates, correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI), luminous efficacy (LE) and the color gamut of the mounted PiGs with different phosphor layer structures were examined and compared. Time‐resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements of the white LEDs with various phosphor layer structural designs were also obtained and compared. Quantum dot embedded glasses (QDEGs) were prepared by the conventional melt‐quenching method to enhance its color conversion efficiency via optimizing the concentration of ZnS, ZnSe, and CdO within the silicate‐based glass matrix. The QDEG, which contained 0.875 ZnS, 0.625 ZnSe, and 0.75 CdO (in mol%) and was heat treated at 500°C for 10 hours showed promising color conversion with an improved quantum yield of up to 25%. Color coordination of light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) mounted with the QDEGs could be adjusted by tuning heat‐treatment conditions and thickness control of QDEGs. The practical feasibility of the QDEG for a white LED is demonstrated with a reasonable glass thickness for LED packaging process. The formation of Cd‐S‐Se quantum dots within a glass matrix was identified by Raman and HR‐TEM analyses. Nd3+-doped silicate glass (Nd-glass) was employed as a color filter for a white LED based on red and green phosphor (RG-LED), to manipulate the photoluminescence spectral shape and thus to provide a wider color gamut. The hypersensitive transition of Nd3+:4I9/2→4G5/2,2G7/2 was adjusted via glass composition and Nd concentration, and improved absorbance as well as reduced the absorption bandwidth. The effective absorption of the Nd-glass at ~580 nm reduced the spectral linewidth of the green and red emissions, improving the color reproduction range. The color gamut of the RG-LED was improved from 75.3% to 81.6% NTSC by the introduction of Nd-glass as a color filter. A new Lagrangian conditional moment closure (CMC) model is developed for multiple Lagrangian groups of sequentially evaporating fuel in turbulent spray combustion. Flame group interaction is taken into account as premixed combustion by the eddy breakup (EBU) model in terms of the probability of finding flame groups in the burned and the unburned state. Evaporation source terms are included in the two phase conditional transport equations, although they turn out to have negligible influence on the mean temperature field during combustion. The Lagrangian CMC model is implemented in OpenFOAM [1] and validated for test cases in the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) [2,3]. Similar ignition delays and lift-off lengths are predicted by the incompletely stirred reactor (ISR) and the Eulerian CMC models due to relatively uniform conditional flame structure in the domain. The improved Lagrangian CMC model shows no abrupt reaction or oscillatory behaviour with an appropriate model constantKand gives results in better agreement with measurements lying between the predictions by ISR and Lagrangian CMC without flame group interaction. Phosphor in glasses (PiGs) were fabricated for color tunable white LEDs using glass of the SiO 2 -B 2 O 3 -ZnO-Na 2 O system, which can be sintered at 550 °C. CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2 + (CASN:Eu 2 + ) red phosphor was added without its thermal degradation, and a mixture with Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3 + (YAG:Ce 3 + ) yellow phosphor demonstrated color tunable white LEDs when mounted on a blue LED. Variation of the glass to phosphor and phosphor to phosphor mixing ratio achieved a highly improved color rendering index (CRI), of up to 93. Thermal quenching property was also improved, reaching 98% of its original intensity even at 200 °C; the value depended on the phosphor content. Thermal conductivity values elucidate the improvement. A complete inorganic quantum dot color converter for a white LED is achieved using silicate-based quantum-dot-embedded glasses (QDEGs). The white LED exhibits a high CRI of 90 and highly improved thermal stability up to 200 °C, demonstrating its robustness and practicality. Silicate glasses with CdS and CdSe quantum dots ( QDs) were synthesized for application as an inorganic color converter for a 450-nm blue light-emitting diode ( LED). CdO and ZnS (or ZnSe) were added, and heat treatment conditions were changed to control QD formation within the silicate matrix. Absorption spectra and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed the QD formation. Variations in absorption and photoluminescence ( PL) spectra were observed with CdSe QD-embedded glasses when heat treatment conditions varied, whereas glasses with CdS QDs did not show noticeable variation. QD-embedded glasses were then mounted on top of a 450-nm LED chip to make a color-converted LED, and their electroluminescence and PL spectra as well as CIE color coordinates were investigated. The conditional moment closure (CMC) method with tabulated chemistry is proposed to reduce the computational load for integration of stiff reaction steps in the conventional CMC methods. It is based on the assumption that temperature and all species except CO and CO 2 adjust fast enough so that they can be uniquely determined by the single reaction progress variable given as the sum of CO and CO 2 mass fractions. The CMC equations are solved for the conditional reaction progress variable, Q p v , whereas the other species mass fractions and the reaction rates including that for Q p v are retrieved from lookup tables. A steady homogeneous form of the conditional variance and covariance equations are solved to construct the second-order closure table to be consistent with Steady Laminar Flamelet Model (SLFM)-based first-order closure. Good agreement is shown between the results by integrated and tabulated chemistry in both the first-order and the second-order CMC for Sandia Flames D, E and F. The overall computational time is reduced to about 0.5% of that by the conventional CMC method involving integration of the detailed reaction mechanism for all species and temperature. Abstract: In this report, we describe using ultraviolet (UV)-assisted capillary force lithography (CFL) to create a model substratum of anisotropic micro- and nanotopographic pattern arrays with variable local density for the analysis of cell–substratum interactions. A single cell adhesion substratum with the constant ridge width (1μm), and depth (400nm) and variable groove widths (1–9.1μm) allowed us to characterize the dependence of cellular responses, including cell shape, orientation, and migration, on the anisotropy and local density of the variable micro- and nanotopographic pattern. We found that fibroblasts adhering to the denser pattern areas aligned and elongated more strongly along the direction of ridges, vs. those on the sparser areas, exhibiting a biphasic dependence of the migration speed on the pattern density. In addition, cells responded to local variations in topography by altering morphology and migrating along the direction of grooves biased by the direction of pattern orientation (short term) and pattern density (long term), suggesting that single cells can sense the topography gradient. Molecular dynamic live cell imaging and immunocytochemical analysis of focal adhesions and actin cytoskeleton suggest that variable substratum topography can result in distinct types of cytoskeleton reorganization. We also demonstrate that fibroblasts cultured as monolayers on the same substratum retain most of the properties displayed by single cells. This result, in addition to demonstrating a more sophisticated method to study aspects of wound healing processes, strongly suggests that even in the presence of adhesive cell–cell interactions, the cues provided by the underlying substratum topography continue to exercise substantial influence on cell behavior. The described experimental platform might not only further our understanding of biomechanical regulation of cell–matrix interactions, but also contribute to bioengineering of devices with the optimally structured design of cell–material interface. Objective Unravel the potential mechanism(s) of the on- and off-target actions of dopamine agonist therapy in both human prolactinoma tumors and neighboring stromal and immune cells. Design and Methods Five surgically resected prolactinomas (PRLomas) from 3 cabergoline (CBG)-treated patients and 2 treatment-naive patients were analyzed by using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to compare the cellular composition and transcriptional landscape. Results Six major cell populations, namely tumor (88.2%), immune (5.6%), stromal (4.9%), progenitor cells (0.6%), proliferating cells (0.4%), and erythrocytes (0.2%), were observed. Tumor cells from CBG-treated patients expressed lower levels of genes that regulated hormone secretion, such as SCG2, VGF, TIMP1, NNAT, and CALD1, consistent with the inhibitory effects of CBG on hormone processing and secretion. Interestingly, we also observed an increased number of CD8+ T cells in the CBG-treated tissues. These cytotoxic CD8+ T cells expressed killing granule components such as perforin and the granzymes GZMB, GNLY, and KLRD1 as well as the inflammatory cytokine CCL5. Immune cell activation of these CD8+ T cells was further analyzed in a compartment-specific manner, and increased CD25 (IL2R) expression was noted in the CD8+ T cells from the CBG-treated samples. Additionally, and confirming prior reports, we noted a higher stromal cell population in the CBG-treated samples. Conclusions Our scRNA-seq studies revealed key differences in the transcriptomic features of CBG-treated and CBG-untreated PRLomas in both tumor and microenvironment cellular constituents, and for the first time, describe the previously unknown activation of CD8+ T cells following CBG treatment, which may play a role in the tumoricidal actions of CBG. • Aluminosilicate glasses varying P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 were chemically strengthened. • Compressive stress and depth of layer were varied with P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 content. • Interdiffusion coefficient was increased with P 2 O 5 and decreased with B 2 O 3. • Modification of glass structure by P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 was responsible for the change. Sodium alumino-silicate (SAS) glasses were synthesized with varying P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 contents, and their effect on chemical strengthening properties such as surface compressive stress (CS) and depth of layer (DOL) was examined. When P 2 O 5 replaced SiO 2 , CS decreased, while DOL increased with P 2 O 5 content. In contrast, B 2 O 3 improved CS at the expense of DOL. The simultaneous addition of P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 with varying ratios also changed CS and DOL depending on the P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3 content. The interdiffusion coefficients of K+ ions in SAS glasses were estimated using the Boltzmann–Matano equation and supported the observed effects of P 2 O 5 and B 2 O 3. Various rare earth (RE) oxides such as Pr 2 O 3 , Dy 2 O 3 , Ho 2 O 3 , and Er 2 O 3 were introduced into Cd–S–Se quantum dot embedded glasses (QDEGs) to investigate their effect on the color conversion properties of the Cd–S–Se QDEGs. The absorption and emission peak wavelengths due to the excitonic transition of the Cd–S–Se QDs were modified by the introduction of RE oxides, implying their influence on QD formation. The photoluminescence of the various QDEGs RE oxides under 450 nm excitation were monitored and compared with the un-doped QDEGs. White LEDs (wLEDs) were also fabricated with the RE-doped QDEGs and their color conversion properties, such as quantum yield (QY), luminous efficacy, correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI) were examined. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) revealed that the size and spatial distribution of the QDs were improved by the RE-oxides. This study reports the results of a detailed analysis of 203 samples of bioliquid used as a substitute for heavy fuel oil in oil-fired power plants. Bioliquid is a mixture of various vegetable oils, animal fats and its byproducts. The heating value of bioliquid is approximately the same as that of heavy fuel oil; however, bioliquid has significantly less N and S components and exhibits better combustion reactivity. For a commercial electricity generation, demonstration tests firing bioliquid in 75, 90, and 100 MW oil-fired boilers were conducted, and the results were compared with those obtained by firing heavy fuel oil. Further, the impacts of bioliquid fuel characteristics on combustion and boiler operation were also investigated. During the bioliquid firing, the heat absorption in the furnace decreased and the furnace exit gas temperature increased in comparison to the heavy fuel oil firing. No serious problems occurred in the boiler operation, and NOx and SOx emissions remarkably decreased. With minor modifications on the fuel transfer system and atomization devices, bioliquid could successfully replace heavy fuel oil in the existing oil-fired boilers. This study compared the combustion characteristics between bioliquid and heavy fuel oil using a 0.7 MWth pilot furnace and a 75 MWe power generation boiler. The bioliquid flame in the pilot furnace was clearer and more transparent, but higher gas temperature in the burner zone, compared to the heavy fuel oil flame. It might be due to higher sooting tendency of the heavy fuel oil flame. Due to the lower N and S contents in bioliquid, NOx and SOx emissions were significantly reduced in the bioliquid combustion tests. For the bioliquid demonstration in a 75 MWe power generation boiler, bioliquid firing led to decrease in heat flux to the furnace wall, so the furnace exit gas temperature was increased, comparing to the heavy fuel oil firing. Subsequently, the heat absorption in the first pass of the boiler was increased and finally it led to the increase in reheater de-superheating water spray flow rate. Significant reductions in NOx and SOx emissions were achieved with bioliquid firing. Phosphor-in-glass (PiG) thick film was fabricated on a borosilicate glass substrate using a conventional screen printing method and employing phosphosilicate glass to allow low-temperature sintering. The vehicle content and sintering temperature were optimized to form a thick film with a thickness of ~50 μm. Commercial yellow (Y3Al5O12:Ce3+) and red (CaAlSiN3:Eu2+) phosphors were successfully incorporated within the glass matrix and then sintered at 550°C. Color-tunable white LEDs were achieved using the PiG thick films as a color converter by varying the glass to phosphor (GtP) ratio. The high luminous efficacy of up to ~120 lm/W and high color rendering index of up to 89 in combination with the thermal quenching property prove the practical feasibility of the PiG thick films for high-power/high-brightness LED applications. This paper investigated the combustion and emission characteristics of a reprocessed used lubricating oil (RULO) with a pilot combustion test furnace to assess the possibility for using it as a fuel for boiler cold start-up operation. Results were compared with those of a by-product fuel oil (BFO) presently used in the power plant. Fuel analysis and testing showed that both oils had similar fuel properties, but RULO represented less reactivity and larger sprayed particle diameter than BFO. The cold start-up combustion tests revealed that RULO was ignited later and furnace exit temperatures was higher in RULO combustion, compared to those in BFO combustion. NOx emission in RULO combustion was about 10 ppm higher due to the higher fuel-N, and particulate emissions, thought to be agglomerated unburned carbonaceous particles, were severer in RULO combustion test than BFO combustion test. In this paper, the glass systems, TeO2–ZnO–BaO (TZB), TeO2–ZnO–BaO–Nb2O5 (TZB–Nb) and TeO2–ZnO–BaO–MoO3 (TZB–Mo), were fabricated by the traditional melt-quench protocol for use as mid-infrared (mid-IR) transmitting optical material. The effect of Nb2O5 and MoO3 on the key glass material properties was studied through various techniques. From the Raman analysis, it was found that the structural modification was clear with the addition of both Nb2O5 and MoO3 in the TZB system. The transmittance of studied glasses was measured and found that the optical window covered a region from 0.4 to 6 μm. The larger linear refractive index was obtained for the Nb2O5-doped TZB glass system than that of other studied systems. High glass transition temperature, low thermo-mechanical coefficient and high Knoop hardness were noticed in the Nb2O5-doped TZB glass system due to the increase in cross-linking density and rigidity in the tellurite network.
