We carried out transient absorption spectroscopy of thioflavin T (ThT) molecules in various solvents employing an asynchronous optical sampling (ASOPS) scheme with dual synchronized and frequency up-converted mode-lock lasers in the near UV (NUV) spectral region. We developed a pair of synchronized femtosecond lasers with tunable center wavelengths ranging from 380 to 430 nm and spectral bandwidths of 30 nm. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we measured interferometrically detected time and frequency-resolved pump–probe signals of ThT in various solvents to study the twisted intramolecular charge transfer process of photo-excited ThT molecules. Both single-color NUV-NUV and two-color NUV-near IR (NIR) pump–probe measurements reveal that the vibronic coupling strengths of two vibrational modes with frequencies of 214 and 526 cm−1 in the excited state of ThT are reduced when ThT is dissolved in a chlorine-containing solvent, e.g., chloroform. We confirm theoretically that these vibrational modes have relatively high electric dipole moments in the excited state. As a result, the intramolecular charge transfer process of ThT in chloroform, which is driven by the solvation process of surrounding polar solvent molecules, could occur less efficiently, which results in an increase in the fluorescence quantum yield. ZnO nanoparticles with different shapes and sizes were prepared by changing coordinating ligands. Hexagonal cones presented UV and green (∼500 nm) emissions, which originated from excitons and defects, respectively. Oxygen vacancies were found to be major defects in the hexagonal cones. Blue emission at ∼440 nm was observed for hexagonal plates, and analyses of time-resolved photoluminescence spectra showed that two transitions were responsible for this blue emission, because transitions from Zni to the valence band (430 nm) and from Zni to VZn (480 nm) were distinguished by emission wavelengths and lifetimes. A benzoanthracene-cored deep blue-emitting compound, N 6 ,N 9 -bis(4-cyano-phenyl)- N 3 ,N 9 -diphenylspiro[benzo[ de ]anthracene-7,9′-fluorene]-3,9-diamine was synthesized and which has an exchange energy of ∼0.2 eV between the singlet and triplet state. OLED devices doped with this new deep blue emitter showed comparable device performances and delayed fluorescence via the reoccupation of the singlet excitons from the triplet excitons with long lifetimes. In particular, the 10%-doped device exhibited the maximum external quantum efficiency of 14.8% and current efficiency of 15.1 cd/A with Commission International de L'Edairge coordinates of (0.14, 0.11). Abstract: Optical properties of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles prepared in supercritical methanol and supercritical water were investigated. Interstitial zinc and oxygen vacancy were the major defects in the ZnO nanoparticles synthesized in supercritical methanol. The addition of oleic acid as a surface modifier resulted in the isolation of the nanoparticles and the removal of interstitial zinc. Lasing was observed with sharp longitudinal modes and a superlinear increase in the emission intensity of the ZnO nanowires synthesized in supercritical water. The band gap renormalization due to the electron–hole plasma induced a red-shift in the emission band, whereas the individual longitudinal modes were blue-shifted due to a change in refractive index. Abstract: The triplet state of 4,4′,4″-tris(3-methylphenylphenylamino)triphenylamine (m-MTDATA) and the dynamics of the singlet and the triplet states were examined to understand the confinement effect of m-MTDATA as host materials for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes. The time-resolved photoluminescence spectra revealed phosphorescence at approximately 480nm (2.58eV). The time constant of the T 1 state was 1.2μs. The dynamics of delayed fluorescence was closely related to that of phosphorescence. The triplet energy of a green phosphorescent sensitizer was well-confined in the m-MTDATA host, which suggests the application of m-MTDATA as possible host materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to their frequency scaling and long-term coherence, frequency combs at the single-photon level can provide a fascinating platform for developments in quantum technology. Here we demonstrate frequency comb single-photon interferometry in an unheralded manner. We are able to induce coherence by erasing the which-way information of path-entangled photon pairs. The photon pairs are prepared using a dual parametric down-conversion pumped by a highly stable frequency comb laser and an ultra-narrow seed laser. This is conducted at the extremely low-conversion efficiency regime. The unique feature of our quantum interferometer is that the induced one-photon interference of the path-encoded single photons (signal), with multiple frequency components, is observed with a unit visibility without heralding conjugate photons (idler). We demonstrate that quantum information and frequency comb technology can be combined to realize quantum information platforms. We expect this will contribute to the application of quantum information and optical measurements beyond the classical limit. Optical frequency combs are important technology used in physics to distinguish between waves of different frequency. The authors have demonstrated experimentally and theoretically that quantum coherence of single photons with frequency comb characteristics can be induced by erasing which-path information of a pair of entangled photons. The deactivation process of adenine excited near the band origin of the lowest ππ* state (1Lb) is investigated using picosecond (ps) time-resolved photoionization spectroscopy. The transients obtained with a ps pump pulse at the sharp vibronic bands, 36 105 cm-1 (D) and 36 248 cm-1 (E), in the resonant two-photon ionization spectrum exhibit a bi-exponential decay with two distinct time constants of τ1 ∼ 2 ps and τ2 > 100 ps, whereas the transients with the pump at other wavenumbers in this energy region show a single exponential decay with τ = 1-2 ps. We suggest that the τ1 represents the lifetimes of the 1nπ* energy levels near the D and E peaks, which are excited together by the ps pump pulse having a broad spectral bandwidth, and the τ2 shows the lifetimes of D and E peaks. The long lifetime of D level is attributed to a small barrier for internal conversion from the minimum of the 1Lb state to the 1nπ* state. On the other hand, the long lifetime of E level is ascribed to the nuclear configuration of adenine at this level, which is unfavorable to reach the seam of the conical intersection leading to nearly barrierless deactivation to the electronic ground state. This study shows that the ps time-resolved spectroscopy provides a powerful tool to study mode- and energy-specific deactivation processes occurring in a multi-dimensional potential energy surface. Abstract: Antimony (Sb) doping of SnO2 nanowires (NWs) was investigated for its optical and electrical effects. The low-temperature photoluminescence spectra of SnO2 NWs varied significantly with increasing Sb content, where the temperature-dependence of the visible emission at ca. 400nm was distinctive with Sb-doping, indicating different defect states, such as neutral and positively charged oxygen vacancies. Field effect transistors (FETs) with low-level Sb-doped SnO2 NW channels exhibited higher mobility, charge concentration, and faster response and recovery to UV light than intrinsic SnO2 NW FETs.
