Abstract

The atmosphere of Triton was probed directly by observing a ground-based stellar occultation on 6 October 2022. This rare event yielded 23 positive light curves collected from 13 separate observation stations contributing to our campaign. The significance of this event lies in its potential to directly validate the modest pressure fluctuation on Triton, a phenomenon not definitively verified by previous observations, including only five stellar occultations, and the Voyager 2 radio occultation in 1989. Using an approach consistent with a comparable study, we precisely determined a surface pressure of $14.07_{-0.13}^{+0.21}~\mathrm{\mu bar}$ in 2022. This new pressure rules out any significant monotonic variation in pressure between 2017 and 2022 through direct observations, as it is in alignment with the 2017 value. Additionally, both the pressures in 2017 and 2022 align with the 1989 value. This provides further support for the conclusion drawn from the previous volatile transport model simulation, which is consistent with the observed alignment between the pressures in 1989 and 2017; that is to say, the pressure fluctuation is modest. Abstract

Superconducting pairing symmetry are crucial in understanding the microscopic superconducting mechanism of a superconductor. Here we report the observation of a twofold superconducting gap symmetry in an interfacial superconductor Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$/FeTe, by employing quasiparticle interference (QPI) technique in scanning tunneling microscopy and macroscopic magnetoresistance measurements. The QPI patterns corresponding to energies inside and outside the gap reveal a clear anisotropic superconducting gap. Furthermore, both the in-plane angle-dependent magnetoresistance and in-plane upper critical field exhibit a clear twofold symmetry. This twofold symmetry align with the Te-Te direction in FeTe, which weakens the possible generation by bi-collinear antiferromagnetism order. Our finding provides key information in further understanding of the topological properties in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$/FeTe superconducting system and propels further theoretical interests in the paring mechanism in the system.

3. Strategy for Ensuring China’s Food Security through Planting Industry in the New Era

Abstract

The planting industry is crucial in ensuring food security in China. The development of the planting industry has underpinned the country’s historic transition from merely achieving food sufficiency to enjoying high-quality diets, consequently promoting the gradual improvement of dietary quality among residents. In the new era, the development of the Chinese planting industry faces challenges from internal and external risk factors, such as resource environment pressure, extreme climate impacts, and unstable international geopolitical situations. This study predicts the food supply and demand situations in 2035 and 2050. Results show that net imports of grain in China will mainly focus on soybeans and corn, while the self-sufficiency rate of rapeseed and sugar will continue to decline, the self-sufficient rate of peanuts and fruits will rise after declining first, and the vegetables will be more than self-sufficient. Thus, this study provides an overview and summary of the challenges faced by China’s planting industry regarding food security and proposes strategic ideas and policy recommendations for ensuring food security in the new era. These recommendations include improving the planting industry’s production capacity and structure, promoting low-carbon production and the efficient use of resources , optimizing residents’ consumption structure and health concepts, encouraging agricultural technology innovation and equipment development, and innovating new business entities. Major projects regarding technology innovation, quality improvement, ecological protection, and protein substitution are also proposed. Furthermore, we suggest adhering to the overall strategy of “ensuring basic selfsufficiency of grain and absolute security of staple food”, clarifying the industry development priorities by regions, improving the agricultural infrastructure and technology shortcomings, and perfecting the strategic system for responding to major crises, thereby enhancing the level of agricultural development and effectively ensuring food security in China.

5. The impact of income quality on the diet quality of farming households:Empirical analysis based on a survey in Shaanxi Province

Abstract

[Objective] In the context of the diminishing marginal effect of income quantity on diet quality, exploring the effect of income quality on the diet quality of farming households helps to address the bottleneck issue in the effect of income quality on diet quality improvement and provides a basis for the formulation of diet quality improvement measures. [Methods] Using the survey data of 510 farming households in Shaanxi Province in 2022, this study first measured the income quality of farming households by using the entropy value method from five dimensions: income quantity, structure, stability, cost involved, and contribution of knowledge. Second, the diet quality of farming households was evaluated by examining the deviation of actual food intake from recommended intake. On this basis, the impact of income quality on the diet quality of farming households and its heterogeneity were analyzed empirically. [Results] The improvement of income quality significantly improved the diet quality of farming households, reduced the deviation of cereals and potatoes, eggs, aquatic products, legumes, and nuts intake from the recommended intake of dietary pagoda, optimized the dietary structure, and significantly improved the diet quality of farming households, and the effect of income quality on the diet quality of low-income farming households was more obvious. [Conclusion] Enhancing the income quality of farming households is an important way to break through the bottleneck of improving the diet quality. It is recommended to improve the income quality of farming households by increasing income sources, strengthening skills training, promoting agricultural insurance and improving the medical insurance system, so as to improve the diet quality of farming households. And in the process of policy formulation, it is necessary to favor low-income groups and establish a more diversified food supply system.

Currently, China’s food system faces multiple challenges such as the coexistence of overnutrition and nutritional deficiency, contradiction between supply assurance and carbon reduction, lack of tolerance for small-scale farmers and vulnerable groups of consumers, and weak resilience in production stability and supply controllability. Against the background of a declining population and an increasing urbanization rate, the structure of China’s food system needs to be further optimized and develops toward “nutrition and health, green and low carbon, inclusiveness and sharing, and safety and resilience”. Future efforts should focus on (1) adjusting the production system to enrich food supply, (2) strengthening scientific and technological innovation by prioritizing the development of win-win technologies, (3) improving relevant policies to increase investment in the transformation, (4) optimizing existing systems and mechanisms to build an efficient and inclusive food chain, and (5) promoting low-carbon consumption concepts and behaviors. Furthermore, we propose the following suggestions: (1) initiating nutrition-related legislation at the national level, (2) establishing a national reserve for food system transformation technologies, (3) launching a national science and technology project for food system transformation and upgrading, and (4) launching a national nutrition and health campaign.

25. Impacts of Habit Formation Effect on Food Consumption and Nutrient Intake in Rural China.

Abstract

This study employs panel data and a dynamic Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) model to investigate the habit formation effect of food consumption among Chinese rural residents and its consequential impact on nutritional intake. The dataset, spanning from 2012 to 2018, encompasses nine provinces in China and involves 5390 rural households. The findings reveal that, excluding beef, mutton, and poultry, there are significant habit formation effect on the consumption of food categories, notably grains, vegetables, and edible oils. Lower-income and younger demographics demonstrate a more pronounced reliance on established dietary habits. Influenced by the habit formation effect, there is a substantial reduction in the income elasticity differences across various food types. Overlooking the habit formation effect in food consumption would lead to an underestimation of the income elasticity of energy, fat, and carbohydrates. This suggests that, over the long term, food consumption habit formation is a pivotal factor in enabling the enhancement of residents' dietary structures, amplifying the incremental energy intake associated with income increases, and accelerating the transition towards nutritional surplus. The conclusions drawn from this study offer valuable insights for ensuring food security and nutritional balance. Policy-makers of food and nutrition strategies should duly consider the habit formation effect on residents' food consumption, and seek to optimize dietary patterns and promote nutritional transformation by food consumption habit intervention. Abstract

Scaling service operations is an effective way to promote modernization among small farmers. Exploring the factors influencing grain farmers' choices in selecting services is essential to promote the strong development of the agricultural production service market and improve the efficiency of agricultural operations in China. Based on the 2019 data on corn farmers in the China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS) database, and using the Double-Hurdle Model, the factors influencing the service selection behavior of corn farmers are explored, and the research conclusions are as follows: (1) agricultural service prices have a negative impact on the demand for agricultural services, which varies from service to service; (2) labor prices do not influence the demand for any kind of service; (3) land circulation rents have a negative impact on the demand for agricultural services, which varies from service to service; (4) a high family net income can significantly prompt the adoption of agricultural services, which varies from service to service; (5) small-scale farmers are more sensitive to changes in service prices than large-scale farmers; (6) the four economic factors have no effect on the sowing service market. Based on the above conclusions, this paper puts forward suggestions such as improving the market price mechanism for agricultural production services, and increasing subsidies related to agricultural production services. Abstract

One-dimensional hollow Co3O4 tubules have been synthesized by using a template method followed by a simple thermal annealing treatment. The obtained hollow Co3O4 nanomaterial displays one-dimensional architecture with a highly mesoporous nature and hollow interiors, leading to better electrolyte/electrode contact and more efficient transport pathways. Our experimental results demonstrate that the hollow Co3O4 nanostructures exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance for charge storage and enzymeless glucose sensing applications. Supercapacitor electrodes employing mesoporous hollow Co3O4 tubules exhibit specific capacitance of 326 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, a high capacity retention of 73.6% at 10 A g−1, and a long stable cycling performance of retaining ~ 91.6% after 5000 cycles. Compared with the bulk Co3O4, it also has good sensing ability for glucose with high sensitivity of 994.6 μA mM−1 cm−2 and 369.7 μA mM−1 cm−2 for the lower and higher concentration of glucose, fast response time of 5 s, detection limit as low as 0.84 μM, good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. These results show that the hollow Co3O4 tubules is a versatile material for various applications.

Abstract

The new multi-functional heat preservation cup can not only achieve long-term heat preservation, but also keep the water temperature at a more suitable temperature for drinking in a short time. It uses paraffin phase change heat storage material as the filler of the inner liner sandwich, which can absorb the heat in the water temperature and achieve rapid cooling; solar panels are used above the cup cover to supply power for electronic devices, which can save energy and protect the environment and avoid the trouble of charging back and forth; At the same time, a variety of electronic devices are added to the cup cover to enrich the customer's experience.

Abstract

The use of wastewater for rearing domestic animals is a common phenomenon in most of the developing countries like Pakistan that face a serious shortage of freshwater resources. However, most of the literature has only focused on the indirect effects of wastewater use on animal health or productivity, and literature on the direct effects of wastewater use is rare. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the direct and indirect effects of wastewater usage on the prevalence of animal diseases and animal health in Pakistan. The study is based on a household-level survey of 360 domestic water buffalo herds collected from 12 districts of Punjab Province, Pakistan. We tested the prevalence of the animal's diseases, animal's health, and wastewater-use preference with various econometric tools, such as the Poisson, negative binomial, and logistic regressions. The findings of the study show that the majority of the farmers use wastewater for buffalo bathing due to the shortage of freshwater resources. Results explore the prevalence of diseases such as clinical mastitis, tick infestation, and foot and mouth disease at the farm level significantly associated with buffalo bathing in the wastewater. Moreover, bathing in wastewater pre- and post-milking also plays a role in the occurrence of diseases. Particularly, if the buffalo's access to wastewater for bathing is within 60 min after milking, the probability of the animals being exposed to mastitis is higher. Furthermore, on investigation, a number of factors are found, such as the distance to the water source, power shortage, groundwater availability, and the education of farmers that influence farmers' behavior of letting their animals take a bath in wastewater. Moreover, the use of different preventive measures improves the animal's health.

Abstract

Electrode materials play a vital role for supercapacitors. The development of an efficient and reproducible strategy for the fabrication of hollow mesoporous materials with specific morphologies and microstructures has attracted considerable research interest in recent years. Herein, NiCo2Se4 with a mesoporous surface and one-dimensional tubular hollow structure is synthesized using carbon nanofibers as the template for use as the positive electrode material in asymmetric supercapacitors. Because of the bimetallic selenide component and the unique structure, mesoporous NiCo2Se4 tubes demonstrate exceptional energy-storage performance. When evaluated as an electrode material for supercapacitors, these mesoporous NiCo2Se4 tubes show a specific capacitance of 209.1 mA h g−1 (1762.1 F g−1) at a current density of 1 A g−1, with a retention of 82% after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g−1. Even when the current density increased to 20 A g−1, 61% is still retained. Asymmetric supercapacitors are assembled by mesoporous NiCo2Se4 tubes and active carbon shows a high energy density of 24.03 W h kg−1 at a power density of 1.055 kW kg−1 as well as long-term cycle stability (94% retention of the initial specific capacitance after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g−1). 50. One-dimensional mesoporous Co3O4 tubules for enhanced performance supercapacitor and enzymeless glucose sensing.

Abstract

One-dimensional hollow Co3O4 tubules have been synthesized by using a template method followed by a simple thermal annealing treatment. The obtained hollow Co3O4 nanomaterial displays one-dimensional architecture with a highly mesoporous nature and hollow interiors, leading to better electrolyte/electrode contact and more efficient transport pathways. Our experimental results demonstrate that the hollow Co3O4 nanostructures exhibit enhanced electrochemical performance for charge storage and enzymeless glucose sensing applications. Supercapacitor electrodes employing mesoporous hollow Co3O4 tubules exhibit specific capacitance of 326 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1, a high capacity retention of 73.6% at 10 A g−1, and a long stable cycling performance of retaining ~ 91.6% after 5000 cycles. Compared with the bulk Co3O4, it also has good sensing ability for glucose with high sensitivity of 994.6 μA mM−1 cm−2 and 369.7 μA mM−1 cm−2 for the lower and higher concentration of glucose, fast response time of 5 s, detection limit as low as 0.84 μM, good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility.
