A unique event known as the disappearing solar wind (DSW), characterized by an extremely low-density solar wind stream, occurred at Mars on 2022 December 26–27. As this stream flowed past Mars, several properties of the Mars–solar wind interaction changed in response to the density drop. We utilize in situ plasma measurements from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft to examine heavy ion escape during this event. We find that escaping ions with energies above and below 30 eV responded differently to the reduction in solar wind density. High-energy ions experienced a decrease in flux, whereas low-energy ions experienced an increase, regardless of whether they were escaping through the plume or tailward channel. Furthermore, we observe a net reduction in the flux of plume escaping ions during the DSW period, primarily due to a considerable reduction in the high-energy component, which typically dominates plume escape. In contrast, the overall flux of tailward escaping ions increased during this period. These variations in heavy ion escape are mainly attributed to substantial reductions in solar wind dynamic pressure and momentum density. This paper provides new insights into the dynamics of heavy ion escape under an exceptional state of the Mars–solar wind interaction.

The Moon is enveloped in an exosphere, which is comprised of a variety of neutral atoms and molecules. Once exospheric neutrals are ionized by photons, protons, or electrons from the Sun, the resulting ions are accelerated by the electromagnetic fields of their surroundings and can thereby travel away from their source locations. These ions are the so-called pickup ions and are frequently observed by the two Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of Moon’s Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) spacecraft. In this study, we identify 115 events from an 11 yr period of ARTEMIS observations, which contain a total of 11,987 samples for our statistics. By using analytical ion trajectory calculations, we trace the source location of each pickup ion observation. Most pickup ion trajectories originate near the subsolar point, consistent with the efficiency of sputtering. We find that the flux of pickup ions strongly anticorrelates with the source altitude, providing indirect evidence of decreasing exospheric ion flux with increasing altitude. We also find that the flux of pickup ions does not show a significant relationship with the crustal magnetic field intensity. This implies that a depression of sputtering efficiency or the trapping of near-surface freshly born ions by a crustal magnetic anomaly may not reduce the subsequent pickup ion flux as effectively as expected. In summary, the present paper provides a statistical view of lunar pickup ion fluxes in association with the altitude, local time, and local crustal magnetic field of their source locations.

Abstract The variable electromagnetic environment in geospace plays a crucial role in influencing the occurrence probability of satellite anomalies. FORMOSAT-3 (FS3) is a Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) mission, which consists of six identical microsatellites that orbit in the altitude of 700–800 km and with an inclination of 72°. The dependences of the FS3 satellite anomalies on space weather conditions have not been investigated in the past. With an exception of a small number of extremely high geomagnetic events, we find that the occurrence rate of the FS3 anomalies is negatively correlated with the level of geomagnetic activity. Moreover, the relationship between numbers of anomalies and sunspots is also anti-correlated. A superposed epoch analysis demonstrates that the intensity of galactic cosmic rays (GCR) is relatively high at the times of the anomalies. All these results infer that the FS3 anomalies predominantly occurred under the conditions associated with low solar activity. The possible main cause for the FS3 anomalies is high-energy trapped protons or GCR. In summary, this paper presents a statistical result that a satellite can be prone to suffer an anomaly under low solar or geomagnetic activity.

The Moon of our Earth has a tenuous atmosphere, known as an exosphere. The ionization of this exosphere is speculated to possibly form a weak ionosphere. Some radio occultation (RO) experiments have suggested the presence of a dense ionosphere with an electron density on the order of hundreds of cm ^−3 near the surface. Using in situ measurements from the ARTEMIS mission during 2012–2021, we conduct statistical analyses and case studies to investigate the plasma density at near-surface altitudes. ARTEMIS measurements reveal no plasma densities at altitudes between 10 and 50 km that exceed 35 cm ^−3 , and therefore they provide no evidence for a steady-state or global lunar ionosphere at the level suggested by some RO observations. Density profiles with local time and altitude show higher density in the sunlit sector than in the shadowed sector. These observations suggest that the natural variation of solar wind plasma flux with solar zenith angle plays a critical role in controlling the plasma population near the surface. This research provides a reference for a comparison with RO observations and a statistical view of the low-altitude plasma environment near the lunar surface.

Magnetic field intensity increases when solar wind compresses a planet’s magnetosphere. The compression can be measured using the ratio of compressed magnetic fields to purely dipolar magnetic fields just inside the magnetopause. For Earth, the ratio is proportional to the subsolar standoff distance of the magnetopause. Data from in-orbit observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft indicate an opposite ratio for Mercury; the compression ratio is inversely proportional to the subsolar standoff distance. The additional magnetic fields induced by currents at the top of Mercury’s core enhance the total magnetic field strength. We also evaluated differences in the subsolar standoff of Mercury’s magnetopause according to the north–south polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Previous studies have not identified meaningful differences in subsolar standoff distance between those in northward versus southward IMF polarities for Mercury; however, we found that the difference is statistically significant at a large IMF B _Z (15–20 nT). The magnetic reconnection that occurs behind the cusp for a large northward IMF transfers the magnetic flux to the dayside and increases the subsolar standoff distance. The eroded magnetic flux for a large southward IMF is compensated by the induced magnetic fields.

This study examines the spatial distributions of precipitation during active and quiet times. Most previous studies commonly classified precipitation into different energy spectral types, but we utilized a classification according to particle energy channels. A general conclusion derived from these distributions suggests that regardless of active and quiet times, low-energy (<1 keV) and high-energy precipitating particles are mostly on the dayside and nightside, respectively. A comparison with past results reveals that the high-energy electron precipitation during quiet times is mostly due to wave scattering and that during active times is mainly produced by quasi-static potential structures (QSPS) and Alfvénic acceleration, while low-energy electron precipitation is mostly caused by QSPS and Alfvénic acceleration regardless of quiet and active times. For both high-energy proton and electron precipitation, the nightside dawn-dusk asymmetry of their distributions during active times is found to be opposite of that during quiet times. We infer that the distribution of high-energy precipitation during quiet times is dominated by the curvature and gradient drifts, while during active times it is mainly due to the physical processes or phenomena related to substorms in the magnetotail. Empirical orthogonal function analysis has been applied in this study to derive where the flux has the maximum enhancement as the geomagnetic activity increases. The results further demonstrate that low-energy and high-energy protons mainly increase in the noon and postmidnight sectors, respectively. The highest enhancements of low-energy and high-energy electrons are in the prenoon and premidnight sectors, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
