Access to information via handheld devices supports decision making away from one's computer. However, limitations include small screens and constrained wireless bandwidth. We present a summarization method that transforms online content for delivery to small devices. Unlike previous algorithms, ours assumes nothing about document formatting, and induces a hierarchical structure based on the relative importance of sentences within the document. As compared to delivering full documents, the method reduces the bytes transferred by half. An experiment also demonstrates that when given hierarchical summaries, users are no less accurate in answering questions about the documents. This paper proposes a new web-page search mechanism suitable for mobile devices, called an adaptive hypermedia search. It utilizes hierarchical structure of hypermedia objects for handheld devices, such as cellular phones and PDAs, which have usually limited resources. We developed a tree-filtering algorithm and a Top_K_algorithm that can be used to provide search recommendations for mobile devices. In the experimental section, we implement our system in Windows Mobile 5.0 SDK environment and show that our method can save mobile resource in terms of web-page search time. Also, we show the resource savings according to different wireless technologies such as WiBro, HSDPA, and Wi-Fi. In this paper we introduce our experiences in accessing Web Services (WSs) from DVB-H terminals. Because of the reduced capabilities of the mobile devices, clients residing in these terminals should be as simple as possible. So, we propose to move their complexity to the service provider by defining Virtual WSs. A Virtual WS groups one or more WSs sharing a conceptual functionality, although they could be implemented in different locations and with different characteristics. Because of the WSs virtualization, the provider makes the mobile client independent of these implementation details as well as of their availability. Virtualization also gives the possibility of defining QoS-aware services as well as caching-based systems to process the responses of clients more efficiently. Finally, we propose how to broadcast the simple clients and the information needed to access the Virtual WS by using the technology provided by the D VB-H network. Delivering streaming video over wireless is an important component of many interactive multimedia applications running on personal wireless handheld devices. Such personal devices have to be inexpensive, compact, and lightweight. Wireless channels have a high channel bit error rate and limited bandwidth. Delay variation of packets due to network congestion and the high bit error rate degrades the quality of video at the handheld device. Multimedia application use a buffer at the handheld device smooth out the delay variation and improve the quality of streaming video. However, the buffer size has to be kept small in order to reduce the size, weight and power consumption of handheld devices. In this paper, we propose a novel selective retransmission scheme for multimedia transmission over wireless networks. Our scheme is based on retransmission of only the most important information in a video in order to achieve a high quality of video. Our objective is to develop a simple cost effective scheme which offers an acceptable video quality over a noisy wireless channel using a small buffer size at the handheld device. We have developed an analytical model to determine the networking requirements, video quality as a function of video compression parameters and network error conditions, and optimally dimension the buffer at the handheld device.
