We use three different techniques to identify hundreds of white dwarf (WD) candidates in the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) based on photometry from the NGVS and GUViCS, and proper motions derived from the NGVS and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Photometric distances for these candidates are calculated using theoretical color-absolute magnitude relations while effective temperatures are measured by fitting their spectral energy distributions. Disk and halo WD candidates are separated using a tangential velocity cut of 200 km~s$^{-1}$ in a reduced proper motion diagram, which leads to a sample of six halo WD candidates. Cooling ages, calculated for an assumed WD mass of 0.6$M_{\odot}$, range between 60 Myr and 6 Gyr, although these estimates depend sensitively on the adopted mass. Luminosity functions for the disk and halo subsamples are constructed and compared to previous results from the SDSS and SuperCOSMOS survey. We compute a number density of (2.81 $\pm$ 0.52) $\times 10^{-3}$~pc$^{-3}$ for the disk WD population--- consistent with previous measurements. We find (7.85 $\pm$ 4.55) $\times 10^{-6}$~pc$^{-3}$ for the halo, or 0.3\% of the disk. Observed stellar counts are also compared to predictions made by the TRILEGAL and Besan\c{c}on stellar population synthesis models. The comparison suggests that the TRILEGAL model overpredicts the total number of WDs. The WD counts predicted by the Besan\c{c}on model agree with the observations, although a discrepancy arises when comparing the predicted and observed halo WD populations; the difference is likely due to the WD masses in the adopted model halo., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 17 pages, 17 figures

We present our analysis of HD~35502 based on high- and medium-resolution spectropolarimetric observations. Our results indicate that the magnetic B5IVsnp star is the primary component of a spectroscopic triple system and that it has an effective temperature of $18.4\pm0.6\,{\rm kK}$, a mass of $5.7\pm0.6\,M_\odot$, and a polar radius of $3.0^{+1.1}_{-0.5}\,R_\odot$. The two secondary components are found to be essentially identical A-type stars for which we derive effective temperatures ($8.9\pm0.3\,{\rm kK}$), masses ($2.1\pm0.2\,M_\odot$), and radii ($2.1\pm0.4\,R_\odot$). We infer a hierarchical orbital configuration for the system in which the secondary components form a tight binary with an orbital period of $5.66866(6)\,{\rm d}$ that orbits the primary component with a period of over $40\,{\rm yrs}$. Least-Squares Deconvolution (LSD) profiles reveal Zeeman signatures in Stokes $V$ indicative of a longitudinal magnetic field produced by the B star ranging from approximately $-4$ to $0\,{\rm kG}$ with a median uncertainty of $0.4\,{\rm kG}$. These measurements, along with the line variability produced by strong emission in H$\alpha$, are used to derive a rotational period of $0.853807(3)\,{\rm d}$. We find that the measured $v\sin{i}=75\pm5\,{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$ of the B star then implies an inclination angle of the star's rotation axis to the line of sight of $24^{+6}_{-10}\degree$. Assuming the Oblique Rotator Model, we derive the magnetic field strength of the B star's dipolar component ($14^{+9}_{-3}\,{\rm kG}$) and its obliquity ($63\pm13\degree$). Furthermore, we demonstrate that the calculated Alfv\'{e}n radius ($41^{+17}_{-6}\,R_\ast$) and Kepler radius ($2.1^{+0.4}_{-0.7}\,R_\ast$) place HD~35502's central B star well within the regime of centrifugal magnetosphere-hosting stars., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new wide-field photometry and spectroscopy of the globular clusters (GCs) around NGC 4649 (M60), the third brightest galaxy in the Virgo cluster. Imaging of NGC 4649 was assembled from a recently-obtained HST/ACS mosaic, and new Subaru/Suprime-Cam and archival CFHT/MegaCam data. About 1200 sources were followed up spectroscopically using combined observations from three multi-object spectrographs: Keck/DEIMOS, Gemini/GMOS and MMT/Hectospec. We confirm 431 unique GCs belonging to NGC 4649, a factor of 3.5 larger than previous datasets and with a factor of 3 improvement in velocity precision. We confirm significant GC colour bimodality and find that the red GCs are more centrally concentrated, while the blue GCs are more spatially extended. We infer negative GC colour gradients in the innermost 20 kpc and flat gradients out to large radii. Rotation is detected along the galaxy major axis for all tracers: blue GCs, red GCs, galaxy stars and planetary nebulae. We compare the observed properties of NGC 4649 with galaxy formation models. We find that formation via a major merger between two gas-poor galaxies, followed by satellite accretion, can consistently reproduce the observations of NGC 4649 at different radii. We find no strong evidence to support an interaction between NGC 4649 and the neighbouring spiral galaxy NGC 4647. We identify interesting GC kinematic features in our data, such as counter-rotating subgroups and bumpy kinematic profiles, which encode more clues about the formation history of NGC 4649., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This paper presents further results from our spectroscopic study of the globular cluster (GC) system of the group elliptical NGC 3923. From observations made with the GMOS instrument on the Gemini South telescope, an additional 50 GC and Ultra Compact Dwarf (UCD) candidates have been spectroscopically confirmed as members of the NGC 3923 system. When the recessional velocities of these GCs are combined with the 29 GC velocities reported previously, a total sample of 79 GC/UCD velocities is produced. This sample extends to over 6 arcmin (>6 Re \sim30 kpc) from the centre of NGC 3923, and is used to study the dynamics of the GC system and the dark matter content of NGC 3923. It is found that the GC system of NGC 3923 displays no appreciable rotation, and that the projected velocity dispersion is constant with radius within the uncertainties. The velocity dispersion profiles of the integrated light and GC system of NGC 3923 are indistinguishable over the region in which they overlap. We find some evidence that the diffuse light and GCs of NGC 3923 have radially biased orbits within \sim130". The application of axisymmetric orbit-based models to the GC and integrated light velocity dispersion profiles demonstrates that a significant increase in the mass-to-light ratio (from M/Lv = 8 to 26) at large galactocentric radii is required to explain these observations. We therefore confirm the presence of a dark matter halo in NGC 3923. We find that dark matter comprises 17.5% of the mass within 1 Re, 41.2% within 2 Re, and 75.6% within the radius of our last kinematic tracer at 6.9 Re. The total dynamical mass within this radius is found to be 1.5 x 10^12 solar masses. Recently announced magnetic models for four SPB and {\beta} Cep stars, along with magnetic detections for two additional stars, have potentially doubled the number of known magnetic SPB and \beta Cep stars (see Grunhut et al., these proceedings). We have reanalyzed the published data and re-reduced archival low resolution spectropolarimetry collected with the FORS1/2 instruments at VLT on which the models were based, and compare them with high resolution data from the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at CFHT, investigating previously noted inconsistencies between results from the two instruments., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, StarPol: Stellar Polarimetry from Birth to Death

This paper presents deep high quality photometry of globular cluster (GC) systems belonging to five early-type galaxies covering a range of mass and environment. Photometric data were obtained with the Gemini North and Gemini South telescopes in the filter passbands g', r', and i'. The combination of these filters with good seeing conditions allows an excellent separation between GC candidates and unresolved field objects. Bimodal GC colour distributions are found in all five galaxies. Most of the GC systems appear bimodal even in the (g' -r') vs (r' -i') plane. A population of resolved/marginally resolved GC and Ultra Compact Dwarf candidates was found in all the galaxies. A search for the so-called "blue tilt" in the colour-magnitude diagrams reveals that NGC 4649 clearly shows that phenomenon although no conclusive evidence was found for the other galaxies in the sample. This "blue tilt" translates into a mass-metallicity relation given by Z \propto M^0.28\pm0.03 . This dependence was found using a new empirical (g' -i') vs [Z/H] relation which relies on an homogeneous sample of GC colours and metallicities. This paper also explores the radial trends in both colour and surface density for the blue (metal-poor) and red (metal-rich) GC subpopulations. As usual, the red GCs show a steeper radial distribution than the blue ones. Evidence of galactocentric colour gradients is found in some of the GC systems, being more significant for the two S0 galaxies in the sample. Red GC subpopulations show similar colours and gradients to the galaxy halo stars in their inner region. A GC mean colour-galaxy luminosity relation, consistent with [Z/H] \propto L_B ^0.26\pm0.08, is present for the red GCs. We report the systematic detection of magnetic fields in massive (M > 5 M$_\odot$) late-type supergiants, using spectropolarimetric observations obtained with ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Our observations reveal detectable Stokes V Zeeman signatures in Least-Squares Deconvolved mean line profiles in one-third of the observed sample of more than 30 stars. The signatures are sometimes complex, revealing multiple reversals across the line. The corresponding longitudinal magnetic field is seldom detected, although our longitudinal field error bars are typically 0.3 G ($1\sigma$). These characteristics suggest topologically complex magnetic fields, presumably generated by dynamo action. The Stokes V signatures of some targets show clear time variability, indicating either rotational modulation or intrinsic evolution of the magnetic field. We also observe a weak correlation between the unsigned longitudinal magnetic field and the CaII K core emission equivalent width of the active G2Iab supergiant $\beta$~Dra and the G8Ib supergiant $\epsilon$~Gem., Comment: 8 pages, 1 table, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a technique to extract ultra-deep diffuse-light spectra from the standard multi-object spectroscopic observations used to investigate extragalactic globular cluster (GC) systems. This technique allows a clean extraction of the spectrum of the host galaxy diffuse light from the same slitlets as the GC targets. We show the utility of the method for investigating the kinematics and stellar populations of galaxies at radii much greater than usually probed in longslit studies, at no additional expense in terms of telescope time. To demonstrate this technique we present Gemini/GMOS spectroscopy of 29 GCs associated with the elliptical galaxy NGC 3923. We compare the measured stellar population parameters of the GC system with those of the spheroid of NGC 3923 at the same projected radii, and find the GCs to have old ages (> 10 Gyr), [alpha/Fe]~0.3 and a range of metallicities running from [Z/H] = -1.8 to +0.35. The diffuse light of the galaxy is found to have ages, metallicities and [alpha/Fe] abundance ratios indistinguishable from those of the red GCs., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

NGC 4649 (M60) is one of a handful of giant Virgo ellipticals. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 38 GCs associated with this galaxy. Applying the multi-index chi^2 minimisation technique of Proctor & Sansom (2002) with the single stellar population models of Thomas, Maraston & Korn (2004) we derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios. We find several young (2--3 Gyr old) super-solar metallicity GCs, while the majority are old (>10 Gyrs), spanning a range of metallicities from solar to [Z/H]=-2. At least two of these young GCs are at large projected radii of 17-20 kpc. The galaxy itself shows no obvious signs of a recent starburst, interaction or merger. We have obtained Gemini/GMOS spectra for 22 GCs associated with NGC 3379. We derive ages, metallicities and alpha-element abundance ratios from simple stellar population models using the multi-index chi^2 minimisation method of Proctor & Sansom (2002). All of these GCs are found to be consistent with old ages, i.e. >10 Gyr, with a wide range of metallicities. A trend of decreasing alpha-element abundance ratio with increasing metallicity is indicated. The projected velocity dispersion of the GC system is consistent with being constant with radius. Non-parametric, isotropic models require a significant increase in the mass-to-light ratio at large radii. This result is in contrast to that of Romanowsky et al. (2003) who find a decrease in the velocity dispersion profile as determined from planetary nebulae. Our constant dispersion requires a normal sized dark halo, although without anisotropic models we cannot rigorously determine the dark halo mass. A two-sided chi^2 test over all radii, gives a 2 sigma difference between the mass profile derived from our GCs compared to the PN-derived mass model of Romanowsky et al. (2003). However, if we restrict our analysis to radii beyond one effective radius and test if the GC velocity dispersion is consistently higher, we determine a >3 sigma difference between the mass models, and hence favor the conclusion that NGC 3379 does indeed have dark matter at large radii in its halo. We present Sloan g and i imaging from the GMOS instrument on the Gemini North telescope for the globular cluster (GC) system around the Virgo galaxy NGC 4649 (M60). Our three pointings, taken in good seeing conditions, cover an area of about 90 sq. arcmins. We detect 2,151 unresolved sources. Applying colour and magnitude selection criteria to this source list gives 995 candidate GCs that is greater than 90% complete to a magnitude of i = 23.6, with little contamination from background galaxies. We find fewer than half a dozen potential Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies around NGC 4649. Foreground extinction from the nearby spiral NGC 4647 is limited to be A_V < 0.1. We confirm the bimodality in the GC colour distribution found by earlier work using HST/WFPC2 imaging. As is commonly seen in other galaxies, the red GCs are concentrated towards the centre of the galaxy, having a steeper number density profile than the blue GC subpopulation. The varying ratio of red-to-blue GCs with radius can largely explain the overall GC system colour gradient. The underlying galaxy starlight has a similar density profile slope and colour to the red GCs. This suggests a direct connection between the galaxy field stars and the red GC subpopulation. We estimate a total GC population of 3700 +/- 900, with the uncertainty dominated by the extrapolation to larger radii than observed. This total number corresponds to a specific frequency S_N = 4.1 +/- 1.0. We present a comprehensive database of kinematic, photometric and positional information for 352 objects in the field of M87 (NGC 4486), the central giant elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster; the majority of the objects are globular clusters associated with that galaxy. New kinematic information comes from multi-slit observations with the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, an investigation which has added 96 new velocities to and confirmed many of the earlier values in a pre-existing dataset of 256 velocities published elsewhere. The photometry, consisting of magnitudes and colors in the Washington T1, C-T1 system, is based on CCD observations made at CTIO and KPNO. The composite database represents the largest compilation of pure Population II dynamical tracers yet identified in any external galaxy; moreover, it extends to larger spatial scales than have earlier investigations. The inclusion of photometric information allows independent study of the distinct red and blue sub-populations of the bimodal GCS of M87. We present a dynamical analysis of the globular cluster system associated with M87 (= NGC 4486), the cD galaxy near the dynamical center of the Virgo cluster. The analysis utilizes a new spectroscopic and photometric database which is described in a companion paper (Hanes et al. 2001). Using a sample of 278 globular clusters with measured radial velocities and metallicities, and new surface density profiles based on wide-field Washington photometry, we study the dynamics of the M87 globular cluster system both globally --- for the entire cluster sample --- and separately --- for the metal-rich and metal-poor globular cluster samples. This constitutes the largest sample of radial velocities for pure Population II tracers yet assembled for any galaxy. We discuss the implications of our findings for models for the formation of giant elliptical galaxies, globular cluster systems, and the Virgo cluster. We present new radial velocities for 87 globular clusters around the elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, and combine these with our previously published data to create a data set of velocities for 144 globular clusters around NGC 4472. We utilize this data set to analyze the kinematics of the NGC 4472 globular cluster system. The new data confirms our previous discovery that the metal-poor clusters have significantly higher velocity dispersion than the metal-rich clusters in NGC 4472. We also find very little or no rotation in the more spatially concentrated metal-rich population, with a resulting upper limit for this population of (v/sigma)_{proj} < 0.34 at a 99% confidence level. The very small angular momentum in the metal-rich population requires efficient angular momentum transport during the formation of this population which is spatially concentrated and chemically enriched. Such angular momentum transfer can be provided by galaxy mergers, but has not been achieved in other extant models of elliptical galaxy formation that include dark matter halos. We also calculate the velocity dispersion as a function of radius, and show that it is consistent with roughly isotropic orbits for the clusters and the mass distribution of NGC 4472 inferred from X-ray observations of the hot gas around the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal, 27 pages, 4 figures

We report the discovery of a probable CH star in the core of the Galactic globular cluster M14, identified from an integrated-light spectrum of the cluster obtained with the MOS spectrograph on the CFHT. From a high- resolution echelle spectrum of the same star obtained with the Hydra fiber positioner and bench spectrograph on the WIYN telescope, we measure a radial velocity of $-53.0\pm1.2$ km s$^{-1}$. Although this velocity is inconsistent with published estimates of the systemic radial velocity of M14 (eg, ${\bar {v_r}} \approx -123$ km s$^{-1}$), we use high-precision Hydra velocities for 20 stars in the central 2.6 arcminutes of M14 to calculate improved values for the cluster mean velocity and one-dimensional velocity dispersion: $-59.5\pm1.9$ km s$^{-1}$ and $8.2\pm1.4$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Both the star's location near the tip of the red giant branch in the cluster color magnitude diagram and its radial velocity therefore argue for membership in M14. Since the intermediate-resolution MOS spectrum shows not only enhanced CH absorption but also strong Swan bands of C$_2$, M14 joins Omega Cen as the only globular clusters known to contain classical CH stars. Although evidence for its duplicity must await additional radial velocity measurements, the CH star in M14 is probably, like all field CH stars, a spectroscopic binary with a degenerate (white dwarf) secondary. The candidate and confirmed CH stars in M14 and Omega Cen, and in a number of Galactic dSph galaxies, may then owe their existence to the long timescales for the shrinking and coalescence of hard binaries in low-concentration environments., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Letters. 13 pages, AAS LaTeX and three postscript figures (numbers 2,3,4). We present the results of a $BVI$ photometric study of the globular cluster NGC 6517 using CCD images obtained at the prime focus of the CFHT. From the resultant color-magnitude diagram, we infer that the cluster is differentially reddened and develop a method for determining the amplitude of this effect, which amounts to \( \sim 0.4 \) mag in \( (V-I) \) across our $\sim 4$ arc-min field. From the corrected $V_0,$ $(V-I)_0$ color-magnitude diagram, we derive the metallicity and distance modulus of the cluster. Our values for the mean foreground reddening ($E(B-V) = 1.10 \pm 0.10$) and metallicity (\feh\ = -1.58 $\pm$ 0.05) agree to within uncertainties with previous determinations. Our apparent distance modulus of 18.3 $\pm$ 0.2, however, is larger than the sole previous determination. When the distance modulus is corrected for absorption, assuming that $R_V = 3.8 $ for this line of sight, we find that NGC 6517 is within 3 kpc of the Galactic center, making it a bulge member. This makes NGC 6517 only the fourth metal poor cluster in the bulge for which an accurate CMD is available., Comment: Submitted as a uuencoded gziped tar file containing tex document and macros.
