Abstract Background Patients with airway stenosis (AS) are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation (LTx). This study aims to develop and validate machine learning (ML) models to predict AS requiring clinical intervention in patients after LTx. Methods Patients who underwent LTx between January 2017 and December 2019 were reviewed. The conventional logistic regression (LR) model was fitted by the independent risk factors which were determined by multivariate LR. The optimal ML model was determined based on 7 feature selection methods and 8 ML algorithms. Model performance was assessed by the area under the curve (AUC) and brier score, which were internally validated by the bootstrap method. Abstract The surge in interest regarding the next generation of optical fiber transmission has stimulated the development of digital signal processing (DSP) schemes that are highly cost-effective with both high performance and low complexity. As benchmarks for nonlinear compensation methods, however, traditional DSP designed with block-by-block modules for linear compensations, could exhibit residual linear effects after compensation, limiting the nonlinear compensation performance. Here we propose a high-efficient design thought for DSP based on the learnable perspectivity, called learnable DSP (LDSP). LDSP reuses the traditional DSP modules, regarding the whole DSP as a deep learning framework and optimizing the DSP parameters adaptively based on backpropagation algorithm from a global scale. This method not only establishes new standards in linear DSP performance but also serves as a critical benchmark for nonlinear DSP designs. In comparison to traditional DSP with hyperparameter optimization, a notable enhancement of approximately 1.21 dB in the Q factor for 400 Gb/s signal after 1600 km fiber transmission is experimentally demonstrated by combining LDSP and perturbation-based nonlinear compensation algorithm. Benefiting from the learnable model, LDSP can learn the best configuration adaptively with low complexity, reducing dependence on initial parameters. The proposed approach implements a symbol-rate DSP with a small bit error rate (BER) cost in exchange for a 48% complexity reduction compared to the conventional 2 samples/symbol processing. We believe that LDSP represents a new and highly efficient paradigm for DSP design, which is poised to attract considerable attention across various domains of optical communications.

Abstract Background To evaluate the hemodynamic characteristics of normal upper extremity arteries from the brachial artery to the fingertip arterioles. Methods We analyzed the characteristics and changes in the regularities of ultrasonic parameters in the upper extremity arteries of 104 healthy volunteers using color Doppler flow imaging and Angio Planewave UltraSensitive™ imaging. The measured ultrasonic parameters included the vessel diameter, blood-flow spectrum waveform, peak systolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity, resistance index, pulsatility index, ratio of PSV to EDV, blood-flow volume, along with systolic acceleration of each BA, radial artery, superficial palmar arch artery, palmar proper digital artery, and third-grade artery arch of the fingernail bed. Abstract Background The outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) produced by Gram-negative bacteria can modulate the immune system and have great potentials for bacterial vaccine development. Results A highly active Acinetobacter baumannii phage lysin, LysP53, can stimulate the production of OMVs after interacting with A. baumannii, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella. The OMVs prepared by the lysin (LOMVs) from A. baumannii showed better homogeneity, higher protein yield, lower endotoxin content, and lower cytotoxicity compared to the naturally produced OMVs (nOMVs). The LOMVs contain a significantly higher number of cytoplasmic and cytoplasmic membrane proteins but a smaller number of periplasmic and extracellular proteins compared to nOMVs. Intramuscular immunization with either LOMVs or nOMVs three times provided robust protection against A. baumannii infections in both pneumonia and bacteremia mouse models. Intranasal immunization offered good protection in the pneumonia model but weaker protection (20–40%) in the bacteremia model. However, with a single immunization, LOMVs demonstrated better protection than the nOMVs in the pneumonia mouse model. Abstract The surfaces of lotus leaves with micro- and nano-waxy cuticle structures are superhydrophobic and possess a self-healing ability to regain hydrophobicity after damage. Inspired by this phenomenon, the problem of water-repellent coatings used in natural environments failing to perform after damage can be solved if these coatings are endowed with rapid self-repair and self-growth functions. However, there has been almost no exploration into the hydrophobicity self-repair process in lotus leaves. The changes in surface morphology during the hydrophobicity recovery process are not understood. There is a lack of research on the hydrophobicity recovery in lotus leaves. In this study, the damage and recovery experiments on lotus leaf surfaces were carried out in an artificial climate chamber, and the water repellency recovery process and typical water repellency roughness parameters regained time were obtained. Upon analyzing the differences in the recovery process of different damage types, the recovery mechanism after lotus leaf surface damage was obtained. Finally, it was found that the microscopic roughness determined the static contact angle (WCA) of the lotus leaf surface, and the nanoscopic roughness determined the rolling angle (SA). The dual factors of the recovery of the extruded epidermal tissue and the regeneration of the epidermal wax crystals determined the hydrophobicity recovery process in damaged lotus leaves.

Abstract Cardioneuroablation (CNA) is currently considered as a promising treatment option for patients with symptomatic bradycardia caused by vagotonia. This study aims to further investigate its safety and efficacy in patients suffering from vagal bradycardia. A total of 60 patients with vagal bradycardia who underwent CNA in the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from November 2019 to June 2022. Preoperative atropine tests revealed abnormal vagal tone elevation in all patients. First, the electroanatomic structures of the left atrium was mapped out by using the Carto 3 system, according to the protocol of purely anatomy-guided and local fractionated intracardiac electrogram-guided CNA methods. The upper limit of ablation power of superior left ganglion (SLGP) and right anterior ganglion (RAGP) was not more than 45W with an ablation index of 450.Postoperative transesophageal cardiac electrophysiological examination was performed 1 to 3 months after surgery. The atropine test was conducted when appropriate. Twelve-lead electrocardiogram, Holter electrocardiogram, and skin sympathetic nerve activity were reviewed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after operation. Adverse events such as pacemaker implantation and other complications were also recorded to analyze the safety and efficacy of CNA in the treatment of vagus bradycardia. Sixty patients were enrolled in the study (38 males, mean age 36.67 ± 9.44, ranging from 18 to 50 years old). None of the patients had a vascular injury, thromboembolism, pericardial effusion, or other surgical complications. The mean heart rate, minimum heart rate, low frequency, low/high frequency, acceleration capacity of rate, and skin sympathetic nerve activity increased significantly after CNA. Conversely, SDNN, PNN50, rMSSD, high frequency, and deceleration capacity of rate values decreased after CNA (all P 0.05). The remaining 81.67% (49/60) of the patients had good clinical results, with no episodes of arrhythmia during follow-up. CNA may be a safe and effective treatment for vagal-induced bradycardia, subject to confirmation by larger multicenter trials.

Abstract Background Despite the higher sensitivity of melanoma towards ferroptosis and photodynamic therapy (PDT), the lack of efficient ferroptosis inducers and the poor solubility of photosensitizers restrict their synergistic strategies. With unique advantages, carbon dots (CDs) are expected to serve as innovative building blocks for combination therapy of cancers. Results Herein, an ferroptosis/PDT integrated nanoplatform for melanoma therapy is constructed based on chlorin e6-modified Fe ions-doped carbon dots (Fe-CDs@Ce6). As a novel type of iron-carbon hybrid nanoparticles, the as-prepared Fe-CDs can selectively activate ferroptosis, prevent angiogenesis and inhibit the migration of mouse skin melanoma cells (B16), but have no toxicity to normal cells. The nano-conjugated structures facilitate not only the aqueous dispersibility of Ce6, but also the self-accumulation ability of Fe-CDs@Ce6 within melanoma area without requiring extra targets. Moreover, the therapeutic effects of Fe-CDs@Ce6 are synergistically enhanced due to the increased GSH depletion by PDT and the elevated singlet oxygen (1O2) production efficiency by Fe-CDs. When combined with laser irradiation, the tumor growth can be significantly suppressed by Fe-CDs@Ce6 through cyclic administration. The T 2 -weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) capability of Fe-CDs@Ce6 also reveals their potentials for cancer diagnosis and navigation therapy. Conclusions Our findings indicate the multifunctionality of Fe-CDs@Ce6 in effectively combining ferroptosis/PDT therapy, tumor targeting and MRI imaging, which enables Fe-CDs@Ce6 to become promising biocompatible nanoplatform for the treatment of melanoma. The Erlang loss formula, also known as the Erlang B formula, has been known for over a century and has been used in a wide range of applications, from telephony to hospital intensive care unit management. It provides the blocking probability of arriving customers to a loss system involving a finite number of servers without a waiting room. Because of the need to introduce priorities in many services, an extension of the Erlang B formula to the case of a loss system with preemptive priority is valuable and essential. This paper analytically establishes the consistency between the global balance (steady state) equations for a loss system with preemptive priorities and a known result obtained using traffic loss arguments for the same problem. This paper, for the first time, derives this known result directly from the global balance equations based on the relevant multidimensional Markov chain. The paper also addresses the question of whether or not the well-known insensitivity property of the Erlang loss system is also applicable to the case of a loss system with preemptive priorities, provides explanations, and demonstrates through simulations that, except for the blocking probability of the highest priority customers, the blocking probabilities of the other customers are sensitive to the service time distributions and that a larger service time variance leads to a lower blocking probability of the lower priority traffic.

IntroductionGrazing management is essential to maintain the stability of grassland ecosystems.MethodsTo determine the optimal rest-grazing period of alpine meadow, five rest-grazing periods were set based on soil thawing and plant re-greening in this study. The niche, interspecific relationships, and stability of plant communities at different rest-grazing periods were investigated.ResultsRest-grazing during soil thawing resulted in a small niche width and niche overlap of plants, overall positive interspecific associations, and a high stability of plant communities. Delayed rest-grazing time to plant re-greening resulted in a large niche width and niche overlap of plants, overall negative interspecific associations, and a low stability of plant communities.DiscussionRest-grazing in alpine meadows should begin as soon as possible to promote healthy and sustainable utilization of grasslands.

BackgroundCombining machine learning (ML) with gait analysis is widely applicable for diagnosing abnormal gait patterns.ObjectiveTo analyze gait adaptability characteristics in stroke patients, develop ML models to identify individuals with GAD, and select optimal diagnostic models and key classification features.MethodsThis study was investigated with 30 stroke patients (mean age 42.69 years, 60% male) and 50 healthy adults (mean age 41.34 years, 58% male). Gait adaptability was assessed using a CMill treadmill on gait adaptation tasks: target stepping, slalom walking, obstacle avoidance, and speed adaptation. The preliminary analysis of variables in both groups was conducted using t-tests and Pearson correlation. Features were extracted from demographics, gait kinematics, and gait adaptability datasets. ML models based on Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Multi-layer Perceptron, K-Nearest Neighbors, and AdaCost algorithm were trained to classify individuals with and without GAD. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy (ACC), sensitivity (SEN), F1-score and the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC).ResultsThe stroke group showed a significantly decreased gait speed (p = 0.000) and step length (SL) (p = 0.000), while the asymmetry of SL (p = 0.000) and ST (p = 0.000) was higher compared to the healthy group. The gait adaptation tasks significantly decreased in slalom walking (p = 0.000), obstacle avoidance (p = 0.000), and speed adaptation (p = 0.000). Gait speed (p = 0.000) and obstacle avoidance (p = 0.000) were significantly correlated with global F-A score in stroke patients. The AdaCost demonstrated better classification performance with an ACC of 0.85, SEN of 0.80, F1-score of 0.77, and ROC-AUC of 0.75. Obstacle avoidance and gait speed were identified as critical features in this model.ConclusionStroke patients walk slower with shorter SL and more asymmetry of SL and ST. Their gait adaptability was decreased, particularly in obstacle avoidance and speed adaptation. The faster gait speed and better obstacle avoidance were correlated with better functional mobility. The AdaCost identifies individuals with GAD and facilitates clinical decision-making. This advances the future development of user-friendly interfaces and computer-aided diagnosis systems.

Abstract Dendrite growth and other side‐reaction problems of zinc anodes in aqueous zinc‐ion batteries heavily affect their cycling lifespan and Coulombic efficiency, which can be effectively alleviated by the application of polymer‐based functional protection layer on the anode. However, the utilization rate of functional groups is difficult to improve without destroying the polymer chain. Here, a simple and well‐established strategy is proposed by controlling the orientation of functional groups (─SO3H) to assist the optimization of zinc anodes. Depending on the electrostatic effect, the surface‐enriched ─SO3H groups increase the ionic conductivity and homogenize the Zn2+ flux while inhibiting anionic permeation. This approach avoids the destruction of the polymer backbone by over‐sulfonation and amplifies the effect of functional groups. Therefore, the modified sulfonated polyether ether ketone (H‐SPEEK) coating‐optimized zinc anode is capable of longtime stable zinc plating/stripping, and moreover an enhanced cycling steadiness under high current densities is also detected in a series of Zn batteries with different cathode materials, which achieved by the inclusion of H‐SPEEK coating without causing any harmful effects on the electrolyte and cathode. This work provides an easy and efficient approach to further optimize the plating/stripping of cations on metal electrodes, and sheds lights on the scale‐up of high‐performance aqueous zinc‐ion battery technology.

Herbivore-avoided plant patches are one of the initial characteristics of natural grassland degradation. These vegetation patches can intensify the spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients within these grasslands. However, the effects of non-edible plant patches patches on the spatial heterogeneity of microorganisms have not been sufficiently studied in alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, especially patches formed by herbaceous plants. To answer this question, soil nutrients, plant assembly, and microbial communities were measured inside, around, and outside of Artemisia smithii patches. These were 0 m (within the patch), 0–1 m (one meter from the edge of the patch), 1–2 m (two meters from the edge of the patch), 2–3 m (three meters from the edge of the patch), and >30 m (non-patch grassland more than thirty meters from the edge of the patch). Our results showed that A. smithii patches accumulated more aboveground biomass (AGB) within the patches (0 m), and formed fertile islands with the soil around the patches. Additionally, A. smithii patches increased soil bacterial diversity within (0 m) and around (0–1 m) the patches by primarily enriching copiotrophic bacteria (Actinobacteria), while the diversity of fungal communities increased mainly in the 0–1 m area but not within the patches. Bacterial community diversity was driven by pH, urease, nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). The contents of soil water (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), urease, NO3−-N, and MBC were the main factors influencing the diversity of the fungal community. This study elucidates the vegetation, nutrients, and microbial heterogeneity and their interrelationships, which are observed in fertile islands of herbivore-avoided plant patches in alpine meadows, and provides further insights into the spatial pattern of nutrients in patchy degraded grasslands.

This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of wild and breeding juvenile rice field eel under conditions of ammonia and heat stress. The growth performance (FBW, WGR, SGR, and FCR) of 360 wild (24.22 ± 0.30 g) and 360 breeding (24.16 ± 0.27 g) strains was significantly hindered by ammonia and heat stress. The inhibitory effects were more obvious when the two stresses were combined. The growth performance and survival rates of the breeding strains outperformed that of the wild strains under identical stress conditions, this was explained by the expression of the growth-related gene (gh). They have increased the enzyme activity (CAT and GSH-Px) and expression of immune-related genes (cat, gpx3, and hsp90α) in response to oxidative stress. However, the results of certain indicator enzymes indicate the presence of oxidative damage in their tissues. The presence of an inflammatory response in the tissues was suggested by the up-regulation of genes associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines (il-1β and il-8) and the down-regulation of genes related to anti-inflammatory cytokines (il-10). Additionally, the presence of tissue damage was shown by the up-regulation of genes connected to apoptosis (cas2, cas8, and cas9) and the down-regulation of genes connected to tight junctions (zo-1). Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that breeding strains exhibited superior adaptability to ammonia and heat stress in comparison to wild strains.

Monopterus albus is one of China’s renowned and superior aquaculture species, with its seedlings mainly sourced from wild capture. One of the bottlenecks in M. albus aquaculture is the high mortality rate and low feeding initiation rate from stocking wild fry to the initiation of feeding. In production, trash fish is commonly used to wean M. albus juveniles onto feeding. In this study, we introduced three other natural feeds, earthworms (EW), yellow mealworms (YMW), and fly maggots (FM), with frozen trash fish (TF) serving as the control group, to evaluate the effects of these four natural feeds on the survival rate, feeding initiation, antioxidant enzymes activity, and body composition of M. albus juveniles under recirculating water aquaculture conditions. The experiment comprised four treatments, each with three replicates. Each replicate consisted of stocking 150 M. albus juveniles weighing 10.02 ± 0.89 g in size, raised for 5 weeks. The survival rate of the YMW group was 73.33%–85.33%, which was significantly higher than that of the other three bait groups (p < 0.05). The four bait groups showed no significant differences in final body weight and specific growth rate (SGR) (p > 0.05). The EW group showed the highest final body weight, with an average SGR of 2.73, whereas the YMW group had an average SGR of 1.87. The average daily feeding amount was significantly higher in EW and YMW groups than in the other two groups (p < 0.05). The percentage of feeding amount to fish weight in the EW group reached 7.3% in the fifth week. After 5 weeks of cultivation, NO2−-N content was significantly higher in the waters of the TF and EW groups than in the waters of the FM and YMW groups (p < 0.05), there was no significant difference in TAN content among the treatment groups (p > 0.05). Liver malondialdehyde content was significantly higher in the TF group than in the other bait groups (p < 0.05). GSH-Px activity was significantly higher in the EW group than in the FM group and YMW group. No significant differences in SOD and CAT activity and T-AOC were observed among the bait groups (p > 0.05). The increase in crude protein content was significantly higher in the TF group than in the FM group, but the increase in crude ash content was significantly lower in the TFgroup. In conclusion, Tenebrio molitor could potentially serve as one of the alternative feeds during the initial stages of M. albus juveniles stocking.

Abstract Aortic root aneurysm is a potentially life‐threatening condition that may lead to aortic rupture and is often associated with genetic syndromes, such as Marfan syndrome (MFS). Although studies with MFS animal models have provided valuable insights into the pathogenesis of aortic root aneurysms, this understanding of the transcriptomic and epigenomic landscape in human aortic root tissue remains incomplete. This knowledge gap has impeded the development of effective targeted therapies. Here, this study performs the first integrative analysis of single‐nucleus multiomic (gene expression and chromatin accessibility) and spatial transcriptomic sequencing data of human aortic root tissue under healthy and MFS conditions. Cell‐type‐specific transcriptomic and cis‐regulatory profiles in the human aortic root are identified. Regulatory and spatial dynamics during phenotypic modulation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), the cardinal cell type, are delineated. Moreover, candidate key regulators driving the phenotypic modulation of VSMC, such as FOXN3, TEAD1, BACH2, and BACH1, are identified. In vitro experiments demonstrate that FOXN3 functions as a novel key regulator for maintaining the contractile phenotype of human aortic VSMCs through targeting ACTA2. These findings provide novel insights into the regulatory and spatial dynamics during phenotypic modulation in the aneurysmal aortic root of humans.

Fish intestinal health under intensive aquaculture mode plays an important role in growth, development, and immune function. The present study was aimed to systematically investigate the differences of intestinal health between wild and cultured Monopterus albus by biochemical parameters, histomorphology, and molecular biology. A total of 15 healthy M. albus per group, with an average body weight of 45 g, were sampled to analyze intestinal health parameters. Compared with wild fish, the cultured M. albus in the foregut had lower trypsin, lipase, SOD, CAT, T-AOC, and GSH-Px activities (P < 0.05) and higher amylase activity and MDA content (P < 0.05). The villus circumference and goblet cells in the cultured group were significantly lower than those in the wild group (P < 0.05). In addition, the cultured fish showed lower relative expression levels of occludin, zo-1, zo-2, claudin-12, claudin-15, mucin5, mucin15, lysozyme, complement 3, il-10, tgf-β1, tgf-β2, and tgf-β3 (P < 0.05) and higher il-1β, il-6, il-8, tnf-a, and ifnγ mRNA expressions than those of wild fish (P < 0.05). In terms of gut microbiota, the cultured group at the phylum level displayed higher percentages of Chlamydiae and Spirochaetes and lower percentages of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia compared to the wild group (P < 0.05). At the genus level, higher abundances of Pseudomonadaceae_Pseudomonas and Spironema and lower abundances of Lactococcus and Cetobacterium were observed in the cultured group than in the wild group (P < 0.05). To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of the intestinal health status between wild and cultured M. albus in terms of biochemistry, histology, and molecular biology levels. Overall, the present study showed significant differences in intestinal health between wild and cultured M. albus and the main manifestations that wild M. albus had higher intestinal digestion, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal barrier functions than cultured M. albus. These results would provide theoretical basis for the subsequent upgrading of healthy aquaculture technology and nutrient regulation of intestinal health of cultured M. albus.

Abstract To further clarify the optimal target layer in the horizontal section of Wufeng–Longmaxi shale, we selected 126 shale samples from the Wufeng–Longmaxi Formations (Long11 1 to Long11 4 and Long12 submember) as the primary study objects from the perspective of the microscopic pore structure. We conducted this experimental study on the pore structure of shale samples according to various methods, including low-temperature nitrogen adsorption and carbon dioxide adsorption experiments, atomic force microscopy, and nano-computed tomography scanning. We calculated the fractal dimensions of samples at different horizons through the study of the characteristics of adsorption–desorption isotherms using the Frenkel–Halsey–Hill model. These results indicated that the shale samples had a complex pore structure (with a higher fractal dimension). The fractal dimensions were positively correlated with the specific surface area and total organic carbon content of the shale samples, weakly positively correlated with the micropore pore volume, and negatively correlated with the average pore radius. The samples from the Wufeng Formation and the Long11 1 and Long11 2 submembers had large fractal dimensions, whereas the samples from Long12 had the smallest fractal dimension. The pores of the shale samples generally were type H2/3, which were characterized by wedge, tabular, and ink-bottle shapes. Only three H3-type pore samples corresponded to the three smallest fractal dimension values. The Wufeng Formation’s Long 11 1 and Long 11 2 layers should be the target layers for horizontal wells. In this study, we identified the optimal target layer of the horizontal shale profile of Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation, which holds great significance for shale oil and gas development in this formation.

Abstract Boroxines are significant structures in the production of covalent organic frameworks, anion receptors, self-healing materials, and others. However, their utilization in aqueous media is a formidable task due to hydrolytic instability. Here we report a water-stable boroxine structure discovered from 2-hydroxyphenylboronic acid. We find that, under ambient environments, 2-hydroxyphenylboronic acid undergoes spontaneous dehydration to form a dimer with dynamic covalent bonds and aggregation-induced enhanced emission activity. Intriguingly, upon exposure to water, the dimer rapidly transforms into a boroxine structure with excellent pH stability and water-compatible dynamic covalent bonds. Building upon these discoveries, we report the strong binding capacity of boroxines toward fluoride ions in aqueous media, and develop a boroxine-based hydrogel with high acid–base stability and reversible gel–sol transition. This discovery of the water-stable boroxine structure breaks the constraint of boroxines not being applicable in aqueous environments, opening a new era of researches in boroxine chemistry.

Currently, human health due to corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been seriously threatened. The coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) protein plays a crucial role in virus transmission and several S-based therapeutic approaches have been approved for the treatment of COVID-19. However, the efficacy is compromised by the SARS-CoV-2 evolvement and mutation. Here we report the SARS-CoV-2 S protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) inhibitor licorice-saponin A3 (A3) could widely inhibit RBD of SARS-CoV-2 variants, including Beta, Delta, and Omicron BA.1, XBB and BQ1.1. Furthermore, A3 could potently inhibit SARS-CoV-2 Omicron virus in Vero E6 cells, with EC50 of 1.016 μM. The mechanism was related to binding with Y453 of RBD determined by hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) analysis combined with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) simulations. Interestingly, phosphoproteomics analysis and multi fluorescent immunohistochemistry (mIHC) respectively indicated that A3 also inhibits host inflammation by directly modulating the JNK and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways and rebalancing the corresponding immune dysregulation. This work supports A3 as a promising broad-spectrum small molecule drug candidate for COVID-19.

Abstract This comprehensive review systematically examines the multifarious aspects of Nelumbo nucifera, elucidating its ecological, nutritional, medicinal, and biomimetic significance. Renowned both culturally and scientifically, Nelumbo nucifera manifests remarkable adaptability, characterized by its extensive distribution across varied climatic regions, underpinned by its robust rhizome system and prolific reproductive strategies. Ecologically, this species plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, primarily through biofiltration, thereby enhancing habitat biodiversity. The rhizomes and seeds of Nelumbo nucifera are nutritionally significant, being rich sources of dietary fiber, essential vitamins, and minerals, and have found extensive culinary applications. From a medicinal perspective, diverse constituents of Nelumbo nucifera exhibit therapeutic potential, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-cancer properties. Recent advancements in preservation technology and culinary innovation have further underscored its role in the food industry, highlighting its nutritional versatility. In biomimetics, the unique "lotus effect" is leveraged for the development of self-cleaning materials. Additionally, the transformation of Nelumbo nucifera into biochar is being explored for its potential in sustainable environmental practices. This review emphasizes the critical need for targeted conservation strategies to protect Nelumbo nucifera against the threats posed by climate change and habitat loss, advocating for its sustainable utilization as a species of significant value. A comprehensive investigation of the physicochemical properties of overlying water and sediments in Hangzhou West Lake, China was conducted. A wide range of crucial physical parameters were analyzed, revealing significant spatial and seasonal differences. Total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations in overlying water met the Class III limits (TN ≤2 mg/L, TP ≤0.2 mg/L, COD ≤20 mg/L) of the Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Waters (GB3838–2002), indicating relatively good overall water quality. However, concerns were raised regarding potential eutrophication, particularly evident during summer with explosive chlorophyll-a growth in certain lake areas like WH (266 mg/L) and XLH (239 mg/L). Lakes receiving direct diversion showed lower TN and TP versus non-diverted lakes. This research provides valuable insight into the complex nutrient dynamics and conditions of West Lake, improving understanding of lake ecosystem management and sustainable conservation strategies.

Abstract Background This real‐world study investigated the outcome of COVID‐19 in lymphoma patients participating in registered clinical trials and explored potential risk factors with the outcome of COVID‐19 during the first wave of the Omicron outbreak in China. Methods One hundred and ten patients participating in registered clinical trials and diagnosed with COVID‐19 in our center between December 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, were included. Results Four (3.6%) patients were identified as severe COVID‐19 and 2 (1.8%) as critical COVID‐19, respectively. The mortality rate observed was 2.73% for the entire cohort, 33.3% for the severe/critical COVID‐19 group, and 18.8% for the hospitalized group. The 90‐day OS was 98.2% for the entire cohort, 66.7% for the severe/critical COVID‐19 group, and 87.5% for the hospitalized group. Advanced age (≥70 years), comorbidities, and PI3K inhibitor‐containing regimen were significantly associated with the severity of COVID‐19. Patients with indolent B‐cell non‐Hodgkin lymphomas were less likely to be hospitalized for COVID‐19. Conclusion This study reported similar clinical features of COVID‐19 in our cohort with that of non‐hematological malignancy (HM) patients, while the proportion of severe/critical COVID‐19 and the mortality rate were relatively higher than non‐HM patients. Our findings provided valuable experience to aid clinical researchers with managing lymphoma patients participating in registered clinical trials during the ongoing pandemic of the Omicron variant.

BackgroundInflammation and liver function are associated with cognitive decline and dementia. Little is known about the serum albumin-to-globulin ratio on cognitive function.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to investigate the association between albumin-to-globulin ratio and cognitive function among the American older people.MethodsThe public data available on the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2014 was used for this cross-sectional study. Participants aged ≥60 years completed the cognitive function assessments, including word learning and recall modules from the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD), the animal fluency (AF) test, and the digit symbol substitution test (DSST). A composite cognition score was calculated to evaluate global cognition. The univariate and multivariate linear regression analysis, curve fitting, a threshold effect, along with a subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted.ResultsSerum albumin-to-globulin ratio (per 0.1 unit) was positively associated DSST score (β = 0.36, 95% CI: 0.21, 0.51), AF score (β = 0.1, 95% CI: 0.04, 0.16) and global cognition score (β = 0.05, 95% CI: 0.02, 0.07), after being fully adjusted, while albumin-to-globulin ratio was not related to CERAD score (β = 0.05, 95% CI: −0.02, 0.12). A non-linear was observed in the dose–response relationship between albumin-to-globulin ratio and global cognition (P for non-linearity < 0.001). The subgroup analysis was overall stable, yet the interaction test was significant for age on global cognition (P for interaction = 0.036).ConclusionThe findings of this cross-sectional study suggested a positive and non-linear association between albumin-to-globulin ratio and cognitive function in the American older people. Maintaining albumin-to-globulin ratio with an appropriate range may be one of the therapeutic strategies to limit the progression of cognitive decline for the older people.

To investigate the impact of the effect of high temperature stimulation on Monopterus albus larvae after a certain period of time, five experimental groups were established at different temperatures. Then, the M. albus under high temperature stress was fed at 30°C for 70 days. After that, the growth index of the M. albus was counted and analyzed. In terms of growth index, high temperature stress had significant effects on FCR, FBW, WGR, and SGR of M. albus (p < 0.05). The SR increased after being stimulated by temperature (p < 0.1). The study revealed that liver cells of M. albus were harmed by elevated temperatures of 36°C and 38°C. In the experimental group, the activities of digestive enzymes changed in the same trend, reaching the highest point in the 32°C group and then decreasing, and the AMS activity in the 38°C group was significantly different from that in the 30°C group (p < 0.05). The activities of antioxidase in liver reached the highest at 34°C, which was significantly different from those at 30°C (p < 0.05). In addition, the expression levels of TLR1, C3, TNF-α, and other genes increased in the experimental group, reaching the highest point at 34°C, and the expression level of the IL-1β gene reached the highest point at 32°C, which was significantly different from that at 30°C (p < 0.05). However, the expression level of the IRAK3 gene decreased in the experimental group and reached its lowest point at 34°C (p < 0.05). The expression level of the HSP90α gene increased with the highest temperature stimulus and reached its highest point at 38°C (p < 0.05). In the α diversity index of intestinal microorganisms in the experimental group, the observed species, Shannon, and Chao1 indexes in the 34°C group were the highest (p < 0.05), and β diversity analysis revealed that the intestinal microbial community in the experimental group was separated after high temperature stimulation. At the phylum level, the three dominant flora are Proteus, Firmicutes, and Bacteroides. Bacteroides and Macrococcus abundance increased at the genus level, but Vibrio and Aeromonas abundance decreased. To sum up, appropriate high-temperature stress can enhance the immunity and adaptability of M. albus. These results show that the high temperature stimulation of 32°C–34°C is beneficial to the industrial culture of M. albus.

Introduction: Sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the eyelids, known as adenomatoid or pseudoadenomatous hyperplasia, is a rare benign condition. Optimal management strategies for this specific type of eyelid tumor require further investigation. Case presentation: The patient presented with a 21-year history of a progressively enlarged mass in the right lower eyelid. Previous treatments, including laser photocoagulation and surgical excision, have failed to prevent recurrence. The mass, characterized by a firm texture and low mobility, has raised concerns regarding malignancy. However, histopathological examination following surgical excision identified the mass as sebaceous gland hyperplasia. The patient's medical history was notable for benign gastrointestinal and intestinal polyps with no evidence of malignancy. Conclusions: A final diagnosis of eyelid sebaceous gland hyperplasia was established after surgical excision and comprehensive histopathological analyses. The patient's successful recovery without recurrence over a three-month follow-up period post-surgery highlights the efficacy of the surgical approach and the use of intraoperative frozen section pathological examination.

Junctional adhesion molecule-A (JAM-A) is an adhesion molecule that exists on the surface of certain types of cells, including white blood cells, endothelial cells, and dendritic cells. In this study, the cDNA sequences of JAM-A-Fc were chemically synthesized with optimization for mammalian expression. Afterward, we analyzed JAM-A protein expression through transient transfection in HEK293 cell lines. Mice were immunized with JAM-A-Fc protein, and hybridoma was prepared by fusing myeloma cells and mouse spleen cells. Antibodies were purified from the hybridoma supernatant and four monoclonal strains were obtained and numbered 61H9, 70E5, 71A8, and 74H3 via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay screening. Immunofluorescence staining assay showed 61H9 was the most suitable cell line for mAb production due to its fluorescence signal being the strongest. Flow cytometric analysis proved that 61H9 possessed high affinity. Moreover, antagonism of JAM-A mAb could attenuate the proliferative, migrative, and invasive abilities of ESCC cells and significantly inhibit tumor growth in mice. By examining hematoxylin-eosin staining mice tumor tissues, we found inflammatory cells infiltrated lightly in the anti-JAM-A group. The expression of BCL-2 and IκBα in the anti-JAM-A group were decreased in mice tumor tissues compared to the control group. Ultimately, a method for preparing high-yield JAM-A-Fc protein was created and a high affinity mAb against JAM-A with an antitumor effect was prepared.

Abstract The realization of compact and efficient broadband mid-infrared (MIR) lasers has enormous impacts in promoting MIR spectroscopy for various important applications. A number of well-designed waveguide platforms have been demonstrated for MIR supercontinuum and frequency comb generations based on cubic nonlinearities, but unfortunately third-order nonlinear response is inherently weak. Here, we propose and demonstrate for the first time a χ (2) micrometer waveguide platform based on birefringence phase matching for long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) laser generation with a high quantum efficiency. In a ZnGeP2-based waveguide platform, an octave-spanning spectrum covering 5–11 μm is generated through optical parametric generation (OPG). A quantum conversion efficiency of 74% as a new record in LWIR single-pass parametric processes is achieved. The threshold energy is measured as ~616 pJ, reduced by more than 1-order of magnitude as compared to those of MIR OPGs in bulk media. Our prototype micro-waveguide platform could be extended to other χ (2) birefringence crystals and trigger new frontiers of MIR integrated nonlinear photonics.

Abstract This report introduces a young adult who has been in bed for more than ten years with end-stage hemophilic arthropathy. He didn’t have access to factor VIII (FVIII) in the early stage of hemophilia due to the high costs of clotting replacement therapy. As a result, he is experiencing some difficulties, such as joint contracture, muscular atrophy, severe pain, and poor function of cardiopulmonary. He came to visit us for a comprehensive rehabilitation program, and, finally, he achieved the basic goal of self-care in daily life.

Abstract Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common and deadly cancer and often accompanied by varying degrees of liver damage, leading to the dysfunction of fatty acid metabolism (FAM). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between FAM and HBV-associated HCC and identify FAM biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of HBV-associated HCC. Methods Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) was used to analyze the difference of FAM pathway between paired tumor and adjacent normal tissue samples in 58 HBV-associated HCC patients from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Next, 117 HBV-associated HCC patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were analyzed to establish a prognostic signature based on 42 FAM genes. Then, the prognostic signature was validated in an external cohort consisting of 30 HBV-associated HCC patients. Finally, immune infiltration analysis was performed to evaluate the FAM-related immune cells in HBV-associated HCC. Results As a result, FAM pathway was clearly downregulated in tumor tissue of HBV-associated HCC, and survival analysis demonstrated that 12 FAM genes were associated with the prognosis of HBV-associated HCC. Lasso-penalized Cox regression analysis identified and established a five-gene signature (ACADVL, ACAT1, ACSL3, ADH4 and ECI1), which showed effective discrimination and prediction for the prognosis of HBV-associated HCC both in the TCGA cohort and the validation cohort. Immune infiltration analysis showed that the high-risk group, identified by FAM signature, of HBV-associated HCC had a higher ratio of Tregs, which was associated with the prognosis. Conclusions Collectively, these findings suggest that there is a strong connection between FAM and HBV-associated HCC, indicating a potential therapeutic strategy targeting FAM to block the accumulation of Tregs into the tumor microenvironment of HBV-associated HCC.

Due to the complexity of the state change mechanism of lithium batteries, there are problems such as difficulties in aging characterization. Establishing a state assessment model for lithium batteries can reduce its safety risk in energy storage power station applications. Therefore, this paper proposes a method for establishing a lithium battery model including aging resistance under the combination of digital and analog, and uses the time–frequency domain test analysis method to establish the aging impedance expression to realize the parameterization of the aging process and state estimation of lithium batteries. A battery model that can characterize the battery aging process is established by combining digital and simulation methods, and the equivalent representation of the lithium battery aging process is realized. Finally, a simulation example is designed to verify its effectiveness, which provides important reference value for the practical engineering application of lithium battery energy storage system.

Given the rapid construction of freeways in developing countries such as China, land use is constantly under strict constraints, leading to challenges in adopting conventional layouts for interchanges. Implementing right-turn ramps on the left (RTRL) at interchanges can minimize land occupancy; however, the traffic safety level in this type of diversion area design requires extra attention. This study examines the decision sight distance for right-turn exit ramps on the left side. Utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) video and the YOLOv3 target detection algorithm, the original trajectory data of vehicles in the diversion area is extracted. Employing Kalman filtering and Frenet coordinate system conversion reveals microscopic vehicle lane-change patterns, velocities, and time headways. Furthermore, the driving simulation experiment assesses driver behaviors in RTRL, with subjective, task performance, and physiological measure indicators. Ultimately, the range of the decision sight distance is defined, and establishing a calculation model involves determining relevant parameters based on measured data and simulation outcomes. The results indicate potential insufficiencies in the decision sight distance when standardized values are applied to RTRL.

Loop closure detection (LCD), also known as place recognition, is a crucial component of visual simultaneous localization and mapping (vSLAM) systems, aiding in the reduction of cumulative localization errors on a global scale. However, changes in environmental appearance and differing viewpoints pose significant challenges to the accuracy of the LCD algorithm. Addressing this issue, this paper presents a novel end-to-end framework (MetricNet) for LCDs to enhance detection performance in complex scenes with distinct appearance variations. Focusing on deep features with high distinguishability, an attention-based Channel Weighting Module(CWM) is designed to adaptively detect salient regions of interest. In addition, a patch-by-patch Similarity Measurement Module (SMM) is incorporated to steer the network for handling challenging situations that tend to cause perceptual aliasing. Experiments on three typical datasets have demonstrated MetricNet’s appealing detection performance and generalization ability compared to many state-of-the-art learning-based methods, where the mean average precision is increased by up to 11.92%, 18.10%, and 5.33% respectively. Moreover, the detection results on additional open datasets with apparent viewpoint variations and the odometry dataset for localization problems have also revealed the dependability of MetricNet under different adaptation scenarios.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of substituting a portion of feed with Tenebrio molitor (TM) and Elodea nuttallii (EN) on crayfish culture. A total of 270 crayfish (5.1 ± 0.4 g) were fed three different diet combinations (A: 100% feed; B: 80% feed + 10% TM + 10% EN; C: 75% feed + 15% TM + 10% EN) for 12 weeks. The findings demonstrated that group C had an important beneficial impact on the growth performance of crayfish. This was evidenced by a rise in digestive enzyme activity (trypsin, lipase, and cellulase) in the intestinal and hepatopancreas, as well as an upregulation in the expression of growth-related genes (ghsr, igfbp7, mhc, mlc1, mef2, and pax7) in the muscle. Furthermore, the assessment of the flesh quality of crayfish muscle in group C was conducted. The findings indicated a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the energy value (moisture, crude protein, and crude lipid) within the muscle. The levels of delicious amino acids (Glu, Ala, Ser, Gly, and Tyr) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (ARA, DHA) were enhanced, resulting in an improved nutritional profile and flavor of the muscle while maintaining the Σn-3/Σn-6 ratio. The remodeling of the intestinal microbiota (abundance of Proteobacteria and ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidota bacteria) also revealed improved growth performance. Additional research is necessary to ascertain whether excessive use of TM or EN feed substitution can have negative effects on crayfish culture.

The present study aimed to systematically investigate the underlying differences in flesh quality between wild and farmed Monopterus albus. Fifteen healthy M. albus per group with an average body weight of 45 g were sampled to analyze muscle parameters by biochemical indicators, histomorphology, and molecular biology. Compared with the wild fish, the farmed M. albus in flesh had lower crude protein, collagen, lysine, histidine, total amino acids, SFA, n-3 PUFA contents, and n-3/n-6 ratio (p < 0.05), and higher moisture, crude lipid, crude ash, MUFA, n-6PUFA, and total PUFA contents (p < 0.05). The thawing loss, drip loss, steaming loss, and boiling loss in the farmed group were significantly higher, and hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, chewiness, and resilience were significantly lower than those in the wild group (p < 0.05). In addition, higher muscle fiber density and lower muscle fiber diameter were observed in wild M. albus (p < 0.05). In muscle transcriptome profiling, differentially expressed genes and enriched pathways are primarily associated with muscle development, protein synthesis, catabolism, lipid metabolism, and immunity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation that compares the flesh quality between wild and farmed M. albus in terms of biochemistry, histology, and molecular biology levels. Overall, wild M. albus had a higher nutritional value and texture quality than farmed M. albus.

Abstract Background Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is generally unavoidable following liver transplantation. Here, we investigated the role of protein phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ dependent 1G (PPM1G) in hepatic IRI. Methods Hepatic IRI was mimicked by employing a hypoxia/reperfusion (H/R) model in RAW 264.7 cells and a 70% warm ischemia model in C57BL/6 mice, respectively. In vitro, expression changes of tumor necrosis factor‐α and interleukin were detected by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction (qRT‐PCR), western blot analysis, and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. The protein expressions of PPM1G and the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway components were analyzed by western blot. Interaction between PPM1G and STING was verified by coimmunoprecipitation (CO‐IP). Immunofluorescence was applied for detection of p‐IRF3. Flow cytometry, qRT‐PCR and western blot were utilized to analyze markers of macrophage polarization. In vivo, histological analyses of mice liver were carried out by TUNEL and H&E staining. Changes in serum aminotransferases were also detected. Results Following H/R intervention, a steady decline in PPM1G along with an increase in inflammatory cytokines in vitro was observed. Addition of plasmid with PPM1G sequence limited the release of inflammatory cytokines and downregulated phosphorylation of STING. CO‐IP validated the interaction between PPM1G and STING. Furthermore, inhibition of PPM1G with lentivirus enhanced phosphorylation of STING and its downstream components; meanwhile, p65, p38, and Jnk were also surged to phosphorylation. Expression of INOS and CD86 was surged, while CD206, Arg‐1, and IL‐10 were inhibited. In vivo, PPM1G inhibition further promoted liver damage, hepatocyte apoptosis, and transaminases release. Selective inhibition of STING with C‐176 partially reversed the activation of STING pathway and inflammatory cytokines in vitro. M1 markers were also suppressed by C‐176. In vivo, C‐176 rescued liver damage and transaminase release caused by PPM1G inhibition. Conclusion PPM1G suppresses hepatic IRI and macrophage M1 phenotype by repressing STING‐mediated inflammatory pathways.

The construction of cities and economic development lead to more and more serious environmental pollution, and the concept of green and low-carbon city has been proposed. Therefore, a series of requirements have been put forward for transportation. CO and other pollutants will be produced in the exhaust of conventional fuel vehicles, which will seriously affect the urban environment, especially at intersections with large passenger and vehicle flows. When multiple roads, especially more than 4 roads, intersect on urban roads, traffic organization can usually be achieved by using a roundabout. However, due to the limited capacity of the conventional roundabout, with the rapid increase of the traffic volume, and there are many vehicles in the circle lane change and interweaving behavior. This has caused serious congestion at the roundabout, the significantly increase in pollutants emissions and the decline in air quality. As an unconventional design, the turbo roundabouts use canalized traffic to allowed drivers to select the appropriate lanes in advance depending on their destinations so that different lanes within the circle do not interfere with one another, which improves the safety of the intersection while ensuring capacity. The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the traffic efficiency and safety of the conventional roundabout scheme and turbo roundabout scheme for five-way intersections. Using VISSIM to simulate different forms of roundabout and analyzing the six selected evaluation indicators. The number of vehicles in different entrance lanes and the diameter of the circle are selected as sensitivity factors for sensitivity analysis. Finally, the factor analysis method (FAM) is used to classify the six indicators into two categories: traffic efficiency and traffic safety, so as to comprehensively evaluate the different schemes. The results show that the difference in performance between the two schemes was not significant at low traffic volumes. At high traffic volumes, the turbo roundabout was better than the conventional roundabout in terms of emissions, safety and throughput efficiency. CO emissions from vehicles on conventional roundabout are generally higher than those on turbo roundabout, up to 53.62%. Therefore, the turbo roundabout is more appropriate for heavy traffic conditions.

Objective: To describe our experience of reducing anastomotic leakage, a problem that has not been properly solved. Methods: Starting in January 2020, we began implementing our integrated strategy (application of an esophageal diameter-approximated slender gastric tube, preservation of the fibrous tissue around the residual esophagus and thyroid inferior pole anastomosis) in consecutive patients undergoing esophagectomy without a nasogastric tube or a nasal-jejunum feeding tube. Additionally, the blood supply at the site of the anastomosis was evaluated with a near-infrared fluorescence thoracoscope after the completion of esophagogastric anastomosis in the integrated strategy group. Results: Of 570 patients who were reviewed, 119 (20.9%) underwent the integrated strategy, and 451 (79.1%) underwent the conventional strategy. The rate of anastomotic leakage was 2.5% in the integrated strategy group and 10.2% in the conventional strategy group (p = 0.008). In the integrated strategy group, the site of most of the anastomotic blood supply was the residual esophagus dominant (82.4%), followed by the gastroesophageal dual-dominant (12.6%) and the gastric tube dominant (5.0%). The reconstruction route was more likely to be orthotopic in the integrated strategy group than in the conventional strategy group (89.9% vs. 38.6%, p = 0.004). Gastric dilation was identified in 3.4% of the patients in the integrated strategy group and in 21.1% in the conventional strategy group. Conclusions: Patients who underwent our proposed integrated strategy (Zhengzhou Strategy) during McKeown esophagectomy without a nasogastric tube or a nasal-jejunum feeding tube had a strikingly lower rate of anastomotic leakage and a relatively lower rate of postoperative complications, such as gastric tube dilation and delayed gastric emptying.

Given the serious neurological complications and deaths associated with enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection, there is an urgent need to develop effective antivirals against this viral infection. In this study, we demonstrated that two Cathelicidin-derived peptides, LL-18 and FF-18 were more potent against EV71 infection than the parent peptide LL-37, which is the mature and processed form of Cathelicidin. These peptides could directly bind to the EV71 virus particles, but not to coxsackievirus, indicative of their high specificity. The binding of peptides with the virus surface occupied the viral canyon region in a way that could block virus-receptor interactions and inhibit viral uncoating. In addition, these peptide analogues could also relieve the deleterious effect of EV71 infection in vivo. Therefore, Cathelicidin-derived peptides might be excellent candidates for further development of antivirals to treat EV71 infection.

IntroductionTo better understand the role of immune escape and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) in colon adenocarcinoma (COAD), an integrative analysis of the tumor microenvironment was performed using a set of 12 immune- and CAF-related genes (ICRGs).MethodsUnivariate and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analyses were used to establish a prognostic signature based on the expression of these 12 genes (S1PR5, AEN, IL20RB, FGF9, OSBPL1A, HSF4, PCAT6, FABP4, KIF15, ZNF792, CD1B and GLP2R). This signature was validated in both internal and external cohorts and was found to have a higher C-index than previous COAD signatures, confirming its robustness and reliability. To make use of this signature in clinical settings, a nomogram incorporating ICRG signatures and key clinical parameters, such as age and T stage, was developed. Finally, the role of S1PR5 in the immune response of COAD was validated through in vitro cytotoxicity experiments.ResultsThe developed nomogram exhibited slightly improved predictive accuracy compared to the ICRG signature alone, as indicated by the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC, nomogram:0.838; ICRGs:0.807). The study also evaluated the relationships between risk scores (RS) based on the expression of the ICRGs and other key immunotherapy variables, including immune checkpoint expression, immunophenoscore (IPS), and microsatellite instability (MSI). Image sentiment analysis technology can predict, measure and understand the emotional experience of human beings through images. Aiming at the problem of extracting emotional characteristics in art appreciation, this article puts forward an innovative method. Firstly, the PageRank algorithm is enhanced using tweet content similarity and time factors; secondly, the SE-ResNet network design is used to integrate Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) with the residual network structure, and ResNeXt50 is optimized to enhance the extraction of image sentiment features. Finally, the weight coefficients of overall emotions are dynamically adjusted to select a specific emotion incorporation strategy, resulting in effective bimodal fusion. The proposed model demonstrates exceptional performance in predicting sentiment labels, with maximum classification accuracy reaching 88.20%. The accuracy improvement of 21.34% compared to the traditional deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN) model attests to the effectiveness of this study. This research enriches images and texts’ emotion feature extraction capabilities and improves the accuracy of emotion fusion classification.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that brain white matter hyperintensities (WMH) are more common in patients receiving epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR‐TKI) and identify clinical risk factors associated with WMH. Experimental design This multiple‐center, prospective cohort study was conducted from March 2017 to July 2020. Two groups of patients with non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received or did not receive EGFR‐TKI were included and followed up for more than 24 months. The progression of WMH was defined as an increase of ≥1 point on the Fazekas visual rating scale between the baseline and at the 2‐year follow‐up. A modified Poisson regression model was performed to evaluate risk factors on increased WMH load. Results Among 286 patients with NSCLC, 194 (68%) patients with NSCLC who received EGFR‐TKI and 92 (32%) patients with NSCLC without EGFR‐TKI treatment were analyzed. Modified Poisson regression analysis showed that EGFR‐TKI treatment was independently associated with the WMH progression (EGFR‐TKI: aRR 2.72, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.46–5.06, p = .002). Interleukin (IL)‐2, IL‐4, and IL‐10 were associated with increased WMH in the adjusted model (IL‐2: aRR 1.55 [95% CI 1.06–2.25], p = .023; IL‐4: aRR 1.66 [95% CI 1.13–2.43], p = .010; IL‐10: aRR 1.48 [95% CI 1.06–2.06], p = .020). Conclusion Patients with NSCLC who received EGFR‐TKI may be at higher risk of developing WMH or worsening of WMH burden. The impact of increased WMH lesions in these patients is to be further assessed. IL‐2, IL‐4, and IL‐10 may be used as potential biomarkers to monitor the risk of increased WMH burden

Non-technical losses are consistently a troubling issue for power suppliers. With the application and popularization of smart grid and advanced measurement systems, it has become possible to use data-driven methods to detect anomalous electricity consumption to reduce non-technical losses. A range of machine learning models have been utilized for detecting anomalous electricity consumption and have achieved promising results. However, with the evolution of techniques like electricity theft, coupled with the exponential increase in electricity consumption data, new challenges are constantly being posed for anomalous electricity consumption detection. We propose a Transformer-based method for detecting anomalous electricity consumption. The Transformer is composed of multi-head attention, layer normalization, point-wise feed-forward network, etc., which can effectively handle electricity consumption time-series data. Meanwhile, to alleviate the problem of imbalanced training data between anomalous and normal electricity consumption, we propose a method for synthesizing anomalies. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed Transformer-based method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in detecting anomalous electricity consumption, achieving a precision of 93.9%, a recall of 96.3%, an F1-score of 0.951, and an accuracy of 95.6% on a dataset released by the State Grid Corporation of China.

Planting Elymus nutans artificial grassland to replace degraded Artemisia baimaensis grassland on the Qinghai Tibetan plateau (QTP) can effectively alleviate local grass-livestock imbalance. However, it is unknown whether the allelopathy of natural grassland plant A. baimaensis on E. nutans affects grassland establishment. Accordingly, we examined the effects of varying concentrations of aqueous extracts of A. baimaensis litter on the seed germination and early seedling growth of E. nutans, and the effects of A. baimaensis volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the growth parameters and physiological characteristics of E. nutans. The results indicate that the aqueous extract inhibited the force, percentage, and index of germination of E. nutans and affected early seedling growth, particularly at high concentrations. Further, the VOCs significantly reduced the aboveground and root biomass of E. nutans and increased malondialdehyde concentrations. Additionally, these VOCs altered the antioxidant enzyme activities and increased the superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, ascorbic acid peroxidase, soluble sugar, and proline content but significantly decreased glutathione reductase levels. Our results indicate that the allelopathy of A. baimaensis significantly inhibited the germination and seedling growth of E. nutans . Thus, the leaching of A. baimaensis may produce allelochemicals in the soil that inhibit the germination of E. nutans seeds. Moreover, the VOCs of A. baimaensis may disrupt the growth process, resulting in a decrease in biomass and a disruption of the physiological metabolism of seedlings under field conditions.

The aim of this trial was to investigate the effects of dietary protein and lipid levels on growth performance and flesh quality of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). A 3 × 3 two-factor design was used, including three crude protein levels of 46%, 50%, 54% (P46, P50, P54) and three crude lipid levels of 8%, 12%, 16% (L8, L12, L16). Thus, a total of nine diets (P46/L8, P46/L12, P46/L16, P50/L8, P50/L12, P50/L16, P54/L8, P54/L12 and P54/L16) were prepared and fed to large-size largemouth bass with initial body weight of 109.7 g for 84 days. At the same dietary protein level, weight gain rate (WGR), protein efficiency rate (PER), viscerosomatic index and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) percent in flesh showed an increasing trend with increasing the dietary lipid level, while feed conversion ratio (FCR) showed a decreasing trend. At P46 and P50, whole fish crude protein, muscle crude protein, total collagen content, hardness, springiness, chewiness and shear force increased, and steaming loss and freezing loss decreased with increasing the dietary lipid level, while the above indicators showed an opposite trend at P54. At P50, the protein retention (PR) of 16% crude lipid group was significantly higher than that in the 8% and 12% crude lipid groups (P 0.05). The P50/L16 group showed the highest PER, PR, whole fish protein, muscle protein, total collagen, PUFAs, muscle hardness, springiness, chewiness, shear force and the lowest steaming loss. In conclusion, based on growth performance and flesh quality, the appropriate dietary protein and lipid requirements for large-size largemouth bass were 50% and 16%, respectively.

Abstract An ultra-low pump intensity and high photon flux have been long pursuits of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids. However, there is lack of a criterion to identify a pristine solid material exhibiting such characteristics. Here, we report systematic investigation into HHG from a cadmium telluride (CdTe) bulk crystal with a flat band dispersion near the Fermi level which leads to a large density of states. The measured pump intensity for the 31st harmonics (229 nm) is only 75 GW/cm2, one order of magnitude lower than that of other pristine crystals including two-dimensional materials reported so far. A comparative measurement shows CdTe has two-to-three orders of magnitude stronger HHG than silicon does, and high HHG yields in the ultraviolet region compared to GaSe. A high photon flux of ~ 6 × 1012 photons/s (5th −8th) with a robust long-time sustainability is obtained. This work offers a route towards compact vacuum ultraviolet laser sources.

Abstract Background Acute lung injury (ALI), manifested as strong pulmonary inflammation and alveolar epithelial damage, is a life-threatening disease with high morbidity and mortality. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), secreted by multiple types of cells, are critical cellular communication mediators and can inhibit inflammation by transferring bioactive molecules, such as microRNAs (miRNAs). Thus, we hypothesized that sEVs derived from mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC sEVs) could transfer miRNAs to attenuate inflammation of lung epithelial cells during ALI. Methods C57BL/6 male mice were intratracheally administered LPS (10 mg/kg). Six hours later, the mice were randomly administered with MSC sEVs (40 µg per mouse in 150 µl of saline), which were collected by ultracentrifugation. Control group received saline administration. After 48 h, the mice were sacrificed to evaluate pulmonary microvascular permeability and inflammatory responses. In vitro, A549 cells and primary human small airway epithelial cells (SAECs) were stimulated with LPS with or without MSC sEVs treatment. Results In vitro, MSC sEVs could also inhibit the inflammation induced by LPS in A549 cells and SAECs (reducing TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and MCP-1). Moreover, MSC sEV treatment improved the survival rate, alleviated pulmonary microvascular permeability, and inhibited proinflammatory responses (reducing TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and JE-1) in ALI mice. Notably, miR-223-3p was found to be served as a critical mediator in MSC sEV-induced regulatory effects through inhibition of poly (adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) in lung epithelial cells. Conclusions Overall, these findings suggest that MSC sEVs may offer a novel promising strategy for ALI.

Abstract Deimination is a post-translational modification catalyzed by a family of enzymes named peptidylarginine deiminases (PADs). PADs transform arginine residues of protein substrates into citrulline. Deimination has been associated with numerous physiological and pathological processes. In human skin, three PADs are expressed (PAD1-3). While PAD3 is important for hair shape formation, the role of PAD1 is less clear. To decipher the main role(s) of PAD1 in epidermal differentiation, its expression was down-regulated using lentivirus-mediated shRNA interference in primary keratinocytes and in three-dimensional reconstructed human epidermis (RHE). Compared to normal RHEs, down-regulation of PAD1 caused a drastic reduction in deiminated proteins. Whereas proliferation of keratinocytes was not affected, their differentiation was disturbed at molecular, cellular and functional levels. The number of corneocyte layers was significantly reduced, expression of filaggrin and cornified cell envelope components, such as loricrin and transglutaminases, was down-regulated, epidermal permeability increased and trans-epidermal-electric resistance diminished drastically. Keratohyalin granule density decreased and nucleophagy in the granular layer was disturbed. These results demonstrate that PAD1 is the main regulator of protein deimination in RHE. Its deficiency alters epidermal homeostasis, affecting the differentiation of keratinocytes, especially the cornification process, a special kind of programmed cell death.
