Background In maintenance hemodialysis patients, intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a frequent complication that has been associated with poor clinical outcomes. Prediction of IDH may facilitate timely interventions and eventually reduce IDH rates. Methods We developed a machine learning model to predict IDH in in-center hemodialysis patients 15–75 min in advance. IDH was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) Results We utilized data from 693 patients who contributed 42 656 hemodialysis sessions and 355 693 intradialytic SBP measurements. IDH occurred in 16.2% of hemodialysis treatments. Our model predicted IDH 15–75 min in advance with an AUROC of 0.89. Top IDH predictors were the most recent intradialytic SBP and IDH rate, as well as mean nadir SBP of the previous 10 dialysis sessions. Conclusions Real-time prediction of IDH during an ongoing hemodialysis session is feasible and has a clinically actionable predictive performance. If and to what degree this predictive information facilitates the timely deployment of preventive interventions and translates into lower IDH rates and improved patient outcomes warrants prospective studies.

BackgroundHemodialysis patients have high-risk of severe SARS-CoV-2 infection but were unrepresented in randomized controlled trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines. We estimated the real-world effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in a large international cohort of hemodialysis patients.MethodsIn this historical, 1:1 matched cohort study, we included adult hemodialysis patients receiving treatment from December 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021. For each vaccinated patient, an unvaccinated control was selected among patients registered in the same country and attending a dialysis session around the first vaccination date. Matching was based on demographics, clinical characteristics, past COVID-19 infections and a risk score representing the local background risk of infection at vaccination dates. We estimated the effectiveness of mRNA and viral-carrier COVID-19 vaccines in preventing infection and mortality rates from a time-dependent Cox regression stratified by country.ResultsIn the effectiveness analysis concerning mRNA vaccines, we observed 850 SARS-CoV-2 infections and 201 COVID-19 related deaths among the 28110 patients during a mean follow up of 44 ± 40 days. In the effectiveness analysis concerning viral-carrier vaccines, we observed 297 SARS-CoV-2 infections and 64 COVID-19 related deaths among 12888 patients during a mean follow up of 48 ± 32 days. We observed 18.5/100-patient-year and 8.5/100-patient-year fewer infections and 5.4/100-patient-year and 5.2/100-patient-year fewer COVID-19 related deaths among patients vaccinated with mRNA and viral-carrier vaccines respectively, compared to matched unvaccinated controls. Estimated vaccine effectiveness at days 15, 30, 60 and 90 after the first dose of a mRNA vaccine was: for infection, 41.3%, 54.5%, 72.6% and 83.5% and, for death, 33.1%, 55.4%, 80.1% and 91.2%. Estimated vaccine effectiveness after the first dose of a viral-carrier vaccine was: for infection, 38.3% without increasing over time and, for death, 56.6%, 75.3%, 92.0% and 97.4%.ConclusionIn this large, real-world cohort of hemodialyzed patients, mRNA and viral-carrier COVID-19 vaccines were associated with reduced COVID-19 related mortality. Additionally, we observed a strong reduction of SARS-CoV-2 infection in hemodialysis patients receiving mRNA vaccines.

OBJECTIVE The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) causes one of the most common non-viral sexually transmitted infections in humans. T. vaginalis is notorious for its inconspicuous appearance in vaginal smears. It can be missed under the microscope. METHOD In the present study, we investigate the immunoreactivity of T. vaginalis to smooth muscle actin (SMA) in the vaginal smear. RESULT T. vaginalis trophozoite and pseduocyst are immunoreactive for SMA in all of the study group cases (n = 21) and in none of the control group cases (n = 21). Thus, SMA immunostain is a sensitive method for the demonstration of T. vaginalis. Moreover, the protozoan attains a conspicuous and unique appearance. By SMA immunohistochemical stain, the apperance of T. vaginalis floated freely or located in the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells is easily identified. CONCLUSION We recommend performing SMA immunostain in every vaginal smear with clinical or pathologic suspicion of trichomoniasis.

Considering the determining role of TGFβ signaling in the tumor microenvironment (TME) on immune evasion, the inhibition of signaling is expected to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapies, especially immune checkpoint blockade (ICB), which is confirmed in preclinical data. However, successive failures in clinical translation occur at the initial stage. To provide a better understanding of TGFβ signaling within the TME and its relation to the individual immunological status, we performed a pan-cancer analysis comparing the activation of TGFβ pathway among different TMEs based on multi-omics data. Compared with non-inflamed tumors, increased TGFβ signaling activity appeared in four non-cancer cell types within TME in inflamed tumors. Significant correlations were revealed between TGFβ signaling and reliable biomarkers for ICB therapy, as well as between TGFβ signaling and HPV status. Our findings contribute to explain the inconsistency between preclinical and clinical research, and are crucial to optimizing upcoming clinical trial design and improving patient stratification for personalized prediction.

IntroductionPatients with end-stage kidney disease face a higher risk of severe outcomes from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Moreover, it is not well known to what extent potentially modifiable risk factors contribute to mortality risk. In this historical cohort study, we investigated the incidence and risk factors for 30-day mortality among hemodialysis patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection treated in the European Fresenius Medical Care NephroCare network using conventional and machine learning techniques.MethodsWe included adult hemodialysis patients with the first documented SARS-CoV-2 infection between February 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, registered in the clinical database. The index date for the analysis was the first SARS-CoV-2 suspicion date. Patients were followed for up to 30 days until April 30, 2021. Demographics, comorbidities, and various modifiable risk factors, expressed as continuous parameters and as key performance indicators (KPIs), were considered to tap multiple dimensions including hemodynamic control, nutritional state, and mineral metabolism in the 6 months before the index date. We used logistic regression (LR) and XGBoost models to assess risk factors for 30-day mortality.ResultsWe included 9,211 patients (age 65.4 ± 13.7 years, dialysis vintage 4.2 ± 3.7 years) eligible for the study. The 30-day mortality rate was 20.8%. In LR models, several potentially modifiable factors were associated with higher mortality: body mass index (BMI) 30–40 kg/m2 (OR: 1.28, CI: 1.10–1.50), single-pool Kt/V (OR off-target vs on-target: 1.19, CI: 1.02–1.38), overhydration (OR: 1.15, CI: 1.01–1.32), and both low (ConclusionBoth conventional and machine learning techniques showed that KPIs and modifiable risk factors in different dimensions ascertained 6 months before the COVID-19 suspicion date were associated with 30-day COVID-19-related mortality. Our results suggest that adequate dialysis and achieving KPI targets remain of major importance during the COVID-19 pandemic as well.

Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a viral disease that may cause interstitial pneumonia, impaired alveolar gas exchange and hypoxemia. We ascertained the time course of intradialytic arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) in MHD patients between 4 weeks pre-diagnosis and the week post-diagnosis of COVID-19. Methods We conducted a quality improvement project in confirmed COVID-19 in-center MHD patients from 11 dialysis facilities. In patients with an arterio-venous access, SaO2 was measured 1×/min during dialysis using the Crit-Line monitor (Fresenius Medical Care, Waltham, MA, USA). We extracted demographic, clinical, treatment and laboratory data, and COVID-19-related symptoms from the patients’ electronic health records. Results Intradialytic SaO2 was available in 52 patients (29 males; mean ± standard deviation age 66.5 ± 15.7 years) contributing 338 HD treatments. Mean time between onset of symptoms indicative of COVID-19 and diagnosis was 1.1 days (median 0; range 0–9). Prior to COVID-19 diagnosis the rate of HD treatments with hypoxemia, defined as treatment-level average SaO2 Conclusions In HD patients, hypoxemia may precede the onset of clinical symptoms and the diagnosis of COVID-19. A steep decline of SaO2 is associated with poor patient outcomes. Measurements of SaO2 may aid the pre-symptomatic identification of patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In hemodialysis patients, assessment of arterio-venous fistula (AVF) maturation is key to reduce the residence time of central venous catheters (CVC). We have introduced the use of central-venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2) and estimated upper-body blood flow (eUBBF) as means to monitor AVF maturation [1]. We now report CVC residence time in patients with and without ScvO2-based AVF maturation monitoring. METHOD We studied hemodialysis patients in who ScvO2-based AVF maturation monitoring was implemented within the framework of a clinical quality improvement project (QIP). ScvO2 and hematocrit were measured with Crit-Line (Fresenius Medical Care, Waltham, MA). eUBBF was computed as described previously [1]. We used time-to-event analysis to compare the CVC residence time post-AVF creation between patients who participated in the QIP (intervention group) and non-QIP patients (control group). Both groups were dialyzed in the same geography. Patients were censored at the time of death, change of dialytic modality, transplantation, lost to follow up, recovery of kidney function and end of the observation period (15 November 2021). RESULTS The intervention group comprised 44 patients [age 57 ± 17 years; 27 (61%) males]. In five patients, two AVF were created; in 34 (69%) CVC were removed. The control group comprised of 378 patients (age 59 ± 15 years, 61% males). CVC was removed in 199 (53%) control patients. In the intervention group, CVC were removed 125 days [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 102–171] after AVF creation. In the control group, this time was 236 days (95% CI: 173–404) (P CONCLUSION Compared to controls, the CVC residence time post AVF-creation was shortened significantly— by about 3.6 months—in patients who participated in a QIP that used ScvO2-baseed assessment of AVF maturation. Measurement of ScvO2 and computation of eUBBF are simple, non-invasive means to track AVF maturation, trigger timely interventions and AVF cannulation and shorten CVC residence time.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) face higher risk for severe outcomes from COVID-19 infection. Moreover, it is not well known to which extent potentially modifiable risk factors contribute to mortality risk. In this study, we investigated the incidence and risk factors for 30-day case-fatality of COVID-19 in haemodialysis patients treated in the European Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) Nephrocare network. METHOD In this historical cohort study, we included unvaccinated adult dialysis patients with a first documented SARS-CoV-2 infection between 1 February 2020 and 31 March 2021 (study period) registered in the European Clinical Database (EuCliD®). The first SARS-CoV-2 suspicion date for all documented infections was considered the index date for the analysis. Patients were followed for up to 30 days. Follow-up time was defined from the index date until the date of death, end of follow-up period or lost to follow-up, whichever occurred first. We ascertained patients’ characteristics in the 6-month period prior to index date. We used logistic regression and XGBoost to assess risk factors for 30-day mortality. RESULTS We included 9211 patients meeting the inclusion criteria for the study (Table 1). Age was 65.4 ± 13.7 years, dialysis vintage was 4.2 ± 3.7 years. In the follow up period, 1912 patients died within 30 days (20.8%, 95% confidence interval: 19.9%–21.6%). Correlates of COVID-19 related mortality are summarized in Table 2. Several potentially modifiable factors were associated with increased risk of death: patients on HD compared with online haemodiafiltration had shorter survival after presentation with COVID-19 as well as those who did not achieve the therapeutic targets for serum albumin, erythropoietin resistance index, protein catabolic rate, haemodynamic status, C-reactive protein, single-pool Kt/V, hydration status and serum sodium in the months before infection. The discrimination accuracy of prediction models developed with XGBoost was similar to that observed for main-effect logistic regression (AUC 0.69 and 0.71, respectively) suggesting that no major cross-interaction and non-linear effect could improve prediction accuracy. CONCLUSION We observed high 30-day COVID-19 related mortality among unvaccinated dialysis patients. Older patients, men and those with greater comorbidities had higher risk of death after COVID-19 infection. Derangement in potentially modifiable factors in the 6 months prior to COVID-19 infection was independently associated with increased mortality. Whether achievement of clinical therapeutic targets is associated with improved survival after COVID-19 infection is a matter of further research.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is a frequent complication of chronic hemodialysis that could lead to serious clinical outcomes and can be difficult to predict. We used machine learning (ML) and cloud computing infrastructure to develop and evaluate a model that enables real-time IDH prediction. METHOD Data were analyzed from six dialysis clinics (Fresenius Kidney Care, Waltham, MA, United States) between January 2020 and November 2020. Data included demographic, clinical, treatment and laboratory were obtained from the electronic health record. The intradialytic data such as systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), heart rate and blood flow rate were transferred in real time to Amazon Web Services (AWS, Amazon Web Services, Inc., Seattle, WA, United States) using secure Internet of Things software. Data were randomly divided into model training (80%) and testing (20%) sets. IDH was defined as SBP less than 90 mmHg. A ML tool known as an extreme gradient boosting algorithm (XGBoost) was used. Each time when an intradialytic SBP was measured, the model, which was hosted in AWS, would enable real-time prediction (in less than a minute) of patients who were at risk of IDH within the next 15–75 min. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was used to measure the model's performance. Shapley values were calculated to derive variables that were considered highly predictive of IDH. RESULTS We obtained data from 42 546 hemodialysis sessions involving 693 patients and 355 693 intradialytic observations. IDH occurred in 17% of the treatments. Our model reasonably predicted IDH, achieving an AUROC of 0.89. Top three predictors of IDH within the next 15–75 min were last intradialytic SBP, IDH rate of the last 10 treatments and mean nadir SBP of the last 10 treatments (Fig. 1). CONCLUSION Our study clearly shows the possibility of predicting IDH within the next 15–75 min using ML and cloud computing infrastructure, it suggests that the tool has the potential to assist clinicians to intervene proactively in patients at risk for IDH in real time.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS To date, no large-scale study has evaluated the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines in hemodialysis patients. We sought to evaluate the effectiveness of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 infections and death in haemodialysis patients registered in the Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) Nephrocare network. METHOD In this historical, 1:1 matched cohort study, we analysed electronic health records (EHR) of individuals receiving in-center haemodialysis therapy in FMC European dialysis clinics from 1 December 2020, to 31 May 2021 (study period). For each vaccinated patient, an unvaccinated patient was selected among patients registered in the same country and attending a dialysis session within +/–3 days from the vaccination date. Matching without replacement was based on demographics, clinical characteristics, past COVID-19 infections and a risk score representing the local (dialysis centre) background risk of infection at each vaccination date. The infection risk score was calculated from an artificial Intelligence model predicting the risk of COVID-19 outbreak in each clinic over a 2-week prediction horizon. The infection risk score was based on trends in regional COVID-19 epidemic metrics, FMC COVID-19 reporting system and clinical practice patterns. The index date was the date of the first vaccination for the vaccinated and the matching treatment date for the unvaccinated controls. To overcome violation of the proportional hazard assumption, we estimated the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines in preventing infection and mortality rates as 1—hazard ratio estimated from a time-dependent extended Cox regression stratified by country and vaccine type. RESULTS We included 44 458 patients, 22 229 vaccinated and matched 22 229 unvaccinated. Distribution of covariates was balanced across study arms after matching (Figure 1A). In the effectiveness analysis on mRNA vaccines, we observed 850 SARS-CoV-2 infections and 201 COVID19-related deaths among the 28 110 patients (14 055 vaccinated and 14 055 unvaccinated) during a mean follow up time of 44 ± 40 days. In the effectiveness analysis of viral-vector vaccines, we observed 297 SARS-CoV-2 infections and 64 COVID19-related deaths among 12 888 patients (6444 vaccinated and 6444 unvaccinated) during a mean a follow-up time of 48 ± 32 days (Figure 1B). We observed 18.5/100 patient-year and 8.5/100 patient-year fewer infections and 5.4/100 patient-year and 5.2/100 patient-year fewer COVID-19-related deaths among patients vaccinated with mRNA and viral-vector vaccines respectively, as compared to matched unvaccinated controls. The effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines concerning both symptomatic infections and COVID-related death along the follow up period is shown in Figure 2. CONCLUSION In this matched, historical cohort study, we observed a strong reduction in both SARS-CoV-2 symptomatic infection and COVID-19-related death among dialysis patients receiving an mRNA vaccine. Despite seemingly less protective against symptomatic infections, we observed similar reduction in COVID-19 mortality rate among patients receiving a viral-carrier vaccine.

In the past few decades, countless organic and inorganic pollutants caused serious environmental problems all over the world. One way to remove or degrade pollutants in the environment is to use oxidizing agents. Photocatalytic technology uses unlimited solar energy to efficiently oxidize and remove organic pollutants. Recently, perylene diimide (PDI)-based nanomaterials have been widely used in photocatalytic degradation. However, there are no reviews on the use of PDI-based composites to remove organic pollutants from contaminated water. Therefore, a review paper is needed to fully understand the current status and prospects of this field. The main purpose of this work is to highlight the recent progress of PDI-based photocatalysts in the removal of organic pollutants. In this review, the basic molecular design and properties of PDI molecules are first described. Then, strategies to improve the photocatalytic activity of PDI are summarized. The system factor and water chemistry affecting the photocatalytic activity for organic pollutant removal are also discussed. Lastly, the stability and future challenges of PDI-based composites are briefly discussed.

A piezo-photocatalytic therapy based on thermally treated natural sphalerite nanosheet (NSH700 NS) heterojunction was applied to efficiently induce intracellular ROS burst and apoptosis of cancer cells. Upon ultrasound and laser irradiation, the formation of a polarized electric field and band bending of NSH700 NSs allow the directional separation of charges both in the bulk and their interface, thereby minimizing the probability of charge recombination. The piezo-photocatalytic effect leads to an efficient catalytic performance, exhibiting high-performance superoxide radical (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radical (˙OH) generation and glutathione (GSH) depletion, which results in a intracellular ROS burst-triggered apoptosis of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo.

A series of three-dimensional Ln-based coordination frameworks were designed and synthesized. After nanolization, they show great potential as efficient and low toxic X-ray responsive radiosensitizers for the treatment of cervical cancer. The experimental data showed that these Ln-based nanoframeworks induced G0/G1 arrest mainly through the increase of the intracellular ROS level.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is considered as the next natural progression of traditional statistical techniques. Advances in analytical methods and infrastructure enable AI to be applied in health care. While AI applications are relatively common in fields like ophthalmology and cardiology, its use is scarcely reported in nephrology. We present the current status of AI in research toward kidney disease and discuss future pathways for AI. The clinical applications of AI in progression to end‐stage kidney disease and dialysis can be broadly subdivided into three main topics: (a) predicting events in the future such as mortality and hospitalization; (b) providing treatment and decision aids such as automating drug prescription; and (c) identifying patterns such as phenotypical clusters and arteriovenous fistula aneurysm. At present, the use of prediction models in treating patients with kidney disease is still in its infancy and further evidence is needed to identify its relative value. Policies and regulations need to be addressed before implementing AI solutions at the point of care in clinics. AI is not anticipated to replace the nephrologists’ medical decision‐making, but instead assist them in providing optimal personalized care for their patients.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) pollution has become an increasing issue worldwide, but little is known about its effects on ammonia-oxidizers and nitrous oxide (N2O) in the soil environment. Here, a 50-day soil microcosm experiment was conducted using low and high doses bis (2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to estimate the effect of DEHP exposure on soil N2O emissions and the nitrifying community in calcareous soil. The results showed that DEHP exposure at 10 and 100 mg kg-1 doses significantly reduced N2O by 67.5% and 73.6%, respectively, relative to the DEHP absent treatment. The microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen (MBC and MBN) were consistently and significantly decreased with DEHP exposure at 5, 22, and 50 days after incubation, especially with high-dose. The bipartite association networks showed that DEHP exposure changed the compositions of both ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) communities. Moreover, the AOA and AOB amoA gene abundances were significantly decreased by DEHP addition to the soil (P < 0.05). Random forest modeling showed that the AOB Shannon index and pH were the most important biotic and abiotic factors affecting N2O emissions in the soil with DEHP exposure, respectively. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) demonstrated that the reduction of N2O emissions due to DEHP exposure was mainly ascribed to the changes of the AOB community. The results from this study highlight the toxicity of DEHP on the ammonia oxidizers, and its mitigating effect on N2O emissions in the soil where ammonia-oxidation is largely driven by AOB.

Background Pre-dialysis systolic blood pressure (pre-HD SBP) and peridialytic SBP change have been associated with morbidity and mortality among hemodialysis (HD) patients in previous studies, but the nature of their interaction is not well understood. Methods We analyzed pre-HD SBP and peridialytic SBP change (calculated as post-HD SBP minus pre-HD SBP) between January 2001 and December 2012 in HD patients treated in US Fresenius Medical Care facilities. The baseline period was defined as Months 4–6 after HD initiation, and all-cause mortality was noted during follow-up. Only patients who survived baseline and had no missing covariates were included. Censoring events were renal transplantation, modality change or study end. We fitted a Cox proportional hazard model with a bivariate spline functions for the primary predictors (pre-HD SBP and peridialytic SBP change) with adjustment for age, gender, race, diabetes, access-type, relative interdialytic weight gain, body mass index, albumin, equilibrated normalized protein catabolic rate and ultrafiltration rate. Results A total of 172 199 patients were included. Mean age was 62.1 years, 61.6% were white and 55% were male. During a median follow-up of 25.0 months, 73 529 patients (42.7%) died. We found that a peridialytic SBP rise combined with high pre-HD SBP was associated with higher mortality. In contrast, when concurrent with low pre-HD SBP, a peridialytic SBP rise was associated with better survival. Conclusion The association of pre-HD and peridialytic SBP change with mortality is complex. Our findings call for a joint, not isolated, interpretation of pre-HD SBP and peridialytic SBP change.

Limited substrates content is a major hurdle dampening the antitumor effect of catalytic therapy. Herein, a two-dimensional interplanar heterojunction (FeOCl/FeOOH NSs) with ·OH generation under ultrasound irradiation is fabricated and utilized for catalytic cancer therapy. This interplanar heterojunction is prepared through replacing chlorine from iron oxychloride with hydroxyl. Benefiting from the longer hydroxyl bond length and enhanced affinity with water, the alkali replacement treatment integrates interplanar heterojunction synthesis and exfoliation in one step. In particular, a build-in electric field facilitated Z-scheme interplanar heterojunction is formed due to the aligning Fermi levels. The holes on the valence band of FeOCl have great ability to catalyze O2 evolution from H2O, meanwhile, the generated O2 is immediately and directly reduced to H2O2 by the electrons on the conductive band of FeOOH. The self-supplying H2O2 ability guarantees efficient ·OH generation via the Fenton-like reaction catalyzed by FeOCl/FeOOH NSs, which exhibits excellent anti-tumor performance.

Continuous cropping of cut chrysanthemum causes soil degradation and chrysanthemum quality decline, but the biotic and abiotic mechanisms behind it remain unclear. This impedes our ability to assess the true effects of continuous cropping on agricultural soil functions and our ability to repair impaired soils. Here we examined the impact of different replanting years on microbial communities and enzyme activities in rhizosphere soil of cut chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium). Our results showed that soil total nitrogen (TN) and organic carbon (SOC) contents were significantly lower in the soil with 12 years of continuous cropping (Y12) than that in the soil with 1 year of cropping (Y1). Compared with Y1, Y12 treatment decreased alkaline phosphatase and β -glucosidase by 12.1 and 24.4%, but increased the activities of soil urease and catalase by 98.2 and 34.8%, respectively. Soil bacterial populations in Y6 (continuous cropping for 6 years) and Y12 treatments decreased by 52.3 and 87.5% compared with that in Y1 treatment. Moreover, the bacterial α-diversity (Shannon index) significantly decreased by 37.3 and 57.6% over 6 and 12 years of continuous cropping, respectively. Long-term monoculture cropping shifted the bacterial community composition, with decreased abundances of dominant phyla such as Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria, but with an increase in the relative abundances of Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi, and Gemmatimonadetes. Moreover, Y6 and Y12 treatments harbored less microbial network complexity, lower bacterial taxa, and fewer linkages among bacterial taxa, relative to Y1. Soil pH, SOC, and TN were the main edaphic factors affecting soil bacterial community compositions and diversity. Overall, our results demonstrate that continuous cropping has a significant negative impact on soil microbial diversity and complexity.

The modulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels is crucial for cellular homeostasis and determination of cellular fate. A sublethal level of ROS sustains cell proliferation, differentiation and promotes tumor metastasis, while a drastic ROS burst directly induces apoptosis. Herein, surface-oxidized arsenene nanosheets (As/AsxOy NSs) with type II heterojunction are fabricated with efficient ·O2− and 1O2 production and glutathione consumption through prolonging the lifetime of photo-excited electron-hole pairs. Moreover, the portion of AsxOy with oxygen vacancies not only catalyzes a Fenton-like reaction, generating ·OH and O2 from H2O2, but also inactivates main anti-oxidants to cut off the “retreat routes” of ROS. After polydopamine (PDA) and cancer cell membrane (M) coating, the engineered As/AsxOy@PDA@M NSs serve as an intelligent theranostic platform with active tumor targeting and long-term blood circulation. Given its narrow-band-gap-enabled in vivo fluorescence imaging properties, As/AsxOy@PDA@M NSs could be applied as an imaging-guided non-invasive and real-time nanomedicine for cancer therapy., Multifunctional materials with a number of effects are important for dealing with the complex environment in cancer therapy.
