Current practices of eco-conscious photography, informed by the ongoing climate crisis and post-humanist theory, share characteristics such as collectivity, co-creation, and pro- cess orientation. By way of examples from the UK and the Nordic region, we investigate how these aspects are made (in)visible within the framework of photographic institu- tions: artist-led organizations, photographic festivals, exhibitions, and museums. We ask what implications can, or even should, eco-conscious photography have for the ways researchers, curators and institutions think about and engage with photography, both as an image and a practice.

Inuuteq Storchs fotobok Porcelain Souls (2018) baserer seg på hans foreldres dagliglivsfotografier fra Kalaallit Nunaat (Grønland) mellom slutten av 1960- og begynnelsen av 1980-tallet. Artikkelen beskriver motivene og montasjene i fotoboken og spør på bakgrunn av nymaterialistisk teori hvordan fotografiene skaper en grønlandsk verden innenfra. Videre argumenter artikkelen for at fotoboken på en særlig måte former en verden av forbindelser mellom mennesker, dyr, landskap og ting, samtidig som den skaper gjenkjennelseseffekt og følelsesmessige virkninger som påkaller en engasjert, refleksiv og empatisk betrakter. Ved å appellere til egenmobilisering og alliansebygging forbinder Porcelain Souls seg til de viktige selvstendiggjøringsprosessene som for tiden foregår i Grønland.

In this article that opens and introduces the special issue Conceptualizing the North, we present our theoretical rationale behind the conceptualization(s) of the north presented both in our article and in the issue as a whole, as well as our approach to the co-creative peer review. Through new material feminist understanding of the north, we acknowledge our kin both past and present, and unfold a spectrum of possible understandings by looking at, reading through, hearing, experiencing, and sensing the north. Ultimately, the issue unites, rather than divides, scholarly and artistic approaches that simultaneously conceptualize and analyse the north.

Artikkelen tar utgangspunkt i to kunstprosjekter som på ulike måter tematiserer europeisk utstillingskultur og nordisk kolonialisme i fortid og nåtid; «European Attraction Limited» av Lars Cuzner og Cassius Fadlabi (2011–14) og Joar Nangos «European Everything» (2017). Prosjektene diskuteres i lys av en historisk utstillingspraksis som prosjektene påkaller på en direkte eller indirekte måte, nemlig de såkalte levende etnografiske utstillinger. Hvilke mulighetsrom åpner prosjektene opp for – eller lukker?
