19. WHO? WHY? AND HOW? The contribution of sociology to the study of arts audiences

Abstract

One of the most defining features of audience research is its interdisciplinary character. This chapter seeks to reflect upon what can be perceived as the key contributions of sociology to this eclectic field. Sociology has been quite good at providing socio-economic profiles of arts audiences but also at explaining the lack of attendance via some invisible class-based mechanisms of self-exclusion. These approaches are now well-known. Yet, in the first part of the chapter, new avenues to explore are suggested, such as the barriers to more diverse audiences from an ethnic and racial point of view. In the second part, this chapter discusses two important current challenges for sociological audience research: the blurring of cultural classifications and the role of aesthetics. To conclude, the chapter puts forward ideas about how to develop a sociological approach that accounts for experiences and feelings but does so in a structured way. Abstract

In the establishment of people’s lifestyles, places, and especially cities, havebecome central arenas for display and consumption, and have become part ofthe aesthetic experience itself. These changes have affected the composition ofcultural capital, which may have then taken an urban dimension. Art museumvisitors, often associated with highbrow culture, constitute an excellent case studyto explore the links between cultural capital and place. Based on a survey of 1900visitors of the six main museums of modern and contemporary art in Belgium,this article will focus on the distribution of the audience characterized by theircultural tastes and activities across the Belgian territory (through their postcodes).It shows that visitors mainly come from areas with high and moderate densityand that the socio-demographic but also urban characteristics of their place ofresidence can be related to the way visitors’ cultural capital is composed. Yet,it also suggests that places like cities (just like museums) form meeting places,in which co-exist and interact different stories, different trajectories and, as thisarticle shows, a multiplicity of lifestyles.Keywords: Museum visitors; Pierre Bourdieu; cultural capital; audiences; Belgium.

Abstract

If the relation between social position, cultural capital and tastes is well known in the literature, many accounts of tastes do not bother to examine the aesthetic dimension of the cultural capital. Yet, people are immersed during their lives within a multiplicity of aesthetic values that are processed into aesthetic dispositions that orient their cultural choices. This article develops a theoretical model for taste-making that helps us examine the implications of why aesthetic values should be taken seriously. First these values are historically situated and hence are bound to change over time. This means that the definitions of our conceptual tools, such cultural capital and highbrow culture, need to be monitored and updated when necessary. Although they are rooted in social transformations, these values acquire a force of their own and motivate people’s cultural preferences. This matters since these values also participate in the delimitation of what is perceived as good, bad, right and wrong in society. In short, I argue that tastes are influenced by people’s social position but in a much more indirect way than has often been assumed.

29. Feeling European in a globalised world and the role of mobility, networks and consumption : A comparative approach to British exceptionalism

Abstract

This article rethinks European and global self-identification after the 2008 crash and the rise of populism and nationalism in Europe. Situating ourselves within the tradition of transactionalist theories, we run multinomial logistic regressions using data from the unusually comprehensive EUCROSS survey in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, and the UK in 2012. We show that mobility, networks, and consumption practices are related to different kinds of national, European, and global identities among our respondents. Britain is distinctive in two ways. First, network and consumption practices induce a greater variation among British citizens in affecting their supranational feelings. Second, Britain sees a clearer differentiation between the forces of globalisation and Europeanisation. We conclude that the British are not, in any obvious ways, more nationalist than other nations, but that the strength of their ex-imperial networks means that their supranational identities can take a more anti-European form.

Abstract

Relying on a quantitative survey (n = 1497) and semi-structured interviews (n = 30) conducted in the U.K., we explore British nationals’, Romanian and Turkish migrants’ attitudes of tolerance and the factors influencing them in the current socio-political context in the U.K. The quantitative data reveal the role of younger age, diverse networks, higher education, attachment to city/region and supranational identifications in more open attitudes towards diversity. The qualitative findings illustrate how diverse these three groups’ attitudes of tolerance can be and how they are affected by their position and status in the U.K. The British’ attitudes show their tolerance can reflect diverse forms of acceptance of ethnic and cultural differences but can also draw lines in terms of civic values opposing ‘those who contribute to society’ versus those who ‘live as parasites’. The Turks are in favour of diversity with the expectation of receiving more civic rights and facing less prejudice. The Romanians tend to have a more ambiguous relation to diversity given their position of stigmatised migrants in the U.K. Our analysis reveal how inclusive or exclusive people’s (sub- and supra-)national identities can be and how these frame their attitudes of tolerance.

Die Mehrzahl der politisch Engagierten allerdings sind religiös gebundene Jugendliche aus Migrantenfamilien.
