Fabrication of integrated optic polymeric components by moulding waveguide and fibre alignment grooves to a substrate in a one-step process, and subsequently filling the waveguide grooves by means of a microstructured strip-off cover which is later removed, is presented. The latest measurement results on waveguide attenuation, coupling losses owing to passive fibre-waveguide coupling and excess loss values are given.

The results of a polymeric fabrication technology for low cost, monomode, integrated optics components suitable for passive fibre-chip coupling are presented. The waveguide substrates are moulded by reaction casting from microstructured nickel moulds comprising waveguide and fibre alignment structures as well. An excess loss figure of 6 dB at 1.3 /spl mu/m wavelength was measured for a 3 cm long waveguide between two passively coupled monomode fibres.

Given a set of special restrictions applying to the optical system and by restricting the solution space to one of its subspaces, one can transform the time-dependent and the stationary wave equations of scalar optics into an equation that is structurally equivalent to the quantum-mechanical Schrodinger equation. These conditions are specified, the subspace that makes that transformation possible is constructed, and the transformation is derived. The physical meaning of the new, transformed variables is also given. An application shows how the transformation can be applied in the fields of mode coupling of forward- and backward-traveling waves. Finally, the well-known beam propagation method is discussed from this point of view.
