Long-term human-environmental interactions in naturally fragile drylands are an actual topic of geomorphological and geoarchaeological research. Furthermore, many prehistoric societies in drylands were also affected by seismic activity. The semi-arid Shiraki Plain in the tectonically active southeastern Caucasus is currently covered by steppes and largely devoid of settlements. However, numerous Late Bronze to Early Iron Age city-type fortified settlements suggest early state formation between ca. 3.2 – 2.5 ka that abruptly ended after that time. A paleolake was suggested for the lowest plain, and nearby pollen records suggest forest clearcutting of the upper altitudes under a more humid climate during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Ages. Furthermore, also an impact of earthquakes on regional Early Iron Age settlements was suggested. However, regional paleoenvironmental changes and paleoseismicity were not systematically studied so far. We combined geomorphological, sedimentological, chronological, paleoecological and hydrological modelling data to reconstruct regional Holocene paleoenvironmental changes in the Shiraki Plain, and identify possible natural and anthropogenic causes as well as possible seismic events during the Late Bronze/Early Iron Ages. Our results show a balanced to negative Early to Mid-Holocene water balance probably caused by forested upper slopes. Hence, no lake but an incipient Chernozem developed in the lowest plain. Following, Late Bronze/Early Iron Age forest clear-cutting obviously caused lake formation and the deposition of lacustrine sediments derived from intensive soil erosion. Subsequently, regional aridification obviously caused slow lake desiccation. Remains of freshwater fishes indicate that the lake potentially offered valuable ecosystem services for regional prehistoric societies even during the desiccation period. Finally, colluvial coverage of the lake sediments during the last centuries could have been linked with hydrological extremes during the Little Ice Age. Our study demonstrates that the Holocene hydrological balance of the Shiraki Plain was and is situated near a major hydrological threshold, making the landscape very sensitive to also small-scale human or natural influences with serious consequences for local societies. Furthermore, seismites in the studied sediments do not indicate an influence of earthquakes on the main and late phases of Late Bronze/Early Iron Age settlement. Altogether, our study underlines the high value of multi-disciplinary approaches to investigate long-term human-environmental interactions and paleoseismicity in drylands on millennial to centennial time scales.

The Holocene paleoclimate of the Caucasus region is rather complex and not yet well understood: while existing studies are mainly based on pollen records from high-altitude and humid lowland regions, no records are available from the semi-humid to semi-arid south-eastern Caucasian lowlands. Therefore, this study investigated compound-specific δ2H and δ13C isotopes of leaf wax biomarkers from Holocene floodplain soils in eastern Georgia. Our results show that the leaf wax δ2H signal from the paleosols mostly reflects changes in the moisture source and its isotopic composition. Depleted δ2H values before ~8?cal ka bp change towards enriched values after ~5?cal ka bp and become again depleted after ~1.6?cal ka bp. This trend could be caused by Holocene changes of the isotopic compositions of the Black and eastern Mediterranean Sea, and/or by varying contribution of both moisture sources linked with the North Atlantic Oscillation. The leaf wax δ13C signal from the paleosols directly indicates varying local water availability and drought stress. Depleted δ13C values before ~8 and after ~5?cal ka bp indicate wetter local conditions with higher water availability, whereas more enriched values during the middle Holocene (~8 until at least 5?cal ka bp) indicate drier conditions with increased drought stress. The role of climatic or human forcing for Holocene silt-clay overbank sedimentation in Central Europe has been debated for decades. To date, former studies were often limited by rather low chronological resolutions of the fluvial stratigraphies, and especially by records of human activity in the studied catchments with rather fragmentary spatial and chronological resolutions.Within the frame of an interdisciplinary geoarchaeological project carried out in the Weiße Elster catchment in Central Germany, using drill cores, geophysical measurements, sedimentological and micromorphological analyses as well as numerical dating along three transects, we build up a highly resolved record of fine-grained fluvial sedimentation along the middle river reach. Complementarily, based on archaeological data stored in local area files of the State Offices of Archaeology as well as on historical and onomastic data, we build up a catchment-wide record of human activity from the Early Neolithic period until the High Middle Ages with a so far unprecedented high spatial and chronological resolution in Central Europe. Comparing these geomorphologic and archeological/historic datasets with highly resolved paleoclimatic records allows a large step forward in understanding the intricate interplay of the Holocene geomorphodynamics with climate changes and human activity with an exceptional spatial and chronological resolution. So far, first results demonstrate a significant impact of climatic events such as the Little Ice Age on river activity that were linked with fine-grained sedimentation also after the start of intensive human activity in the catchment since the Early Neolithic period ca. 7.5 ka.

This manuscript documents geological master data and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) data of a standardized 8*8 km sampling grid of the entire Weiße Elster catchment in Central Germany. Further, the manuscript documents XRF data of a refined 4*4 km sampling grid in the proximity of Salsitz floodplain transect as well as grain size data and XRF data of Salsitz SC40 core that was recovered from the Weiße Elster floodplain. The data provide opportunities for hydro-sedimentary provenance analyses as presented in the corresponding research article by Ballasus et al. [1].

The paper investigates potentials and challenges during the interpretation of prehistoric settlement dynamics based on large archaeological datasets. Exemplarily, this is carried out using a database of 1365 Neolithic sites in the Weiße Elster river catchment in Central Germany located between the southernmost part of the Northern German Plain and the Central Uplands. The recorded sites are systematically pre-processed with regard to their chronology, functional interpretation and spatial delineation. The quality of the dataset is reviewed by analyzing site distributions with respect to field surveys and modern land use. The Random Forests machine learning algorithm is used to examine the impact of terrain covariates on the depth of sites and pottery preservation. Neolithic settlement dynamics are studied using Site Exploitation Territories, and site frequencies per century are used to compare the intensity of land use with adjacent landscapes. The results show that the main trends of the Neolithic settlement dynamics can be derived from the dataset. However, Random Forests analyses indicate poor pottery preservation in the Central Uplands and a superimposition of Neolithic sites in the southernmost part of the Northern German Plain. Throughout the Neolithic the margins between soils on loess and the Weiße Elster floodplain were continuously settled, whereas only Early and Late Neolithic land use also extended into the Central Uplands. These settlement patterns are reflected in the results of the Site Exploitation Territories analyses and explained with environmental economic factors. Similar with adjacent landscapes the Middle Neolithic site frequency is lower compared to earlier and later periods.

The prevailing view suggests that the Eemian interglacial on the European Plain was characterized by largely negligible geomorphic activity beyond the coastal areas. However, systematic geomorphological studies are sparse. Here we present a detailed reconstruction of Eemian to Early Weichselian landscape evolution in the vicinity of a small fingerlake on the northern margin of the Salzwedel Palaeolake in Lower Saxony (Germany). We apply a combination of seismics, sediment coring, pollen analysis and luminescence dating on a complex sequence of colluvial, paludal and lacustrine sediments. Results suggest two pronounced phases of geomorphic activity, directly before the onset and at the end of the Eemian period, with an intermediate period of pronounced landscape stability. The dynamic phases were largely driven by incomplete vegetation cover, but likely accentuated by fluvial incision in the neighbouring Elbe Valley. Furthermore, we discovered Neanderthal occupation at the lakeshore during Eemian pollen zone (PZ) E IV, which is chronologically in line with other known Eemian sites of central Europe. Our highly‐resolved spatio‐temporal data substantially contribute to the understanding of climate‐induced geomorphic processes throughout and directly after the last interglacial period. It helps unraveling the landscape dynamics between the coastal areas to the north and the loess belt to the south., Two phases of channel incision at the Saalian‐Eemian transition and in the late Eemian. A well-based knowledge about the former distribution of Chernozems and Phaeozems is necessary to (i) better understand the factors influencing formation and degradation of these highly fertile soils, and (ii) better explain prehistoric settlement patterns that were also determined by natural factors such as soil fertility. During this archaeopedological study carried out in Central Germany we applied sedimentological and micromorphological methods to compare soils and pedosediments from the recent Chernozem/Phaeozem region with black-coloured pedosediments buried in early Neolithic structures of the recent Luvisol area directly to the east. Relocated clay coatings and significantly lower magnetic enhancement compared to Chernozem/Phaeozem-derived material were found in most black-coloured pedosediments in the Luvisol area. This demonstrates that despite their location next to an extensive Chernozem/Phaeozem area these sediments do not originate from Chernozems or Phaeozems. Instead, their dark colour must either originate from anthropogenic input similar to black-coloured Anthrosols (“Dark Earth”), or must stem from Ah-material of former Luvisols. Consequently, may be apart from a small relatively dry and carbonate-rich Luvisol region northwest of Leipzig there was obviously no significantly larger distribution of Neolithic Chernozems and Phaeozems in this region during the past. Consequently, the regional early Neolithic settlers of the Linear Pottery Culture settled intensively also in areas outside the distribution of Chernozems and Phaeozems, and the activities of these settlers did not lead to the formation of such soils. Thus, fertile soils were obviously only one factor among probably others to explain the regional Neolithic settlement pattern. Significantly lower carbonate contents were found for the parent material of the black-coloured pedosediments in the Luvisol region compared with the parent material of Chernzems and Phaeozems. This demonstrates that the decisive factor to explain the recent and former spatial distribution of Chernozems and Phaeozems in this relatively dry area is the carbonate dynamics. Anthropogenic activity since the early Neolithic period obviously helped to preserve the naturally formed Chernozems and Phaeozems by re-carbonatization processes, but humans were not the main soil forming factor in early settled regions.

The Western Mediterranean region including the North African desert margin is considered one of the most sensitive areas to future climate changes. In order to refine long-term scenarios for hydrological and environmental responses to future climate changes in this region, it is important to improve our knowledge about past environmental responses to climatic variability at centennial to millennial timescales. During the last two decades, the recovery and compilation of Holocene records from the subtropical North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea have improved our knowledge about millennial-scale variability of the Western Mediterranean palaeoclimate. The variabilities appear to affect regional precipitation patterns and environmental systems in the Western Mediterranean, but the timescales, magnitudes and forcing mechanisms remain poorly known. To compare the changes in Holocene climate variability and geomorphological processes across temporal scales, we analysed a 19.63-m long sediment record from Lake Sidi Ali (33°03’ N, 5°00’ W, 2080 m a.s.l.) in the sub-humid Middle Atlas that spans the last 12,000 years (23 pollen-based radiocarbon dates accompanied with 210Pb results). We use calibrated XRF core scanning records with an annual to sub-decadal resolution to disentangle the complex interplay between climate changes and environmental dynamics during the Holocene. Data exploration techniques and time series analysis (Redfit, Wavelet) revealed long-term changes in lake behaviour. Three main proxy groups were identified (temperature proxies: 2ky, 1ky and 0.7ky cycles; sediment dynamic proxies: 3.5ky, 1.5ky cycles; hydrological proxies: 1.5ky, 1.2ky, 0.17ky cycles). For example, redox sensitive elements Fe and Mn show 1ky cycles and higher values in the Early Holocene and 1.5ky cycles and lower values in the Mid- to Late Holocene. All groups show specific periodicities throughout the Holocene, demonstrating their particular climatic and geomorphological dependencies. Furthermore, we discuss these periodicities relating to global and hemispheric drivers, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Innertropical Convergence Zone variability (ITCZ) and North Atlantic cold relapses (Bond events).

The Western Mediterranean region including the North African desert margin faces major environmental challenges in the backdrop of global climate change in terms of rising temperatures, a higher recurrence of drought events and a decrease in annual precipitation. As a condition to state further prospects, it is crucial to comprehend past and present hydro-climatic patterns. The Moroccan Middle Atlas is considered a transition zone between Atlantic, Mediterranean and Saharan air masses and is therefore of unprecedented interest in order to comprehend regional climate variability and to assess emerging hydrological, geomorphological and ecological impacts. Despite the growing number of limnological studies from the Middle Atlas, there still is a strong need for coupling palaeolimnological results at the sub-recent time scale with historical cartographic information, meteorological variables and underlying climatic forcing. Lake Sidi Ali (33°03’ N, 5°00’ W, 2080 m a.s.l.) provides a unique archive for understanding environmental changes throughout the 20th century. At least for the past 100 years the lake has experienced a minimum of three significant lake level changes in the order of several meters. We were able to reconstruct and quantify these alternations with the help of historical sources, topographic maps and satellite imagery. In addition, we implemented a multi-proxy analytical approach on a 145-cm long sediment record, including δ18O and δ13C isotope analysis of ostracod shells and CNS elemental analysis. A reliable age model based on 25 210Pb measurements and one radiocarbon dated cedar needle enables the linkage of sediment geochemical variations to lake level changes based on an instrumental record and historic topographic maps. We use meteorological precipitation and temperature data to evaluate the main drivers controlling these fluctuations. Furthermore, we have indications for a temporal coupling of Atlantic climate patterns (North Atlantic Oscillation, NAO; Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, AMO) with Sidi Ali lake level development.

Fluvial sediments are valuable archives of late Quaternary landscape evolution, paleoenvironmental changes and human-environmental interactions. However, given their complex and non-linear character their correct interpretation requires a good understanding of the fluvial architecture. The fluvial architecture describes the spatial arrangement and genetic interconnectedness of different types of fluvial sediments in a floodplain such as channel and overbank deposits. To properly map the different fluvial forms, their variations in composition and geometry must be understood in three dimensions. However, whereas investigations of the fluvial architecture are relatively easy in cohesive floodplain types with incised channel beds and large natural exposures, these are challenging in floodplains with buried stratigraphies where artificial exposures or corings are required.We studied three cross sections through the floodplain of the middle and upper course of the Weiße Elster River in Central Germany by means of geophysical Electrical Resistivity Measurements (ERT) and closely spaced drillings. These 2D investigations were complemented by spatial geophysical 3D measurements of Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) in the surrounding areas of the cross sections. The latter technique allows fast mapping of larger areas, and was only rarely applied to fluvial systems so far. Our novel and cost-effective combination of core drillings with multidimensional geophysical measurements allowed to systematically reconstruct the fluvial architecture of larger areas of the Weiße Elster floodplain with high resolution, and thereby demonstrates its high value for fluvial geomorphology. Furthermore, in combination with ongoing numerical datings of the fluvial sediments these investigations form the base for precise conclusions about possible climatic and human drivers of the Holocene fluvial dynamics of the Weiße Elster River.

There is an ongoing debate about the main drivers of the Holocene landscape dynamics in Central Europe, i.e. when and where these were dominantly controlled by climatic (e.g. rapid climate changes) or anthropogenic factors. Investigations of colluvial and fluvial deposits are ideal to contribute to this discussion, given that the formation of colluvial deposits in Central Europe is often controlled by human activity, whereas the formation of alluvial deposits might be more influenced by climatic fluctuations.In the forefront of a road construction intercalated colluvial and fluvial sediments with thicknesses up to 4 m were outcropped and studied during archaeological excavations led by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Conservation near Dettenheim in central Bavaria (southern Germany) in 2015. This investigated site is located next to the Fossa Carolina (Karlsgraben), a canal that was built at the end of the 8th century AD to bridge the watershed between Rhine and Danube but that was never finished. We investigated the sediments using sedimentological, archaeological and geochronological (OSL) methods. After a period with fluvial activity during the Early Holocene, the landscape was mostly stable between ca. 10 and 2.5 ka, allowing the formation of soils. Although human activities next to the investigated sites originate from the Hallstatt period, the first interruption of the stable period only occurred during the La Tène Period when fluvial and colluvial deposits were formed. Subsequently, intensive colluviation occurred during the Migration Period/Early Middle Ages, followed by intensive colluvial and fluvial deposition that started since the High Middle Ages and continues until today. Our investigations indicate that human disturbance obviously led to an intensive landscape degradation during the La Tène Period, and the landscape was subsequently much more sensitive towards human and climatic fluctuations than before.

Chernozems are among the most productive soils in the world, as they unite several favorable factors such as high fertility, favorable pH, a granular structure and high moisture retention capacity. Because of that they are typically characterized by a high agrarian value and often provide long records of intensive human land-use that reach back several millennia. However, despite their high relevance for soil sciences and geoarchaeology, many important aspects regarding chernozem formation – e.g. the question whether natural or human factors were more important - are still poorly understood (Eckmeier et al., 2007). One important drawback in this context is the lack of powerful methods to get grip on timing and rates of chernozem evolution.Recently it has been suggested that the nexus of soil mixing and soil evolution can be clarified through single-grain luminescence analyses (Reimann et al., 2017). In this study we apply the suggested protocol for the first time to two chernozem profiles in Central Germany that were buried by the Late Bronze Age burial mound Bornhöck ca. 3.8 ka ago. Our goals are (i) to test the newly developed luminescence methodology, and if successful, (ii) to date the start of chernozem formation and degradation and (iii) to quantify soil formation rates through time.First results suggest that chernozem formation of the two profiles started most likely in the early Holocene and ceased between ca. 5.5 and 5.0 ka ago. Furthermore, our data demonstrate that chernozem formation was characterized by very intensive vertical soil mixing, most likely related to intensive bioturbation. In a next step we will calculate corresponding biological soil mixing rates to further detail chernozem evolution. Already at this stage of research, however, we can confidently conclude that we are able to trace key processes of chernozem formation through the analyses of single-grain luminescence data. Hydro-sedimentary processes such as soil erosion, sediment transport, deposition, and re-deposition influence the environmental evolution of floodplains, especially in loess-covered catchments. Holocene floodplain deposits are thus a source of information on previous hydro-sedimentary dynamics and land use in the catchment. Resulting from forest clearings in the catchment, the onset of overbank silt-clay deposition is considered as an initial and significant human-induced process affecting Central European floodplain evolution and ecosystems. However, it is difficult to separate climate-related from anthropogenic forces on depositional environments, and the complexity of the hydro-sedimentary responses is part of an ongoing debate in geoscientific, ecological, and archaeological communities. This study focuses on the Central European Weise Elster river system, where humans have been influencing hydro-sedimentary processes since the Early Neolithic due to land-use-induced soil erosion predominantly in the loess-covered sub-basin of the middle course. A catchment-scale XRF element record of fluvial sediment sources combined with the geochemical characterisation of Holocene floodplain deposits aim for a better understanding of the interplay between past soil erosion, overbank deposition in the floodplain, and potential changes in sediment provenances. The Weise Elster floodplain chronosequences show a geochemical differentiation into a lower (Neolithic) and an upper (post-Neolithic) overbank silt-clay deposition. The construction of a sediment source fingerprinting mixing model yields the significant finding that the Neolithic overbank silt-clay deposition reveals a remote provenance signal from the upper catchment and less from the proximal loess-covered sub-catchment. According to a systematic archaeological data survey, the upper catchment was not permanently settled and used for agriculture in the Neolithic period. This contradicts the previous assumption that Neolithic overbank silt-clay deposition primarily originates from forest clearings and subsequent farming-induced soil erosion in the catchment. From a more general perspective, further examination of existing hypotheses concerning overbank silt-clay deposition in Central European floodplains is thus in order.

Leaf wax-derived long-chain n-alkanes are increasingly used for paleovegetation reconstructions, but have hardly been applied to fluvial sediments so far. However, such analyses could significantly enhance knowledge of the former vegetation in many regions devoid of non-fluvial sediment archives. Therefore, this exemplary study investigates potentials and challenges of n-alkane biomarker analyses in a fluvial sediment-paleosol sequence (FSPS) along the upper Alazani River in the central southern Greater Caucasus. Generally, FSPS contain two different biomarker-signals: a catchment signal in fluvial sediments, and a local in-situ signal in intercalated paleosols. This allows paleovegetation reconstructions for both catchment area and sampling site. However, several archive-related challenges exist. Concerning the catchment signal from fluvial sediments, (i) this could be biased by different vegetation zones/land use histories in subcatchments, (ii) long-term pedogenesis on the slopes or intermediate sediment storage in the catchment could have caused a time lag between biomarker formation and sedimentation, (iii) taphonomic processes could have biased the preserved n-alkane pattern, (iv) there could be petrogenically inherited or in-river produced n-alkanes, (v) the signal could be overprinted by post-sedimentary processes. Concerning the local paleosol signal, this could be biased by inherited catchment-derived biomarkers or by taphonomic processes. These factors are thoroughly discussed for the investigated FSPS. With respect to paleovegetation patterns, our investigations gave the following results: (i) Leaf waxes in fluvial sediments deposited prior to/around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition and between ca. 5 and 1.7 cal. ka BP are indicative of more deciduous trees/shrubs in the catchment compared with the other periods that were dominated by grasses/herbs. Considering a possible time lag of ca. 1–4 ka between biomarker formation and deposition, this indicates delayed Holocene reforestation in the catchment compared with western and central Europe, in agreement with regional pollen studies. The subsequent decline of deciduous trees/shrubs could be linked to human activity in the catchment during the late Holocene. (ii) Leaf waxes in floodplain paleosols indicate local grass/herb dominance throughout the Holocene, which is possibly caused by long-lasting local human activity.

Mountain regions such as the Lesser Caucasus are a focus of ongoing environmental changes. To understand their future evolution, information about their former geomorphic and environmental dynamics is required. The former fluvial dynamics derived from fluvial sediment archives can offer such insights. However, the fluvial dynamics of the Lesser Caucasus since the Eemian interglacial have not been systematically investigated so far. Thus, we have studied late Pleistocene and Holocene sediments of several rivers originating from the central Lesser Caucasus. The studied rivers show a mostly coherent record of fluvial dynamics: Minor aggradation occurred during early Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5, incision during late MIS 5 or early MIS 4, intensive silty aggradation at least during late MIS 3, incision during early MIS 2, coarse-grained aggradation probably during some millenia until ca. 19 ka, and aggradation ca. 14-13 ka. Following incision around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition, aggradation resumed around 6.0, 3.4 – 2.0 and 0.5 – 0.15 cal. ka BP. Generally, periods of aggradation, incision and stability could be linked with regional climatic or anthropogenic influences on regional landscape stability and water availability. The fluvial dynamics of the central Lesser Caucasus mostly differed even between neighbouring regions, and only in cases of significant hemispheric climatic fluctuations as around 20 ka, during the Pleistocene/Holocene transition or the Little Ice Age, were similar over-regional fluvial patterns observed. This demonstrates the individual character of river systems especially in mountain regions such as the southern Caucasus with strong geoecological gradients. Thus, to understand the former landscape dynamics of mountain landscapes, investigations of fluvial sediment archives on a regional to sub-regional scale are necessary.

Long-chain n-alkanes originate from leaf waxes of higher terrestrial plants, they are relatively resistant against physical and chemical degradation and are preserved in sediment archives for at least millennial timescales. Since their homologue patterns discriminate between vegetation forms, they were increasingly used for paleovegetation reconstructions during the last years. However, before any robust interpretation of the long-chain n-alkane patterns in sediment archives, reference samples from modern vegetation and topsoil material should be investigated at a regional scale. Apart from some temperate and tropical regions, such systematic regional studies on modern plant and topsoil material are still largely lacking.To test the potential of leaf wax-derived n-alkane patterns for paleoenvironmental studies in the semi-humid to semi-arid central southern Caucasus region, we investigated the influence of different vegetation forms on the leaf wax n-alkane signal in modern plants and topsoil material (0–5 cm) from eastern Georgia. We sampled (i) sites with grassland/herbs that included steppe, cultivated grassland and meadows, and (ii) sites that are dominated by deciduous hornbeam forests.The results show that long-chain n-alkanes originate from leaf waxes of higher terrestrial plants and that their homologue pattern allow to discriminate between different vegetation forms: n-Alkanes derived from sites with grassland/herbs are mainly dominated by C31, while n-alkanes derived from sites with deciduous trees/shrubs show high abundances of C29. Thus, long-chain n-alkanes have a great potential when used for regional paleovegetation reconstructions. Moreover, the n-alkane distributions of the topsoils do not show correlations with mean annual temperatures and precipitation along the investigated transect. As degradation of organic matter can affect the leaf wax n-alkane distribution, we further present an updated end-member model that includes our results, accounts for degradation effects and enables semi-quantitative reconstructions of past vegetation changes in the central southern Caucasus region.

The mid-Holocene climate of Northwest Arabia is characterised by a significant increase in aridity which gave rise to changes in water management strategies including sophisticated techniques at later stages. The Rasif site, situated in Northwest Saudi Arabia, reveals a Late Neolithic society with multi-roomed domestic structures (1st phase, 6th millennium BCE, before the current era). At Rasif site the sediments of an endorheic basin (qa) show a minimum in salinity during this 1st phase. The 2nd phase is characterised by a pastoral ‘Chalcolithic’ watering and ‘Chalcolithic’ burial location of the 5th millennium BCE with wells, complex trough systems, and initial, probably coexistent grave structures. During this 2nd phase the qa deposits show already a slight increase in salinity. We have evidence for a sub-surface water-rich sand layer within the qa that was exploited by shallow wells. During the subsequent 3rd phase the number of pastoral ‘Chalcolithic’ D-shaped grave structures within the qa increased, probably co-existing with deepened wells and complex trough systems. At that time the qa is covered by an almost impermeable saline clay layer. The 4th phase is characterised by a culturally yet to identify pastoral post-‘Chalcolithic’ watering location with single small troughs. The final 5th phase represents a culturally unidentified pastoral post-’Chalcolithic’ to sub-recent water harvesting location with complex dam systems, which were probably modified numerous times. The dam systems allowed to flooding the qas for several months, providing (sub-) surface water in the nowadays Northwest Arabian desert.

The southern Caucasus was intensively settled through the Neolithic period to present. Studies of late Quaternary fluvial dynamics and landscape development at the lower Shulaveris Ghele River in southeastern Georgia aid understanding of the Quaternary history of this region. Our studies show that following river aggradation to form a fan-shaped alluvial surface during the late Pleistocene, fluvial sedimentation shifted west, leaving a fan surface subject only to local fluvial and colluvial processes as well as late Neolithic settlement. At about 6 ka, the river avulsed to the east and eroded some late Neolithic settlements occupying the eastern portion of the fan. The avulsion was followed by 3 distinct episodes of aggradation at about 6 ka, 3–2 ka, and since 1.0 ka. No such aggradation is evident in the early Holocene. Regional Holocene fluvial activity in this area was apparently influenced by vegetation dynamics, possibly controlled by regional climatic and/or anthropogenic factors, and significantly differs from the eastern Mediterranean region. All late Neolithic settlements were originally built far from an active river, possibly indicating late Neolithic water management systems.

Leaf wax n-alkanes are increasingly used for quantitative reconstructions of past environmental changes. However, this is complicated in sediment archives with associated hydrological catchments since the stored n-alkanes can have different ages and origins. Direct 14C-dating of the n-alkanes has a great potential to derive independent age information for these proxies, allowing their correct paleoenvironmental interpretation. This holds also true for fluvial sediment-paleosols sequences (FSPS), where the n-alkane signal is divided into (i) a catchment signal that is deposited with fluvial sediments, and (ii) an in-situ signal from local biomass that increasingly dominates (paleo)soils with time. Therefore, age and origin of n-alkanes in FSPS are complex: In fluvial sediment layers they can be pre-aged and reworked when originating from eroded catchment soils, or originate from organic-rich sediment rocks in the catchment. In (paleo)soils, besides an inherited contribution from the catchment they were formed in-situ during pedogenesis and originate from local biomass. Depending on the different relative contributions from these sources, the n-alkane signal from an FSPS can show variable age offsets between its formation and final deposition. During this study, we applied compound-class 14C-dating to n-alkanes from a fluvial sediment-paleosol sequence (FSPS) along the upper Alazani River in eastern Georgia with Jurassic black clay shales in its upper catchment. One reaction of rivers toward allogenic triggers is the large-scale river channel migration in the form of avulsions or progressive lateral migrations (combing) that are widespread phenomena around the world during the late Quaternary. Because they potentially cause significant human and economic losses and significantly change geomorphic processes in the affected regions, a deeper knowledge about causes and rates is essential and furthermore helps to identify the dominant drivers of regional landscape evolution during different periods. One possible cause for river channel migrations is sediment-flux steering, i.e. the shift of rivers in sedimentary basins against a tectonically driven trend caused by transverse sediment discharge. During the last 30 years, sediment-flux steering has been investigated by field and experimental studies in extensional half-grabens with generally small-sized transverse catchments and/or volcaniclastic sedimentation. This study presents geomorphologic, geochronologic, and heavy mineral analyses together with complementary tectonomorphometric and earthquake data to investigate late Quaternary channel migrations of the Kura River in the southern foreland basin of the Greater Caucasus, a region where the late Quaternary landscape evolution is rather fragmentarily understood so far. Special emphasis of this study is given to the interplay between axial river flow and transverse sediment supply leading to sediment-flux steering. Large-scale migrations of the course of the Kura River during the late Quaternary reflect the interplay between tectonic processes leading to the southwestward advance of the Kura Fold-and-Thrust-Belt and climatically-triggered sediment-flux steering caused by aggradation phases of transverse rivers with comparatively large catchment areas in the Lesser Caucasus. During generally warmer periods such as the Holocene with fluvial incision and low sediment supply from the transverse rivers, the main Kura River could follow its tectonically driven trend toward the southwest. In contrast, during generally colder periods such as the upper late Pleistocene, sediment-flux steering caused by aggradation of the transverse rivers forced the main Kura River to migrate > 10 km against that tectonically induced trend toward the northeast. Apart from giving information about the main drivers of the late Quaternary landscape evolution in this part of the southern Caucasus region, this study also helps to understand the cause of a permanent threat of settlements and the loss of fertile agricultural land in the intensively labored Marneuli Depression of southern Georgia.

The site of Uichteritz (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) is a Quaternary gravel quarry hosting several Middle-Pleistocene fluvial units of the Saale River. This fluvial archive contains detailed information on (1) the timing of Middle Pleistocene fluvial aggradation and erosion periods in the region, (2) the driving forces for those alternations, as well as (3) early human presence indicated by the presence of Lower Paleolithic stone artefacts. Here we establish a luminescence-based numerical chronology at Uichteritz. Additionally, geophysical, sedimentological and micromorphological analyses were applied to obtain information on depositional and post-depositional processes of the fluvial sequence. Our results point to several fluvial aggradation periods between ca. 420 and 180 ka. A first fluvial unit was deposited during the late Elsterian period, followed by formation of a Luvisol during MIS 11 and its fluvial reworking at the transition from MIS 11 to MIS 10 and/or during early MIS 10. These MIS 10/11 deposits, with an age of about 400 ka, also contain reworked Lower Paleolithic stone artefacts that document the initial appearance of humans in northwestern central Europe during MIS 11. After a period of fluvial incision during MIS 10, which was accompanied by a change in the course of the Saale River, several stacked fluvial sequences of the Saalian Main Terrace (SMT) formed between MIS 8 and MIS 6, mainly during cold climatic periods. Our age estimates confirm the correlation of the Elsterian ice advances with MIS 12, and the Saalian ice advances with later MIS 6.

This paper describes dune sand-paleosol-sequences of four pits in Northern Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). The elaborated stratigraphy is reinforced with luminescence dating to provide a first chronological estimation. Apart from a Holocene colluvial layer, the sequence spans the period from ca. 50 ka to ca. 280 ka. Paleosols were formed during glacial times and point to a standstill in sand supply. The isotopic composition of terrestrial gastropod shells retrieved from soil horizons reflects fluctuations in humidity conditions during different edaphic phases. Because eolian sands were deposited during glacial times as well, it is inferred that soil development was simply caused by a decrease in sand supply independent of climate change. Our geomorphic, geochronological and isotopic results are discussed considering different perspectives of dune sand-paleosol intercalation and more broadly, soil-forming conditions in general.

In order to obtain information about landscape activity and stability during the Late Quaternary in the Transcaucasian region, fluvial sediments of the lower Algeti River in SE-Georgia were studied by means of geomorphologic, sedimentologic and geochronologic methods. These investigations show that sediments aggraded by the Late Pleistocene braided Algeti River were strongly incised around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition, and subsequently a small-scale pattern of diachronous fluvial terraces deposited by the now meandering river developed in the new valley during the Holocene. Prior to ca. 3 cal. ka BP, active phases of river channel aggradation and overbank sedimentation about 6 cal. ka BP and 3.4–3.2 cal. ka BP can be linked with climate-driven vegetation changes, i.e. stronger fluvial dynamics with sedimentation occurred during more arid and colder periods whereas the Caucasian Holocene climate optimum between 6 and 3.4 cal. ka BP was characterized by stable geomorphologic conditions. After 3 cal. ka BP, strongly increased human impact documented by former pollen studies is reflected by the fluvial dynamics as well, i.e. an activity phase of strong overbank sedimentation 2.7–2.1 cal. ka BP occurred during a period when forests in the Lesser Caucasus were burnt down. Two subsequent activity phases with fluvial sedimentation can be linked with historic events that probably both influenced vegetation distribution of the region, i.e. a period of flourishing of Georgia during the Middle Age and a time of large-scale destruction of the country due to a Persian invasion at the end of the 18th century AD, respectively. Thus, whereas no influence of tectonic events or fluctuations of the Caspian Sea level on the fluvial dynamics could be detected, SE-Georgia shows its fragile character with respect to climate- and human driven vegetation-changes similar to other semi-arid landscapes of the Mediterranean region.

The Sahara is the world's largest dust source with significant impacts on trans-Atlantic terrestrial and large-scale marine ecosystems. Contested views about a gradual or abrupt onset of Saharan aridity at the end of the African Humid Period dominate the current scientific debate about the Holocene Saharan desiccation. In this study, we present a 19.63 m sediment core sequence from Lake Sidi Ali (Middle Atlas, Morocco) at the North African desert margin. We reconstruct the interaction between Saharan dust supply and Western Mediterranean hydro-climatic variability during the last 12,000 yr based on analyses of lithogenic grain-sizes, XRF geochemistry and stable isotopes of ostracod shells. A robust chronological model based on AMS 14C dated pollen concentrates supports our multi-proxy study. At orbital-scale there is an overall increase in southern dust supply from the Early Holocene to the Late Holocene, but our Northern Saharan dust record indicates that a gradual Saharan desiccation was interrupted by multiple abrupt dust increases before the ‘southern dust mode‘ was finally established at 4.7 cal ka BP. The Sidi Ali record features millennial peaks in Saharan dust increase at about 11.1, 10.2, 9.4, 8.2, 7.3, 6.6, 6.0, and 5.0 cal ka BP. Early Holocene Saharan dust peaks coincide with Western Mediterranean winter rain minima and North Atlantic cooling events. In contrast, Late Holocene dust peaks correspond mostly with prevailing positive phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation. By comparing with other North African records, we suggest that increases in Northern Saharan dust supply do not solely indicate sub-regional to regional aridity in Mediterranean Northwest Africa but might reflect aridity at a trans-Saharan scale. In particular, our findings support major bimillennial phases of trans-Saharan aridity at 10.2, 8.2, 6.0 and 4.2 cal ka BP. Long-chain n-alkanes became increasingly used for paleoenvironmental studies during the last years as they have the great potential to reconstruct past changes in vegetation and climate. They mostly originate from leaf waxes of higher terrestrial plants, are relatively resistant against physical and chemical degradation and can thus serve as valuable biomarkers that are preserved in various sedimentary archives for at least millennial timescales. However, before any robust interpretation of the long-chain n-alkane patterns in sedimentary archives, reference samples from modern vegetation and topsoil material should be investigated at a regional scale. Apart from Central and South-Eastern Europe, such systematic regional studies on modern plant and topsoil material are still largely lacking. To test the potential of leaf wax derived n-alkane patterns for paleoenvironmental studies in the semi-humid to semi-arid southern Caucasus region, we investigated the influence of different vegetation types on the leaf wax n-alkane signal in modern plants and topsoil material (0–5 cm) from eastern Georgia. We sampled (i) sites with grassland that included steppe, cultivated grassland and meadows, and (ii) sites that are dominated by deciduous hornbeam forests. The n-alkane results show distinct and systematic differences between samples from sites with the different vegetation types: n-alkanes derived from sites with grassland are mainly dominated by C31, while n-alkanes derived from sites with deciduous trees show high abundances of C29. Thus, chain-length ratios allow to discriminate between these two different vegetation types and have a great potential when used for regional paleoenvironmental reconstructions. As degradation of organic matter can affect the leaf wax n-alkane distribution, we further present an updated end-member model that includes our results, accounts for degradation effects and enables semi-quantitative reconstruc-tions of past vegetation changes in the southern Caucasus region.

In Zauschwitz (Western Saxonian loess area, Central Germany), a ca. 7 m thick loesspalaeosol sequence underlain by fluvial gravels and sands was investigated in order to study regional palaeoenvironmental changes during the late Weichselian Pleniglacial. The lithostratigraphic classification of the loess-palaeosol sequence was combined with polymineral fine grain luminescence dating using the pIRIR290 approach, and correlated with similar loess-palaeosol-sequences from Central Saxony. Doing so, we obtained information about a climatic shift from more humid to more arid conditions during the late Pleniglacial, due to changes in the landscape dynamics of the study area: At ca. 30 ka, braided river floodplain accumulation of the nearby Weisse Elster river was followed by a phase of decreased fluvial activity, allowing initial loess deposition on top of the fluvial sands and gravels. This period was characterized by cold but still quite humid conditions, as indicated by reworked loess and the occurrence of several tundra gley soils. Subsequently, a cold and more arid period of dust accumulation followed after ca. 22 ka. Intensive anthropogenic activity almost totally redeposited the Holocene black soil, demonstrating the attractiveness of the fertile loess area for early human settlement.

The significance of Saharan dust deposits for ecosystems has been demonstrated in several studies, showing its influence on pedogenesis and soil chemical and physical parameters by the addition of nutrient elements. This contribution is especially important for volcanic soils poor in plant-available phosphorous as those of the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). Thus, this study investigates the spatial distribution of Saharan dust on the island, and determines its influence on soil properties and thus on the ecosystem of the island. Since silt-sized quartz is not autochthonously formed on the island, it served as a reliable indicator for Saharan dust. Quartz was identified and quantified using X-ray diffractometry. The influence of Saharan dust additions on soil properties was assessed by texture analyses and analyses of plant-available phosphorous, an element strongly limiting plant-growth on the island due to its fixation in the structure of amorphous volcanic clay. A luff–lee-effect revealed significant influence on dust distribution, whereas small geomorphologic structures as hollows and mounds hardly influenced the dust distribution pattern. A positive correlation of quartz content with the proportion of the grain size fraction 0.5–10 μm demonstrates an influence on soil physical properties, apparently influencing available water capacity. Furthermore, our data suggest an increasing content of plant-available phosphorous with a rising amount of Saharan dust in the soils. Thus, the input of Saharan dust influences soil fertility of La Palma and is an important factor regarding the fragility of the La Palma ecosystems.

The sedimentological and geochemical properties of a 7·47 m long laminated sequence from hypersaline Lake Yoa in northern Chad have been investigated, representing a unique, continuous 6100 year long continental record of climate and environmental change in the eastern Central Sahara. These data were used to reconstruct the Mid to Late Holocene history of this currently hyper-arid region, in order to address the question of whether the Mid Holocene environmental transition from a humid to a dry Sahara was progressive or abrupt. This study involved a suite of analyses, including petrographic and scanning electron microscope examination of thin sections, X-ray diffraction, X-radiography, granulometry, loss on ignition and magnetic susceptibility. The potential of micro-X-ray fluorescence core scanning was tested at very high resolution. Detailed microscopic investigation revealed the sedimentary processes responsible for the formation of the fine laminations, identified the season during which they were formed, and confirmed their annually rhythmic nature. High-resolution X-ray fluorescence core scanning allowed the distinction of each individual lamination over the entire record, opening new perspectives for the study of finely laminated sediment sequences. Geochemical and mineralogical data reveal that, due to decreasing monsoon rainfall combined with continuous and strong evaporation, the hydrologically open and fresh Mid Holocene Lake Yoa slowly evolved into the present-day hypersaline brine depleted in calcium, which has existed for about the past 1050 years. During the oldest part of the investigated period, Lake Yoa probably contained a permanently stratified lower water column that was nevertheless disrupted relatively frequently by mixing events. Deep-water anoxia became more stable because of increased salinity-driven density stratification. In parallel, the sediment grain-size proxies record a progressive increase of aeolian input in the course of the last 6100 years. Altogether, all geochemical and sedimentological indicators point to a progressive drying of the eastern Central Sahara, strengthening previous conclusions based on palaeoecological indicators.

1) As we are working in the same and similar settings on the eastern Canary Islands and also endeavouring to establish reliable ages based on luminescence dating, we followed the numerical ages published in this paper with great interest. Since besides a wellestablished stratigraphy it is always preferable to have a robust time control, we should be happy to accept these new ages from the Rosa Negra quarry at this time (Fig. 4). However, it is essential to have some detailed explanations (methods) on the dating procedure applied by the authors. In particular, we would like to know on what material luminescence dating was conducted: Was it IRSL on feldspar, or was it OSL on quartz? Were fine or coarse grains used? Were single or multiple aliquot protocols applied? How were dose

International audience; We investigated mineral aerosol (dust) deposition in the Aral Sea with intention to understand the variability of dust in central Asia and its implications for atmospheric circulation change in the late Holocene. Using an 11.12-m sediment core of the lake, we calculated bulk sediment fluxes at high time-resolution and analyzed grain-size distributions of detrital sediments. A refined age-depth model was established by combined methods of radiocarbon dating and archeological evidence. Besides, a principal component analysis (PCA) of grain-size fractions and elements (Fe, Ti, K, Ca, Sr) was used to assess the potential processes controlling detrital inputs. The results suggest that two processes are mainly relevant for the clastic input as the medium silt fractions and Ti, Fe and K are positively correlated with Component 1 (Cl), and the fine size fractions (

Two desert loess–paleosol sequences in sediment traps were investigated using (pedo-) stratigraphy, sedimentology, soil mineralogy and IRSL dating. So far we cannot recognise significant IRSL age-underestimates from the polymineral fine-grain fraction of our samples. We establish a first palaeoclimatic sequence spanning the past ca 200 ka which can be compared to data from other Canary Islands and surrounding areas, including terrestrial and deep sea records. More humid phases on Lanzarote are apparently triggered by Milankovich forcing, but the climate remained semi-arid to arid all over the past 200 ka. The onset of human occupation of the island during a slightly moister period is bracketed between 5 and 10 ka, based on the occurrence of archaeosediments containing bones of ovicaprid. This is the first proof of much earlier occupation than witnessed so far from archaeological records. The early subsidiary economy had a strong impact on soil stability and landscape shaping of the island.

The hydrology of western Central Asia is highly sensitive to climatic perturbations. In order to understand its long-term variability and to infer linkages between precipitation and atmospheric and oceanic systems, we conducted a thorough sedimentary and geochemical study on a composite core retrieved in lake Son Kul (central Kyrgyzstan). A multi-proxy approach was conducted on lake sediments based on grain size analyses, magnetic susceptibility, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN) and carbon and oxygen isotope analyses on bulk and biogenic materials (ostracoda and molluscs shells) at a resolution equivalent to ca 40 years, aiming to characterise the sequence of palaeolimnological changes in Son Kul. As indicated by delta O-18 record of bulk carbonates, mainly consisting of aragonite, the Holocene hydrological balance was negative during most of time, suggesting an excess of evaporation (E) over precipitation (P). Limnological conditions fluctuated rapidly before 5000 cal yr BP indicating significant changes in regional hydrology and climate. In particular, the long-term negative hydrological balance was impeded by several short stages with marked increase of precipitation, lasting several decades to a few centuries (e.g., 8300-8200, 6900-6700, 6300-6100, 5500-5400, 5300-5200 and 3100 -3000 cal yr BP). Precipitation changes as inferred from 8180 data are also documented by increased minerogenic detritus and higher TOC. We propose that the seasonal pattern of precipitation varied transiently in western Central Asia during the Holocene, although evaporation changes may also account for the rapid changes observed in delta O-18 data. In the north of the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), two palaeosols from different sites were baked by overlying lava flows. Using red thermoluminescence (RTL) dating, late Middle Pleistocene ages were obtained, both varying around 170 ka thus indicating the simultaneity of the volcanic events. Blue thermoluminescence dating using different measuring techniques of the same sample material from one site (the Mala dune) yields somewhat lower ages, varying around 125 ka. However, this result is not in contradiction with the RTL age since anomalous fading was detected, expected to cause a significant underestimation of blue thermoluminescence results. Electron spin resonance dating from land snails overlying the lava flow yielded ages between 204 and 123 ka. Although this dispersion is rather large for material originating from the same stratigraphic horizon, it has to be taken into account that the amount of sample material and thus signal intensity was very low. Furthermore, small measured sample quantities are very vulnerable to dosimetric inhomogenities in the surrounding material, being a further source of uncertainty. Thus, these ESR ages bracketing the RTL age are a further support for a late Middle Pleistocene age of the lava flow. The Middle Pleistocene RTL ages of about 170 ka fill a conspicuous gap in the volcanic chronostratigraphy of Lanzarote, demonstrating that post-erosional volcanism on Lanzarote was obviously more continuous during the Middle and Late Quaternary than known before. Thus, these results demonstrate the potential of RTL and ESR dating to improve the timing of the Quaternary volcanism of the Canary Islands.

The eastern part of the Republic of Georgia encompasses an intramontane basin situated between the Greater Caucasus in the north and the Lower Caucasus in the south, both showing a high tectonic activity. The climate is continental, separated from the Mediterranean climate by the Surami Mountain Range with a maximal altitude of about 1000 m. Due to its proximity to the “Fertile Crescent”, Neolithic activity started quite early here, beginning at the latest from 7.5 ka. Fluvial sediments outcropped at several terrace levels along different rivers (Kura, Algeti, Khrami, Shulaverichai) in the so-called Marneuli-depression south of Tbilisi are investigated in order to reveal the pattern of fluvial activity during the Late Pleistocene and the Holocene. Sedimentological and geochronological investigations of these sediments are complemented by geomorphic mapping of the distribution of fluvial terrace levels. A comparison of the fluvial dynamics of the rivers in the Marneuli depression with that from other rivers in eastern Georgia to be investigated (e.g. the Alazani river) aims to trace the pattern of fluvial activity in the larger region, in order to unravel climatic, anthropogenic and tectonic influences during the Late Quaternary.
