This work introduces the concept of Variable Size Game Theory (VSGT), in which the number of players in a game is a strategic decision made by the players themselves. We start by discussing the main examples in game theory: dominance, coexistence, and coordination. We show that the same set of pay-offs can result in coordination-like or coexistence-like games depending on the strategic decision of each player type. We also solve an inverse problem to find a $d$-player game that reproduces the same fixation pattern of the VSGT. In the sequel, we consider a game involving prosocial and antisocial players, i.e., individuals who tend to play with large groups and small groups, respectively. In this game, a certain task should be performed, that will benefit one of the participants at the expense of the other players. We show that individuals able to gather large groups to perform the task may prevail, even if this task is costly, providing a possible scenario for the evolution of eusociality. The next example shows that different strategies regarding game size may lead to spontaneous separation of different types, a possible scenario for speciation without physical separation (sympatric speciation). In the last example, we generalize to three types of populations from the previous analysis and study compartmental epidemic models: in particular, we recast the SIRS model into the VSGT framework: Susceptibles play 2-player games, while Infectious and Removed play a 1-player game. The SIRS epidemic model is then obtained as the replicator equation of the VSGT. We finish with possible applications of VSGT to be addressed in the future., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures

This article investigates the emergence of phase synchronization in a network of randomly connected neurons by chemical synapses. The study uses the classic Hodgkin-Huxley model to simulate the neuronal dynamics under the action of a train of Poissonian spikes. In such a scenario, we observed the emergence of irregular spikes for a specific range of conductances, and also that the phase synchronization of the neurons is reached when the external current is strong enough to induce spiking activity but without overcoming the coupling current. Conversely, if the external current assumes very high values, then an opposite effect is observed, i.e. the prevention of the network synchronization. We explain such behaviors considering different mechanisms involved in the system, such as incoherence, minimization of currents, and stochastic effects from the Poissonian spikes. Furthermore, we present some numerical simulations where the stimulation of only a fraction of neurons, for instance, can induce phase synchronization in the non-stimulated fraction of the network, besides cases in which for larger coupling values it is possible to propagate the spiking activity in the network when considering stimulation over only one neuron., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We study the time delay in the synaptic conductance for suppression of spike synchronisation in a random network of Hodgkin Huxley neurons coupled by means of chemical synapses. In the first part, we examine in detail how the time delay acts over the network during the synchronised and desynchronised neuronal activities. We observe a relation between the neuronal dynamics and the syaptic conductance distributions. We find parameter values in which the time delay has high effectiveness in promoting the suppression of spike synchronisation. In the second part, we analyse how the delayed neuronal networks react when pulsed inputs with different profiles (periodic, random, and mixed) are applied on the neurons. We show the main parameters responsible for inducing or not synchronous neuronal oscillations in delayed networks.

The changeover from normal to super diffusion in time dependent billiards is explained analytically. The unlimited energy growth for an ensemble of bouncing particles in time dependent billiards is obtained by means of a two dimensional mapping of the first and second moments of the velocity distribution function. We prove that for low initial velocities the mean velocity of the ensemble grows with exponent ~1/2 of the number of collisions with the border, therefore exhibiting normal diffusion. Eventually, this regime changes to a faster growth characterized by an exponent ~1 corresponding to super diffusion. For larger initial velocities, the temporary symmetry in the diffusion of velocities explains an initial plateau of the average velocity.

Statistical properties for the recurrence of particles in an oval billiard with a hole in the boundary are discussed. The hole is allowed to move in the boundary under two different types of motion: (i) counterclockwise periodic circulation with a fixed step length and; (ii) random movement around the boundary. After injecting an ensemble of particles through the hole we show that the surviving probability of the particles without recurring - without escaping - from the billiard is described by an exponential law and that the slope of the decay is proportional to the relative size of the hole. Since the phase space of the system exhibits islands of stability we show that there are preferred regions of escaping in the polar angle, hence given a partial answer to an open problem: {\it Where to place a hole in order to maximize or minimize a suitable defined measure of escaping}.
