Abstract

PING 2019 is organized with the support of funds for specific university research project SVK1-2019-002. A structural study as well as the determination of σ0.2 compression yield stress at high temperatures have been performed on the Fe3Al-based iron aluminide doped by Nb (5 at. %) and C (1.5 at.%). The carbon occurrence leads to the formation of three-phase structure. Fe3Al matrix, niobium carbides and (Fe,Al)2Nb Laves phase were observed in the structure of investigated alloys. Precipitates were inhomogeneously distributed in as cast state alloy. The annealing at 1000°C for 50 hours leads to more homogenously distribution of secondary phase particles and also to refinement of grain size. The strengthening mechanism of material at high temperatures was detected as a combination of strengthening by incoherent precipitates (NbC and Laves phase) and a solid solution hardening by Nb atoms. Effect of two reinforcing mechanisms together with homogeneously precipitate’s distribution increase the values of σ0.2 compression yield stress about 50 MPa in whole measured temperature range (600 – 800 °C) in comparison to similar intermetallic’s system Fe-Al-Zr-C. Phase composition of the alloy was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). The electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) was used for phase verification and grain size visualization.

20. Comparison of iron aluminide Fe3Al with armour steel in ballistic behaviour

Abstract

Intermetallic aluminide compounds possess several potential advantages compared to alloyed steels, like enhanced oxidation resistance, lower density and the omittance of critical raw materials. Iron aluminides, compared to other transition metal–aluminides of TM3-Al type, although having a higher density compared to titan-aluminides, have a lower density compared to nickel-aluminides, but also a higher ductility than both alternatives, making this material potentially effective in ballistic protection application. Density–wise, this material may be a worthy alternative to armour steels, which was the aim of this study. Two materials, Fe3Al intermetallic compound (F3A-C) and Armox 500 armour steel were ballistically tested against tungsten-carbide (WC) armour-piercing ammunition, in accordance with STANAG 4569. After ballistic testing, microhardness and metallographic testing were performed, revealing differences in strain hardening, crack propagation mode and exit hole morphology. F3A-C ballistic resistance is similar to that of armour steel, in spite of the lower tensile and impact mechanical properties, relying on a considerably higher strain hardening rate, thermal properties and a lower density.

Abstract

Někteří Slováci se v průběhu 18. století rozhodli opustit svojí domovinu a vydat se hledat nový a lepší domov. Většina z nich se z jihu Slovenska a severu Maďarska vydala dále na jih do tehdejších Dolních Uher, kde jejich potomci pobývají dodnes. V Srbsku, ve Vojvodině, nalezneme velmi aktivní spolky pečující o tradiční slovenskou kulturu. Jedná se o celosvětově nejaktivnější a nejpočetnější skupinu Slováků žijících v zahraničí, o něco méně početné spolky jsou i v severním Chorvatsku kolem města Ilok. Nejméně početná je skupina Slováků žijících v Černé Hoře.

Abstract

Abstract: The research of the high temperature mechanical properties of Fe28Al4Cr with additives Ce, TiB2 and Zr is completed using as additive Zr combined with TiB2. The alloy was prepared using vacuum induction melting and rolling at 1200 °C and finally applying annealing at 1150°C for 2 hours. During alloying the majority of Ti in TiB2 was replaced by Zr. The majority of (Zr,Ti)B2 particles is situated along the grain boundaries. Fine ZrC carbide particles appear mainly on dislocations. Tensile and creep tests were performed at 600, 650, 700, 800 and 900 °C. Transmission electron microscopy showed precipitation of fine particles on dislocations, subgrain boundaries and also in the matrix. Coarsening of these particles during creep at 800 °C and 900 °C takes place. The high temperature mechanical properties of alloys with additives Ce, TiB2, Zr and Zr combined with TiB2 are compared. The Larson–Miller parameter is used to describe the creep strength. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The creep behaviour of the intermetallic Fe–28Al–3Cr alloy with Ce additive was investigated at temperatures from 500 to 900 °C. The effect of the thermal processing was studied. The properties (e.g. time to rupture, minimum creep rate (MCR), the ultimate deformation) were improved by introducing small particles originating in the temperature interval from 600 to 800 °C. Abstract

The effect of phase composition and morphology on high-temperature strength in the compression of Fe-Al-Si-based iron aluminides manufactured by casting was investigated. The structure and high-temperature strength in the compression of three alloys-Fe28Al5Si, Fe28Al5Si2Mo, and Fe28Al5Si2Ti-were studied. Long-term (at 800 °C for 100 h) annealing was performed for the achievement of structural stability. The phase composition and grain size of alloys were primarily described by means of scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive analysis and Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD). The phase composition was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effect of Mo and Ti addition as well as the effect of long-term annealing on high-temperature yield stress in compression were investigated. Both additives-Mo and Ti-affected the yield stress values positively. Long-term annealing of Fe28Al5Si-X iron aluminide alloyed with Mo and Ti deteriorates yield stress values slightly due to grain coarsening.
