Abstract

As one of the most common and important defects, O vacancy has a great influence on β-Ga2O3, which has not been studied systematically with appropriate functional approximation. Herein, the effects of O vacancies on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of bulk β-Ga2O3 were systemically investigated by using the shell DFT-1/2 method. For intrinsic β-Ga2O3, the calculated bandgap is 4.77 eV, which corresponds well to the experimental value. Band structures and density of states (DOS) prove that O vacancy will introduce a deeper donor level in the bandgap. Charge density distribution demonstrates the covalent properties of the Ga–O bond and reveals the charge transfer near the O vacancy. Phonon dispersion spectra prove the dynamical instability of the O vacancy systems. The formation energy curves show that the +2 charge state is energetically favorable at low Fermi energy, while the neutral defect is the most stable one at high Fermi energy. The transition energy of ɛ(+2/0) also proves that the O vacancy acts as a deep donor. The introduction of O defects introduces extra peaks in the lower energy regions of the absorption and electron energy loss spectra, and the peak positions are in good agreement with the previous experimental results. This study gives a point of view on the effects of O vacancies on β-Ga2O3 and proves the advantages of shell DFT-1/2 calculation in ultrawide bandgap semiconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. MiR-140 protects against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury by regulating NF-κB pathway.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-140 on rats with myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) through regulating the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 36 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups, including sham group (n=12), model group (n=12) and miR-140 mimics group (n=12). In sham group, only thoracotomy was performed without ischemia-reperfusion. In model group, the MIRI model was first established, followed by intervention using normal saline. In miR-140 mimics group, the MIRI model was first established as well, followed by intervention using miR-140 mimics. The content of serum creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was detected, and the morphology of myocardial tissues was observed via hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. Meanwhile, the relative protein expression of NF-κB was determined using Western blotting. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was conducted to evaluate the expression of miR-140. The content of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was determined via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Furthermore, cell apoptosis was detected via terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. RESULTS: The content of serum CK and LDH rose significantly in model group and miR-140 mimics group when compared with sham group (p<0.05). However, it declined significantly in miR140 mimics group compared with model group (p<0.05). HE staining results showed that there were no obvious abnormalities in the morphology of myocardial tissues in sham group. However, there were injury and inflammatory infiltration in myocardial tissues in model group. Meanwhile, the structure and morphology of myocardial tissues were improved in miR-140 mimics group compared with those in model group. Western blotting revealed that the relative protein expression of NF-κB was evidently higher in model group and miR-140 mimics group than sham group (p<0.05). However, it was remarkably lower in miR-140 mimics group than that in model group (p<0.05). QPCR results demonstrated that the relative expression of miR140 in model group and miR-140 mimics group was obviously lower than sham group (p<0.05). However, a markedly higher expression of miR-140 was observed in miR-140 mimics group than model group (p<0.05). ELISA results indicated that model group and miR-140 mimics group had remarkably higher content of IL-1β and TNF-α than sham group (p<0.05). However, miR-140 mimics group had remarkably lower content of IL-1β and TNF-α than model group (p<0.05). TUNEL assay indicated that the apoptosis rate increased obviously in model group and miR-140 mimics group compared with sham group (p<0.05). However, it declined significantly in miR-140 mimics group compared with model group (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MiR-140 suppresses inflammation and apoptosis in myocardial tissues of MIRI rats through inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway, thereby exerting a cardioprotective effect. Abstract

We report on doping and undoping experiments of terahertz (THz) emitting intrinsic Josephson junction stacks, where the change in charge carrier concentration is achieved by heavy current injection. The experiments were performed on stand-alone structures fabricated from a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta single crystal near optimal doping. The stacks contained about 930 intrinsic Josephson junctions. On purpose, the doping and undoping experiments were performed over only a modest range of charge carrier concentrations, changing the critical temperature of the stack by less than 1 K. We show that both undoping and doping is feasible also for the large intrinsic Josephson junction stacks used for THz generation. Even moderate changes in doping introduce large changes in the THz emission properties of the stacks. The highest emission power was achieved after doping a pristine sample.

Abstract

Abstract: The ability to recover from drought stress after re‐watering is an important feature that will enable plants to cope with the predicted increase in episodic drought. The effects of pre‐drought and re‐watering conditions on leaf spectral properties and their relationships with the biochemical processes that underlie the recovery from pre‐drought conditions should be better understood. The reflectance spectra, 10 spectral reflectance indices (SRIs) and biochemical characteristics of maize (Zea mays) leaves were monitored 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the initiation of soil drought stress during two successive cycles of drought and re‐watering periods. The leaf reflectance of the two inbred maize lines increased under the drought stress, especially in the visible spectral range. In addition, an obvious recovery of the leaf reflectance was only observed in the first re‐watering period, and its value remained higher than that of the control plants during the second recovery period. A recovery lag in the pigment contents was also observed during the second cycle. The recovery variations in the pattern and magnitude of the SRIs and the total contents of C, N and P that were measured in response to the re‐watering during both cycles were diverse and complex; both full and partial recoveries were observed. The SRIs representing different physiological attributes of plant growth, including the water index, red edge position, photochemical reflectance index and near‐infrared reflectance at 800 nm, showed strong linear relationships (P < 0.01 or 0.05) with the growth and biochemical traits across the successive drought and re‐watering cycles. The results suggest that maize plants can adjust their leaf reflectance properties and employ growth and biochemical strategies to adapt to cyclic drought stress and recover from drought stress after re‐watering. Abstract

This study aimed to develop a thermo/pH-sensitive hydrogel for co-delivery of paclitaxel (PTX) and epirubicin (EPI) in tumor combination chemotherapy. First, pluronic F127/reduced graphene oxide (PF127/RGO) nanocomposites were prepared through the simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide and assembly of PF127 and RGO. Then, PTX was loaded onto PF127/RGO (PTX@PF127/RGO) by π-π stacking and hydrophobic interaction. Second, graphene double network hydrogels (GDL) were prepared using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and polyacrylic acid as crosslinked network and PTX@PF127/RGO as an additive. The structure and properties were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), swelling rate tests (SR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Lastly, the hydrophilic drug EPI was encapsulated in the GDL matrix (EPI@PTX@GDL), which showed thermo/pH-dependent releasing behavior. Cell viability experiments demonstrated that the EPI@PTX@GDL showed a superior cytotoxicity against MCF-7 cells than single drug-loaded forms, whereas the blank GDL and RGO displayed no obvious cytotoxicity. Abstract

Oxynitride phosphor powders comprising of CaSi2O2N2 doped with Tb3+ were successfully synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The experimentally determined photoluminescence (PL) properties of the produced phosphors meet the requirements of 2D/3D plasma display panels (PDPs). In particular, under the excitation of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, emission peaks corresponding to the D-5(3) -> F-7(J)) (J=6, 5, 4, 3) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J) (J=6, 5, 4, 3) transitions of Tb3+ ions were recorded. Monitoring the D-5(4) -> F-7(5) emission of Tb3+ at 545 nm, the excitation bands were assigned to the host-related absorption as well as the 4f-5d (fd) and the 4f-4f (ff) transitions of Tb3+. Abstract

A facile method was designed for the successful synthesis of highly stable spherical (oxo)nitridosilicate phosphors with excellent monodispersity, high coating density and improved luminescent properties. The novel h-BN-encapsulated spherical core shell SiO2@Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ red emitting phosphors were successfully synthesized by an interfacial reaction mechanism followed by a subsequent gas reduction and nitridation process. A thin film of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was formed in situ during the synthesis process, leading to core shell SiO@Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphors with a perfectly spherical shape, narrow size distribution, non-agglomeration and a smooth surface. The particles consist of three layers: the outer h-BN film; the middle Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor shell and the amorphous SiO2 core. Under UV and blue light excitation, the SiO2@Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphors show intense red emission due to the 4f65d 4f7 transition of the Eu2+ ions. 31. The effects of fluxes on AlN:Eu2+ blue phosphors synthesized by a carbothermal reduction method

Abstract

Different fluxes had been used in the preparation of AlN:Eu21 blue phosphors by the carbothermal reduction method. The influence of these fluxes on the phase composition, crystallinity, particle size, and photoluminescence (PL) of the produced phosphors was investigated. X-ray diffraction and microstructure characterizations showed that both CaF2 and BaF2 were excellent nitridation promoters for the synthesis of AlN:Eu21 phosphors, because pure and highly crystallized AlN was obtained with 3 wt% fluxes. The use of CaF2 flux resulted in phosphors which featured a very weak blue shift emission due to lattice distortion and lattice imperfection caused by the incorporation of Ca into the AlN host, according to the results of IR spectra, decay curves, and the changes in lattice parameters. In comparison with phosphors produced without the use of fluxes, the use of BaF2 flux resulted in phosphors with higher PL intensity by a factor of 2.4, which were produced at lower soaking temperature and shorter soaking time. Abstract

Abstract: High-resolution Fourier-transform spectra of the D2S molecule in the regions of polyads of interacting vibrational states v =3/2, 2, 5/2, 3 and 7/2 (v = v 1 + v 2/2+ v 3) were recorded for the first time with a Bruker IFS 120 Fourier-transform interferometer and analysed. A global fit of all currently available rotation–vibration energies has been made for 22 vibrational states of the D2S molecule. The resulting set of 231 parameters reproduces all the initial experimental data (about 3670 vibration–rotation energies which correspond to more than 9700 ro-vibrational transitions with J max =25) with accuracies close to the experimental uncertainties. Abstract

Abstract: The absorption spectrum of the natural sample of nitrous oxide has been recorded at Doppler limited resolution with a Fourier-transform spectrometer in the spectral range 5000–10000cm−1. Ten cold bands (8Σ−Σ and 2Σ−Π), thirteen hot bands (11Π−Π, Σ−Σ, and Δ−Δ) of 14N2 16O and the 3ν 3 band of 14N15N16O have been newly detected. The uncertainty of the line position determination is estimated to be about 0.005cm−1 for unblended lines. The assignment of the spectrum has been done with the help of the prediction performed within the framework of the polyad model of effective Hamiltonian. The spectroscopic parameters G v , B v , D v , H v , and q v have been determined for all newly detected bands. The line intensities of 13 weak bands have been measured. The uncertainty of the obtained line intensity values varies from 7 to 13%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
