8. High-entropy sulfurization enables efficient non-noble metal-based NiCoFeCuS electrocatalyst for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction

Abstract

Highly active and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts have become essential to replace commercial electrocatalysts that rely on rare noble metals. High-entropy sulfide nanomaterials, characterized by abundant randomly distributed elements and inherent stability, possess significant potential for applications. However, challenges such as uneven composition, partial oxidation, or imprecise synthesis control still remain in the materials preparation. Herein, a simple and effective two-step hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize NiCoFeCuS nanoparticles supported on foam nickel substrate. With the catalytic active sites produced by electron density redistribution in high-entropy and sulfurization, NiCoFeCuS exhibits excellent alkaline OER performance, with an overpotential of 261 mV and a Tafel slope of 57.97 mV dec−1at the current density of 10 mA cm−2, which is only 88% of commercial RuO2without any noble metals.

Abstract

The Hippo pathway plays crucial roles in governing various biological processes during tumorigenesis and metastasis. Within this pathway, upstream signaling stimuli activate a core kinase cascade, involving MST1/2 and LATS1/2, that subsequently phosphorylates and inhibits the transcriptional co-activators YAP and its paralog TAZ. This inhibition modulates the transcriptional regulation of downstream target genes, impacting cell proliferation, migration, and death. Despite the acknowledged significance of protein kinases in the Hippo pathway, the regulatory influence of protein phosphatases remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted the first gain-of-functional screen for protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) regulating the Hippo pathway. Utilizing a LATS kinase biosensor (LATS-BS), a YAP/TAZ activity reporter (STBS-Luc), and a comprehensive PTP library, we identified numerous novel PTPs that play regulatory roles in the Hippo pathway. Subsequent experiments validated PTPN12, a master regulator of oncogenic receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), as a previously unrecognized negative regulator of the Hippo pathway effectors, oncogenic YAP/TAZ, influencing breast cancer cell proliferation and migration. In summary, our findings offer valuable insights into the roles of PTPs in the Hippo signaling pathway, significantly contributing to our understanding of breast cancer biology and potential therapeutic strategies. Abstract

Platinum-group metals are the most promising catalysts choice for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their good catalytic stability and optimum Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption and desorption. However, high cost restricts their industrial application. To lower price, the most commonly used method is to reduce noble metals’ dosage. Herein, iridium (Ir) and its diphosphide (IrP2) based on one-dimensional carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are easily fabricated by electrospinning and following calcination, and then are applied as efficient catalysts for HER. Both Ir-CNFs and IrP2-CNFs show excellent HER performances with overpotentials of 22 mV and 19 mV under the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline medium, respectively. The experimental results are further proved by density function theory (DFT) calculations, in which IrP2 (2 0 0) shows better HER kinetics than Ir (1 1 1) with lower water adsorption and hydrogen evolution energies. This work presents a simple method to prepare Ir-CNFs and IrP2-CNFs and provides a new feasibility for design and synthesis of efficient and stable HER catalysts.

Abstract

Transition metal compounds, as promising non-precious metal-based materials for hydrogen evolution reaction, have been limited by metal particles agglomeration. It is challenging to achieve ultra-dispersion of transition nano-metal catalysts, which would enlarge surface areas and reinforce physical stability. In this study, self-supported, highly dispersed NiMo nanobelts have been prepared by electrospinning and in-situ vacuum reduction. The unique belt structure with large active sites could facilitate the electron transfer and exhibits sufficient mechanical strength. The NiMo nanobelts show excellent HER activity, which achieve 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH only required 62 mV overpotential, as well as great cycling stability.
