Foam fractionation is a green and economical primary separation technique and it has excellent application prospect in the field of food industry. However, it is difficult to simultaneously obtain the high values of enrichment ratio and recovery percentage in a batch operation of foam fractionation due to the opposite effects of operating parameters on interfacial adsorption and foam drainage. In order to solve this problem, multiple process intensification strategies of foam fractionation are developed. In this work, the current studies on the intensification methods of interfacial adsorption and foam drainage were firstly reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are analyzed. Subsequently, the research progress of foam fractionation in the separation of proteins, enzymes, saponins, polyphenols and biological preservatives are summarized. Based on the literature review and problem analysis, three future research respects are proposed to promote the industrial application of foam fractionation: Developing new methods which would simultaneously improve interfacial adsorption and foam drainage, designing new collectors with strong binding specificity for non-surface-active materials and good reusability, and inhibiting protein denaturation during desorption process.

Abstract Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a primary diabetic complication ascribed to the pathological changes in renal microvessels. This study investigated the nuclear factor erythroid 2‐related factor 2 (Nrf2)/Kelch ECH associating protein (Keap1)/antioxidant response element (ARE) signaling pathway impact of chitooligosaccharides (COS) with a certain degree of polymerization (DP) on DN mouse models and high glucose‐damaged human kidney 2 (HK‐2) cells. Tubular NiTi is a promising candidate refrigerant for eco-friendly elastocaloric cooling, but its severe functional degradation during cyclic phase transition (PT) is a key concern in the technology development. Here, plastic deformation of 6.7% is applied to NiTi tube by overstress training under 1900 MPa for five cycles to improve the cyclic PT stability without losing cooling efficiency. It is found that after 106 compressive cycles under 1000 MPa, the overstress-trained NiTi tube exhibits small residual strain (0.5%), stable adiabatic temperature drop (ΔT = 11K) and improved coefficient of performance (COP = 55), showing high functional stability and good cooling performance. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations show that the microstructure of the overstress-trained NiTi tube consists of 5–10 nm sized austenite (B2) and martensite (B19′) nanodomains with near-saturated dislocation density (ρ ≈ 5.153 × 1016 m−2). Such dislocation-enriched nanostructure effectively suppresses further formation and motion of dislocation during subsequent cyclic compression, thereby significantly enhancing the cyclic stability of the NiTi tube. The residual B19′ nanodomains and dense dislocations change the PT mode from nucleation-growth of the B19′ phase to direct growth of residual B19′ nanodomains, thereby reducing the dissipation of the PT process and increasing the COP of the NiTi tube. Our study provides an economic and effective method for to enhance the cyclic stability of bulk NiTi tubes for solid-state refrigeration.

Abstract Background LACS (long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase) genes are widespread in organisms and have multiple functions in plants, especially in lipid metabolism. However, the origin and evolutionary dynamics of the LACS gene family remain largely unknown. Results Here, we identified 1785 LACS genes in the genomes of 166 diverse plant species and identified the clades (I, II, III, IV, V, VI) of six clades for the LACS gene family of green plants through phylogenetic analysis. Based on the evolutionary history of plant lineages, we found differences in the origins of different clades, with Clade IV originating from chlorophytes and representing the origin of LACS genes in green plants. The structural characteristics of different clades indicate that clade IV is relatively independent, while the relationships between clades (I, II, III) and clades (V, VI) are closer. Dispersed duplication (DSD) and transposed duplication (TRD) are the main forces driving the evolution of plant LACS genes. Network clustering analysis further grouped all LACS genes into six main clusters, with genes within each cluster showing significant co-linearity. Ka/Ks results suggest that LACS family genes underwent purifying selection during evolution. We analyzed the phylogenetic relationships and characteristics of six clades of the LACS gene family to explain the origin, evolutionary history, and phylogenetic relationships of different clades and proposed a hypothetical evolutionary model for the LACS family of genes in plants. Conclusions Our research provides genome-wide insights into the evolutionary history of the LACS gene family in green plants. These insights lay an important foundation for comprehensive functional characterization in future research.

Abstract Background Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can undergo inadequate osteogenesis or excessive adipogenesis as they age due to changes in the bone microenvironment, ultimately resulting in decreased bone density and elevated risk of fractures in senile osteoporosis. This study aims to investigate the effects of osteocyte senescence on the bone microenvironment and its influence on BMSCs during aging. Results Primary osteocytes were isolated from 2-month-old and 16-month-old mice to obtain young osteocyte-derived extracellular vesicles (YO-EVs) and senescent osteocyte-derived EVs (SO-EVs), respectively. YO-EVs were found to significantly increase alkaline phosphatase activity, mineralization deposition, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes in BMSCs, while SO-EVs promoted BMSC adipogenesis. Neither YO-EVs nor SO-EVs exerted an effect on the osteoclastogenesis of primary macrophages/monocytes. Our constructed transgenic mice, designed to trace osteocyte-derived EV distribution, revealed abundant osteocyte-derived EVs embedded in the bone matrix. Moreover, mature osteoclasts were found to release osteocyte-derived EVs from bone slices, playing a pivotal role in regulating the functions of the surrounding culture medium. Following intravenous injection into young and elderly mouse models, YO-EVs demonstrated a significant enhancement of bone mass and biomechanical strength compared to SO-EVs. Immunostaining of bone sections revealed that YO-EV treatment augmented the number of osteoblasts on the bone surface, while SO-EV treatment promoted adipocyte formation in the bone marrow. Proteomics analysis of YO-EVs and SO-EVs showed that tropomyosin-1 (TPM1) was enriched in YO-EVs, which increased the matrix stiffness of BMSCs, consequently promoting osteogenesis. Specifically, the siRNA-mediated depletion of Tpm1 eliminated pro-osteogenic activity of YO-EVs both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions Our findings suggested that YO-EVs played a crucial role in maintaining the balance between bone resorption and formation, and their pro-osteogenic activity declining with aging. Therefore, YO-EVs and the delivered TPM1 hold potential as therapeutic targets for senile osteoporosis. Graphical abstract

Aging increases the risks of various diseases and the vulnerability to death. Cellular senescence is a hallmark of aging that contributes greatly to aging and aging-related diseases. This study demonstrates that extracellular vesicles from human urine-derived stem cells (USC-EVs) efficiently inhibit cellular senescence in vitro and in vivo. The intravenous injection of USC-EVs improves cognitive function, increases physical fitness and bone quality, and alleviates aging-related structural changes in different organs of senescence-accelerated mice and natural aging mice. The anti-aging effects of USC-EVs are not obviously affected by the USC donors’ ages, genders, or health status. Proteomic analysis reveals that USC-EVs are enriched with plasminogen activator urokinase (PLAU) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP1). These two proteins contribute importantly to the anti-senescent effects of USC-EVs associated with the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases, cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (P16INK4a), and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A (P21cip1). These findings suggest a great potential of autologous USC-EVs as a promising anti-aging agent by transferring PLAU and TIMP1 proteins.

The actual DOM in Chaohu Lake was used to feed cyanobacterial to explore the changes of microbial communities, fluorescence spectral characteristics and molecular composition of DOM during the degradation of cyanobacteria. It is found that cyanobacterial grow periodically depending on the concentration of nutrients with the decreasing concentration of nutrient salts. Both Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria have strong correlation with algae growth. Bacteroidetes has a positive correlation with algae growth, relationship on the contrary, Actinobacteria has a negative relationship. The humus-like components in the four groups are similar, but the protein-like component (C3) shows periodic changes with the life process of cyanobacteria. The average molecular weight of each sample detected by Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer increases slightly and the DOM increase aromaticity in the end. In this study, the molecule of Carboxyl-Rich Alicyclic Molecules (CRAM) is difficult to be done by photodegradation and biodegradation in the early periods, but some molecules of CRAM are selectively degraded by microorganisms in the final period. The growth of cyanobacterial lead to increasing the concentration of protein-like and carbohydrate-like molecule of DOM in the water. In the final stage, the molecule group of CHO disappear significantly and the molecule group of heteroatomic group increase. Abstract Objective To assess the prevalence and factors associated with early cognitive impairment in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients and to describe short‐term recovery trajectories among ICH patients with early cognitive impairment. Methods We prospectively enrolled ICH patients without baseline dementia in our institutions. Cognitive function was assessed using mini‐mental state examination (MMSE), and functional outcome was evaluated at discharge, 3, and 6 months after symptoms onset using the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). We used multinomial logistic regression models to investigate potential risk factors and generalized linear models to analyze the functional outcome data. Results Out of 181 patients with ICH, 167 were included in the final analysis. Early cognitive impairment occurred in 60.48% of patients with ICH. Abstract Background Gut microbiota alterations have been implicated in sepsis and related infectious diseases, but the causal relationship and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Methods We evaluated the association between gut microbiota composition and sepsis using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis based on published genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to validate the robustness of the results. Reverse MR analysis and integration of GWAS and expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) data were performed to identify potential genes and therapeutic targets. Results Our analysis identified 11 causal bacterial taxa associated with sepsis, with increased abundance of six taxa showing positive causal relationships. Ten taxa had causal effects on the 28-day survival outcome of septic patients, with increased abundance of six taxa showing positive associations. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of these associations. Reverse MR analysis did not provide evidence of reverse causality. Integration of GWAS and eQTL data revealed 76 genes passing the summary data-based Mendelian randomization (SMR) test. Differential expression of these genes was observed between sepsis patients and healthy individuals. These genes represent potential therapeutic targets for sepsis. Molecular docking analysis predicted potential drug-target interactions, further supporting their therapeutic potential. Conclusion Our study provides insights for the development of personalized treatment strategies for sepsis and offers preliminary candidate targets and drugs for future drug development.

Abstract The Gasdermin protein is a membrane disruptor that can mediate immunogenic pyroptosis and elicit anti‐tumor immune function. However, cancer cells downregulate Gasdermin and develop membrane repair mechanisms to resist pyroptosis. Therefore, an artificial membrane disruptor (AMD) that can directly mediate membrane rupture in pyroptosis‐deficient cells and induce antitumor immune responses in a controllable manner will be valuable in preclinical and clinical research. A micron‐scale Ce6‐based AMD that can directly induce plasma membrane rupture (PMR) in gasdermin‐deficient tumor cells is established. Micron‐scale AMDs localize Ce6 specifically to the plasma membrane without labeling other organelles. Compared to free Ce6 molecules, the use of AMDs results in a higher degree of specificity for the plasma membrane. Due to this specificity, AMDs mediate fast and irreversible PMR under 660 nm red light. Furthermore, the AMDs are capable of inducing programmed cell death and lytic cell death in a catalytic manner, demonstrating that the amount of Ce6 used by AMDs is only one‐fifth of that used by Ce6 alone when inducing 80% of cancer cell death. In vivo, the AMDs show specificity for tumor targeting and penetration, suggesting that light‐driven programmed cell death is specific to tumors. AMDs are applied to antitumor therapy in gasdermin‐deficient tumors, resulting in efficient tumor elimination with minimal damage to major organs when combined with anti‐PD‐1 therapy. Tumor regression is correlated with PMR‐mediated inflammation and T‐cell‐based immune responses. This study provides new insights for designing bioinspired membrane disruptors for PMR and mediating anti‐tumor immunotherapy. Additionally, AMD is a dependable tool for examining the immunogenicity of PMR both in vitro and in vivo.

Objectives: FGFR4-variant and wild-type colorectal cancer (CRC) organoids were developed to investigate the effects of FGFR4-targeted drugs, including FGFR4-IN and erdafitinib, on CRC and their possible molecular mechanism. Methods: Clinical CRC tissues were collected, seven CRC organoids were developed, and whole exome sequencing (WES) was performed. CRC organoids were cultured and organoid drug sensitivity studies were conducted. Finally, an FGFR4-variant (no wild-type) CRC patient-derived orthotopic xenograft mouse model was developed. Western blot measured ERK/AKT/STAT3 pathway-related protein levels. Results: WES results revealed the presence of FGFR4-variants in 5 of the 7 CRC organoids. The structural organization and integrity of organoids were significantly altered under the influence of targeted drugs (FGFR4-IN-1 and erdafitinib). The effects of FGFR4 targeted drugs were not selective for FGFR4 genotypes. FGFR4-IN-1 and erdafitinib significantly reduced the growth, diameter, and Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) activity of organoids. Furthermore, chemotherapeutic drugs, including 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin, inhibited FGFR4-variant and wild-type CRC organoid activity. Moreover, the tumor volume of mice was significantly reduced at week 6, and p-ERK1/2, p-AKT, and p-STAT3 levels were down-regulated following FGFR4-IN-1 and erdafitinib treatment. Conclusions: FGFR4-targeted and chemotherapeutic drugs inhibited the activity of FGFR4-variant and wild-type CRC organoids, and targeted drugs were more effective than chemotherapeutic drugs at the same concentration. Additionally, FGFR4 inhibitors hindered tumorigenesis in FGFR4-variant CRC organoids through ERK1/2, AKT, and STAT3 pathways. However, no wild-type control was tested in this experiment, which need further confirmation in the next study.

Background: The prevalence of breast cancer (BRCA), which is common among women, is on the rise. This study applied network pharmacology to explore the potential mechanism of action of herba sarcandrae in BRCA and construct a prognostic signature composed of inflammation-related genes. Methods: The active ingredients of herba sarcandrae were screened using the SymMap, TCMID, and TCMSP platforms, and the molecular targets were determined in the UniProt database. The “drug-active compound-potential target” network was established with Cytoscape 3.7.2. The molecular targets were subjected to disease ontology, gene ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes (KEGG) analyses. AutoDock software was used for molecular docking. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to inflammation were obtained from the BRCA Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. In the training cohort, the univariate Cox regression model was applied to preliminarily screen prognostic genes. A multigene signature was built by the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression model, followed by validation through Kaplan‒Meier, Cox, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. Results: Forty-one active compounds were identified, and 265 therapeutic targets for herba sarcandrae were predicted. GO enrichment results revealed significant enrichment of biological processes, such as response to xenobiotic stimuli, response to nutrient levels, and response to lipopolysaccharide. KEGG analysis revealed significant enrichment of pathways such as AGE-RAGE and chemical carcinogenesis receptor activation signaling pathways. In addition, the herbs Marc-Andre and rutin were shown to mediate BRCA cell proliferation and apoptosis via the interferon regulatory factor 1 (IRF1)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) pathway. Sixteen inflammatory signatures, including BST2, GPR132, IL12B, IL18, IL1R1, IL2RB, IRF1, and others, were constructed, and the risk score was found to be a strong independent prognostic factor for overall survival in BRCA patients. The 16-inflammation signature was associated with several clinical features (age, clinical stage, T, and N classifications) and could reflect immune cell infiltration in tumor microenvironments with different immune cells. Conclusions: Herba sarcandrae and rutin were shown to mediate BRCA cell proliferation and apoptosis via the IRF1/STAT3/PD-L1 pathway, and the 16-member inflammatory signature might be a novel biomarker for predicting BRCA patient prognosis, providing more accurate guidance for clinical treatment prognosis evaluation and having important reference value for individualized treatment selection.

Abstract Endothelial cells (ECs) and bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) play crucial roles in supporting hematopoiesis and hematopoietic regeneration. However, whether ECs are a source of BMSCs remains unclear. Here, we evaluate the contribution of endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition to BMSC generation in postnatal mice. Single-cell RNA sequencing identifies ECs expressing BMSC markers Prrx1 and Lepr; however, this could not be validated using Prrx1-Cre and Lepr-Cre transgenic mice. Additionally, only a minority of BMSCs are marked by EC lineage tracing models using Cdh5-rtTA-tetO-Cre or Tek-CreERT2. Moreover, Cdh5 + BMSCs and Tek + BMSCs show distinct spatial distributions and characteristic mesenchymal markers, suggestive of their origination from different progenitors rather than CDH5+ TEK+ ECs. Furthermore, myeloablation induced by 5-fluorouracil treatment does not increase Cdh5 + BMSCs. Our findings indicate that ECs hardly convert to BMSCs during homeostasis and myeloablation-induced hematopoietic regeneration, highlighting the importance of using appropriate genetic models and conducting careful data interpretation in studies concerning endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition.

Abstract Chitobiose (COS2) efficiently lowers lipids in vivo and facilitates butyric acid enrichment during human fecal fermentation. However, whether COS2 can interact with butyric acid to generate a hypolipidemic effect remains unclear. This study examined the hypolipidemic mechanism of COS2 involving butyric acid, which could alleviate non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results revealed that COS2 administration modulated the β-oxidation pathway in the liver and restructured the short chain fatty acids in the fecal of ob/ob−/− mice. Moreover, the hypolipidemic effect of COS2 and its specific accumulated metabolite butyric acid was verified in sodium oleate-induced HepG2 cells. Butyric acid was more effective to reverse lipid accumulation and up-regulate β-oxidation pathway at lower concentrations. Furthermore, structural analysis suggested that butyric acid formed hydrogen bonds with key residues in hydrophilic ligand binding domains (LBDs) of PPARα and activated the transcriptional activity of the receptor. Therefore, the potential mechanism behind the lipid-lowering effect of COS2 in vivo involved restoring hepatic lipid disorders via butyric acid accumulation and liver–gut axis signaling. Rabi oscillations express a phenomenon of periodic conversion between two wave states in a coupled system. The finding of Rabi oscillation has led to important applications in many different disciplines. Despite great progress, it is still unknown whether the Rabi oscillating state can be excited in the framework of the higher-order vector vortex regime. Here, we demonstrate in theory that the higher-order vector vortex light beams can be Rabi oscillating during evolution in an optical coupling system. This new classical oscillating state of light is characterized by a topologically shaped wavefront and coupled with spatially varying polarization. The vector vortex state exhibits a harmonic oscillatory property in the resonant and nonresonant conditions but differs greatly in Rabi oscillating frequencies. During Rabi oscillation, the complex state maintains its topology and intensity profile, while its intrinsic polarization pattern varies adiabatically in a periodic manner. We present an interpretation of the Rabi oscillation of the higher-order wave states in terms of the coupled-mode theory. Furthermore, we reveal a symmetry-protected transition between two Rabi oscillating modes, driven by a slowly varying phase mismatch. This Rabi transition has not been reported in either quantum mechanics or any other physical setting. This work advances the research of Rabi oscillation into the higher-order regime, and it may lead to novel applications in classical and quantum optics.

Abstract Background The cytochrome P450 (CYP) superfamily is the largest enzyme metabolism family in plants identified to date, and it is involved in many biological processes, including secondary metabolite biosynthesis, hormone metabolism and stress resistance. However, the P450 gene superfamily has not been well studied in pear (Pyrus spp.). Results Here, the comprehensive identification and a comparative analysis of P450 superfamily members were conducted in cultivated and wild pear genomes. In total, 338, 299 and 419 P450 genes were identified in Chinese white pear, European pear and the wild pear, respectively. Based on the phylogenetic analyses, pear P450 genes were divided into ten clans, comprising 48 families. The motif and gene structure analyses further supported this classification. The expansion of the pear P450 gene family was attributed to whole-genome and single-gene duplication events. Several P450 gene clusters were detected, which have resulted from tandem and proximal duplications. Purifying selection was the major force imposed on the long-term evolution of P450 genes. Gene dosage balance, subfunctionalization and neofunctionalization jointly drove the retention and functional diversification of P450 gene pairs. Based on the association analysis between transcriptome expression profiles and flavonoid content during fruit development, three candidate genes were identified as being closely associated with the flavonoid biosynthesis, and the expression of one gene was further verified using qRT-PCR and its function was validated through transient transformation in pear fruit. Conclusions The study results provide insights into the evolution and biological functions of P450 genes in pear.

Ecological intensification of agriculture is crucial for sustainable food production, yet the complex soil-microbial interactions in integrated farming systems remain poorly understood. This five-year study compared a Rice-Loach-Shrimp (RLS) integrated system with conventional Rice Monoculture (RM) using advanced multivariate techniques, including correlation analysis, Principal Component Analysis, Random Forest modeling, and Structural Equation Modeling. The RLS system exhibited higher values for key soil health indicators compared to RM, although the overall correlation patterns were similar. Stronger correlations among soil organic matter, enzyme activities, and microbial populations were observed in RLS, suggesting a more tightly coupled soil ecosystem. Available phosphorus and soil organic matter were identified as primary drivers of microbial community structure. The RLS system showed a slightly higher mean pH and weaker correlations between pH and other indicators compared to RM, indicating potential altered biogeochemical processes. Complex cascading effects among soil properties, enzyme activities, and microbial populations were revealed in RLS. These soil health benefits persisted throughout the study period, demonstrating the potential of RLS as an effective ecological intensification strategy for sustainable rice production.

Health care accounts for 9–10% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. Strategies for monitoring these emissions at the hospital level are needed to decarbonize the sector. However, data collection to estimate emissions is challenging. We explored the potential of gradient boosting machines (GBM) to impute missing data on resource consumption in the 2020 survey of a consortium of 283 hospitals participating in Practice Greenhealth. GBM imputed missing values for selected variables in order to predict electricity use (R2 = 0.82) and beef consumption (R2 = 0.82) and anesthetic gas desflurane use (R2 = 0.51), using administrative and financial data readily available for most hospitals. After imputing missing consumption data, estimated GHG emissions associated with these three examples totaled over 3 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions (MTCO2e). Specifically, electricity consumption had the largest total carbon footprint (2.4 MTCO2e), followed by beef (0.6 million MTCO2e) and desflurane consumption (0.03 million MTCO2e) across the 283 hospitals. The approach should be applicable to other sources of hospital GHGs in order to estimate total emissions of individual hospitals and to refine survey questions to help develop better intervention strategies.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop a deep learning system to identify and differentiate the metastatic cervical lymph nodes (CLNs) of thyroid cancer.MethodsFrom January 2014 to December 2020, 3059 consecutive patients with suspected with metastatic CLNs of thyroid cancer were retrospectively enrolled in this study. All CLNs were confirmed by fine needle aspiration. The patients were randomly divided into the training (1228 benign and 1284 metastatic CLNs) and test (307 benign and 240 metastatic CLNs) groups. Grayscale ultrasonic images were used to develop and test the performance of the Y-Net deep learning model. We used the Y-Net network model to segment and differentiate the lymph nodes. The Dice coefficient was used to evaluate the segmentation efficiency. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) were used to evaluate the classification efficiency.ResultsIn the test set, the median Dice coefficient was 0.832. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV were 57.25%, 87.08%, 72.03%, 81.87%, and 66.67%, respectively. We also used the Y-Net classified branch to evaluate the classification efficiency of the LNs ultrasonic images. The classification branch model had sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV of 84.78%, 80.23%, 82.45%, 79.35%, and 85.61%, respectively. For the original ultrasonic reports, the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, PPV, and NPV were 95.14%, 34.3%, 64.66%, 59.02%, 87.71%, respectively. The Y-Net model yielded better accuracy than the original ultrasonic reports.ConclusionThe Y-Net model can be useful in assisting sonographers to improve the accuracy of the classification of ultrasound images of metastatic CLNs.

The accelerated urbanization process has caused problems such as habitat loss, isolation, and habitat quality decline, resulting in a sharp reduction in the richness and abundance of urban species. Constructing suitable habitat environmental conditions is the most direct and effective way to protect animals. In urban environment, habitat construction can be achieved by integrating species protection and landscape planning, which is also an important manifestation of biodiversity conservation at the ecosystem level. Understanding how to incorporate animal habitats into city plan and design is critical and urban planners would benefit from a review that holistically describes the steps and methods of animal habitat constructions. We conducted a review to highlight the animal habitats space resources and network structures. We synthesized the findings of research studies in the last 20 years to illuminate the investigation, assessment, planning and management of animal habitats. As habitat degradation and fragmentation in anthropogenic environments, our findings suggest city planners should consider ecological background investigation, habitat suitability assessment, habitat planning strategies and animal habitat management as four key steps of mitigation to alleviate these impacts. This study will provide a useful reference to improve animal survival quality and communication. Through this study, the consolidated research can aid in sustainable development and innovation to promote the ecological function of urban green space and the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals.

Abstract Lytic cell death triggers an antitumour immune response. However, cancer cells evade lytic cell death by several mechanisms. Moreover, a prolonged and uncontrolled immune response conversely leads to T-cell exhaustion. Therefore, an oncolytic system capable of eliciting an immune response by killing cancer cells in a controlled manner is needed. Here, we establish a micro-scale cytotoxic T-cell-inspired oncolytic system (TIOs) to precisely lyse cancer cells by NIR-light-controlled lipid peroxidation. Our TIOs present antigen-based cell recognition, tumour-targeting and catalytic cell-lysis ability; thus, the TIOs induce oncolysis in vivo. We apply TIOs to preclinical cancer models, showing anti-tumor activity with negligible side-effects. Tumour regression is correlated with a T-cell based anti-tumour immune response and TIOs also improve responses to anti-PD-1 therapy or STING activation. Our study provides insights to design oncolytic systems for antitumour immunity. Moreover, activation of STING can reverse T-cell exhaustion in oncolysis.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) results from continuous and heavy alcohol consumption. The current treatment strategy for ALD is based on alcohol withdrawal coupled with antioxidant drug intervention, which is a long process with poor efficacy and low patient compliance. Alcohol-induced CYP2E1 upregulation has been demonstrated as a key regulator of ALD, but CYP2E1 knockdown in humans was impractical, and pharmacological inhibition of CYP2E1 by a clinically relevant approach for treating ALD was not shown. In this study, we developed a RNAi therapeutics delivered by lipid nanoparticle, and treated mice fed on Lieber-DeCarli ethanol liquid diet weekly for up to 12 weeks. This RNAi-based inhibition of Cyp2e1 expression reduced reactive oxygen species and oxidative stress in mouse livers, and contributed to improved ALD symptoms in mice. The liver fat accumulation, hepatocyte inflammation, and fibrosis were reduced in ALD models. Therefore, this study suggested the feasibility of RNAi targeting to CYP2E1 as a potential therapeutic tool to the development of ALD.

Abstract Due to increasing morbidity worldwide, fractures are becoming an emerging public health concern. This study aimed to investigate the effect of metformin on the healing of osteoporotic as well as normal fractures. Type H vessels have recently been identified as a bone-specific vascular subtype that supports osteogenesis. Here, we show that metformin accelerated fracture healing in both osteoporotic and normal mice. Moreover, metformin promoted angiogenesis in vitro under hypoxia as well as type H vessel formation throughout fracture healing. Mechanistically, metformin increased the expression of HIF-1α, an important positive regulator of type H vessel formation, by inhibiting the expression of YAP1/TAZ in calluses and hypoxia-cultured human microvascular endothelial cells (HMECs). The results of HIF-1α or YAP1/TAZ interference in hypoxia-cultured HMECs using siRNA further suggested that the enhancement of HIF-1α and its target genes by metformin is primarily through YAP1/TAZ inhibition. Finally, overexpression of YAP1/TAZ partially counteracted the effect of metformin in promoting type H vessel-induced angiogenesis-osteogenesis coupling during fracture repair. In summary, our findings suggest that metformin has the potential to be a therapeutic agent for fractures by promoting type H vessel formation through YAP1/TAZ inhibition.

ABSTRACTIntegrating Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems draws increasing attention to a global and continuous localization solution. Nonetheless, in dense urban environments, GNSS-based SLAM systems will suffer from the Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) measurements, which might lead to a sharp deterioration in localization results. In this paper, we propose to detect the sky area from the up-looking camera to improve GNSS measurement reliability for more accurate position estimation. We present Sky-GVINS: a sky-aware GNSS-Visual-Inertial system based on a recent work called GVINS. Specifically, we adopt a global threshold method to segment the sky regions and non-sky regions in the fish-eye sky-pointing image and then project satellites to the image using the geometric relationship between satellites and the camera. After that, we reject satellites in non-sky regions to eliminate NLOS signals. We investigated various segmentation algorithms for sky detection and found that the Otsu algorithm reported the highest classification rate and computational efficiency, despite the algorithm’s simplicity and ease of implementation. To evaluate the effectiveness of Sky-GVINS, we built a ground robot and conducted extensive real-world experiments on campus. Experimental results show that our method improves localization accuracy in both open areas and dense urban environments compared to the baseline method. Finally, we also conduct a detailed analysis and point out possible further directions for future research. Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via the 2e− pathway in an acidic media shows great techno-economic potential for the production of hydrogen peroxide. Currently, carbon-based single-atom catalysts (C-SACs) have attracted extensive attention due to their tunable electronic structures, low cost, and sufficient stability in acidic media. This review summarizes recent advances in metal centers and their coordination environment in C-SACs for 2e−-ORR. Firstly, the reaction mechanism of 2e−-ORR on the active sites of C-SACs is systematically presented. Secondly, the structural regulation strategies for the active sites of 2e−-ORR are further summarized, including the metal active center, its species and configurations of nitrogen coordination or heteroatom coordination, and their near functional groups or substitute groups, which would provide available and proper ideas for developing superior acidic 2e−-ORR electrocatalysts of C-SACs. Finally, we propose the current challenges and future opportunities regarding the acidic 2e−-ORR pathway on C-SACs, which will eventually accelerate the development of the distributed H2O2 electrosynthesis process.

Due to their advantages of good stability, adaptability, and flexibility, multi-legged robots are increasingly important in fields such as rescue, military, and healthcare. This study focuses on the millipede, a multi-segmented organism, and designs a novel multi-segment biomimetic robot based on an in-depth investigation of the millipede’s biological characteristics and locomotion mechanisms. Key leg joints of millipede locomotion are targeted, and a mathematical model of the biomimetic robot’s leg joint structure is established for kinematic analysis. Furthermore, a central pattern generator (CPG) control strategy is studied for multi-jointed biomimetic millipede robots. Inspired by the millipede’s neural system, a simplified single-loop CPG network model is constructed, reducing the number of oscillators from 48 to 16. Experimental trials are conducted using a prototype to test walking in a wave-like gait, walking with a leg removed, and walking on complex terrain. The results demonstrate that under CPG waveform input conditions, the robot can walk stably, and the impact of a leg failure on overall locomotion is acceptable, with minimal speed loss observed when walking on complex terrain. The research on the structure and motion control algorithms of multi-jointed biomimetic robots lays a technical foundation, expanding their potential applications in exploring unknown environments, rescue missions, agriculture, and other fields.

An ethyl acetate extract of a marine actinomycete strain, Nocardiopsis mentallicus SCSIO 53858, isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample in the South China Sea, exhibited anti-quorum-sensing (QS) activity against Chromobacterium violaceum CV026. Guided by the anti-QS activity, a novel active compound was isolated and purified from the extract and was identified as 2,3-dimethoxycinnamic acid (2,3-DCA) through spectral data analysis. At a concentration of 150 μg/mL, 2,3-DCA exhibited robust inhibitory effects on three QS-regulated traits of C. violaceum CV026: violacein production, swarming motility, and biofilm formation, with inhibition rates of 73.9%, 65.9%, and 37.8%, respectively. The quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction results indicated that 2,3-DCA can disrupt the QS system in C. violaceum CV026 by effectively suppressing the expression of QS-related genes, including cviR, vioA, vioB, and vioE. Molecular docking analysis revealed that 2,3-DCA hinders the QS system by competitively binding to the same binding pocket on the CviR receptor as the natural signal molecule N-hexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone. Collectively, these findings suggest that 2,3-DCA exhibits promising potential as an inhibitor of QS systems, providing a potential solution to the emerging problem of bacterial resistance.

Three pairs of enantiomers (1–3)—the new 12R-aloesol (1a) and two new fatty acids (2 and 3)—and one new natural product (4) together three known compounds (5–7) were isolated from a coral-reef-derived Streptomyces sp. SCSIO 66814. Their structures were determined through extensive spectroscopic analysis, chiral analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Compounds 2 and 3 were presumed to be intermediates for further generating homononactic acid (5) and nonactic acid, and the latter two molecules were able to act as precursors to form macrotetrolides with remarkable biological activity. The isolation of related precursors, compounds 2–5, provided more evidence to support the proposal of a plausible biosynthetic pathway for nonactic acid and its homologs. Additionally, (+)-1 exhibited a weak activity against DPPH radicals.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the effect of "Internet + " continuity of care on postoperative functional recovery and medication compliance in patients with knee arthroplasty. Methods In this retrospective study, 100 patients who underwent knee replacement in our hospital between January 2021 and December 2022 were recruited and assigned to receive routine care (routine group) or "Internet + " continuity of care (continuity group), with 50 patients in each group. ABSTRACTWe for the first time demonstrate ground-based remote sensing of Nitrous Oxide (N2O) over Hefei in eastern China from high resolution Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) solar spectra. We have retrieved Column-averaged Abundance of N2O ([Formula: see text]) from both Near-Infrared (NIR, 4000 to 11,000 cm−1) and Mid-Infrared (MIR, 2400 to 3200 cm−1) solar spectra and inspected their agreement. Generally, NIR and MIR measurements agree well with a correlation coefficient of 0.86 and an average difference of (1.33 ± 4.05) ppbv (NIR – MIR). By correcting the bias of the two datasets, we combine the NIR and MIR measurements to investigate seasonality and inter-annual trend of [Formula: see text] over Hefei. The observed monthly mean time series of [Formula: see text] minimize in June and maximize in September, with values of (316.55 ± 12.22) ppbv and (322.05 ± 12.93) ppbv, respectively. The [Formula: see text] time series from 2015 to 2020 showed an inter-annual trend of (0.53 ± 0.10) %/year over Hefei, China. We also compared the FTIR [Formula: see text] observations with GEOS-Chem model [Formula: see text] simulations. They are in reasonable agreement with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.71, but GEOS-Chem model underestimated the seasonality of the observations. This study can enhance current knowledge of ground-based high-resolution FTIR remote sensing of N2O in the atmosphere and contribute to generating a new reliable N2O dataset for climate change research.

In this paper, hemp protein isolate (HPI) of four different varieties was extracted by alkali dissolution and acid precipitation. The molecular weight of HPI was determined and its structures were characterized by circular dichroism, free sulfhydryl and disulfide bond content and surface hydrophobicity. Finally, its functional properties were determined and the correlation analysis between functional properties and spatial structure was conducted. The results showed that HPI was mainly composed of edestin (~50 kDa) and albumin (10~15 kDa), and the former had two subunits. Random coil accounted for about 50% of the secondary structure. The content of disulfide bond in HPI from Dongbei was (5.20±0.32) μmol/g which means a more stable structure, and the content of free sulfhydryl groups HPI from Shanxi was (15.18±0.32) μmol/g that means it was easier to form aggregates. At pH4~6, the solubility of HPI was only 4.85%~31.48%. The water holding capacity and oil holding capacity of HPI were 3.26~4.24 and 4.36~6.03 g/g, respectively, superior to most plant proteins. Compared with other plant proteins, HPI had poor emulsifying and foaming capacity. BackgroundThe exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) and its polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) is closely related to the morbidity and mortality of ischemic heart disease (IHD). However, it is unclear what key components and targets of DPM exposure involve in myocardial ischemia-hypoxia injury and associated mechanisms.ObjectiveTo identify key PAH components of DPM that act on myocardial hypoxic injury, andclarify the role of oxygen sensors-regulated anaerobic metabolism in DPM and key components-induced hypoxic injury and the targets of the key PAH components.MethodsHuman cardiomyocyte cell line AC16 cells were exposed to 0, 1, 5, and 10 μg·mL−1 DPM in a high glucose DMEM medium with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) (HGM) or low FBS (0.5%) in high glucose DMEM medium (LFM), for 12 h under 2% O2, and expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), Bax, and Cleaved-caspase3 was determined by Western blotting. Under normal condition, the cell viability was detected after PAH exposure for 12 h. Under the condition of ischemia-hypoxia model, cells were exposed to 0, 0.005, 0.5, and 5 µg·mL−1 PAH for 12 h, and the protein expression of HIF-1α, Bax, and Cleaved-caspase3 was determined. After exposure to DPM or PAH for 12 h, the contents of pyruvate and lactate in cells were detected. Pretreatment with glycolysis inhibitor GSK2837808A was used to explore the role of glycolysis in DPM and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)-induced hypoxia injury. Mobile Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications have achieved the explosive growth in recent years. The mobile IIoT has flourished and become the backbone of the industry, laying a solid foundation for the interconnection of all things. The variety of application scenarios has brought serious challenges to mobile IIoT networks, which face complex and changeable communication environments. Ensuring data secure transmission is critical for mobile IIoT networks. This paper investigates the data secure transmission performance prediction of mobile IIoT networks. To cut down computational complexity, we propose a data secure transmission scheme employing Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS). The novel secrecy performance expressions are first derived. Then, to realize real-time secrecy analysis, we design an improved Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, and propose an intelligent data secure transmission performance prediction algorithm. For mobile signals, the important features may be removed by the pooling layers. This will lead to negative effects on the secrecy performance prediction. A novel nine-layer improved CNN model is designed. Out of the input and output layers, it removes the pooling layer and contains six convolution layers. Elman, Back-Propagation (BP) and LeNet methods are employed to compare with the proposed algorithm. Through simulation analysis, good prediction accuracy is achieved by the CNN algorithm. The prediction accuracy obtains a 59% increase.

CRISPR-Cas12a has been used for genome editing and molecular diagnosis. The well-studied Cas12a orthologs have a T-rich PAM and are usually categorized as non-thermally stable enzymes. Here, we identified a new Cas12a ortholog from Clostridium thermobutyricum, which survives at 60 °C. This Cas12a ortholog is named as CtCas12a and exhibits low sequence similarity to the known Cas12a family members. CtCas12a is active in a wide temperature range from 17 to 77 °C. Moreover, this ortholog has a relaxed PAM of YYV (Y=C or T, V = A or C or G). We optimized the conditions for trans-cleavage and enabled its detection of nucleic acids. CtCas12a executed genome editing in human cells and generated up to 26% indel formation in the EGFP locus. With the ability to be active at high temperatures as well as having a relaxed PAM sequence, CtCas12a holds potential to be further engineered for pathogen detection and editing a wide range of genomic sequences.

Chemical vapor deposition tungsten (CVD-W) is a promising material for plasma-facing materials. This work evaluated CVD-W samples with a large grain size (CVD-L) and a small grain size (CVD-S) together with rolled W (ND-W) and recrystallized (Rec-W) samples for their performance under deuterium (D) plasma exposure with a flux of 1021 D m−2 s−1 and fluences up to 2 × 1025 D m−2 at a surface temperature of 500 K. Both CVD-L and CVD-S samples featured a columnar grain structure with a preferred orientation close to 〈001〉 || Z, with a more preferred orientation in CVD-L samples. Both CVD-L and CVD-S samples show good resistance to blistering and only few micron-diameter blisters were observed at fluences. In ND-W and Rec-W samples, the number and size of blisters increased with fluence. The D desorption spectra show two desorption peaks in both CVD-W samples at 520 K and 570–604 K. Whereas in ND-W and Rec-W samples, two peaks were at 520 K and 607–700 K. The total D retention in both CVD-L and CVD-S samples was less than 30 % of that in ND-W and Rec-W samples. The low D retention in CVD-W samples was attributed to the low desorption intensities with the peak at 570–604 K. It is suggested that the microstructure of the columnar grain and the 〈001〉 texture in CVD-W samples helps suppressing plasma-induced blistering, therefore reducing D retention. In terms of the stability of the surface integrity and hydrogen isotopes retention, CVD-W demonstrates a significant potential as a wall material for future fusion reactors.

Background and purposeIntracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a severe form of stroke that remains understudied in the young adults. We aimed to investigate the clinical presentation, and risk factors associated with ICH in this age group and compare them to older patients.MethodsOur study included ICH patients admitted between March 2016 and December 2021 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from our ongoing prospective cohort database. Demographic characteristics, etiology, risk factors, and clinical outcomes were compared between elderly and young patients. Furthermore, logistic regression analysis was employed to explore risk factors associated with the functional outcome at 3-months.ResultsWe selected 1,003 patients (mean age, 59.9 ±13.8 years old), 746 (74.4%) patients were aged >50 years. The logistic regression analysis showed young patients have a higher proportion of secondary ICH, higher white blood cell count and higher body mass index (BMI), but less diabetes mellitus. Of all patients, predictors of 3-month functional independence was first-ever ICH and age ≤50 years. The history of nephropathy and stroke, higher baseline NIHSS score, larger hematoma volume, and the presence of hydrocephalus were associated with poor outcomes. And the white blood cell count could significantly influence the prognosis among young ICH patients. Three-month functional outcome based on modified Rankin scale score was better in young patients than the elderly (OR, 1.232; 95% CI, 1.095–1.388; p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe highest incidence of ICH occurs in the age groups of 50–59 and 60–69. ICH in young adults had higher white blood cell and BMI compared to the elderly, and differs in etiological distribution. The young patients also had similar short-term mortality but more favorable functional outcomes than the elderly. Furthermore, NIHSS score and larger hematoma volumes were associated with poor outcome in all patients.

BackgroundQuorum sensing is bacteria’s ability to communicate and regulate their behavior based on population density. Anti-quorum sensing agents (anti-QSA) is promising strategy to treat resistant infections, as well as reduce selective pressure that leads to antibiotic resistance of clinically relevant pathogens. This study analyzes the output, hotspots, and trends of research in the field of anti-QSA against clinically relevant pathogens.MethodsThe literature on anti-QSA from the Web of Science Core Collection database was retrieved and analyzed. Tools such as CiteSpace and Alluvial Generator were used to visualize and interpret the data.ResultsFrom 1998 to 2023, the number of publications related to anti-QAS research increased rapidly, with a total of 1,743 articles and reviews published in 558 journals. The United States was the largest contributor and the most influential country, with an H-index of 88, higher than other countries. Williams was the most productive author, and Hoiby N was the most cited author. Frontiers in Microbiology was the most prolific and the most cited journal. Burst detection indicated that the main frontier disciplines shifted from MICROBIOLOGY, CLINICAL, MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, and other biomedicine-related fields to FOOD, MATERIALS, NATURAL PRODUCTS, and MULTIDISCIPLINARY. In the whole research history, the strongest burst keyword was cystic-fibrosis patients, and the strongest burst reference was Lee and Zhang (2015). In the latest period (burst until 2023), the strongest burst keyword was silver nanoparticle, and the strongest burst reference was Whiteley et al. (2017). The co-citation network revealed that the most important interest and research direction was anti-biofilm/anti-virulence drug development, and timeline analysis suggested that this direction is also the most active. The key concepts alluvial flow visualization revealed seven terms with the longest time span and lasting until now, namely Escherichia coli, virulence, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, virulence factor, bacterial biofilm, gene expression, quorum sensing. Comprehensive analysis shows that nanomaterials, marine natural products, and artificial intelligence (AI) may become hotspots in the future.ConclusionThis bibliometric study reveals the current status and trends of anti-QSA research and may assist researchers in identifying hot topics and exploring new research directions.

Mango fruits are susceptible to diseases, such as anthracnose, during fruit development, leading to yield reduction. Epicuticular wax is closely related to resistance of plants to pathogenic bacterial invasion. In this study, the effect of mango fruit epicuticular wax on the invasion of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was investigated, followed by to understand the changes of wax chemical composition and crystal morphology during mango fruit development using GC-MS and SEM. Results showed that the epicuticular wax of mango fruits can prevent the invasion of C. gloeosporioides, and ‘Renong’ showed the strongest resistance to C. gloeosporioides. The wax content of four mango varieties first increased and then decreased from 40 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 120 DAFB. In addition, 95 compounds were detected in the epicuticular wax of the four mango varieties at five developmental periods, in which primary alcohols, terpenoids and esters were the main wax chemical composition. Furthermore, the surface wax structure of mango fruit changed dynamically during fruit development, and irregular platelet-like crystals were the main wax structure. The present study showed the changes of wax content, chemical composition and crystal morphology during mango fruit development, and the special terpenoids (squalene, farnesyl acetate and farnesol) and dense crystal structure in the epicuticular wax of ‘Renong’ fruit may be the main reason for its stronger resistance to C. gloeosporioides than other varieties. Therefore, these results provide a reference for the follow-up study of mango fruit epicuticular wax synthesis mechanism and breeding.

Long-term observations of the volume mixing ratio (VMR) profiles and total columns of key atmospheric constituents are significant for understanding climate change and the impact of the carbon budget in China. This study provides an overview of the first ground-based high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometry (FTS) observation station in China, which is located in Hefei, east China. The FTS observation station can observe the total columns and VMR profiles of more than 30 atmospheric constituents. Time series of some key atmospheric constituents observed at the Hefei station since 2014 have been released to the public. The major scientific achievements obtained to date at this station include spectral retrieval characterization and harmonization, investigation of the overall characteristics of key atmospheric constituents, emission estimates, satellite and chemical transport model (CTM) evaluations, and a summary of pollutant sources and transport patterns. An outlook is also presented of the envisaged plan for observations, scientific studies, and data usage at the Hefei station. China has explicitly proposed reaching a peak in its CO2 emissions by 2030 and realizing carbon neutrality by 2060. The Hefei station will provide scientific assistance to the Chinese Government for developing green economy policies and achieving carbon neutrality and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Pear is one of the most economically important fruit crops widely distributed around the world. To enrich the pear germplasm resources for obtaining the polyploid plants, the seeds from pear cultivar of 'Dangshansuli' (Pyrus bretschneideri) were treated with colchicine solution under concentration gradients of 0.1%, 0.5% and 1.0% for 12-, 24- and 48-h, respectively. Our results showed that colchicine could inhibit seed germination, and the inhibitory effect was positive with the treated concentration of colchicine. We detected that the 0.1% colchicine solution for 12 h was the most effective treatment for inducing pear polyploidy. Furthermore, compared with the wild diploid pear plants, a significant morphological variation, such as shorter plants, smaller and oval leaves were observed in the induced tetraploid pear plants. Significant changes in leaf anatomy, including larger and sparse stomata and the epidermal cells with irregularly or polygonal-shape were also detected in tetraploid pear plants. In addition, the contents of 10 cuticular wax compounds from the leaves of diploid and tetraploid pear plants were also detected with significant difference. Taken together, this study lays the foundation for polyploid breeding of pear for contributing diverse characteristics.

Objectives: Physical frailty is one of the major concerns among older people living with HIV (PLWH). This meta-analysis aimed to explore the association between physical frailty and negative health outcomes among PLWH. Methods: We systematically searched six electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Chinese databases up to April 10, 2022, for studies examining the association between physical frailty and risk of negative health outcomes among PLWH. Risk ratios (RRs), odds ratios, and hazard ratios with 95% CIs were extracted, and meta-analyses were conducted by using a fixed or random-effects model. Results: In total, 10 studies incorporating 7755 HIV–seropositive patients (mean age 49.4 years) were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, five studies with 3434 participants reported the effect of physical frailty on falls. Results showed that physical frailty in HIV–seropositive individuals demonstrated a higher risk of future falls (pooled RR 3.74, 95% CI 1.42-9.86) compared with robust HIV–seropositive patients. In addition, a meta-analysis of five studies (4321 participants) reporting the frailty-mortality association showed that physical frailty was significantly associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality (RR 1.70, 95% CI 1.32-2.19) among PLWH. Conclusion: Physical frailty is a significant risk factor for negative health outcomes in PLWH, including falls and all-cause mortality, underscoring the need for routine screening and early intervention of physical frailty among PLWH.

This paper describes a dragonfly-inspired Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FW-MAV), named HiFly-Dragon. Dragonflies exhibit exceptional flight performance in nature, surpassing most of the other insects, and benefit from their abilities to independently move each of their four wings, including adjusting the flapping amplitude and the flapping amplitude offset. However, designing and fabricating a flapping robot with multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) flapping driving mechanisms under stringent size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints poses a significant challenge. In this work, we propose a compact microrobot dragonfly with four tandem independently controllable wings, which is directly driven by four modified resonant flapping mechanisms integrated on the Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) of the avionics. The proposed resonant flapping mechanism was tested to be able to enduringly generate 10 gf lift at a frequency of 28 Hz and an amplitude of 180° for a single wing with an external DC power supply, demonstrating the effectiveness of the resonance and durability improvement. All of the mechanical parts were integrated on two PCBs, and the robot demonstrates a substantial weight reduction. The latest prototype has a wingspan of 180 mm, a total mass of 32.97 g, and a total lift of 34 gf. The prototype achieved lifting off on a balance beam, demonstrating that the directly driven robot dragonfly is capable of overcoming self-gravity with onboard batteries.

In this work, a fluorescent complex [Zn(NTD)2(DTP)2(H2O)2]·(H2O)0.8 (Complex Zn), (H2NTD = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid and DTP = 3,5-di(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)pyridine) was synthesized. The fluorescent complex was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric, elemental, infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescence analyses. In the fluorescence sensing tests, Complex Zn exhibited excellent fluorescence quenching efficiency towards Fe3+, MnO4−, Cr2O72−, nitrofurantoin, and imidacloprid in aqueous media. A mechanism investigation suggested that the fluorescence quenching caused by the quenchers toward the sensor was due to the inner filter effect and the fluorescence resonance energy transfer effect in the fluorescent sensing process.

Seven new phenol derivatives, subversins A–E (1–5), subversic acid A (6) and epi-wortmannine G (7); one new natural product, 4-hydroxy-7-methoxyphthalide (8); and five known compounds (9–13) were isolated from the fungus Aspergillus subversicolor CYH-17 collected from the Haima cold seep. The structures and absolute configurations of these compounds were determined via NMR, MS, optical rotation, electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation, X-ray diffraction analysis and comparison with the literature. Compounds 2 and 5 were two pairs of enantiomers. All compounds were tested for their α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity, but no obvious activity was observed among these studied compounds.

ObjectiveIt was unknown whether a regimen of aspirin plus ticagrelor (aspirin-ticagrelor) attenuates ischemic vascular events without increasing bleeding risk in patients who had undergone intracranial stenting compared with an aspirin plus clopidogrel (aspirin-clopidogrel) regimen. This article compares the efficacy and safety outcomes of the two double antibody regimens in patients undergoing intracranial stent and investigates whether aspirin-ticagrelor could be an alternative antiplatelet agent without increasing the risk of bleeding.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of our database for patients who had undergone intracranial stenting. From January 2017 to May 2021, consecutive patients treated with endovascular stenting were identified and dichotomized by whether aspirin-ticagrelor or aspirin-clopidogrel were used. The outcomes were compared by propensity score matching.ResultsA total of 340 patients treated with intracranial stent were included. Of all, 132 patients were matched. At 180 days, ischemic vascular events occurred in one patient (1.5%) in the aspirin-ticagrelor group and in six patients (9.1%) in the aspirin-clopidogrel group. Although the absolute incidence of ischemic vascular events [1.5% (1/66) vs. 9.1% (6/66), p = 0.125] was lower in the aspirin-ticagrelor group than in the aspirin-clopidogrel group, there were no statistical differences. There were no statistical differences in ischemic vascular events, ischemic stroke, or death up to 180 days between the two groups. In addition, the incidence of bleeding did not differ. No intracranial hemorrhage or mild bleeding occurred. No statistically significant difference was noted in restenosis and symptomatic restenosis at follow-up.ConclusionIn our study involving patients with acute ischemic stroke who had undergone intracranial stenting, aspirin-ticagrelor was not found to be superior to aspirin-clopidogrel in reducing the rate of ischemic vascular events. The risk of bleeding did not differ between the two groups. Aspirin-ticagrelor does not lower total restenosis and symptomatic restenosis risk at follow-up.

A wave of Omicron infections rapidly emerged in China in 2022, but large-scale data concerning the safety profile of vaccines and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection features in liver transplant (LT) recipients have not been collected. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the protectiveness and safety profile of the inactivated vaccines in LT patients against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infections. A multi-centre retrospective study was conducted in a cohort with a history of liver transplantation. A total of 1881 participants (487 vaccinated and 1394 unvaccinated patients) were enrolled from seven centres in China. Fourteen of the participants were infected by Omicron, and 50% patients had over 14 days of viral shedding duration. The protection rate of COVID-19 vaccinations to Omicron was 2.59%. The three breakthrough infections occurred more than 6 months after fully vaccinated. A total of 96 (19.7%) vaccinated patients had adverse events, including fatigue, myalgia, liver dysfunction, swelling, and scleroma. There were more Grade 3 adverse events in the preoperative vaccination group than those in the postoperative vaccination group. Inactivated whole-virion SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are safe in patients with post-liver transplantation. The efficacy of inactivated vaccines decreases after 6 months of vaccination, it is recommended that liver transplant patients get boosted vaccinations as early as possible even when they are fully vaccinated. Although clinical manifestations of Omicron infections were mild in LT patients, unvaccinated patients might have a higher risk of liver dysfunction during infections.

This study aimed to assess liver fibrosis in rabbits by deep learning models based on acoustic nonlinearity maps. Injection of carbon tetrachloride was used to induce liver fibrosis. Acoustic nonlinearity maps, which were built by data of echo signals, were used as input data for deep learning model. Convolutional neural network (CNN), CNN combined with support vector machine (SVM), CNN combined with random forest and CNN combined with logistic regression were used as deep learning model. Nested 10-fold cross-validation was used to search hyperparameters and evaluate performance of models. Histologic examination of liver specimens of the rabbits was performed to evaluate the fibrosis stage. Receiver operator characteristic curve and area under curve (AUC) were used for estimating the probability of the correct prediction of liver fibrosis stages. A total of 600 acoustic nonlinearity maps were used. Model of CNN combined with SVM demonstrated the best diagnostic performance compared with all other methods for diagnosis of significant fibrosis (≥F2, AUC = 0.82), advanced fibrosis (≥F3, AUC = 0.88) and cirrhosis (F4, AUC = 0.90). Model of CNN showed the second highest AUCs. The deep learning model based on acoustic nonlinearity maps demonstrated potential for evaluation of liver fibrosis.
