Exosomes are nanosized extracellular vesicles which are emerging as novel therapeutic nanoparticles. This paper reports a novel concept of engineering exosomes using nanomaterial inside the vascular endothelial cells (ECs). Gold nanorods (GNRs) could inhibit EC division and internalized GNRs located in endosomes of binucleated ECs. The GNRs could alter the composition of bioactive molecules loaded in exosomes. The engineered EC-derived exosomes could inhibit tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in vitro and suppress tumor growth in vivo. miRNA sequencing showed that the engineered exosomes contained various miRNAs that could disrupt the TGFβ pathway. Further data suggested that the engineered exosomes could suppress the expression of TGF β 1 and TGF β 2, thus inhibiting the activation of SMAD2 and SMAD3. These data highlighted the therapeutic potential of engineering exosomes using nanomaterials.

Glucose metabolism, the major source of energy, plays a crucial role in physiological cell function and the maintenance of homeostasis. Glucose acts as the predominant source of metabolic fuel in the generation of ATP and is involved in biosynthesis and epigenetics. Thus, glucose metabolism maintains a key role in cell function, homeostasis, energy generation, biosynthesis and epigenetics. An increasing number of studies have revealed that glucose metabolism is intricately involved in angiogenesis, with the disruption of angiogenesis contributing to several vascular diseases. Ocular vascular diseases are common ophthalmological disorders, and the prevalence of these disorders is increasing annually. Ocular vascular diseases largely occur from abnormal congenital development or acquired disturbances to the vasculature. Thus, identifying the process of occurrence and development of physiological and pathological angiogenesis is of utmost importance, and this involves understanding the inseparable role of intercellular communications between vascular cells. Although vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a well‑recognized therapeutic target for the management of ocular vascular diseases, VEGF‑based therapy fails to achieve the desired therapeutic effects in several cases, partly due to drug resistance and non‑compliance. In the present review, current knowledge on the processes and roles of glucose metabolism in governing both physiological and pathological ocular angiogenesis are summarized, highlighting vascular glucose metabolism as a promising strategy for maintaining or restoring the physiological functions of the vasculature, thus potentially ameliorating ocular vascular diseases.

We provided a study on homeologous gene evolution of homeologous genes by comparing Brassica genomes. Polyploidy has played fundamental roles during the evolution of plants. Following polyploidization, many duplicated genes are diversified or lost in a process termed diploidization. Understanding the retention and diversification of homeologs after polyploidization will help elucidate the process of diploidization. Here, we investigated the evolution of homeologous genes in Brassica genomes and observed similarly asymmetrical gene retention among different functional groups and consistent retention after recurrent polyploidizations. In the comparative analysis of Brassica diploid genomes, we found that preferentially retained genes show different patterns on sequence and expression divergence: genes with the function of 'biosynthetic process' and 'transport' were under much stronger purifying selection, while transcriptional regulatory genes diverged much faster than other genes. Duplicate pairs of the former two functional groups show conserved high expression patterns, while most of transcriptional regulatory genes are simultaneously lowly expressed. Furthermore, homeologs in diploids and allotetraploids showed similar loss and retention patterns: duplicates in progenitor genomes were more likely to be retained and accumulated fewer substitutions. However, transcriptional regulation is also enriched in the genes that do not have any non-synonymous mutations in the Brassica allotetraploids, indicating that some of these genes were under strong purifying selection. Overall, our study provided insight into the evolution of homeologs genes during diploidization process.

Synthetic responses of plant and soil microbial communities to grazing are indefinite in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau. Three paired, fenced and free grazing sites (alpine steppe meadow for winter pasture [ASMWP]; alpine steppe meadow for summer pasture [ASMSP]; alpine meadow for summer pasture [AMSP]) were used to compare how pasture season and grassland type affect responses of the α‐diversity and community composition of plant, soil bacteria and fungi to grazing. Cold‐season grazing reduced soil moisture by 12.10%, ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺‐N) by 53.71%, the ratio of available nitrogen to phosphorus by 64.11%, species richness (SR) by 31.4% and the Shannon by 11.9% of plant community on the ASMWP. Warm‐season grazing reduced nitrate nitrogen by 30.45%, SR of soil bacterial community by 21.98% on the ASMSP, but increased soil NH₄⁺‐N by 90.02% on the AMSP. Warm‐season grazing‐induced changes in plant community composition were mainly related to the composition of forbs on the AMSP. Grazing‐induced changes in the community composition of soil bacteria were mainly related to Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Verrucomicrobia on the ASMWP, and Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and TM7 on the ASMSP. Grazing‐induced changes in the community composition of soil fungi were mainly related to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota on the ASMWP, Basidiomycota on the ASMSP and Ascomycota on the AMSP. Therefore, the effects of grazing on plant and soil microbial communities may vary with grassland types and pasture seasons, which may be related to grazing‐induced changes in available nitrogen, the ratio of available nitrogen to phosphorus and soil moisture.

The torrefaction pretreatment technology with different temperature varying from 160℃ to 240℃ was utilized to enhance the enzymatic saccharification and hydrogen production potential of corn stover. The composition characteristics, Crystal Intensity (CrI), reducing sugars yield and hydrogen production of the pretreated corn stover were detected to explore the torrefaction pretreatment effectiveness. Results revealed that the reducing sugar yield and hydrogen production from corn stover were improved significantly through torrefaction pretreatment, both the maximum reducing sugar yield of 427.86 ± 19 mg/g Total solid(TS) and hydrogen yield of 123.72 mL/g TS were obtained at 200 ℃, increased by 46.41% and 70.79%, respectively. The kinetic parameters from Gompertz model showed torrefaction pretreatment could shorten the lag phase time of enzymatic saccharification and hydrogen production. The reducing sugar data can be fitted well by fractal-like kinetic model and Gompertz model.

Urban waterlogging becomes a challenge with the higher urbanization. This paper aims to assess waterlogging risk in the high-tech district of Zhengzhou city in China by coupling land surface hazard-pregnant (LSHP) features and underground pipe network operation (UPNO) characteristics. The LSHP risk is assessed according to the regional surface features firstly, and then with the UPNO characteristics by the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM), the conduit, junction and inundation risk indices are proposed to evaluate UPNO risk. Based on the LSHP risk and UPNO risk, the integrated waterlogging risks of different land use types are evaluated with rainstorm in different return periods (such as 1, 3, 5 and 10 years) and the “7.20 rainstorm event”. The results show that the LSHP risk is not matched with the UPNO risk of each sub-region. From downtown to suburb, the LSHP risk increases first and then decreases, while the UPNO risk decreases. Combing with the LSHP and UPNO risk indices, the urban waterlogging risk is fully revealed, and it indicates that the study area can effectively resist rainstorm with return periods of 1 and 3 years. But for rainstorm with return period of more than 3 year, the rainwater will occur in the whole area. With the situation of the “7.20 rainstorm event”, the anti-waterlogging engineering will be almost lost their functions. Generally, the waterlogging risk is higher in the northwest and southeast of the downtown and it becomes smaller in the suburbs.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the actin regulator cofilin is overactivated in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), but whether this abnormality contributes to synaptic and cognitive impairments in AD is unclear. In addition, the brain region and cell types involved remain unknown. In this study, we specifically manipulate LIMK1, the key protein kinase that phosphorylates and inactivates cofilin, in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 transgenic mice. Using local injections of the AAV virus containing LIMK1 under the control of the CaMKIIα promoter, we show that expression of LIMK1 in hippocampal excitatory neurons increases cofilin phosphorylation (i.e., decreases cofilin activity), rescues impairments in long-term potentiation, and improves social memory in APP/PS1 mice. Our results suggest that deficits in LIMK1/cofilin signaling in the hippocampal excitatory neurons contribute to AD pathology and that manipulations of LIMK1/cofilin activity provide a potential therapeutic strategy to treat AD. Surfactant addition can cause a significant change in the interface state of the solution system, which is helpful to avoid agglomeration and sedimentation of solid state, and improve the mass transfer capacity. Hence, the performance of high-solid photo-fermentative bio-hydrogen production system with bio-surfactant addition was evaluated in this work. Corncob was selected as raw material, and cumulative hydrogen yield (CHY) was taken as reference. The effect of Rhamnolipids (RLs) and Tea Saponin (TSn) addition on hydrogen yield capacity was investigated. The results showed that CHY was effectively increased by the addition of RLs and TSn, the highest CHY of 356.42 ± 16.5 mL and 265.38 ± 7.5 mL appeared when the concentrations of surfactant addition were 0.08 g/L RLs and 1.5 g/L TSn, which were 67.85% and 24.97% higher than control group, respectively. The maximum energy conversion efficiency reached 5.47% and 4.08% with an increase of 67.8% and 25.2%.

The combination pretreatment strategy is an effective way to intensify photo-fermentative biohydrogen production (PFHP) process. In this study, the synergistic effects of microwave irradiation and surfactants on the hydrogen production performance, energy analysis and structural characteristics was evaluated. Results revealed that hydrogen production performance was improved after microwave irradiation pretreatment (MIP) and surfactants assisted microwave irradiation pretreatment (SMIP). SMIP group had a higher cumulative hydrogen yield (CHY) of 367.87 ± 6.481 mL compared with control group (223.26 ± 4.329 mL) and MIP group (303.66 ± 3.366 mL), which was an increase of 36.01% and 64.77%, respectively. Energy evaluation analysis showed that the energy ratio of SMIP (0.49) was higher than that of MIP (0.37) in the PFHP system, therefore, SMIP can save more energy. After SMIP, the corncob lignocellulose structure was greatly damaged, which was verified by SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS analyses.

Comprehensive characterization of Gramineae HATs and HDACs reveals their conservation and variation. The recent WGD/SD gene pairs in the CBP and RPD/HDA1 gene family may confer specific adaptive evolutionary changes. Expression of OsHAT and OsHDAC genes provides a new vision in different aspects of development and response to diverse stress. The histone acetylase (HAT) and histone deacetylase (HDAC) have been proven to be tightly linked to play a crucial role in plant growth, development and response to abiotic stress by regulating histone acetylation levels. However, the evolutionary dynamics and functional differentiation of HATs and HDACs in Gramineae remain largely unclear. In the present study, we identified 37 HAT genes and 110 HDAC genes in seven Gramineae genomes by a detailed analysis. Phylogenetic trees of these HAT and HDAC proteins were constructed to illustrate evolutionary relationship in Gramineae. Gene structure, protein property and protein motif composition illustrated the conservation and variation of HATs and HDACs in Gramineae. Gene duplication analysis suggested that recent whole genome duplication (WGD)/segmental duplication (SD) events contributed to the diversification of the CBP and RPD3/HDA1 gene family in Gramineae. Furthermore, promoter cis-element prediction indicated that OsHATs and OsHDACs were likely functional proteins and involved in various signaling pathways. Expression analysis by RNA-seq data showed that all OsHAT and OsHDAC genes were expressed in different tissues or development stages, revealing that they were ubiquitously expressed. In addition, we found that their expression patterns were altered in response to cold, drought, salt, light, abscisic acid (ABA), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) treatments. These findings provide the basis for further identification of candidate OsHAT and OsHDAC genes that may be utilized in regulating growth and development and improving crop tolerance to abiotic stress.

Human spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) and Sertoli cells might have the applications in reproduction and regenerative medicine. Abnormal spermatogenesis results in male infertility, which seriously affects human reproduction and health. Spermatogenesis depends on the epigenetic and genetic regulation of male germ cells and somatic cells. A number of microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified in human testicular tissues, and they are closely related to male fertility. Significantly, we and peers have recently demonstrated that numerous miRNAs are essential for regulating the self-renewal and apoptosis of human SSCs and Sertoli cells through controlling their mRNA and lncRNA targets. In this review, we critically discuss these findings regarding the important functions and mechanisms of miRNAs in mediating the fate determinations of human SSCs and Sertoli cells. Meanwhile, we illustrate the regulatory networks for miRNAs by forming the upstream and downstream regulators of mRNAs and lncRNAs in human SSCs, and we address that miRNAs regulate the decisions of Sertoli cells by targeting genes and via N6-methyladenosine (m6A). We also point out the future directions for further studies on this field. This review could offer an update on novel molecular targets for treating male infertility and new insights into epigenetic regulation of human spermatogenesis.

The preparation of materials with extremely light weight and efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance is a great challenge for contemporary EMI shielding materials. Here, a simple one-step pyrolysis reduction method was used to simultaneously reduce the melamine foam (MF) and graphene oxide (GO) and silver salt adsorbed on the skeleton surface of MF to produce the carbonized melamine foam/reduced graphene oxide/Ag nanoparticles (CMF/RGO/Ag) foam. The density of CMF/RGO/Ag foam is 0.05 g cm−3, which is ultra-low and achieves high EMI SE value of 55 dB. We believe that this study show a lightweight and high SE values EMI shielding materials fabricated by an effective method, and which demonstrate great potential to protect human and electronic devices from electromagnetic pollution.

In order to explore responses of soil microbial communities among different alpine meadows under warming and clipping, soil microorganisms of three alpine meadow sites (low altitude: 4313 m, alpine steppe meadow, 30&deg, 30&prime, N, 91&deg, 04&prime, E, mid-altitude: 4513 m, alpine steppe meadow, 30&deg, 31&prime, and high altitude: 4693, alpine Kobresia meadow, 30&deg, 32&prime, 03&prime, E) were measured using the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) method. Both warming and clipping significantly reduced PLFA content and changed the community composition of soil microbial taxa, which belong to bacterial and fungal communities in the alpine Kobresia meadow. Warming significantly reduced the soil total PLFA content by 36.1% and the content of soil fungi by 37.0%, the clipping significantly reduced the soil total PLFA content by 57.4%, the content of soil fungi by 49.9%, and the content of soil bacteria by 60.5% in the alpine Kobresia meadow. Only clipping changed the total fungal community composition at a low altitude. Neither clipping nor warming changed the microbial community composition at a moderate altitude. Soil temperature, soil moisture, and pH were the main factors affecting soil microbial communities. Therefore, the effects of warming and clipping on soil microbial communities in alpine meadows were related to grassland types and soil environmental conditions.

China has plenty of starch-rich agricultural leftovers, which can be degraded and further utilized for biogas production. Potato, which has more and more cultivated areas, was taken as a substrate. The pH, OD540, biogas yield, hydrogen yield, biogas production rate, and hydrogen production rate were determined to evaluate the effect of substrate concentration on the photo-fermentation bio-hydrogen production process under an oscillation condition. Results showed that the photo-fermentation period was extended to 264 h under oscillation, which was two times longer than the static condition. It was found that 8 g per 100 mL fermentation broth was the most suitable substrate concentration under oscillation, the cumulative hydrogen yield was 510 mL VS&minus, 1, and the hydrogen content was 38.36%.

Owing to the novel insensitive high-energy-density material 2,4,6-triamino-5-nitropyrimidine-1,3-dioxide (ICM-102) has lower sensitivity and higher energy(see in Table S1, Supporting Information), it has great advantages in the application of low-vulnerability propellants. In this paper, the evaluation of ICM-102-containing composite propellants has been carried out, where the decomposition and combustion performances of these propellants have been comprehensively investigated. It has been shown that the main exothermic decomposition peak temperature can be increased from 235 oC to 350 oC, when 6 to 10 wt% of ICM-102 was used to replace RDX, but heat release rate was largely increased. Moreover, the burning rate of ICM-102 containing propellants at 3 MPa is in the range of 6.97–7.75 mm•s − 1, depending on its content. The pressure exponent (0.5–3 MPa) is between 0.34–0.44. Compared with the typical propellants with RDX, the burn rate and the flame temperature of ICM-102- containing propellants are higher. In addition, the particle size distributions of condensed combustion products of ICM-102 propellants are narrower and smaller than that of RDX-based one. It also shows that extra products such as aluminum carbide (Al20C) and aluminum oxide nitride (Al5O6N) were produced once ICM-102 was used.

The complex structure of corncob is the bottleneck that restricts its efficient biohydrogen production. Hence, effective treatment is an important exploration to break this limitation. The effect of microwave irradiation (MI) on photo-fermentative biohydrogen production (PFHP) process was evaluated in this paper. Diverse conditions (irradiation time, microwave power, and surfactant addition) were applied. Comparisons of cumulative hydrogen yield (CHY), microstructure, liquid products, and substrate conversion efficiency (Sconv) were conducted. Results showed that the highest CHY of 27.34 ± 1.13 mL/g TS was achieved when the corncob was treated by MI assisted with surfactant addition. Optimal treatment conditions (5.51 min irradiation time, 772.03 W microwave power, and 0.08 g/L rhamnolipids addition) were obtained. MI assisted with surfactant addition helped with the structure destroys and content degradation, displaying a great improves on PFHP. Lower ethanol content and higher butyric acid content were obtained. An 80.94% increase in CHY and Sconv of 90.44% were obtained than untreated corncob.
