1. Differences in cooperation between social dilemmas of gain and loss

Abstract

In social interactions, people frequently encounter gain (i.e., all outcomes are gains from the status-quo) or loss (all outcomes are losses from the status-quo) social dilemmas, where their personal interests conflict with social interests. We ask whether there are any behavioral differences in social interactions when it comes to gains and losses. Using the Prisoner’s Dilemma games, in three studies we observed that participants were less cooperative in the loss domain than in the gain domain. This effect was robust, not moderated by payoff amount (Study 1), cooperation index (Study 1), domain comparison (Studies 1 and 2), and personal loss aversion (Study 3). Social motive and belief explained this effect: compared to the gain domain, participants in the loss domain aroused more pro-self motive and less prosocial motive, and showed stronger beliefs that their partner would defect, which led them to cooperate less. These findings suggest that gain and loss domains affect individual motivation and belief, subsequently affecting strategic choices in social dilemmas.

2. Simulation of Dust Elimination During Hot Casting Residue Dumping Process.

Abstract

During the hot casting residue dumping process, a large amount of dust is generated, and the dust elimination can achieve the air purification effect of the slag dumping site. Firstly, a gas-solid coupling model was used to simulate the free diffusion characteristics of dust under air convection caused by the molten casting slag dumping process. Furthermore, it was verified with the actual dust diffusion path. Then a vacuum hood is installed to remove dust. The influence of ventilation quantity, the distance between the vacuum hood and the dust source, and the vacuum hood installed on the side and top on the dust removal efficiency were examined. The following results were obtained: (1) The dust removal efficiency is directly proportional to the ventilation quantity. In an ideal state without considering wind loss, the 200000 m3/h ventilation quantity can almost prevent the air pollution of dust particles in the dumping site; (2) The dust removal efficiency is inversely proportional to the distance between the dust hood and the dust source; (3) Top vacuum hood can achieve better dust removal effect than side vacuum hood. 3. More cooperation compensates for lower self-esteem in social dilemmas

Abstract

This research examined how self-esteem influences a person's strategy for social dilemmas where their own interests are in conflict with social interests. Using the Prisoner's Dilemma game, we designed three studies and observed robust results across the gain and loss domains, payoff amounts, and cooperation indexes. Participants who had low trait self-esteem (Study 1), participants who had state self-esteem after recall of failure (Study 2), and participants whose self-esteem was threatened (Study 3) adopted more cooperative strategies than those with high self-esteem. Choosing to cooperate helped participants with low state self-esteem improve their self-esteem, as compared to choosing to defect (Studies 2–3). By testing three underlying mechanisms, it was observed that lower levels of self-esteem induced a stronger motive to gain social interdependence, rather than social identity or social comparison (Study 3). These findings suggest a compensatory relationship between self-esteem and cooperation in social interaction. The implications for management, cooperation and collective action are discussed.
