COVID-19 is a major global crisis affecter, changing global norms and societal behavioral models. Many companies have faced existential crises, but on the other hand, businesses that were and are helping others to boost digitalization, ICT and software solutions deployment, remote communications integration, e-commerce & e-services, and so on, have boosted their businesses, as people shifted online during the global lockdown and international travel restrictions. Our work explores the trend of e-commerce and e-services utilization during the ease of restrictions and the social distancing period to forecast the trend continuation patterns after the pandemic. An online survey was conducted and targeted individuals in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, resulting in 155 participants. The data were analyzed from four perspectives: demographics, COVID-19 health impact, trend analysis, and regression analysis. The results indicate heavy utilization of e-commerce and e-services during the global movement restrictions and travel bans. This trend has, however, significantly reduced during the ease of restrictions and social distancing period. Utilizing e-commerce and e-services in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, based on the research data, is positively correlated to the outbreak conditions. On the other hand, current data still does not give clear indications, and this pattern is going to be mostly, partly, or not at all permanent now as societies are returning to mostly a free movement of people and marginally restricted social distancing times. Solving global sustainability challenges is based on a well-researched understanding of the corresponding underlying problems, key contributing factors, and current state-of-the-art. Utilizing the scope of recent doctoral studies is one potent way to map current young researchers nowadays and near future research focus areas and directions. Here, the authors focused on waste management, especially, mapping dissertations on the grooving global challenge of electronic waste. Currently, this is the first scoping study of its kind, about e-waste -related trends within the circle of waste management-related doctoral studies. Apparently, in a waste-related context, dissertations have a low interest in directly focusing on the topic of consumable e-waste, even though this waste stream is the world's fastest-growing domestic waste stream. Only a handful of doctoral dissertations, related to e-waste management, were found in the study. In a more general waste-related benchmarking/comparing mapping search, the ProQuest Digital Dissertations database was found to contain 201 dissertations between the years 2015 and 2022, covering waste matters in general. E-waste was covered in six of these 201 dissertations. These six did not have any real overlapping between each other and their research areas. Further thesis content analysis revealed e-waste topics to be currently addressed through consumer behavior, material recovery processes, forecasting, and robotics. This study examined the association between digital transformation (DT), supply chain integration (SCI), and overall sustainable supply chain performance (OSSCP). The current literature has preliminarily explored the concepts of DT and SCI and their relationship with sustainable supply chain performance. However, real empirical evidence of the direct impact of DT and SCI on OSSCP has been missing so far. To fill this gap, data were collected from 134 professionals working in international manufacturing companies operating in Morocco through a questionnaire-based survey from August 2022 to November 2022. A conceptual framework was developed based on DT, SCI, and OSSCP and analyzed by partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with the assistance of SmartPLS 4.0 software. The findings revealed that DT has a significant positive influence on SCI and OSSCP. Furthermore, SCI directly and positively impacts OSSCP with a partial mediation effect on the relationship between DT and OSSCP. Further, this research provides insights for practitioners into enhancing sustainable supply chain performance by adopting digital technologies and integrating SC functions. In particular, this study revealed that DT adoption drives a higher ethical supply chain level from the perspective of sustainability and efficiency in operations. Managers implement several Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM) practices to improve sustainability and economic performance, such as environmental management systems (EMS), eco-design (ED), source reduction (SR) and attending to external environmental management (EEM) requirements; however, the relationship among them requires a deep study. This paper reports the case of the Mexican maquiladora industry, analyzing the main relationships among GSCM practices with environmental impact (EI) and environmental cost savings (ECS). The analysis reports three structural equation models (SEM) developed as simple, second-order, and mediating models. Those relationships are tested using 160 responses to a survey applied to the Mexican maquiladora industry and with partial least squares algorithms (PLS), where conditional probabilities for different scenarios in latent variables are also reported. Findings indicate that EMS has a direct effect on EI (β = 0.442) and ECS (β = 0.227), indicating that EMS reduces EI and cost associated with the production process; however, ED has no direct effect on EI (β = 0.019) and ECS ((β = 0.006), and it can be due to the maquiladora nature as foreign companies focused on manufacturing and not to product design. The demand to fulfil a wider range of customer requirements is increasing constantly as well as the need for the customizable production tools. At the same time, the product life cycle as well as the lead time for product development shortens. To respond these changing needs, digital product development enables faster development of complex products but challenges the communication and the data management. Digital design methods and manufacturing processes enable this development and decrease the need for expensive prototyping. In this research, digital design and manufacturing process means such a process where design and manufacturing can be done even over long distances between physical location of designers and the production line. An empirical case study of a configurable bathroom faucet was performed. The digital design for manufacturing using sand casting and laser additive manufacturing as alternative digital manufacturing technologies were researched in this study as possible methods for manufacturing these configurable products.
