Summary: To evaluate the nutritional modes of orchids associated with 'rhizoctonia' fungi, analyses of hydrogen (δ2H), carbon (δ13C), and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios are usually adopted. However, previous studies have not fully accounted for exchangeable hydrogens, which could affect these evaluations.Here, we performed standard δ13C, δ15N, and δ2H analyses on bulk samples. Additionally, we conducted δ2H analysis on α‐cellulose and cellulose nitrate samples to investigate whether the heterogeneity of exchangeable hydrogens among plant species influences the assessment of nutritional modes.The δ2H of orchids were consistently higher than those of surrounding autotrophic plants, irrespective of the three pretreatments. Although the rhizoctonia‐associated orchid exhibited lower δ13C, its δ2H was higher than those of the autotrophs. Notably, among all response variables, δ15N and δ2H exhibited high abilities for discriminating the nutritional modes of rhizoctonia‐associated orchids.These results indicate that a time‐efficient bulk sample analysis is an effective method for evaluating plant nutritional modes, as the heterogeneity of exchangeable hydrogens does not significantly impact the estimation. To investigate how the long-term application of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments affects the turnover rates of organic matter in physico-chemically fractionated components in paddy soils and how their rates are related to their amounts, we studied the effect of variable management of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments for > 50 years on the ∆14C values of accumulated soil organic carbon (SOC) in fractionated components of 5 soil samples from three paddy fields. SOC was fractionated into four components based on their physico-chemical properties: (1) light fraction (LF) derived from plant residues, (2) heavy fraction (HF) containing stable aggregates, (3) oxidizable fraction (OxF) and (4) non-oxidizable fraction (NOxF) forming organo-mineral complexes with fine-textured minerals. The ∆14C values were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry using graphitized samples. The ∆14C values of SOC in NOxF (from −305‰ to − 90.5‰) were much lower than those of HF (from −123‰ to − 3.7‰) and OxF (from −215‰ to 21.0‰). Lowest values for NOxF suggested slowest turnover rates as expected, and higher and comparable values for OxF and HF implied much faster turnover rates of SOC in OxF compared with upland soils. This could be one of the characteristics of SOC dynamics in paddy soils, probably reflecting repeated puddling of plow layer soils. ∆14C values in all the fractions increased in response to the application of inorganic fertilizer and organic amendments, suggesting faster turnover rate. Soils with clayey and weathered characteristics had the lowest ∆14C values, or slowest turnover rates among the study fields. The relationship between the ∆14C value and the amount of accumulated C for HF, OxF and NOxF indicated that the more the SOC accumulated, the faster the turnover rate of the SOC was, regardless of the fractions, and the relationship of the HF was considerably different from those of OxF and NOxF. Summary: To date, there has been no robust evidence for the exploitation of saprotrophic non‐rhizoctonia fungi by green plants, although some fully mycoheterotrophic orchids are known to exploit them, and mycoheterotrophic evolution has probably occurred through intermediate mixotrophic stages.We investigated the physiological ecology of a fully mycoheterotrophic species Cremastra aphylla and its photosynthetic sister species Cremastra appendiculata, which putatively exploit saprotrophic fungi. Their mycorrhizal partners and ultimate nutritional sources were determined using molecular, stable isotopic, and radiocarbon analysis.Both Cremastra aphylla and Cremastra appendiculata were consistently associated with wood‐decaying Psathyrellaceae. In addition, both species were highly enriched in carbon‐13 (13C) and, to a less degree, in nitrogen‐15 (15N). The δ13C and δ15N values of Cremastra appendiculata were intermediate between those of Cremastra aphylla and those of autotrophic plants. All Cremastra appendiculata samples and two Cremastra aphylla samples exhibited elevated Δ14C values due to the acquisition of carbon fixed in wood during the past decades (14C‐enriched bomb carbon).Our multifaceted evidence indicated that both species obtained carbon from deadwood via saprotrophic fungi. Our findings strongly suggest that mixotrophic relationships associated with wood‐decaying fungi represent a novel evolutionary pathway for full mycoheterotrophy in orchids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Disturbance of forests by logging and subsequent forest succession causes marked changes in arthropod communities. Although vegetation cover provides important habitat for arthropods, studies of the changes in their community structure associated with forest succession have been conducted mostly at ground level. To evaluate how forests of different ages contribute to arthropod biodiversity in shrub habitat, spiders were collected from shrubs in 12 forests ranging in age from 1 to 107 yr after logging. We found marked changes in spider community structure about 10 yr after logging: the number of species and individuals declined rapidly after this time. These changes were likely caused by a decrease in shrub cover in association with forest succession. Changes in spider species composition associated with stand age were small in forests at least 11 yr old and were not clustered by forest age. After the exclusion of species of which we sampled only one or two individuals incidentally, just 0.9±0.5 (mean±SD) species were unique to these older forests. The other 41.2±4.3 species found in these forests were common to both older and young forests, although some of these species in common were found mainly in forests at least 11 yr old. These results suggest that preservation of old-growth forests contributes to the abundance of these common species, although old-growth forests contribute little to species diversity.
