The localization and quantification of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are controversial. Circulating CD34 + cells in blood have been identified as EPCs and as biomarkers of cardiovascular disease. We discuss in this paper the current data describing differential phenotype and behavior in vitro of CD34 positive cells from the circulation and adipose tissue (AT). We also describe in brief our own findings from CD34 + cells isolated from leukopheresis cones derived from healthy platelet donors and from patients undergoing bariatric surgery. We conclude that CD34 + cells in blood and in AT are different in antigenic profile and behavior in culture. The findings described assert that CD34 + cells detected in blood previously identified as biomarkers of cardiovascular disease are predominantly HPCs rather than EPCs, and that true CD34 + EPCs can be readily identified and extracted from AT, supportive of the current evidence which suggests EPCs are resident in the tissue vasculature., Endothelial progenitor cells; Hematopoietic progenitor cells; Adipose tissue, Peripheral blood; Flow cytometry; Cell culture.

Background Vascular endothelial dysfunction and intima-media thickness are characteristic aspects of several vasculitides. We investigated retrospectively the impact of steroid treatment on endothelial dysfunction and intima-media thickness in giant-cell arteritis. Methods Forty-one patients with giant-cell arteritis (28 female and 13 male) underwent flow-mediated dilatation, a marker of endothelial function, and carotid intima-media thickness within 24 h after diagnosis and 6 months thereafter. Both parameters were investigated in 41 patients of an age- and gender-matched control group. Results Brachial flow-mediated dilatation response at baseline was 3·4% (0·2, 8·0) and 1·7% (0·2, 4·8) in giant-cell arteritis patients and control group, respectively. After 6 months treatment, flow-mediated dilatation response was 2·8% (0·4, 4·8) in patients with giant-cell arteritis (P = 0·066) and 1·4% (0·1, 5·5) in the control group (P = 0·741). In contrast, mean carotid intima-media thickness of giant-cell arteritis patients improved significantly between baseline [1·0 mm (0·79, 1·2)] and 6-month follow-up [0·82 mm (0·7, 1·04), P

Background: Periprocedural anticoagulation is primarily used in endovascular procedures to prevent acute reocclusion of the target vessel, but periprocedural anticoagulation might also have an impact on long-term outcome. Consecutive bleeding events are feared complications. Despite changes in peripheral endovascular revascularizations (EVRs), the periprocedural management has remained unchanged for years. Unfractionated heparin is still the treatment of choice during and immediately after EVR. Materials and Methods: We performed a prospective, single-center, open-label phase III study comparing 2 different regimes of enoxaparin peri-interventional to peripheral EVR stratified into low- and high-risk groups according to the acute and long-term reocclusion risk due to their vessel morphology. In both groups, 0.5 mg/kg of enoxaparin as a bolus was administered intravenously 10 to 15 minutes before the start of the procedure. In the low-risk group, 40 mg of enoxaparin were administered once daily for 7 days; whereas in the high-risk group, 1 mg/kg of enoxaparin was administered subcutaneously (sc) 2 times a day for 48 hours after the procedure and afterward 40 mg of enoxaparin was administered sc once daily for 5 days. Results: For the analysis of the per protocol population, 44 patients remained in the low-risk group and 140 in the high-risk group. Concerning the primary safety end point, a total of 25 (13.59%) bleeding events occurred until day 30; 5 (11.36%) of them in the low-risk group and 20 (14.29%) in the high-risk group ( P = .809 for low vs high risk). None of the bleeding events observed were major according to Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction criteria. Concerning our primary efficacy end point, none of the patients showed an acute reocclusion classified as a significant decrease in ankle–brachial index (ABI) or elevated peak systolic velocity ratio confirmed by duplex sonography until day 30. Concerning the second end point of prevention of chronic reobstruction, at day 180 ABI has decreased in the low-risk group from mean 0.94 at day 30 to mean 0.89 and from 1.28 at day 30 to 0.85 after 6 months in the high-risk group. No significant reobstruction was found in the low-risk group, whereas 5 significant reobstruction events were objectified in the high-risk group, all of them in the femoropopliteal arterial segment at day 180. Conclusion: We conclude that low-molecular-weight heparin either in a low-dose or high-dose regime during a peripheral EVR is safe concerning bleeding complications and acute reobstructions. The long-term follow-up showed no significant difference between our high- and low-risk groups concerning reobstruction. The periprocedural anticoagulation seems to have no influence on the long-term patency rate after peripheral EVR.

Objective: Overweight and obesity are established risk factors for venous thromboembolism (VTE). We examined the difference in the frequency of primary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (PAPS) in VTE patients according to their BMI. Design and Methods: We included 998 VTE patients treated at our institution between 2009 and 2011 in a retrospective data analysis. Thrombophilia screening including evaluation for APS (lupus anticoagulant, anti-cardiolipin, and anti-B2-glycoprotein-I IgG and IgM antibodies) was performed in all patients. Results: PAPS was diagnosed in 6.8% (24/355) of normal weight (BMI 31 kg/m2) VTE patients. The difference of PAPS occurrence between these groups was statistically significant (P = 0.001). PAPS patients demonstrated higher fibrinogen levels as compared to non-PAPS patients (median 416.0 md/dl vs. 352.0 mg/dl, P = 0.001). Furthermore, fibrinogen levels increased significantly according to the body weight of patients (median normal weight patients 330.0 mg/dl vs. overweight patients 359.0 mg/dl vs. obese patients 415.0 mg/dl, P = 0.001). Conclusion: PAPS seems to be more frequent in overweight and obese patients. As PAPS patients showed significantly higher fibrinogen levels and as fibrinogen levels increased significantly according to the body weight of patients, an elevated inflammatory state in overweight and obese patients as a reason for the increased PAPS occurrence can be assumed.

Background: In endovascular recanalisation of infrapopliteal arteries, studies have already pointed out the value of balloon angioplasty, but for stent implantation very few randomized controlled data exist so far. Patients and methods: We conducted a randomized controlled prospective trial in patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) comparing the effect of percutaneous transluminal ballon angioplasty (PTA) versus primary stenting in infrapopliteal arteries, concerning 1-year clinical benefit and reobstruction rate. Results: 54 patients were either randomized for primary stenting (balloon expandable stent) or PTA alone, 33 patients were assigned to the PTA group, 21 patients to the stent group. The whole follow up period of 12 months was completed by 46 patients. Improvement by at least one Rutherford classification was reached by a total of 33 (75.0 %) of patients at month 12, 22 (81.5 %) in the PTA group and 11 (64.7 %) in the stent group. A complete ulcer healing at month 12 showed 21 (63.6 %) of all patients, with a higher percentage in patients treated with PTA alone 16 (80.0 %) vs 5 (38.5 %). 50.0 % of all patients showed re-obstruction over the follow-up period, 39.4 % of the PTA and 66.7 % of the stent group. At month 3 primary patency rate was nearly equal in both groups (76.7 % PTA vs 75.0 % stent), but drifted apart with the duration of the follow-up period, with a primary patency at month 12 in the PTA group of 48,1 % vs 35,3 % in the stent group. As for secondary patency at month 12 the PTA group showed a patency rate of 70.4 %, vs 52.9 % in the stent group. Conclusions: Primary stenting with balloon expandable stents in the infrapopliteal arteries does not outway the benefit of PTA alone with the application of modern hydrophilic balloon catheters in patients with CLI.

High levels of apolipoprotein B (apo B) are a risk factor for the development of major vascular events. We evaluated the association between plasma lipoproteins and the development of superficial femoral artery (SFA) in-stent restenosis and reocclusion in patients with peripheral artery disease. We included 139 patients with SFA stenting. Plasma lipoproteins were measured after stent implantation. Stent restenosis was assessed with duplex scan after 3, 6, and 12 months. A stenosis grade was considered relevant if >50%. Seventy-two patients experienced recurrence of their atherosclerotic disease, meaning restenosis of >50% within 1 year of follow-up. Ten of these patients had a stent occlusion. In the patients who experienced recurrence, the mean apo B level was 105.8 versus 94.9 mg/dl in patients without recurrence (P

Restenosis after percutaneous angioplasty of peripheral arteries is still an unsolved matter. Previous studies reported an association between flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), a marker of endothelial dysfunction, and restenosis after coronary angioplasty. This study evaluates the influence of FMD and brachial intima-media thickness (B-IMT) on restenosis after angioplasty of peripheral arteries. One hundred and eighty-four patients (124 male) with claudication related to peripheral arterial disease participated in this trial. FMD and B-IMT were assessed before endovascular revascularisation. In a 12-month follow-up duplex ultrasound examinations were performed to detect restenosis. Finally 128 patients (91male, 37 female) were eligible for statistical analysis. Restenosis was found in 54 patients (42.2%). Mean FMD was 3.53 ± 3.56%, with no difference between the patients with restenosis (3.55 ± 3.64%) and those without (3.52 ± 3.48%; p = 0.716). B-IMT had a mean value of 0.326 ± 0.134 mm. B-IMT significantly differed between the patients with restenosis (0.326 ± 0.134 mm) and those without (0.256 ± 0.133 mm; p = 0.007). We confirmed that a B-IMT over 0.21 mm was an independent risk factor for restenosis [OR 2.9 (1.3–6.3)]. Endothelial dysfunction is not associated with restenosis. Conversely patients with enlarged B-IMT are at risk of restenosis after angioplasty of peripheral arteries.

Background and Purpose— Adipose tissue is an abundant source of endothelial cells as well as stem and progenitor cells which can develop an endothelial phenotype. It has been demonstrated that these cells have distinct angiogenic properties in vitro and in vivo. However, whether these cells have the capacity to directly improve large vessel form and function after vascular injury remains unknown. To define whether delivery of adipose-derived endothelial cells (ADECs) would improve healing of injured carotid arteries, a rabbit model of acute arterial injury was used. Methods— Autologous rabbit ADECs were generated using defined culture conditions. To test the ability of ADECs to enhance carotid artery repair, cells were delivered intraarterially after acute balloon injury. Additional delivery studies were performed after functional selection of cells before delivery. Results— After rabbit omental fat harvest and digestion, a proliferative, homogenous, and distinctly endothelial population of ADECs was identified. Direct delivery of autologous ADECs resulted in marked reendothelialization 48 hours after acute vascular injury as compared to saline controls (82.2±26.9% versus 4.2±3.0% P Conclusions— Taken together, these data suggest that ADECs represent an autologous source of proliferative endothelial cells, which demonstrate the capacity to rapidly improve reendothelialization, improve vascular reactivity, and decrease intimal formation in a carotid artery injury model.

We investigated a polyethylene glycol non-precipitable low-density lipoprotein (LDL) subfraction targeted by IgG and the influence of statin therapy on plasma levels of these small LDL-IgG-immune complexes (LDL-IgG-IC). LDL-subfractions were isolated from 6 atherosclerotic subjects and 3 healthy individuals utilizing iodixanol density gradient ultracentrifugation. Cholesterol, apoB and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined in each fraction by enzymatic testing, dissociation-enhanced lanthanide fluorescence immunoassay and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. The levels of LDL-IgG-IC were quantified densitometrically following lipid electrophoresis, particle size distribution was assessed with dynamic light scattering and size exclusion chromatography. The influence of simvastatin (40 mg/day for three months) on small LDL-IgG-IC levels and their distribution among LDL-subfractions (salt gradient separation) were investigated in 11 patients with confirmed coronary artery disease (CAD). We demonstrate that the investigated LDL-IgG-IC are small particles present in atherosclerotic patients and healthy subjects. In vitro assembly of LDL-IgG-IC resulted in particle density shifts indicating a composition of one single molecule of IgG per LDL particle. Normalization on cholesterol levels revealed MDA values twice as high for LDL-subfractions rich in small LDL-IgG-IC if compared to dominant LDL-subfractions. Reactivity of affinity purified small LDL-IgG-IC to monoclonal antibody OB/04 indicates a high degree of modified apoB and oxidative modification. Simvastatin therapy studied in the CAD patients significantly lowered LDL levels and to an even higher extent, small LDL-IgG-IC levels without affecting their distribution. In conclusion simvastatin lowers levels of small LDL-IgG-IC more effectively than LDL-cholesterol and LDL-apoB levels in atherosclerotic patients. This antiatherogenic effect may additionally contribute to the known beneficial effects of this drug in the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Takayasu arteritis is a large vessel vasculitis among young women that affects the aorta and its branches. Disease-related subclavian or brachial obstructions can lead to hypotensive brachial blood pressure values. By contrast, arterial hypertension is also frequent in this disease, possibly unrecognized in case of solitary brachial blood pressure measurement. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with cerebral hypoperfusion related to Takayasu arteritis. Despite "pseudo-hypotensive" brachial blood pressure values of 70 mm Hg, Doppler measurement of the ankle revealed a systolic pressure of 220 mm Hg. In Takayasu vasculitis, additional ankle pressure measurement may represent the true cardiac load and blood pressure.

Vipera berus has a wide geographical distribution throughout Central and Northern Europe. The symptoms after a bite usually are mild, life threatening symptoms are mainly described in children. We describe a case of popliteal vein thrombosis of the right leg after systemic envenoming with Vipera berus venom after a bite in the right hand by a female Vipera berus in the alpine region of Styria, Austria. Changes of the plasmatic coagulation system were obvious in our patient. These changes were due to an activation of the coagulation system and might be the reason for the thrombotic event in this usually healthy young male person.

BACKGROUND: Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio (PLR) is an easily applicable blood test. An elevated PLR has been associated with poor prognosis in patients with different oncologic disorder. As platelets play a key role in atherosclerosis and atherothrombosis, we investigated PLR and its association with critical limb ischemia (CLI) and other vascular endpoints in peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We evaluated 2121 PAOD patients treated at our institution from 2005 to 2010. PLR was calculated and the cohort was categorized into tertiles according to the PLR. An optimal cut-off value for the continuous PLR was calculated by applying a receiver operating curve analysis to discriminate between CLI and non-CLI. In our cohort occurrence of CLI significantly increased with an increase in PLR. As an optimal cut-off value, a PLR of 150 was identified. Two groups were categorized, one containing 1228 patients (PLR≤150) and a second group with 893 patients (PLR>150). CLI was more frequent in PLR>150 patients (410(45.9%)) compared to PLR≤150 patients (270(22.0%)) (p150 was associated with an OR of 1.9 (95%CI 1.7-2.1) for CLI even after adjustment for other well-established vascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: An increased PLR is significantly associated with patients at high risk for CLI and other cardiovascular endpoints. The PLR is a broadly available and cheap marker, which could be used to highlight patients at high risk for vascular endpoints.

BACKGROUND: The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an easy to perform test from the white blood cell count. An increase in NLR has been associated with vascular endpoints reflecting inflammation in atherosclerotic lesions. Atherosclerosis is a global threat and vascular endpoints, like myocardial infarction or critical limb ischemia (CLI), are a leading cause of death in industrialized countries. We therefore investigated NLR and its association with CLI and other vascular endpoints in peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We evaluated 2121 PAOD patients treated at our institution from 2005 to 2010. NLR was calculated and the cohort was divided into tertiles according to the NLR. An optimal cut-off value for the continuous NLR was calculated by applying a receiver operating curve analysis to discriminate between CLI and non-CLI. In our cohort occurrence of CLI significantly increased with an increase in NLR. As an optimal cut-off a NLR of 3.95 was identified. CLI was more frequent in NLR>3.95 patients (330(48.5%)) compared to NLR≤3.95 patients (350(24.3%)) (p3.95 was associated with an OR of 2.5 (95%CI 2.3-2.7) for CLI even after adjustment for other vascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: An increased NLR is significantly associated with patients at high risk for CLI and other vascular endpoints. The NLR is an easy to perform test, which could be used to highlight patients at high risk for vascular endpoints.

Objectives To evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE), negative compression ultrasound (CUS) of the lower limbs and detection of unusual deep vein thrombosis (DVT) sites by means of magnetic resonance (MR) venography. Methods A retrospective data analysis of PE patients hospitalized at our institution from April 2009 to 2011. Results From April 2009 to 2011, a total of 762 PE patients were treated at our institution. In 169 of these patients CUS for DVT was negative. In these patients MR venography was performed for further evaluation. We found venous thrombosis at unusual sites in 12 of these patients. Due to free floating thrombus masses and fear of life-threatening PE progression we inserted an inferior vena cava filter in three of these 12 patients. The leading venous thromboembolism risk factor in our patients was immobilization (5 patients, 41.7%). Conclusions We conclude that especially in patients with PE and negative CUS of the lower limbs a thrombosis of the pelvic veins should be considered in case of symptoms for venous thrombosis in this area. Further diagnostic work-up with MR venography should be scheduled in these patients especially in patients with risk factor immobilization as therapeutic consequences might occur.

Due to intimal hyperplasia instent reobstruction in the femoropopliteal arterial segment is still an unsolved problem. Different techniques have been discussed in case of reintervention to guarantee longlasting patency rate.We conducted a randomized, controlled, pilot trial comparing Silverhawk atherectomy with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) in patients with a first instent reobstruction in the femoropopliteal arterial segment, to evaluate intima media thickness (IMT) within the treated segment, as a parameter of recurrence of intimal hyperplasia.In a total 19 patients were included: 9 patients in the atherectomy device and 10 patients in the PTA arm. IMT within the treated segment was statistically significantly elevated in all patients treated with the Silverhawk device versus the patients treated with PTA. The obvious differentiation in elevation of IMT in nonfavor for patients treated with the Silverhawk device started at month 2 (max IMT SH 0.178 mm vs. IMT PTA 0.1 mm, p = 0.001) with a spike at month 5 (max IMT SH 0.206 mm vs. IMT PTA 0.145 mm, p = 0.003) and a decline once again at month 6 (max IMT SH 0.177 mm vs. IMT PTA 0.121 mm, p = 0.02). The values for mean IMT performed the same way.Although Silverhawk atherectomy provides good results at first sight, in the midterm follow-up of treatment of first instent restenosis it did not perform better than PTA as it showed elevated reoccurrence of intimal media hyperplasia.

Intra-arterial injections represent the most feared complication of sclerotherapy for varicose veins. We present a case of an inadvertent intra-arterial injection of polidocanol at the left medial calf in a 59-year-old woman with subsequent arterial occlusions of the posterior tibial artery and foot arteries. Despite several therapeutic interventions, lower-limb amputation could not be prevented. We conducted a PubMed search for articles reporting arterial complications related to sclerotherapy, in order to evaluate aetiology, clinical presentation, therapeutic management and outcome of sclerotherapy-associated intra-arterial injections during the past 50 years. Intra-arterial injection of a sclerosing solution was reported in 63 cases, mostly after injection near the ankle region or the distal medial calf. Clinical presentation was frequently characterized by immediate pain during injection and distal ischaemia with subsequent tissue loss. Despite several treatment approaches, amputation could not be prevented in 31 cases (52.5%). The pathophysiology of arterial complications related to intra-arterial injection and advisable therapeutic interventions are discussed. Inadvertent intra-arterial injection represents a limb-threatening complication of sclerotherapy. Target-oriented and prompt therapy seems inevitable in order to reduce the risk of permanent tissue loss and amputation.

Background: Asymptomatic venous thrombotic events (VTEs) are possible findings in ambulatory cancer patients. Data regarding the incidence and clinical impact of asymptomatic VTEs are conflicting. We therefore conducted a study to evaluate the occurrence of asymptomatic VTEs of the lower limbs in ambulatory cancer patients to further evaluate the association of these asymptomatic VTEs on survival during a 9-month follow-up period. Methods: In our prospective cohort, we included 150 consecutive ambulatory cancer patients who were free of any clinical symptoms for VTEs. Compression ultrasound to detect deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) of the lower limbs was performed by a vascular specialist in all patients at baseline. In case of pathological findings the patients were treated with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) because of current established guidelines. The occurrence of death was investigated during a 9-month follow-up period. Results: A total of 27 (18%) patients with VTEs were detected, which included 13 patients (8.7%) with a SVT and 16 patients (10.7%) showing a DVT. Two patients had both, a SVT and a DVT as well. During the 9-month follow-up period the occurrence of a VTE at baseline was associated with a 2.4-fold increased risk for death (HR 2.4 (1.2–5.3); P=0.03). Conclusion: Asymptomatic VTEs of the lower limbs in ambulatory cancer patients are frequently occurring concomitant features and are associated with poor survival during a 9-month follow-up period despite anticoagulation with LMWH.

Background— Reductions in numbers of circulating progenitor cells (CD34+ cell subsets) have been demonstrated in patients at risk for, or in the presence of, cardiovascular disease. The mediators of these reductions remain undefined. To determine whether neurohumoral factors might regulate circulating CD34+ cell subsets in vivo, we studied complementary canine models of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Methods and Results— A pacing model of severe LV dysfunction and a hypertensive renal wrap model in which dogs were randomized to receive deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) were studied. Circulating CD34+ cell subsets including hematopoietic precursor cells (HPCs: CD34+/CD45 dim /VEGFR2−) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs: CD34+/CD45−/VEGFR2+) were quantified. Additionally, the effect of mineralocorticoid excess on circulating progenitor cells in normal dogs was studied. The majority of circulating CD34+ cells expressed CD45dimly and did not express VEGFR2, consistent with an HPC phenotype. HPCs were decreased in response to pacing, and this decrease correlated with plasma aldosterone levels (Spearman rank correlation=−0.67, P =0.03). In the hypertensive renal wrap model, administration of DOCA resulted in decreased HPCs. No changes were seen in EPCs in either model. Normal dogs treated with DOCA exhibited a decrease in HPCs in peripheral blood but not bone marrow associated with decreased telomerase activity. Conclusions— This is the first study to demonstrate that mineralocorticoid excess, either endogenous or exogenous, results in reduction in HPCs. These data suggest that mineralocorticoids may induce accelerated senescence of progenitor cells, leading to their reduced survival and decline in numbers.

Background Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is an autoimmune disorder affecting medium- and large sized arteries. The most common symptoms are related to ischemic cranial involvement. Nevertheless, asymptomatic aortic involvement may cause aneurysm and dissections[1]. Several studies in this issue had limitations regarding imaging methods and matched control groups. Objectives To evaluate aortic diameters in a cohort of GCA patients and a matched control group by CT-angiography (CTA) as a uniform imaging method. Furthermore, to detect the prevalence of aortic aneurysms, defined as an aortic diameter >50mm or local widening >50%, and a body surface area (BSA) adjusted aortic diameter above the 95 th percentile. Methods All patients with diagnosed GCA at least two years prior to enrolment underwent CTA of the thoracal and abdominal aorta. Patients without a rheumatic disease, who underwent thoracal and abdominal CT for other reasons (i.e. infection, cancer) participated in the age matched control group. A quotient of aortic diameters and BSA was calculated [2]. The study was approved by the local ethics committee, written informed consent was obtained. Results 128 Patients with GCA (99 female) and 111 subjects of the control group were included. Mean age of GCA patients was 74.0 ± 7.8 years, included 73 ± 117 months after GCA diagnosis. Mean thoracic aortic diameters [values/m² BSA] were 34.66 ± 4.59mm [19.89 ± 3.02mm/m²], 28.20 ± 3.50mm [16.17 ± 2.30mm/m² BSA] and 25.83 ± 3.17mm [14.82 ± 2.21mm/m² BSA] at the ascending aorta (AAT), the aortic arch (ART) and the descending aorta (DAT) respectively. The AAT diameter did not differ between GCA and control group subjects with a mean value of 34.42 ± 4.31mm [19.58 ± 2.80mm/m² BSA, p=0.411]. The mean diameters of the ART and the DAT differed significantly compared to GCA patients with values of 27.33 ± 2.86mm [15.56 ± 2.12mm/m² BSA, p=0.036] and 24.77 ± 2.70mm [14.09 ± 1.83mm/m² BSA, p=0.006]. Aortic aneurysms, defined as aortic diameter >50mm were present in 1 patient of the GCA group (0.8%) and 1 in the control group (0.9%, n.s.). Five patients of the GCA group (3.9%) and 6 control group subjects (5.4%, p=0.759) had a BSA adjusted diameter of the DAT above the 95 th percentile as proposed by Kalsch et al.[2]. We did not observe any aortic dissection or an aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. Mean abdominal aortic diameter did not differ between GCA and control group subjects with values of 21.0 ± 2.5mm and 21.0 ± 2.3mm respectively (p=1.00). Conclusions Vigilance and screening for aortic aneurysms is considered in GCA patients; however, our data of a uniform vascular imaging in GCA patients and an age matched control group suggest that the risk developing aortic aneurysms after GCA diagnosis might be overestimated.
