Abstract

The visual appearance of a product significantly influences purchase decisions on e-commerce websites. We propose a novel framework VASG (Visually Aware Skip-Gram) for learning user and product representations in a common latent space using product image features. Our model is an amalgamation of the Skip-Gram architecture and a deep neural network based Decoder. Here the Skip-Gram attempts to capture user preference by optimizing user-product co-occurrence in a Heterogeneous Information Network while the Decoder simultaneously learns a mapping to transform product image features to the Skip-Gram embedding space. This architecture is jointly optimized in an end-to-end, multitask fashion. The proposed framework enables us to make personalized recommendations for cold-start products which have no purchase history. Experiments conducted on large real-world datasets show that the learned embeddings can generate effective recommendations using nearest neighbour searches., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

7. Holocene environmental change through natural processes and human influence in Salento, South-East Italy : an integrated geomorphological and palynological investigation

Abstract

South-east Italy is a region of distinct archaeological importance in which environmental factors have clearly played a major role in settlement site selection and economic development throughout the Holocene. Little is known, however, of how the environment has changed during this period. This research focuses on the Adriatic coastal margin of Salento between San Cataldo and Otranto, an important area of prehistoric and historic settlement. The research principally determines how and at what rate the environment of the study-area has changed during the Holocene as a result of the interaction between natural processes and human influence. For the first time, detailed scientific analysis is provided on Holocene environmental change in south-east Italy. Specifically, the impact of natural processes and human influence on vegetation patterns are investigated, together with the impact of Holocene relative sea-level rise on this low-lying, semi-arid coastal zone. The research aims are tackled by geomorphological and palynological investigations of the sedimentary record within the study-area in order to derive evidence for past environmental conditions. Analyses of the sediments, macrofossils, incorporated pollen and non-pollen microfossils including dinoflagellate cysts, diatoms and algal cysts within lacustrine, freshwater marsh and marine lagoon environments are integrated to maximise the palaeoenvironmental information obtained. These analyses are interpreted together with archaeological data to reconstruct spatial differences in Holocene environmental change in the study-area. Holocene sedimentary sequences are determined and a record of vegetation change since the mid-Holocene in the study-area is interpreted from palynological analyses. In contrast to most studies of Holocene vegetation history in Italy, the sharp decline in woodland vegetation in the middle to late Holocene, is primarily attributed to human activities rather than climatic change. Palynological and archaeological evidence point to continuing relative sea-level rise in the past two millennia, an important factor in the development of coastal marsh in the study-area.

Abstract

Abstract Background A pilot cardiovascular disease prevention project was implemented in the inner-city West Midlands. It was evaluated by comparing its effectiveness to a control group where full implementation was delayed by a year. Methods Cardiovascular risk factor data were extracted on all untreated patients 35 to 74 years old from electronic medical databases in six general practices. A best estimate of ten-year CVD risk cardiovascular risk was calculated on all patients using the extracted risk factor data. Default risk-factor values were used for all missing risk factor data. High risk patients were thus identified. In four practices a project nurse systematically invited, assessed and referred high risk patients for treatment. Two control practices were provided with a list of their high risk patients. The outcomes were the proportions of untreated high-risk patients who were assessed, identified as eligible for treatment and treated under two strategies for identifying and treating such patients in primary care. Results Of all high-risk patients suitable for inclusion in the project, 40.6% (95% CI: 36.7 to 45.7%) of patients in intervention practices were started on treatment were started on at least one treatment, compared to 12.7% (95% CI: 9.8% to 16.1%) in control practices. Conclusion A strategy using electronic primary care records to identify high risk patients for CVD prevention works best with a process for acting on information, ensuring patients are invited, assessed and treated.

29. GIS for all: exploring the barriers and opportunities for underexploited GIS applications

Abstract

Geographical Information Systems have been existed since the early 1960s, but evidence suggests that adoption of GIS technologies still remains relatively low in many sectors. We will explore both the barriers that affect the utilisation of GIS and opportunities to overcome these barriers. As part of this exploration we performed a literature review, collected responses from quantitative questionnaire survey and interviewed a range of technical and domain experts. Having analysed and collated the results of these studies we have identified ways forward for future research and development to facilitate wider spread adoption and exploitation of GIS applications. Our discussion focuses on the importance of open-source GIS software, open data and cloud computing as key mediators for breaking the barriers and promoting the wider appropriation of GIS based solutions.

Abstract

Interoperability refers to the ability of two or more systems or components to exchange information and to use the information that has been exchanged. The importance of interoperability has grown together with the adoption of Digital Information Networks (DINs). DINs refer to information networks supported by telecommunication infrastructures and terminated by microprocessors. With an upcoming interest in services science and transsector business models, a stronger driver arises to further break the interoperability barriers across sectors. In this paper, we propose a novel model to address trans-sector digital interoperability, which by definition involves interoperability across different economic sectors connected by DINs. Particularly, we specify how a well known interoperability framework, the ATHENA framework, should be adapted for the economic sector plane. Based on data from the Eurostat survey on ICT usage and e-Commerce in enterprises, we illustrate how conclusions about trans-sector interoperability can be extracted and technological implications can be derived.

Abstract

When I was a doctoral student, I recognized a transformation in both perception and experience, from doctoral journey as compliance and imposition to doctoral journey as empowerment. It enabled me to clarify my values and understand how these are lived in practice, as an educator-researcher-writer. 'Creating space' emerged as a founding principle that connected these different roles and provided congruence between them. In becoming a doctorate supervisor myself, my concern was how to offer 'creative space' for others to clarify their own values in a cycle of self-discovery and empowerment. My wish was that others too might experience the doctoral journey as a means of finding a voice and extending it to a wider audience. In this paper I share the process of transforming my own journey into a pathway for others, through the founding principle of 'creating space', and demonstrate what this means in practice through co-authorship with doctoral students who were part of my doctoral writing programme.
