Bu çalışmada fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin sürdürülebilirlik ve ekolojik ayak izi ile ilgili bilgi düzeylerinin ve “sürdürülebilir kalkınma için eğitim” ile ilgili görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu amaçla nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması deseni kullanılmış örneklem amaçlı örnekleme ile seçim yapılmıştır. Araştırmaya gönüllü 24 fen bilimleri öğretmeni katılmıştır. Katılımcılar ile yapılandırılmış görüşme soruları kullanılarak yaklaşık 40 dakika süren görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Görüşmeler bire bir yazıya dökülmüş ve betimsel olarak analiz edilmiş, bulgular örnek ifadelerle sunulmuştur. Fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin ekolojik ayak izi bilgileri kavram, birleşen, hesaplama ve davranış bilgisi temaları altında, “sürdürülebilir kalkınma için eğitime” dair görüşleri ise toplumun bilgi düzeyi, öğretmen yetiştirme programlarında, eğitim sisteminde ve fen bilimleri öğretim programındaki yeri ile nasıl uygulanabileceği olmak üzere 5 tema altında incelenmiştir. Bulgulardan en dikkat çekici olanlar fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin çoğunun ekolojik ayak izi kavramını doğru olarak tanımlayamamaları, bazı öğretmenlerin sürdürülebilirlik kavramını bilmemeleridir. Görüşleri ise çeşitlilik göstermektedir ve bulgular bölümünde detaylı olarak sunulmuştur. Yeni yapılacak araştırmalarda fen bilimleri öğretmenlerine sürdürülebilir kalkınma için eğitim ile ilgili nitelikli hizmet içi eğitimler verilerek sürdürülebilirlik okuryazarı olmaları sağlanmalıdır., Tis study aims to examine the knowledge levels of science teachers about the ecological footprint and their views on “education for sustainable development”. For this purpose, a case study design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The sample if the study was selected using the purposive sampling method. The participants of the study were 24 volunteer science teachers. Structured interviews that lasted about 40 minutes were conducted. The interviews were analyzed descriptively, and the findings were presented with frequencies, percentages, and with direct quotations. The ecological footprint knowledge of science teachers was examined under four themes; knowledge of definition, components, calculation, and behaviors. Their views on the “education for sustainable development” were also examined under five themes; knowledge level of the society, the place in teacher training programs, in the education system and in the science program, and how it can be applied. The most striking findings were that most of the participant science teachers could not define the ecological footprint, and some of them did not know the sustainability. As a further study, training about the education for sustainable development might be implemented to science teachers and the effects of the training on variables such as knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivation, value, and lifestyle should be investigated.

Çalışmanın amacı fen bilimleri öğretmenlerinin STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına yönelik hazırbulunuşluk durumlarının incelenmesidir. Bu amaçla nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması deseni kullanılmıştır. Araştırma verileri dört kadın ve altı erkek fen bilimleri öğretmeninden toplanmıştır. Veriler araştırmacı tarafından oluşturulan yapılandırılmış görüşme formu yardımıyla toplanmıştır. Öğretmenlerin bilişsel, duyuşsal ve davranışsal olarak üç boyutta ele alınan hazırbulunuşluk durumlarını incelemek için toplanan veriler iki araştırmacı tarafından içerik analizi yapılarak çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma bulguları katılımcı öğretmenlerin bilişsel boyutta STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına yönelik hazırbulunuşluk durumlarının düşük düzeyde, duyuşsal ve davranışsal boyutlarda ise bilişsel boyuta göre daha fazla olduğunu göstermiştir. Öğretmenlerin hepsi STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına yönelik olumlu görüşlerini ifade etmişlerdir. Görüşmeye katılan 10 fen bilimleri öğretmeninden sadece üçü derslerinde STEM eğitimi yaklaşımını en az bir kere uyguladığını, diğer öğretmenler ise uygulamadıklarını belirtmiştir. Öğretmenlerden dördü kendini STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına uygun ders işlemek için hazır hissederken altısı tam olarak hazır olmadıklarını belirtmiştir. Bu bulgular ışığında öğretmenlerin STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına yönelik hazırbulunuşluklarını desteklemek amacıyla eğitim fakülteleri fen bilimleri öğretmen yetiştirme programlarına STEM eğitimi yaklaşımına yönelik ders eklenmesi önerilebilir ve yeni yapılacak çalışmalarda nitelikli hizmet-içi eğitimler tasarlanarak bu eğitimlerin hazırbulunuşluk durumları üzerine etkisi araştırılabilir.

Günümüzde ekolojik ve toplumsal alan ile ilgili ciddi sorunlar ile karşı karşıya kalmış durumdayız. İklim değişikliği, su krizi, sosyal ve ekonomik adaletsizlikler gibi sorunların karmaşık yapısı bu sorunlara nasıl yaklaşılması gerektiği ile ilgili belirsizliklere neden olmaktadır. Çünkü söz konusu sorunların tek bir disiplin bağlamında çözümü zordur; bu sorunların çözümü için bütüncül bir bakış açısının gerekli olduğu aşikârdır. Sorunların çözülebilmesi için bireylerin hangi beceriler kapsamında yetiştirilmesi gerektiği önemli bir husustur. Bireylere bu becerileri kazandırabilmek için farklı eğitim yaklaşımları gündeme gelmiştir ve kullanılmaktadır. Bu çalışma kapsamında, sistemsel düşünme yaklaşımının ekolojik ve toplumsal konularda karşılaşılan sorunların çözümü için yenilikçi yaklaşımlardan biri olma potansiyeli üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu kapsamda, var olan alanyazına dayanılarak sistemsel düşünme yaklaşımının tanımı, kısa tarihsel gelişimi, bu kapsam da değerlendirilebilecek olan beceriler ve bu becerilerin nasıl geliştirilebileceği açıklanmıştır. Ayrıca, STEM eğitimi yaklaşımı ve bağlam temelli öğrenme yaklaşımı ile sistemsel düşünme yaklaşımının ilişkisi de çalışma kapsamında kısaca ele alınmıştır. Çalışmanın; sistemsel düşünme yaklaşımının ne olduğunu ve hangi beceriler ile ilişkilendirildiğini merak eden araştırmacılar için faydalı ve yol gösterici olacağı, alanyazın birikimine katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.

This qualitative study aims to determine the knowledge and opinions of 6th-grade students about organ donation. In the 2018-2019 academic year, a total of 25 sixth grade students from a secondary school in Düzce participated in the study. The participants were administered open-ended questions which were created by scanning the relevant literature. Data analysis was performed by systematically examining the answers given to these questions with the content analysis technique. Findings revealed that the majority of the students (60%) had positive views regarding organ donation. While students expressed their positive attitudes towards organ donation with the words “lifesaving”, “I want to do good" and “It is necessary because people need it”; some of them did not want to donate organs, stating expressions such as “I am afraid” and “my organs should remain in my body". Some of the students were undecided because their decisions may vary depending on the situation, using sentences such as “whether I donate or not depends on the recipient”. Educational researchers could develop an instrument to collect data from larger samples to investigate the knowledge and views of middle school students about organ donation., Bu çalışmanın amacı ortaokul 6. sınıf öğrencilerinin organ bağışı hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri ve görüşlerinin tespit edilmesidir. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya 2018-2019 öğretim yılında Düzce ilinde bulunan bir ortaokuldaki 6. sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 25 öğrenci katılmıştır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak araştırmacılar tarafından ilgili alan yazın taranarak oluşturulmuş açık uçlu sorulardan oluşmuş bir soru formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin analizi bu sorulara verilen cevapların içerik analiz tekniğiyle sistematik bir biçimde incelenmesiyle yapılmıştır. Çalışmaya katılan öğrencilerden çoğunluğunun (%60) organ bağışı yapma konusuna olumlu baktığı belirlenmiştir. Öğrenciler organ bağışına yönelik bu olumlu tutumlarını “hayat kurtarma”, “iyilik yapmak isterim” ve “insanların ihtiyacı olduğu için gereklidir.” cümleleriyle ifade ederken; “korkarım” ve “organlarım benim bedenimde kalmalı” gibi ifadelerle organ bağışında bulunmak istemeyen öğrenciler de bulunmaktadır. Ayrıca öğrenciler arasında “alıcı kişiye göre verip vermeme durumum değişir” gibi cümleler kullanarak kararlarının duruma bağlı olarak değişebileceğini belirtenler de bulunmaktadır. Eğitim araştırmacıları, organ bağışına dair ortaokul öğrencilerinin bilgi ve görüşlerinin daha büyük örneklemlerden veri toplanarak ortaya koyulabilmesi için ölçek geliştirebilirler.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of an animated cartoon series on middle school student’s sub-dimensions of the environmental literacy. A quasi-experimental pre-post design with a control group is utilized. The sample is 33 volunteer 5th-grade students who attended intact classes. The objectives of the “Human and Environment” unit set the framework of the implementation and distance learning was used in both groups. In the control group, lecturing supported with presentations, interactive activities, and questioning was used during 5 weeks of the implementation. In the experimental group, the content and the activities are the same as the control group except watching animated cartoons. Episodes of the “Su Elçileri” series matched with the content and objectives of the unit were watched with the sequence of the objectives of the unit. It is ensured that the students realized the environmental problem discussed in each episode and think like the characters in the animated cartoon series. Research data were collected using Environmental Knowledge Test, Affective Dispositions towards the Environment Scale, Environmentally Responsible Behavior Scale, and Environmental Problems Attitude Scale. The findings indicate that exposure to the “Su Elçileri” animated cartoon series results in significantly better improvement in environmentally responsible behaviors and the attitude toward environmental problems than the control group. The findings draw attention to animated cartoons as a teaching strategy in environmental education and science education, especially in younger age groups., Bu çalışmanın amacı çizgi filmlerin ortaokul öğrencilerinin çevre okuryazarlığı alt boyutları üzerine olan etkilerini incelemektir. Çalışmada ön-test son-test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Örneklem birbirine benzer özelliklere sahip sınıflarda öğrenim gören 33 gönüllü 5. sınıf öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Öğrencilere fen bilimleri dersi “İnsan ve Çevre” ünitesi kazanımları çerçevesinde uzaktan eğitim uygulanmıştır. Kontrol grubunda 5 hafta boyunca sunum, etkileşimli etkinlikler ve soru sorma ile desteklenen geleneksel ders anlatımı yapılırken, deney grubunda bunlara ek olarak çizgi filmler izlenmiştir. Ünite kazanımları ile eşleştirilmiş “Su Elçileri” çizgi film serisinin bölümleri kazanımlarının sırasına uygun olarak izlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin her bölümde ele alınan çevre probleminin farkına varmaları ve çizgi filmde yer alan karakterler gibi düşünmeleri sağlanmıştır. Verilerin toplanmasında Çevre Bilgi Testi, Çevreye Yönelik Duyuşsal Eğilimler Ölçeği, Çevreye Yönelik Sorumlu Davranış Ölçeği ve Çevre Problemleri Tutum Testi kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Bulgular “Su Elçileri” çizgi filminin bölümlerini izleyen öğrencilerin kontrol grubu öğrencilerine göre çevreye yönelik sorumlu davranışlarında ve çevre problemlerine yönelik tutumlarında anlamlı gelişme olduğunu göstermektedir. Bu bulgular özellikle küçük yaş grupları için çevre eğitiminde çizgi filmlerin bir strateji olarak kullanılmasına dikkat çekmektedir.

Bu çalışmanın amacı atmosferde görülen küreselçevre problemlerinden sera etkisi, küresel ısınma, ozon tabakasının incelmesive asit yağmurları hakkındaki kavram yanılgılarını belirlemek için İngilizceolarak geliştirilmiş olan üç aşamalı bir tanı testinin Türkçeye uyarlamasınıyapmaktır. Arslan, Cigdemoglu ve Moseley (2012) tarafından geliştirilmişgeçerliliği ve güvenirliliği raporlanmış test, araştırmacılar tarafından Türkçeyeçevrilmiş, daha sonra test uyarlama süreçlerinin aşamaları kullanılmıştır. Ankara’dakibir üniversitede öğrenim gören 207 öğretmen adayına uygulanarak geçerlilik vegüvenirlik çalışması yapılmıştır. Atmosfer ile İlişkili Çevre Problemleri TanıTesti (AÇPTT)’nin geçerliği hem nitel yöntemler hem de nicel yöntemlerlesağlanmıştır. Katılımcıların toplam puanları ile cevaplarından emin olma düzeyleriarasında pozitif ilişki olması, az kavram yanılgısına sahip olduğubelirlenenlerin, fazla kavram yanılgısına sahip olduğu belirlenenlere göre cevaplarındandaha emin olduklarını göstermektedir. Aynı zamanda testin geçerliliğinidestekleyen yanlış sebepli doğruların ve doğru sebepli yanlışların yüzdeleri olmasıgereken aralıkta çıkmıştır, bu değerler sırası ile %4.77 ve %3.08’dir. Testin Cronbachalpha güvenirlik katsayısı 0.73, ortalama zorluk derecesi 0.22’dir. Testin Türkçeleştirilmesiulusal eğitim araştırmacılarının ve öğretmenlerin onu tanı, başarı, ya da erişitesti olarak kullanılabilmesi açısından önemlidir., The purpose of this study is to adapt a three-tier diagnostic test from English to Turkish to assess misconceptions of learners from high school or higher levels, about atmosphere related environmental problems which are about greenhouse effect, global warming, ozon layer depletion, and acid rains. The test as a valid and reliable instrument is developed in English by Arslan, Cigdemoglu and Moseley (2012), then translated into Turkish by researchers, after that, test adaptation producers were employed. Reliability and validity of the test was provided by administrating it to 207 pre-service teachers from a university in Ankara. The reliability of atmosphere related environmental problems diagnostic test (AÇPTT) was proofed by both quantitative and qualitative methods. The positive correlation between participants’ total score and their confidence levels indicates that the ones who hold fever misconceptions feel more confident than the ones who have more misconceptions. Besides, the percentages of false positives and false negatives which support the validity are calculated in the expected range, the values are 4.77% and 3.08% respectively. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient is 0.73 and the mean difficulty index is 0.22. The translation of the test to Turkish language is important since it provides national education researchers and teachers to use it as diagnostic, formative or summative assessment tool.

Argumentative practices have the potential to contribute to scientific literacy. However, these practices are not widely incorporated in science classrooms and so their effect on the domains of literacy is still not revealed. Therefore, this study proposes to reveal the effect of argumentation on the three domains of chemical literacy related to the concepts of acids and bases. The study participants comprised 29 freshman pre-service science teachers’ enrolled in a General Chemistry-II course. Argumentation practices were implemented over six weeks. Open-ended contextual chemical literacy items were developed to assess the differences in the chemical literacy domains and the items were administered before and right after the intervention. The responses to the chemical literacy items were scored with a rubric and three scores were calculated: knowledge, competency, and attitudes. Paired samplet-tests were used to compare the mean scores. All the intervention sessions were video recorded, and three of them were analyzed according to three criteria: the presence of arguments, the frequency of arguments, and the levels of the arguments. The findings revealed that the argumentation practices contributed to the pre-service teachers’ chemical literacy skills, mostly to their knowledge and competencies when compared to their attitudes. Moreover, distinct differences in the quality of argumentation levels were observed over the six weeks.

This study describes the development and validation of a three-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test, the atmosphere-related environmental problems diagnostic test (AREPDiT), to reveal common misconceptions of global warming (GW), greenhouse effect (GE), ozone layer depletion (OLD), and acid rain (AR). The development of a two-tier diagnostic test procedure as described by Treagust constitutes the framework for this study. To differentiate a lack of knowledge from a misconception, a certainty response index is added as a third tier to each item. Based on propositional knowledge statements, related literature, and the identified misconceptions gathered initially from 157 pre-service teachers, the AREPDiT was constructed and administered to 256 pre-service teachers. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of the pre-service teachers' scores was estimated to be 0.74. Content and face validations were established by senior experts. A moderate positive correlation between the participants' both-tiers scores and their certainty scores indicated evidence for construct validity. Therefore, the AREPDiT is a reliable and valid instrument not only to identify pre-service teachers' misconceptions about GW, GE, OLD, and AR but also to differentiate these misconceptions from lack of knowledge. The results also reveal that a majority of the respondents demonstrated limited understandings about atmosphere-related environmental problems and held six common misconceptions. Future studies could test the AREPDiT as a tool for assessing the misconceptions held by pre-service teachers from different programs as well as in-service teachers and high school students.

This paper focuses on instructors' experiences on usage of an open-source Learning Management System (LMS), Moodle in their courses. The study was conducted in a private university in Ankara, Turkey where the widespread use of the Moodle has only recently started. The phenomenological design has been utilized as qualitative research method for this paper. The Participants comprised in structures from different faculties who are new users of the Moodle. Open-ended interviews were carried out, and the data was transcribed into codes and themes. The research findings indicate that instructors have different impressions from the system in terms of their effort and expectation. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Researches in interdisciplinary teaching methodologies on environmental education and in assessing their impact were recommended in Thessaloniki Declaration (UNESCO, 1997). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to develop and field test an educational game, EnviroPoly, to promote environmental literacy. The game was piloted with 44 elementary/mid-level pre-service teachers. Afterwards five pre-service teachers met in a focus group to discuss the game and its procedures. The discussions and observations of the large group of teachers during play and the smaller focus group indicated that EnviroPoly is attractive, motivating, enjoyable and useful. Additionally the game was found to be applicable for different grade levels by adapting reading and question cards. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
