Several muscle variations have been observed in flexor aspect of forearm which can hamper normal functioning of hand or may remain silent. One such unreported variation has been described in this report. An accessory muscle in the left forearm was found involving flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) and palmaris longus (PL). This muscle was originating from the distal part of both FCU and PL through a slip from each tendon. After merging, it passed above the ulnar nerve and artery in the roof of Guyon’s canal. This type of variation can cause neurovascular compression and can also mimic soft tissue mass, tumour or neuroma and can be misdiagnosed. Knowledge about this type of variation is important in cases of neurovascular decompression, forearm, and hand surgeries and these can be utilized in tendon transfer or free muscle flap for reconstruction purposes.

Objective: This study evaluated the effects of finish-line design, tooth preparation taper or total occlusal convergence (TOC), and digital production technology on the retention of provisional crowns for molars. Material and Methods: Different taper angles (10° TOC and 20° TOC) and finish line designs (chamfer and shoulder) were used to prepare four mandibular first molar teeth. Two subgroups of the prepared teeth received temporary crowns that were either “Computer-Aided Design” and “Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milled or 3D printed. Hence, eight test groups of temporary crowns containing 10 samples each were created. Groups 1–4 were milled, and Groups 5–8 were 3D printed specimens. A consistent procedure was used to cement 80 temporary crowns. The specimens were thermocycled for a total of 5000 heat cycles, initially at 5 °C for 30 s (dwell time) and then at 55 °C for 30 s. The pull-off force necessary to remove the temporary crowns was recorded, and the tensile strength, which served as the dependent variable, was calculated. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to assess the variations in retention forces among the test groups. Results: The mean tensile strengths at maximum load [MPa] were higher in Groups 5, 6, 7, 8 (6.6 MPa, 6.91 MPa, 7.65 MPa, and 7.45 MPa respectively) as compared to the mean tensile strengths at maximum load [MPa] in Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 (2.35 MPa, 3.52 MPa, 3.21 MPa, and 2.45 MPa respectively). Conclusion: For extended periods, 3D-printed crowns with steeper preparation tapers (20° TOC) and shoulder finish lines exhibited enhanced retention.

Objective: This study evaluates the antibacterial efficacy and cytocompatibility of titanium implants coated with silver, chitosan, and antibiotics. Materials and Methods: Antibacterial properties were tested using inhibition zones against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. The cytocompatibility was assessed through cell viability, adhesion, and proliferation by using human osteoblast-like cells (MG-63). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD test. Results: Antibiotics showed the highest antibacterial activity. Silver reduced cell viability, adhesion, and proliferation, while chitosan balanced antibacterial efficacy and biocompatibility. Time-dependent viability assays indicated consistent reduction for silver-treated cells. Conclusion: Silver, chitosan, and antibiotics are effective against implant-related pathogens, but their cytocompatibility varies.

Background: Dental prosthesis manufacturing has undergone a radical change with the introduction of intraoral digital impression technologies and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD and CAM) processes. Investigations into these systems’ accuracy in creating dental restorations that adhere to clinical standards are still underway. Materials and Methods: For this investigation, a total of 60 patients in need of single-unit crowns were chosen. They were divided into three groups of 20: Group A used intraoral digital impression systems, Group B used conventional impression procedures, and Group C combined digital impressions with CAD and CAM processes. The marginal fit and internal fit of the crowns were compared to assess the correctness of the dental prosthesis. A stereomicroscope was used to evaluate the marginal fit, and micro-CT imaging was employed to analyze the interior fit. ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test were used to examine the data, with a significance threshold of P < 0.05. Results: The mean marginal fit was 120 ± 15 μm for Group A, 80 ± 10 μm for Group B, and 75 ± 8 μm for Group C, according to the data. The internal fit values were 150 ± 20 μm for Group A, 90 ± 12 μm for Group B, and 85 ± 10 μm for Group C. According to statistical analysis, Group B and Group C outperformed Group A in terms of accuracy in both internal and marginal fits (P < 0.01). There was no discernible difference between Group B and Group C. Conclusion: When constructing dental prostheses, intraoral digital impression technologies and CAD and CAM workflows show better accuracy over conventional impression techniques. The greatest clinical results are obtained when digital impressions and CAD and CAM workflows are combined, indicating that these technologies need to be accepted as routine procedures in prosthetic dentistry.

Introduction: This systematic review was done to present the role of robots in dentistry. Materials and Methods: The search was conducted using the terms “dental robotics,” “robotic-assisted dentistry,” “robotic surgery in dentistry,” “robotics in dental procedures,” and “automated dental systems.” Results: Out of the 607 publications analyzed, only six were chosen and included in the calculations based on their publication year. Conclusion: Precision and accuracy in robotics are discussed and used in many fields, yet they have limitations. In impoverished nations, robots replacing people is science fiction, always seeking improvement. Therefore, robotic dentistry is a fiction that could become real soon.

This study investigated the influence of experiential learning (EL) on entrepreneurial intention (EI) of the students through the lens of perceived behavioural control (PBC). To present a comprehensive perspective, we have explored the direct influence of the antecedents associated with the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The data for were collected via a structured questionnaire from 1,250 final-year management science students. The study employed the partial least squares structural equation modelling method approach for data analysis. The results confirm positive relationships between EL and EI (β = 0.266). In addition, PBC mediates and enhances the relationship between EL and EI (β = 0.30). The result also showed that the TPB antecedents, namely entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms, and PBC, significantly and positively influence students’ EIs. The proposed model explains a 64% variance in EIs. Moreover, the influence of EL on EI gets stronger when PBC acts as a mediator. Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate on PBC and EL.The study has valuable insights and practical and theoretical implications forhigher education institutions, and policymakers on making more informed resource allocations and fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship.

Background: Dental implants are an effective treatment option for edentulism, which poses a substantial barrier to oral health. The quality of the bone at the implant site may have an impact on the outcome of implant therapy. The purpose of this retrospective investigation was to assess implant survival rates and problems in individuals who were edentulous and had varying forms of bone. Methods: Patients who were edentulous and had dental implants placed between 2020 and 2022 were included. Preoperative radiographic examination was used to establish the kind of bone, which was then used to analyze implant survival rates and problems. A statistical study was carried out to compare the results between various bone kinds. Findings: The analysis comprised 225 edentulous patients in total. The implant survival rates varied according to the kind of bone; kind 1 bone had the highest survival rate (94.0%), while Type 4 bone had the lowest (75.0%). As bone quality declined, so did the incidence of complications such as peri-implantitis, implant movement, and implant breakage. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study emphasizes how important bone type is for implant survival rates and issues in edentulous individuals. Comprehending these correlations is essential for enhancing therapeutic results and directing clinical judgment in implant therapy.

Background: Implant-supported prostheses have become a cornerstone of restorative dentistry, offering patients an effective solution for missing teeth. However, the choice of material for these prostheses can significantly impact their maintenance requirements and long-term success. Methods: Patient records of individuals who received implant-supported prostheses over a 2-year period were reviewed. Data on maintenance interventions, including adjustments, repairs, and replacements were collected and analyzed for metal alloys, ceramics, and composites. Results: Metal alloys exhibited slightly higher average numbers of adjustments compared to ceramics and composites. Ceramics required a higher mean number of repairs and replacements compared to other materials. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in adjustment frequency between metal alloys and ceramics (P = 0.047), but no significant differences were observed for repairs or replacements. Conclusion: The outcomes imply that material choice plays a significant role in the maintenance requirements of implant dental prostheses. While metal alloys may require more frequent adjustments, ceramics and composites may necessitate more repairs and replacements over time. Clinicians should consider these factors when selecting materials for implant prostheses and develop tailored maintenance protocols to optimize treatment outcomes.

Background: Endodontic retreatment is crucial for preserving dental health but is influenced by various factors. Objective: This research aimed to assess factors affecting the success of endodontic retreatment procedures. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 250 cases of endodontic retreatment. Demographic and clinical data were collected, and treatment success was defined based on predetermined criteria. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate associations between treatment factors and retreatment outcomes. Results: The overall success rate was 75%. Rotary instrumentation, gutta-percha obturation, and use of intracanal medication were significantly associated with higher retreatment success rates (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Factors such as instrumentation type, obturation material, and intracanal medication significantly influence endodontic retreatment success. Understanding and optimizing these factors are crucial for improving treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Background: In the realm of fixed prosthodontics, the transition from conventional to digital impressions has been a subject of ongoing debate. This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of digital versus conventional impressions in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients requiring fixed prosthodontic treatment were selected for this study. Each patient received both digital and conventional impressions. The digital impressions were obtained using an intraoral scanner, while conventional impressions were taken using polyvinyl siloxane material. The impressions were then used to fabricate fixed prostheses for each patient. Accuracy was assessed through measurement of marginal fit using a standardized technique, and efficiency was evaluated based on time taken for impression procedures. Results: The mean marginal discrepancy for digital impressions was found to be 38 micrometers (±5), whereas for conventional impressions, it was 45 micrometers (±7). Additionally, the average time taken for digital impressions was 12 minutes, compared to 20 minutes for conventional impressions. Conclusion: Digital impressions demonstrated superior accuracy and efficiency compared to conventional impressions in fixed prosthodontics.

Objective: This retrospective research was directed to investigate the longevity and maintenance requirements of implant-supported prostheses in subjects treated at a tertiary care center. Methods: Patient records of individuals who received implant-supported prostheses between January 2018 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Demographic information, implant type, prosthetic design, and follow-up data were collected. The primary outcomes assessed were prosthetic survival rates and the incidence of complications requiring maintenance interventions. Statistical analysis was performed to identify associations between demographic and clinical variables and the observed outcomes. Results: The research included 150 subjects with an average follow-up duration of 3 years. The overall survival rate of implant-supported prostheses was 90%, with 20% requiring maintenance interventions. Common complications included peri-implantitis (10%), prosthetic fracture (6%), and screw loosening (4%). Significant associations were found between smoking status and peri-implantitis (P < 0.05) and between prosthetic design and prosthetic fracture (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Implant-supported prostheses demonstrated a high overall longevity rate, with a subset of subjects requiring maintenance interventions due to complications. Peri-implantitis, prosthetic fracture, and screw loosening were the most prevalent complications, emphasizing the importance of tailored patient care and risk stratification.

Background: By resolving the difficulties associated with missing teeth, implant-supported restorations have emerged as a key component of contemporary dentistry. The choice of prosthetic materials is crucial in establishing the durability and clinical efficacy of these restorations. Methods: A prospective design was used at a tertiary care hospital with 150 patients receiving implant-supported restorations. Depending on which of the three prosthetic materials were utilized for their prosthesis—ceramic, metal, or polymer—the patients were randomized into one of three groups. Clinical assessments were carried out at baseline and at regular intervals for a minimum follow-up period of [insert time]. These evaluations included implant stability, peri-implant health, restorative integrity, patient satisfaction, and maintenance needs. Results: When compared to metal and polymer alternatives, ceramic restorations showed superior implant stability (75.2 ± 3.6 N cm), peri-implant health (1.8 ± 0.4), and restoration integrity (92%). Ceramic restorations had the greatest patient satisfaction ratings (8.5 ± 1.2), but there was no statistically significant difference between the material groups. Restorations made of polymers showed the greatest maintenance requirements (2.0 ± 0.9). Conclusion: The choice of prosthetic material has a major impact on how well implant-supported restorations function clinically. Ceramic restorations performed better in terms of restoration quality, peri-implant health, and implant stability, demonstrating their appropriateness for producing positive long-term outcomes.

Background: Maxillary molar endodontic treatments require the right post and core system. This study tested cast metal, glass fiber with composite resin, carbon fiber with composite resin, and zirconia post and core materials. Materials and Methods: Sixty removed human maxillary teeth were randomly divided into four post and core material groups (n = 15 per group). The teeth acquired their post and core system after normal endodontic treatment. Fracture resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and microleakage analyses were statistically assessed. Results: The zirconia post and core material had the highest fracture resistance (mean: 900 N), followed by carbon fiber with composite resin, cast metal, and glass fiber with composite resin. Zirconia had the highest mean cycles to failure (120,000), followed by carbon fiber with composite resin (100,000), cast metal (110,000), and glass fiber with composite resin (90,000). Zirconia had the lowest mean microleakage score (1.8), and glass fiber with composite resin, the highest (3.0). Conclusion: The zirconia post and core material outperformed the others in fracture resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and sealing. The cast metal has better fracture and cycle fatigue resistance than glass fiber with composite resin. These findings help doctors choose maxillary molar endodontic post and core materials.

Objective: This study's goal was to assess the failure rate and peri-implant complications of single-piece implant systems over the course of a one-year follow-up. Materials and Methods: Patient records were examined retrospectively. 150 single-piece dental implants were analyzed. Clinical results, implant features, and demographic information were gathered. Implant failure, which is characterized as the total loss of osseointegration, served as the key outcome indicator. Patient satisfaction and peri-implant problems were secondary outcomes. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics. Results: During the one-year follow-up period, the failure rate for single-piece implant systems was 6.7%. The two main factors leading to implant failure were found to be poor osseointegration (60%) and biomechanical overload (40%). 20% of the cases had peri-implant problems, such as peri-implantitis. 85% of the panelists felt that single-piece implants had satisfied their patients. Conclusion: A 6.7% failure rate in single-piece implant systems was seen in this one-year follow-up investigation. The major causes of implant failure were found to be poor osseointegration and biomechanical loading. In 20% of the cases, peri-implant problems such as peri-implantitis, were noted. There was great patient satisfaction. These results highlight the significance of regulating occlusal forces, optimizing osseointegration, and applying preventive measures to ensure the long-term viability of single-piece implant systems.

Introduction: Many adjuvant methods have been researched to enhance the immediate implant success in the recent times. The study's goal was to compare the aesthetic and biological results of immediate dental implants in the aesthetic zone to standard tapered root form implants that had not undergone pre-treatment with platelet-rich plasma or photofunctionalization. Materials and Methods: The study used a randomized controlled trial as its design. Ninety subjects were chosen at random and placed into three groups: a control group, a case group, and a group that needed replacement of their maxillary anterior teeth right away following extraction. The interventional groups received the “Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)” or “Photofunctionalization (PF)” group before the implant placement. After the delayed loading approach, the prosthesis was given after 6 months. At the second and fourth weeks, as well as 2, 4, 6, and 12 months (P 0.05), follow-up was conducted. The success and survival rate, aesthetic, and biological outcomes were assessed. One-way ANOVA was used to compare outcomes, and repeated-measures ANOVA was used to assess intragroup variations over baseline and follow-up. Results: The distal, mesial, and mean marginal bone loss as well as the aesthetic scores for pink and white did not differ significantly between groups. The implant stability however was significantly higher in the PF and PRP groups as compared to the controls. A single implant failed in all the three groups. The success percentage was similar for all the groups. Conclusion: The stability of immediate dental implants pre-treated with PRP or PF differed statistically significantly than the subjects in the control group, while other parameters remained the similar between the groups.

Introduction: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has a long history of usage in implant abutments, but it has not seen much applications in tooth-supported prosthetics. The purpose of this research was to examine the clinical performance of PEEK crowns as well as the level of patient satisfaction with them. The pilot study was designed as an in vivo longitudinal examination. Material and Methods: Twenty patients each received a PEEK crown during the procedure. In total, 22 implants were inserted, with 11 going into the maxilla and 9 into the mandible. One operator was responsible for carrying out each phase of the procedure. The resin cement was used to lute the crowns that were produced. Baseline, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year after the crowns were placed, they were evaluated for various parameters using Modified Ryge's Criteria. These evaluations were performed at intervals of 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year. In addition, a questionnaire was used at the same time to assess the level of satisfaction felt by patients. Fisher's exact test was utilized in the process of analyzing the data that were gathered. Results: According to the findings, 92.5% of the crowns met the modified version of Ryge's criterion for a satisfactory rating. Three crowns had a fracture recorded. There was some chipping off observed in five of the crowns. There was not any significant difference in the other factors that were examined. The periodontal health of these three patients showed a slight degree of variance (P = 0.02). Conclusion: The capacity of PEEK crowns to create high-quality prostheses that were deemed satisfactory with a reasonably low rate of fracture during the relative mean duration of 1 year was established by the application of Modified Ryge's Criteria. The PEEK crowns demonstrated their ability to produce quality prostheses.

Introduction: Surface roughness of the crowns is dependent on the pattern material used for the making as well as the procedure of investing. The study was aimed to examine the impact of various pattern materials and investment procedures on the surface roughness of nickel-chromium alloy raw castings. Materials and Methods: An in-vitro study was piloted at a tertiary care hospital. Eighty samples of inlay wax and pattern resin were divided equally. They were invested in phosphate-bonded investment material and kept under normal atmospheric pressure as well as invested under a pressure of 3 bars. The surface roughness was calculated with a Profilometer. The values obtained were compared using statistical tools keeping P < 0.05 as significant. Results: Lowest surface roughness was seen for the wax pattern invested under positive pressure. While the highest was seen for the resin patterns invested at room pressure. A significant variance between the wax 1 and wax 2 (P < 0.01); as well as between the wax 2 vs. Resin 2 specimens (P < 0.01) was noted. Conclusions: Wax patterns can be suggested as the material and method of choice because they showed the least amount of surface roughness when placed under pressure. Resin patterns when invested under pressure can also be suggested as an alternate as they also exhibited similar surface roughness as that of the wax.

The current research describes the synthesis and characterization of reduced graphene (rGO) doped with lanthanum oxide (La2O3/rGO). The nanocomposite was created using a simple reflux technique. To analyze the structure and characteristics of the synthesized nanoparticles, characterization techniques such as XRD, SEM, EDAX, FT-IR, BET, Raman, and UV studies were used. The photocatalytic capability of the La2O3/rGO nanocomposite was confirmed by degrading Congo red dye at a concentration of 10 ppm in 65 min. Following first-order rate kinetics, the synthesized nanocomposite demonstrated a high degradation efficiency of 73.7 %. A half-life time of 37.02 min was also measured, demonstrating efficient photocatalytic action. The reusability of the catalyst was evaluated, and it demonstrated sustained stability across six repetitions with constant catalytic amounts. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity of the nanocomposite was tested, indicating significant efficacy in depleting DPPH (2, 2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) radicals. With an IC50 value of 299.102 mg/mL, a significant reduction of roughly 97.81% was achieved.

In the present study, SnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized, and their structural features were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Modified electrodes (MCPE) were prepared and utilized to access the electrochemical behaviour of dopamine. This study was conducted in a phosphate buffer solution with a pH value of 7.2. The results indicate that the modified carbon paste electrode (MCPE), with a high active surface area, exhibited excellent electrochemical sensing properties and demonstrated good reproducibility and high sensitivity for the electrochemical determination of DA. Potentially interfering compounds were tested at the surface of the proposed sensor, confirming that, they did not interfere with the determination of DA under optimum condition. Additionally, the photocatalytic properties of SnO2 were evaluated in degradation of cationic and anionic dyes. It was concluded that the higher photocatalytic activity in SnO2 nanocomposites was attributed to their porosity and high surface area.

AbstractDuring machinability, the combination of machining process parameters and the material properties of the component to be machined plays an important role. Material properties depend upon the type of phase form present and the grain size of the formed phases, which in turn depends upon the prior treatment given to alter the initial room temperature types and form. Accordingly, spheroidization treatment was carried out on medium carbon steel (AISI1040) by altering the initial room temperature structure through normalizing and hardening treatment. Machinability experiments were performed on CNC machine by varying machining process constraints. Tool wear and surface roughness of the machined component obtained by turning were analyzed and correlated. Using Minitab and full factorial design, the ANOVA study was carried out. With the help of regression analysis, residual and main effect plots combined optimization (tool wear and surface roughness) was targeted. ANOVA result shows excellent machinability for the as-bought-spheroidized condition where feed has a 67% contribution to tool wear (TW) whereas the depth of cut has a 71.91% contribution to surface roughness (SR). Also, the optimized regression values obtained for machining parameters are feed (0.39 mm/rev), depth of cut (0.6 mm), and spindle speed (780 rpm) with composite desirability of 0.8174. TW and SR experimental values for the optimized machining parameters are 0.039 mm and 2.89 μm, respectively, and the difference between the actual and optimized values is less than 5%.

Introduction: In edentulous individuals, single implant-retained mandibular overdentures are an effective substitute for double implant-retained overdentures. In this current research, the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) was assessed for the immediate loading overdenture using the implants. The comparisons are drawn between the single and double implants. Materials and Methods: Forty subjects received single and double implants for the placement of the mandibular overdentures. Within a week days of implant insertion, they were loaded with overdentures. Using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire, the OHRQoL was measured before treatment, one month following treatment, and 12 months thereafter. Results: In both the single implant and double implant groups, participants' mean OHIP-14 scores decreased statistically significantly for the different timelines. For the single implant group, the baseline total mean OHIP-14 score was 14.33, and for double implants, it was 19.15. Following therapy, it decreased to 8.55 in the single implant group and 9.48 for the double implant group at one month, and at 12 months, it further decreased to 3.25 in the single implant group while it was 5.15 in the double implant group. Conclusions: Single and double implants increase the QoL for older subjects who are edentulous at the 1-month and 1-year recall points. When two implants are used by older individuals, the single implant might offer an equivalent quality of life.

Immediate implants have been gaining popularity in recent times. There are many adjuvant techniques that are followed before implant placement, which have recently shown hopeful results. For this reason, the current comparative study analyzes the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and photofunctionalization (PF) at a tertiary care dental hospital. In the current clinical trial, 30 subjects were grouped equally to receive immediate dental implants, with one group in which pretreatment of the extraction site was done with the auto-PRP and PF, while the control group received no pretreatment. For 12 months after the placement of the implant, the subjects were observed for alterations in the parameters. The variables analyzed were survival, esthetics, biological integration, and finally the success of the implants in each group. Values were noted and compared using the appropriate statistical tools, while keeping the level of significance at P < 0.05. For the variables of esthetics and survival, no substantial differences were observed in the PRP and PF groups. There was no difference between these experimental groups and the control group. However, there were significant differences for the biological variable as there was more marginal bone loss in the experimental groups. On the whole, the success was greater for the experimental groups than the control group, though not significant. The pretreatment protocols using PRP and PF have shown to improve some characteristics of the immediate implants in the anterior regions. However, further studies are suggested.

Objective: This study assessed the influence of chitosan nanoparticles on the fluoride-releasing ability of 4 glass ionomer cement (GIC) through an in vitro analysis. Methods: Four types of GIC (type II light cure universal restorative, type II universal restorative, GC Fuji VII, and type IX) were modified with nanochitosan particles; 10% chitosan was added to the glass ionomer liquid. Six specimens for each of the 4 groups were created, using expendable Teflon moulds. Discs of each type of GIC (n = 6) were immersed in deionised water at various time intervals. Electrodes selective for fluoride ions were employed to analyse the amount of released fluoride at 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. Results: Chitosan-modified GICs showed greater fluoride release than conventional GICs at all time points. All samples showed an initial high release of fluoride that tapered off with time. The total amount of fluoride released increased from the 1st day to the 28th day on adding chitosan to all the 4 types of GIC. Amongst those, type IX high-strength posterior extra with chitosan released a considerably higher quantity of fluoride at all time intervals. Conclusions: In all the experimental groups, adding chitosan to the glass ionomer liquid had an accelerating effect on its fluoride-releasing property.

Abstract Background Isolated right upper lobe pulmonary agenesis is a highly uncommon congenital anomaly, usually detected at adulthood when the patient is evaluated for an incidental abnormal chest radiograph. Chest radiography findings are non-specific. Chest computed tomography with pulmonary angiography is the modality of choice for diagnosing pulmonary agenesis. Case presentation We describe a case of isolated right upper lobe agenesis in a young man who presented with mild shortness of breath and an abnormal chest radiograph. High-resolution computed tomography chest showed right upper lobe pulmonary agenesis which was initially erroneously diagnosed as right lower lobe collapse on chest X-ray. Abnormal segmentation of the middle lobe was also seen which has not been described earlier according to our literature search. Conclusions There should be a high index of suspicion for congenital anomalies on chest X-ray to recommend further imaging studies. This case highlights the importance of computed tomography with pulmonary angiography to adequately assess and characterize the congenital lung anomalies.

Abstract Background Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare monoclonal plasma cell neoplasm that originates from tissues other than the bone marrow and constitutes only 3%–5% of all plasma cell neoplasms. Most cases involve the upper respiratory tract. Extramedullary plasmacytoma involving the lung is extremely rare. Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma is a rare type of extramedullary plasmacytoma, usually presenting with a nodule or mass in hilar region. Literature search has shown very few cases of immunohistochemically confirmed cases of pulmonary plasmacytoma. Diffuse pulmonary infiltration is an unusual presentation. Case presentation We report the case of a 56 year old lady with history of cough and breathlessness since one month. Computed Tomography revealed diffusely scattered multiple cavitating nodules and consolidation in both lungs. Computed Tomography guided biopsy of one of the lung nodules was done. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry showed features of pulmonary plasmacytoma .This is an unique case of primary pulmonary plasmacytoma with the rare presentation as diffusely scattered multiple cavitating nodules and consolidation. According to our literature search, primary pulmonary plasmacytoma manifesting as cavitating nodules is being reported for the first time. Conclusions Primary pulmonary plasmacytoma should be also be considered in the differential diagnosis of multiple diffusely scattered cavitating lung nodules.

Background: Additive manufacturing (three-dimensional (3D) printing) has become a leading manufacturing technique in dentistry due to its various advantages. However, its potential applications for dental ceramics are still being explored. Zirconia, among ceramics, has increasing popularity and applications in dentistry mostly due to its excellent properties. Although subtractive manufacturing (3D milling) is considered the most advanced technology for the fabrication of zirconia restorations, certain disadvantages are associated with it. Methods: A systematic review was piloted to compare the clinical performance of zirconium crowns that were fabricated using three-dimensional (3D) milling and 3D printing. A meta-analysis was performed, and studies published up to November 2022 were identified. The terms searched were “Zirconium crowns”, “3D printing”, “CAD/CAM” (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing), “Milling”, “dental crowns”, and “3D milling”. The characteristics that were compared were the year in which the study was published, study design, age of the patient, country, the number of crowns, the type of crown fabrication, marginal integrity, caries status, and outcomes. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to structure this systematic review. Out of eleven hundred and fifty titles identified after a primary search, nine articles were included in the quantitative analysis. The research question based on PICO/PECO (Participant, Intervention/exposure, Comparison, and Outcome) was “Do 3D-printed and milled (P) zirconia crowns and FDPs (I) have a better survival rate (O) when conventional prosthesis is also an option (C)”? The data collected were tabulated and compared, and the risk of bias and meta-analysis were later performed. Only nine articles (clinical research) were selected for the study. Since there were no clinical studies on the 3D printing of zirconium crowns, six in vitro studies were considered for the comparison. Zirconium crowns in the milling group had an average minimum follow-up of 6 months. Results: A moderate risk of bias was found, and survival was significant. A high heterogeneity level was noted among the studies. Marginal integrity, periodontal status, and survival rate were high. Linear regression depicted no statistical correlation between the type of cement used and the survival rate. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the milled crowns had a higher performance and satisfactory clinical survival.

Abstract Passive particle manipulation using inertial and elasto-inertial microfluidics have received substantial interest in recent years and have found various applications in high throughput particle sorting and separation. For separation applications, elasto-inertial microfluidics has thus far been applied at substantial lower flow rates as compared to inertial microfluidics. In this work, we explore viscoelastic particle focusing and separation in spiral channels at two orders of magnitude higher Reynolds numbers than previously reported. We show that the balance between dominant inertial lift force, dean drag force and elastic force enables stable 3D particle focusing at dynamically high Reynolds numbers. Using a two-turn spiral, we show that particles, initially pinched towards the inner wall using an elasticity enhancer, PEO (polyethylene oxide), as sheath migrate towards the outer wall strictly based on size and can be effectively separated with high precision. As a proof of principle for high resolution particle separation, 15 µm particles were effectively separated from 10 µm particles. A separation efficiency of 98% for the 10 µm and 97% for the 15 µm particles was achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate sheath-less, high throughput, separation using a novel integrated two-spiral device and achieved a separation efficiency of 89% for the 10 µm and 99% for the 15 µm particles at a sample flow rate of 1 mL/min—a throughput previously only reported for inertial microfluidics. We anticipate the ability to precisely control particles in 3D at extremely high flow rates will open up several applications, including the development of ultra-high throughput microflow cytometers and high-resolution separation of rare cells for point of care diagnostics.

Introduction: The world has faced the pandemic of COVID-19 in the march of 2020 and still it continues to effect in 2021. Hence, in the present study we aim to evaluate the gulps in the research so that certain recommendations can be made for the future research. We conducted a scoping review of the COVID meta-analysis. Materials and Methods: Online data was collected from the search engines of EBSCO, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The searched terms were COVID-19, CORONA, SARS-CoV-2, clinical features, Wuhan, etc. The study articles were collected that from January 2020 to February 2021. Based on the PRISMA guidelines, the meta-analysis was performed. Results: In the present study, we finalized 316 articles. On February 2020, the first article was published. We observed a spike in the meta-analysis later on. Most of the meta-analysis were issued in the virology and infection magazines. As expected, the majority studies were from Wuhan. The other countries that published the meta-analysis were the USA, the UK, and Italy. The studies included in each meta-analysis were nearly 25 and the subjects were approximately 16 thousand. Background and Objective: Loosening of abutment screws in dental implants is a mechanical complication that affects prosthetic treatments and hence, patient satisfaction. Blood contamination of abutment screws may play a role in this phenomenon. However, only limited research attention has been given to this issue. In the present study, we determined the effect of blood contamination and decontamination protocol on the reverse torque value (RTV) of abutment screws. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based survey was sent to 210 implantologists requesting feedback on their attitude to the blood contamination issue and the decontamination protocols used. The survey responses were used in a selection of the decontamination solutions that were used in the subsequent in vitro study on the effects of blood decontamination protocol on the RTV of abutment screws. Thus, three study groups were used (n = 20 abutment screws in each group): Group 1 (control group; blood-contaminated screws); Group 2 (screws decontaminated with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution); and Group 3 (screws decontaminated with normal saline solution (0.9%)). Then, each of the connections were subjected to thermocycling, and RTVs of the screw were measured using a digital torque meter. Intragroup and intergroup RTVs were analyzed for significance using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s honestly significant difference (HSD) tests. Results: 48% of the implantologists responded to the survey; 80% of them were concerned with blood contamination in the implant connection, especially before abutment loading and 85% of them used either chlorhexidine solution or normal saline solution as the decontamination agent. The mean RTV for Group 2 screws (30.27 ± 2.8 N.cm) was significantly greater than that for Group 3 screws (26.02 ± 1.99 N.cm) which, in turn, was significantly greater than that for Group 1 screws (23.64 ± 1.84 N.cm). Conclusion: Decontamination of blood-covered connections using 5.25% NaOCl solution or normal saline solution restores the RTV of abutment screws. This finding may have clinical relevance in that the decontaminated screws may contribute to the low incidence of screw loosening and, ultimately, improved patient satisfaction.

The coronal seal in root canal-treated teeth may be compromised depending on the accuracy of post space preparation and post cementation along with remaining gutta-percha. Root canal treatment can be compromised by endotoxins released by the coronal bacteria as a result of microleakage. The study was conducted by undergraduate students to measure the gap between the cemented post and residual gutta-percha. In total, 217 endodontically treated teeth were evaluated with intraoral peri-apical radiographs. Based on the intraoral periapical radiographic examination in the CS-R4 program, Group I had no gap, Group II had a gap of >0 to 2 mm, and Group III had a gap of more than 2 mm between the end of the cemented post and the remaining gutta-percha. In total, 40% (n = 87) of the teeth had no gap, 59% (127) had a gap of >0 to 2 mm, and 1% (n = 3) had a gap of more than 2 mm between the cemented post end and remaining gutta. Chi square test revealed a significant difference in the gap between the post and remaining gutta-percha between males and females students (p < 0.001). In terms of the gap between the cemented post end and the residual gutta-percha, the root canal treated teeth with post and core by undergraduates were clinically acceptable.

Under the catalysis of microwave radiation, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in situ by reducing silver ions (AgNO3) using the phenolic hydroxyl groups of the tyrosine domain in silk sericin. The dispersion synthesized nano-biocomposite was characterized using different analytical instruments. The surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption band observed at 412 nm in UV–visible (UV–vis) spectra confirm the generation of AgNPs. The FCC crystal structure and generation of Ag0 atoms were revealed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to investigate the distribution, shape evolution, size of AgNPs, and the finding revealed a spherical morphology with an average size of 8.4 nm. The sericin synthesized AgNPs were used to detect mercury ions (Hg2+) in an aqueous solution selectively and sensitively, and the interaction response was monitored using UV–vis spectroscopy. As Hg2+ was added to AgNPs, the overall absorbance dropped significantly, and the color changed from yellow to colorless. With the best linearity fit (R2 = 0.995) in the concentration range of 10–100 ppb, the maximum of detection (LOD) was about 15 ppb. Bio-based AgNPs can prove to be an excellent material for optical sensors.

Dear Editor, We thank Dr. Jian Xie for the valuable inputs on our paper titled ‘Chronic mechanical irritation and oral squamous cell carcinoma: A systematic review and meta-analysis [1].’ The first concern of Dr. Xie was that we had included two studies that were based on the same population. We re-examined these papers, one was published in 2010 [2] and the other in 2017 [3] by the same group of authors. Given the significant time difference between the two papers, we did not want to presume they were from the same sample population. The objective of the present article was to qualitatively and quantitatively review the association between chronic mechanical irritation and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). PubMed, SCOPUS, and Web of Science databases were searched using the keyword combinations “chronic trauma and oral squamous cell carcinoma; chronic irritation and oral squamous cell carcinoma; chronic irritation and oral cancer; and chronic trauma and oral cancer.” Duplicates and irrelevant articles were excluded after the title and abstract screening. The full texts of the remaining articles were assessed using selection criteria. A total of 375 (PubMed-126; SCOPUS-152; WOS-97) articles were screened, and 343 duplicates and irrelevant articles were excluded from the study. Only 9 of the remaining 32 articles met the selection criteria and were included in the qualitative analysis. Buccal mucosa and tongue, being highly prone to chronic irritation through the dental prosthesis, were the common sites for OSCC. Edentulous subjects with ill-fitting dentures were at a high risk of developing chronic irritation associated-OSCC. According to the Joanna Briggs Institute of risk assessment, eight of the nine included studies had a low risk of bias. The quantitative analysis showed a significant association (p < 0.00001) between the chronic oral mucosal irritation and OSCC with an overall risk ratio of 2.56 at a confidence interval of 1.96-3.35. Chronic oral mucosa irritation has a significant association with OSCC, and the nature of association could be that of a potential co-factor (dependent risk factor) rather than an independent risk factor.

The aim of this study is to investigate the combined effect of a digital manufacturing technique (subtractive vs. additive), preparation taper (10° vs. 20° TOC), and finish line (chamfer vs. shoulder) on the marginal adaptation of temporary crowns following cementation with a compatible temporary cement. Four mandibular first molar typodont teeth were prepared for full coverage crowns with standard 4 mm preparation height as follows: 10° TOC with the chamfer finish line, 10° TOC with the shoulder finish line, 20° TOC with the chamfer finish line and 20° TOC with the shoulder finish line. Each of the four preparation designs were subdivided into two subgroups to receive CAD/CAM milled and 3D-printed crowns (n = 10). A total of 80 temporary crowns (40 CAD/CAM milled and 40 3D-printed) were cemented to their respective die using clear temporary recement in the standard cementation technique. The samples were examined under a stereomicroscope at ×100 magnification following calibration. Linear measurements were performed at seven equidistant points on each axial surface and five equidistant points on each proximal surface. One-way ANOVA analysis and Tukey HSD (Honestly Significance Difference) were performed. The best marginal fit was seen in group 8, while the poorest fit was noted in group 2. Shoulder finish lines and 10° TOC resulted in higher marginal gaps, especially in CAD/CAM milled group. The selection of 3D-printed crowns may provide a better marginal fit within the range of clinical acceptability. Marginal gaps were within clinical acceptability (50 and 120 µm) in all groups except group 2.

The liver exhibits complex geometrical morphologies of hepatic cells arranged in a hexagonal lobule with an extracellular matrix (ECM) organized in a specific pattern on a multi-scale level. Previous studies have utilized 3D bioprinting and microfluidic perfusion systems with various biomaterials to develop lobule-like constructs. However, they all lack anatomical relevance with weak control over the size and shape of the fabricated structures. Moreover, most biomaterials lack liver-specific ECM components partially or entirely, which might limit their biomimetic mechanical properties and biological functions. Here, we report 3D bioprinting of a sacrificial PVA framework to impart its trilobular hepatic structure to the decellularized liver extracellular matrix (dLM) hydrogel with polyethylene glycol-based crosslinker and tyrosinase to fabricate a robust multi-scale 3D liver construct. The 3D trilobular construct exhibits higher crosslinking, viscosity (182.7 ± 1.6 Pa·s), and storage modulus (2554 ± 82.1 Pa) than non-crosslinked dLM. The co-culture of HepG2 liver cells and NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells exhibited the influence of fibroblasts on liver-specific activity over time (7 days) to show higher viability (90–91.5%), albumin secretion, and increasing activity of four liver-specific genes as compared to the HepG2 monoculture. This technique offers high lumen patency for the perfusion of media to fabricate a densely populated scaled-up liver model, which can also be extended to other tissue types with different biomaterials and multiple cells to support the creation of a large functional complex tissue.
