Polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) are the most common type of passive air sampler used for a range of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs), including regulated persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and emerging contaminants (e.g., novel flame retardants, phthalates, current-use pesticides). Data from PUF-PAS are key indicators of effectiveness of global regulatory actions on SVOCs, such as the Global Monitoring Plan of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. While most PUF-PAS use similar double-dome metal shielding, there is no standardized dome size, shape, or deployment configuration, with many different PUF-PAS designs used in regional and global monitoring. Yet, no information is available on the comparability of data from studies using different PUF-PAS designs. We brought together 12 types of PUF-PAS used by different research groups around the world and deployed them in a multi-part intercomparison to evaluate the variability in reported concentrations introduced by different elements of PAS monitoring. PUF-PAS were deployed for 3 months in outdoor air in Kjeller, Norway in 2015–2016 in three phases to capture (1) the influence of sampler design on data comparability, (2) the influence of analytical variability when samplers are analyzed at different laboratories, and (3) the overall variability in global monitoring data introduced by differences in sampler configurations and analytical methods. Results indicate that while differences in sampler design (in particular, the spacing between the upper and lower sampler bowls) account for up to 50 % differences in masses collected by samplers, the variability introduced by analysis in different laboratories far exceeds this amount, resulting in differences spanning orders of magnitude for POPs and PAHs. A pilot study was initiated in 2018 under the Global Atmospheric Passive Sampling (GAPS) Network named GAPS-Megacities. This study included 20 megacities/major cities across the globe with the goal of better understanding and comparing ambient air levels of persistent organic pollutants and other chemicals of emerging concern, to which humans residing in large cities are exposed. The first results from the initial period of sampling are reported for 19 cities for several classes of flame retardants (FRs) including organophosphate esters (OPEs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) including new flame retardants (NFRs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). The two cities, New York (USA) and London (UK) stood out with ∼3.5 to 30 times higher total FR concentrations as compared to other major cities, with total concentrations of OPEs of 15,100 and 14,100 pg/m3, respectively. Atmospheric concentrations of OPEs significantly dominated the FR profile at all sites, with total concentrations in air that were 2–5 orders of magnitude higher compared to other targeted chemical classes. A moderately strong and significant correlation (r = 0.625, p < 0.001) was observed for Gross Domestic Product index of the cities with total OPEs levels. Although large differences in FR levels were observed between some cities, when averaged across the five United Nations regions, the FR classes were more evenly distributed and varied by less than a factor of five. Results for Toronto, which is a ‘reference city’ for this study, agreed well with a more in-depth investigation of the level of FRs over different seasons and across eight sites representing different urban source sectors (e.g. traffic, industrial, residential and background). The enantiomers of chiral pesticides are selectively broken down in soil and water to yield residues and metabolites, which are non-racemic. The distinctive enantiomer signatures of residues are preserved upon volatilization, providing site-specific tracers for air-soil and air-water exchange. Applications of enantiomeric tracers include distinguishing the atmospheric transport of freshly applied pesticides from those which are 'recycled' from lakes, oceans and soil, and investigating biotic vs abiotic degradation pathways. Examples are given of using pesticide enantiomers to follow volatilization from the Great Lakes and arctic waters and as indicators of pesticide emissions from agricultural soils. The cryosphere is an important component of global organic contaminant cycles. Snow is an efficient scavenger of atmospheric organic pollutants while a seasonal snowpack, sea ice, glaciers and ice caps are contaminant reservoirs on time scales ranging from days to millennia. Important physical and chemical processes occurring in the various cryospheric compartments impact contaminant cycling and fate. A variety of interactions and feedbacks also occur within the cryospheric system, most of which are susceptible to perturbations due to climate change. In this article, we review the current state of knowledge regarding the transport and processing of organic contaminants in the global cryosphere with an emphasis on the role of a changing climate. Given the complexity of contaminant interactions with the cryosphere and limitations on resources and research capacity, interdisciplinary research and extended collaborations are essential to close identified knowledge gaps and to improve our understanding of contaminant fate under a changing climate.

There have been a number of developments in the need, design and use of passive air samplers (PAS) for persistent organic pollutants (POPs). This article is the first in a Special Issue of the journal to review these developments and some of the data arising from them. We explain the need and benefit of developing PAS for POPs, the different approaches that can be used, and highlight future developments and needs. The context, needs and state-of-the-art of passive air sampling techniques for atmospheric persistent organic pollutants are discussed.

Atmospheric concentrations are reported for the main component of the brominated flame retardant decaBDE (BDE-209) in air samples collected from Southern Ontario for the period January 23–June 06, 2002. Levels ranged from below detection to 105 pg m−3 with virtually all of BDE-209 being trapped by the filter and thus deduced to be sorbed to aerosol particles. Thus, it is likely that the long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of BDE-209 is controlled by the transport characteristics of the aerosols. This conclusion that BDE-209 does not have the same potential for LRAT as other more volatile PBDEs is subject to possible complications arising from the uncertainties about the LRAT potential of aerosols.

A novel design of rapidly equilibrating passive air sampler was deployed at 38 sites across 19 European countries to investigate short-term spatial variability of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Devices were sealed in airtight containers to eliminate the possibility of contamination during transit and couriered to recipients with deployment instructions. Exposure times of 7 days permitted the use of back trajectory analysis to further understand the factors responsible for influencing the large-scale spatial distribution of PCBs, PBDEs, PCNs, PAHs, lindane and HCB. Following sampler harvest, devices were sealed and returned for analysis. Comparison of sequestered levels showed that PAHs exhibited the greatest spatial variability (by a factor of 30) with higher levels often associated with greater population density. In contrast, HCB values were much more uniform, reflecting its well mixed distribution in the atmosphere. Spatial variation was strongly influenced by air mass origin, with lower levels being observed at most sites impacted by maritime air masses. Polymer-coated glass (POG) slides are used as short-term air samplers in a survey of POPs in different European countries.

In this paper we present a number of equilibrium partition constants for fluorotelomer alcohols and olefins among them data for air/water and octanol/air partitioning. These data are typically required for environmental fate modeling. Our data deviate substantially from those in the literature. A comprehensive check for consistency and plausibility strongly suggests that the data published here are correct. As a consequence the fluorotelomer alcohols will sorb much more to organic phases and have a smaller tendency to remain in the water phase than expected based on previous data. The presented partition data also allow us to derive descriptors for the various kinds of specific (e. g., H-bonds) and nonspecific (e. g., van der Waals) intermolecular interactions that the compounds can undergo. These descriptors can be used in polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFER) in order to predict a large variety of other partition coefficients (e.g., air/solvent, solvent/water) as well as the temperature dependence of their air/water partitioning. The experimental and theoretical approach that we present here can serve as a general example for what needs to be done in order to ensure high quality physicochemical data for organic pollutants.

Although there is indisputable evidence that long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT) of organic contaminants occurs on a global scale, uncertainties remain about the detailed mechanism and extent of this phenomenon as well as the physical–chemical properties which facilitate LRAT. In this study, we discuss how mass balance models and monitoring data can contribute to a fuller understanding of the mechanism and extent of LRAT. Specifically we address the issues of “grasshopping” or “hopping” (the extent to which molecules are subject to multiple hops as distinct from a single emission-deposition event) and “global fractionation” (the differing behavior of chemicals as they are transported). It is shown that simple mass balance models can be used to assist the interpretation of monitoring data while also providing an instrument that can be used to assess the LRAT potential and the extent of hopping that organic substances may experience. The available evidence supports the notion that many persistent organic pollutants experience varying degrees of “hopping” during their environmental journey and as a consequence become fractionated with distance from source.

The enantiomers of chiral pesticides are often metabolized at different rates in soil and water, leading to non-racemic residues. This paper reviews enantioselective metabolism of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in soil and water, and the use of enantiomers to follow transport and fate processes. Residues of chiral OCPs and their metabolites are frequently non-racemic in soil, although exceptions occur in which the OCPs are racemic. In soils where enantioselective degradation and/or metabolite formation has taken place, some OCPs usually show the same degradation preference; e.g. depletion of (+)trans-chlordane (TC) and (-)cis-chlordane (TC), and enrichment of the metabolite (+)heptachlor exo-epoxide (HEPX). The selectivity is ambivalent for other chemicals; preferential loss of either (+) or (-)o,p'-DDT and enrichment of either (+) or (-)oxychlordane (OXY) occurs in different soils. Non-racemic OCPs are found in air samples collected above soil which contains non-racemic residues. The enantiomer profiles of chlordanes in ambient air suggests that most chlordane in northern Alabama air comes from racemic sources (e.g. termiticide emissions), whereas a mixture of racemic and non-racemic (volatilization from soil) sources supplies chlordane to air in the Great Lakes region. Chlordanes and heptachlor exo-epoxide (HEPX) are also non-racemic in arctic air, probably the result of soil emissions from lower latitudes. The (+) enantiomer of alpha-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha-HCH) is preferentially metabolized in the Arctic Ocean, arctic lakes and watersheds, the North American Great Lakes and the Baltic Sea. In some marine regions (Bering and Chukchi seas, parts of the North Sea) the preference is reversed and (-)alpha-HCH is depleted. Volatilization from seas and large lakes can be traced by the appearance of non-racemic alpha-HCH in the air boundary layer above the water. The enantiomer ratio (ER) is currently the standard descriptor of enantiomeric (chiral) signatures for environmental samples. In this paper, we argue for the adoption of the enantiomer fraction (EF) as the standard descriptor by showing drawbacks to the use of ER. The enantiomer fraction is superior because it provides a more meaningful representation of graphical data and is more easily employed in mathematical fate expressions. Several useful expressions are presented that allow EF to be used for tracking and apportioning chemical movement between environmental compartments and for investigating microbial degradation processes.
