Graphene as a two-dimensional material is prone to hydrocarbon contaminations, which can significantly alter its intrinsic electrical properties. Herein, we implement a facile hydrogenation-dehydrogenation strategy to remove hydrocarbon contaminations and preserve the excellent transport properties of monolayer graphene. Using electron microscopy we quantitatively characterized the improved cleanness of hydrogenated graphene compared to untreated samples. In situ spectroscopic investigations revealed that the hydrogenation treatment promoted the adsorption ofytyt water at the graphene surface, resulting in a protective layer against the re-deposition of hydrocarbon molecules. Additionally, the further dehydrogenation of hydrogenated graphene rendered a more pristine-like basal plane with improved carrier mobility compared to untreated pristine graphene. Our findings provide a practical post-growth cleaning protocol for graphene with maintained surface cleanness and lattice integrity to systematically carry a range of surface chemistry in the form of a well-performing and reproducible transistor.

The phenomenal revelation by the Cassini spacecraft of exospheric plumes spewing from the surface of Enceladus into space [1] overturned our common perception that icy moons are geologically inactive and cold planetary bodies in our solar system. Instead, the on-board magnetometer detected a disturbance in Saturn’s magnetosphere due to plumes outgassing, hereby hinting at the existence of a subsurface ocean [2] which motivated closer flybys of the icy moon. The observation of the plumes’ composition further revealed the presence of complex organics [3] and raised the question of their origin. The icy grains in the plumes that exceed the escape velocity travel outward to Saturn’s E-ring from 4 to 8 Saturn radii. A study by Nölle et al. evidenced how during this journey the organic portion within the ice is strongly altered by impinging photons, while the degradation of salt rich particles is dominated by plasma sputtering [4]. Past studies have extensively probed the vacuum-UV (VUV) irradiation of icy grains in the interstellar medium [5,6], whereas little is known about photon irradiation of ices under environmental conditions characteristic for those present on icy moons such as Enceladus. New insights from space-based instruments onboard ESA’s JUICE or NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft are expected to arrive at similar ocean-bearing worlds in the 2030s. Therefore, preparatory laboratory studies are essential in order to advance our understanding of surface processes which are relevant for the chemical complexity of icy grains found on icy moon exteriors, plumes and within interplanetary space. A cryogenic ultra-high vacuum (UHV) setup at Leiden University’s Laboratory for Astrophysics is used to explore the formation of complex organic molecules by energetic processing of Enceladus ice analogues. The latter is realised by using special lamps, a microwave discharge H2-flow lamp to generate VUV light (120-180 nm) and a Xe-arc lamp with an SED peaking approx. at λmax of the Sun. The UHV system can spectroscopically probe thin ices of varying composition and tem­­peratures to constrain physical and chemical processes occurring within the ice. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) monitors changes in the solid state by means of vibrational spectroscopy, while a mass spectrometer complementarily confirms the detection of gas-phase species which desorb from the ice during linear warming of the underlying substrate. Ices observed on Enceladus are mimicked in the laboratory at a temperature of 70 Kelvin and comprise mostly water (H2O) mixed with lesser amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and ammonia (NH3) [7]. Experimental irradiation studies of these mixed ices are presented which include, but are not limited to, the formation of complex organic molecules. In addition, UV-photolysis of CO2 rich ice is explored to study its lifetime on the surface of Enceladus, following the discovery of concentrated CO2 patches at the moon’s south pole [8]. These experimental results allow to investigate possible theories for the presence of volatiles on the surface of Enceladus such as plume deposition or gas seeping through fractures in the icy crust [9]. The increasing sensitivity and resolution of ground-based telescopes have enabled the detection of gas-phase complex organic molecules (COMs) across a variety of environments. Many of the detected species are expected to form on the icy surface of interstellar grains and transfer later into the gas phase. Therefore, icy material is regarded as a primordial source of COMs in the ISM. Upcoming JWST observations of interstellar ices in star-forming regions will reveal IR features of frozen molecules with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. To identify COM features in the JWST data, lab IR spectra of ices for conditions that simulate interstellar environments are needed. This work presents FTIR spectra (500-4000 cm$^{-1}$/20-2.5$\mu$m, with a resolution of 1 cm$^{-1}$) of methyl cyanide (CH$_3$CN, aka acetonitrile) mixed with H$_2$O, CO, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, and NH$_3$, at temperatures from 15-150 K. The refractive index of pure amorphous CH$_3$CN ice at 15K and the band strength, peak position, and FWHM of selected IR bands are also measured. These bands are: the CH$_3$ sym stretching at 2940.9 cm$^{-1}$, the CN stretching at 2252.2 cm$^{-1}$, a combination of modes at 1448.3 cm$^{-1}$ , the CH$_3$ antisym def. at 1410 cm$^{-1}$ , the CH$_3$ sym def. at 1374.5 cm$^{-1}$, and the CH$_3$ rock at 1041.6 cm$^{-1}$. The lab spectra of CH$_3$CN are compared to observations of ices toward W33A and three low-mass YSOs. Since an unambiguous identification of CH$_3$CN is not possible, upper limits for the CH$_3$CN column density are determined as $\leq 2.4\times 10^{17}$ molecules cm$^{-2}$ for W33A and $5.2 \times 10^{16}$, $1.9\times 10^{17}$, and $3.8\times 10^{16}$ molecules cm$^{-2}$ for EC92, IRAS 03235, and L1455 IRS3, respectively. The detection of the amino acid glycine and its amine precursor methylamine on the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko by the Rosetta mission provides strong evidence for a cosmic origin of prebiotics on Earth. How and when such complex organic molecules form along the process of star- and planet-formation remains debated. We report the first laboratory detection of glycine formed in the solid phase through atom and radical-radical addition surface reactions under cold dense interstellar cloud conditions. Our experiments, supported by astrochemical models, suggest that glycine forms without the need for energetic irradiation, such as UV photons and cosmic rays, in interstellar water-rich ices, where it remains preserved, in a much earlier star-formation stage than previously assumed. We also confirm that solid methylamine is an important side-reaction product. A prestellar formation of glycine on ice grains provides the basis for a complex and ubiquitous prebiotic chemistry in space enriching the chemical content of planet-forming material., Preprint of the original submitted version

The vibrationally resolved spectra of the pyrene cation and doubly-dehydrogenated pyrene cation (C$_{16}$H$_{10}$$^{.+}$; Py$^+$ and C$_{16}$H$_{8}$$^{.+}$; ddPy$^+$) are presented. Infrared predissociation spectroscopy is employed to measure the vibrational spectrum of both species using a cryogenically cooled 22-pole ion trap. The spectrum of Py$^+$ allows a detailed comparison with harmonic and anharmonic density functional theory (DFT) calculated normal mode frequencies. The spectrum of ddPy$^+$ is dominated by absorption features from two isomers (4,5-ddPy$^+$ and 1,2-ddPy$^+$) with, at most, minor contributions from other isomers. These findings can be extended to explore the release of hydrogen from interstellar PAH species. It has been experimentally observed that water-ice-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) form radical cations when exposed to vacuum UV irradiation, whereas ammonia-embedded PAHs lead to the formation of radical anions. In this study, we explain this phenomenon by investigating the fundamental electronic differences between water and ammonia, the implications of these differences on the PAH-water and PAH-ammonia interaction, and the possible ionization pathways in these complexes using density functional theory (DFT) computations. In the framework of the Kohn-Sham molecular orbital (MO) theory, we show that the ionic state of the PAH photoproducts results from the degree of occupied-occupied MO mixing between the PAHs and the matrix molecules. When interacting with the PAH, the lone pair-type highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of water has poor orbital overlap and is too low in energy to mix with the filled π-orbitals of the PAH. As the lone-pair HOMO of ammonia is significantly higher in energy and has better overlap with filled π-orbitals of the PAH, the subsequent Pauli repulsion leads to mixed MOs with both PAH and ammonia character. By time-dependent DFT calculations, we demonstrate that the formation of mixed PAH-ammonia MOs opens alternative charge-transfer excitation pathways as now electronic density from ammonia can be transferred to unoccupied PAH levels, yielding anionic PAHs. As this pathway is much less available for water-embedded PAHs, charge transfer mainly occurs from localized PAH MOs to mixed PAH-water virtual levels, leading to cationic PAHs.

This work aims to constrain the abundances of interstellar amides, by searching for this group of prebiotic molecules in the intermediate-mass protostar Serpens SMM1-a. ALMA observations are conducted toward Serpens SMM1. A spectrum is extracted toward the SMM1-a position and analyzed with the CASSIS line analysis software for the presence of characteristic rotational lines of a number of amides and other molecules. NH$_{2}$CHO, NH$_{2}$CHO $\nu_{12}$=1, NH$_{2}^{13}$CHO, CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ $\nu$=0,1, CH$_{2}$DOH, CH$_{3}$CHO, and CH$_{3}$C(O)CH$_{3}$ are securely detected, while trans-NHDCHO, NH$_{2}$CDO, CH$_{3}$NHCHO $\nu$=0,1, CH$_{3}$COOH, and HOCH$_{2}$CHO are tentatively identified. The results of this work are compared with detections presented in the literature. A uniform CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$/NH$_{2}$CHO ratio is found for a group of interstellar sources with vast physical differences. A similar ratio is seen for CH$_{3}$NHCHO, based on a smaller data sample. The D/H ratio of NH$_{2}$CHO is about 1--3\% and is close to values found in the low-mass source IRAS~16293--2422B. The formation of CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ and NH$_{2}$CHO is likely linked. Formation of these molecules on grain surfaces during the dark cloud stage is a likely scenario. The high D/H ratio of NH$_{2}$CHO is also seen as an indication that these molecules are formed on icy dust grains. Several diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have profiles with resolved sub-peaks that resemble rotational bands of large molecules. Analysis of these profiles can constrain the sizes and geometries of the DIB carriers, especially if the profiles exhibit clear variations along lines of sight probing different physical conditions. Using the extensive data set from the EDIBLES survey we searched for systematic variations in the peak-to-peak separation of these sub-peaks for the $\lambda\lambda$5797, 6379, and 6614 DIBs in lines of sight with a single dominant interstellar cloud. We used the spectra of twelve single-cloud sight lines to measure the peak-to-peak separation in the band profile substructures for these DIBs. We adopted the rotational contour formalism to infer the rotational constant for each DIB carrier and the rotational excitation temperature in the sight lines. We compared these to rotational constants for linear and spherical molecules to estimate the DIB carrier sizes. All three DIBs have peak separations that vary systematically between lines of sight, indicating correlated changes in the rotational excitation temperatures. We derived $B_{6614}$=$(22.2\pm8.9)\times 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$, consistent with previous estimates. Assuming a similar rotational temperature for the $\lambda$6614 DIB carrier and assuming a linear carrier, we found B$_{5797}^{\rm linear}=(5.1\pm2.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and B$_{6379}^{\rm linear} =(2.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. If the carriers of those DIBs however are spherical species, their rotational constants are half that value, $B_{5797}^{\rm spherical} = (2.6\pm1.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and $B_{6379}^{\rm spherical} = (1.1\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. We estimate molecule sizes that range from 7--9 carbon atoms ($\lambda$6614 carrier, linear) to 77--114 carbon atoms ($\lambda$6379, spherical)., Comment: 21 pages, 56 figures. Methane is typically thought to be formed in the solid state on the surface of cold interstellar icy grain mantles via the successive atomic hydrogenation of a carbon atom. In the current work we investigate the potential role of molecular hydrogen in the CH$_4$ reaction network. We make use of an ultra-high vacuum cryogenic setup combining an atomic carbon atom beam and both atomic and/or molecular beams of hydrogen and deuterium on a H$_2$O ice. These experiments lead to the formation of methane isotopologues detected in situ through reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy. Most notably, CH$_4$ is formed in an experiment combining C atoms with H$_2$ on amorphous solid water, albeit slower than in experiments with H atoms present. Furthermore, CH$_2$D$_2$ is detected in an experiment of C atoms with H$_2$ and D$_2$ on H$_2$O ice. CD$_4$, however, is only formed when D atoms are present in the experiment. These findings have been rationalized by means of computational chemical insights. This leads to the following conclusions: a) the reaction C + H$_2$ -> CH$_2$ can take place, although not barrierless in the presence of water, b) the reaction CH + H$_2$ -> CH$_3$ is barrierless, but has not yet been included in astrochemical models, c) the reactions CH$_2$ + H$_2$ -> CH$_3$ + H and CH$_3$ + H$_2$ -> CH$_4$ + H can take place only via a tunneling mechanism and d) molecular hydrogen possibly plays a more important role in the solid-state formation of methane than assumed so far., Submitted to ApJ

Context. The Rosetta and Giotto missions investigated the composition of the cometary comae of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and 1P/Halley, respectively. In both cases, a surprisingly large amount of molecular oxygen (O2) was detected and was well correlated with the observed abundances of H2O. Laboratory experiments simulating chemical processing for various astronomical environments already showed that formation of solid state O2 is linked to water. However, a quantitative study of O2 formation upon UV photolysis of pure H2O and H2O dominated interstellar ice analogues is still missing. Aims. The goal of this work is to investigate whether the UV irradiation of H2O-rich ice produced at the earliest stages of star formation is efficient enough to explain the observed abundance of cometary O2. Methods. The photochemistry of pure H216O (H218O) as well as mixed H2O:CO2 (ratio of 100:11, 100:22, 100:44) and H2O:CO2:O2 (100:22:2) ices was quantified during UV photolysis. Laser desorption post-ionisation time of flight mass spectrometry (LDPI TOF MS) was used to probe molecular abundances in the ice as a function of UV fluence. Results. Upon UV photolysis of pure amorphous H2O ice, deposited at 20 K, formation of O2 and H2O2 is observed at abundances of, respectively, (0.9 ± 0.2)% (O2/H2O) and (1.3 ± 0.3)% (H2O2/H2O). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative characterisation of the kinetics of this process. During the UV photolysis of mixed H2O:CO2 ices, the formation of the relative amount of O2 compared to H2O increases to a level of (1.6 ± 0.4)% (for H2O:CO2 ratio of 100:22), while the (H2O2/H2O) yield remains similar to experiments with pure water. In an ice enriched with O2 (2%), the O2 level increases up to 7% with regard to H2O, at low UV fluence, which is higher than expected on the basis of the enrichment alone. The resulting O2/H2O values derived for the H2O and H2O:CO2 ices may account for a (substantial) part of the high oxygen amounts found in the comae of 67P and 1P.

Methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH, MM) has been identified through gas-phase signatures in both high- and low-mass star-forming regions. This molecule is expected to form upon hydrogen addition and abstraction reactions in CO-rich ice through radical recombination of CO hydrogenation products. The goal of this work is to investigate experimentally and theoretically the most likely solid-state MM reaction channel -- the recombination of CH2OH and CH3O radicals -- for dark interstellar cloud conditions and to compare the formation efficiency with that of other species that were shown to form along the CO-hydrogenation line. Hydrogen atoms and CO or H2CO molecules are co-deposited on top of the predeposited H2O ice to mimic the conditions associated with the beginning of 'rapid' CO freeze-out. Quadrupole mass spectrometry is used to analyze the gas-phase COM composition following a temperature programmed desorption. Monte Carlo simulations are used for an astrochemical model comparing the MM formation efficiency with that of other COMs. Unambiguous detection of newly formed MM has been possible both in CO+H and H2CO+H experiments. The resulting abundance of MM with respect to CH3OH is about 0.05, which is about 6 times less than the value observed toward NGC 6334I and about 3 times less than the value reported for IRAS 16293B. The results of astrochemical simulations predict a similar value for the MM abundance with respect to CH3OH factors ranging between 0.06 to 0.03. We find that MM is formed by co-deposition of CO and H2CO with H atoms through the recombination of CH2OH and CH3O radicals. In both the experimental and modeling studies, the efficiency of this channel alone is not sufficient to explain the observed abundance of MM. These results indicate an incomplete knowledge of the reaction network or the presence of alternative solid-state or gas-phase formation mechanisms., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The successive addition of H atoms to CO in the solid phase has been hitherto regarded as the primary route to form methanol in dark molecular clouds. However, recent Monte Carlo simulations of interstellar ices alternatively suggested the radical-molecule H-atom abstraction reaction CH3O + H2CO -> CH3OH + HCO, in addition to CH3O + H -> CH3OH, as a very promising and possibly dominating (70 - 90 %) final step to form CH3OH in those environments. Here, we compare the contributions of these two steps leading to methanol by experimentally investigating hydrogenation reactions on H2CO and D2CO ices, which ensures comparable starting points between the two scenarios. The experiments are performed under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and astronomically relevant temperatures, with H:H2CO (or D2CO) flux ratios of 10:1 and 30:1. The radical-molecule route in the partially deuterated scenario, CHD2O + D2CO -> CHD2OD + DCO, is significantly hampered by the isotope effect in the D-abstraction process, and can thus be used as an artifice to probe the efficiency of this step. We observe a significantly smaller yield of D2CO + H products in comparison to H2CO + H, implying that the CH3O-induced abstraction route must play an important role in the formation of methanol in interstellar ices. Reflection-Absorption InfraRed Spectroscopy (RAIRS) and Temperature Programmed Desorption-Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (TPD-QMS) analyses are used to quantify the species in the ice. Both analytical techniques indicate constant contributions of ~80 % for the abstraction route in the 10 - 16 K interval, which agrees well with the Monte Carlo conclusions. C$_3$, a pure carbon chain molecule that has been identified in different astronomical environments, is considered a good probe of kinetic temperatures through observation of transitions involving its low-lying bending mode ($\nu_2$) in its ground electronic state. The present laboratory work aims to investigate this bending mode with multiple quanta of excitation by combining recordings of high resolution optical and infrared spectra of C$_3$ produced in discharge experiments. The optical spectra of rovibronic (A $^1\Pi_u -$ X $^1\Sigma_g^+$) transitions have been recorded by laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy using a single longitude mode optical parametric oscillator as narrow bandwidth laser source at the University of Science and Technology of China. 36 bands originating from X(0$v_2$0), $v_2 = 0-5$, are assigned. The mid-infrared spectrum of the rovibrational $\nu_3$ band has been recorded by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy using a globar source on the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. The spectrum reveals hot bands involving up to 5 quanta of excitation in $\nu_2$. From combining analyses of all the presently recorded spectra and literature data, accurate rotational parameters and absolute energy levels of C$_3$, in particular for states involving the bending mode, are determined. A single PGOPHER file containing all available data involving the X and A states (literature and present study) is used to fit all the data. The spectroscopic information derived from this work enables new interstellar searches for C$_3$, not only in the infrared and optical regions investigated here but also notably in the $\nu_2$ band region (around 63 cm$^{-1}$) where vibrational satellites can now be accurately predicted. We report new computational and experimental evidence of an efficient and astrochemically relevant formation route to formaldehyde (H2CO). This simplest carbonylic compound is central to the formation of complex organics in cold interstellar clouds and is generally regarded to be formed by the hydrogenation of solid-state carbon monoxide. We demonstrate H2CO formation via the reaction of carbon atoms with amorphous solid water. Crucial to our proposed mechanism is a concerted proton transfer catalyzed by the water hydrogen bonding network. Consequently, the reactions 3C + H2O → 3HCOH and 1HCOH → 1H2CO can take place with low or without barriers, contrary to the high-barrier traditional internal hydrogen migration. These low barriers (or the absence thereof) explain the very small kinetic isotope effect in our experiments when comparing the formation of H2CO to D2CO. Our results reconcile the disagreement found in the literature on the reaction route C + H2O → H2CO.

Rotationally resolved spectra of the C 2 Σ + -X 2 Π electronic system of the CH radical were measured using cavity ring-down spectroscopy in supersonically expanding, planar hydrocarbon plasma. The experimental conditions allowed the study of highly excited rotational levels starting from vibrationally excited states. Here we present some 200+ new or more accurately recorded transitions in the 0–0, 1–1 and 2–2 vibronic bands in the ultraviolet between 30900 and 32400 cm −1 (324–309 nm). The resulting data, compared to earlier measurements, allows for the determination of more precise molecular constants for each vibrational state and therefore more precise equilibrium values. From this an equilibrium bond length of 1.115798(17)Å for the C 2 Σ + state is determined. A comprehensive list with observed transitions for each band has been compiled from all available experimental studies and constraints are placed on the predissociation lifetimes.

Context. Infrared spectroscopy of star and planet forming regions is at the dawn of a new age with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. In support of these observations, laboratory spectra are required to identify complex organic molecules in the ices that cover the dust grains in these regions. Aims. This study aims to provide reference spectra to firmly detect icy methyl formate in the different stages of star and planet forming regions. Methyl formate is mixed in astronomically relevant matrices, and the peak positions, FWHMs, and relative band intensities are characterized for different temperatures to provide an analytical tool for astronomers. Methods. Methyl formate is deposited at 15 K under high-vacuum conditions. Specifically, methyl formate is deposited pure and mixed with CO, H$_2$CO, CH$_3$OH, H$_2$O, and CO:H$_2$CO:CH$_3$OH combined. Throughout the experiment infrared spectra are acquired with a FTIR spectrometer in the range from 4000-500 cm$^{-1}$ (2.5-20 $\mu$m) at a spectral resolution of 0.5 cm$^{-1}$. Results. We present the characterization of five solid-state methyl formate vibrational modes in pure and astronomically relevant ice matrices. The five selected vibrational modes, namely the C=O stretch, C$-$O stretch, CH$_3$ rocking, O$-$CH$_3$ stretching, and OCO deformation, are best suited for a JWST identification of methyl formate. For each of these vibrational modes, and each of the mixtures the TvS heatmaps, peak position versus FWHM, and relative band intensities are given. Additionally, the acquired reference spectra of methyl formate are compared with Spitzer observations of HH 46. A tentative detection of methyl formate provides an upper limit to the column density of $1.7\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$, corresponding to an upper limit relative to water of $\leq 2.2\%$ and $\leq 40\%$ with respect to methanol., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We report new computational and experimental evidence of an efficient and astrochemically relevant formation route to formaldehyde (H$_2$CO). This simplest carbonylic compound is central to the formation of complex organics in cold interstellar clouds, and is generally regarded to be formed by the hydrogenation of solid-state carbon monoxide. We demonstrate H$_2$CO formation via the reaction of carbon atoms with amorphous solid water. Crucial to our proposed mechanism is a concerted proton transfer catalyzed by the water hydrogen bonding network. Consequently, the reactions $^3$C + H$_2$O -> $^3$HCOH and $^1$HCOH -> $^1$H$_2$CO can take place with low or without barriers, contrary to the high-barrier traditional internal hydrogen migration. These low barriers or absence thereof explain the very small kinetic isotope effect in our experiments when comparing the formation of H$_2$CO to D$_2$CO. The simultaneous detection of organic molecules of the form C$_2$H$_{\text{n}}$O, such as ketene (CH$_2$CO), acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO), and ethanol (CH$_3$CH$_2$OH), toward early star-forming regions offers hints of shared chemical history. Several reaction routes have been proposed and experimentally verified under various interstellar conditions to explain the formation pathways involved. Most noticeably, the non-energetic processing of C$_2$H$_2$ ice with OH-radicals and H-atoms was shown to provide formation routes to ketene, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and vinyl alcohol (CH$_2$CHOH) along the H$_2$O formation sequence on grain surfaces. In this work, the non-energetic formation scheme is extended with laboratory measurements focusing on the energetic counterpart, induced by cosmic rays penetrating the H$_2$O-rich ice mantle. The focus here is on the H$^+$ radiolysis of interstellar C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ice analogs at 17 K. Ultra-high vacuum experiments were performed to investigate the 200 keV H$^+$ radiolysis chemistry of predeposited C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ices, both as mixed and layered geometries. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor in situ newly formed species as a function of the accumulated energy dose (or H$^+$ fluence). The infrared (IR) spectral assignments are further confirmed in isotope labeling experiments using H$_2$$^{18}$O. The energetic processing of C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ice not only results in the formation of (semi-) saturated hydrocarbons (C$_2$H$_4$ and C$_2$H$_6$) and polyynes as well as cumulenes (C$_4$H$_2$ and C$_4$H$_4$), but it also efficiently forms O-bearing COMs, including vinyl alcohol, ketene, acetaldehyde, and ethanol, for which the reaction cross-section and product composition are derived. In this work, we characterize – for the first time – in the gas phase infrared spectra of three isomeric Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) cations of C24H14 composition that belong to distinctly different symmetry groups ( C 2 h , C s and C 1 ). Mid-infrared (Mid-IR) spectra are recorded by means of infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy at the free electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX) laboratory. The measured infrared (IR) band positions compare reasonably well with density functional theory (DFT) calculated values. The number of IR active bands increases as the symmetry of the molecule lowers. The IRMPD spectra of irregular PAHs are found to be dense and do not resemble the sharp signatures typical of astronomical IR bands, but rather look like the broad plateau on which these are perched. This lends credit to the GrandPAH hypothesis that suggests that small and irregular PAHs are weeded out by the strong interstellar radiation field and only large regular PAHs remain.

Context. Many C-, O-, and H-containing complex organic molecules (COMs) have been observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) and their formation has been investigated in laboratory experiments. An increasing number of recent detections of large N-bearing COMs motivates our experimental investigation of their chemical origin. Aims. We investigate the potential role of acetonitrile (CH3CN) as a parent molecule to N-bearing COMs, motivated by its omnipresence in the ISM and structural similarity to another well-known precursor species, CH3OH. The aim of the present work is to characterize the chemical complexity that can result from vacuum UV photolysis of a pure CH3CN ice and a more realistic mixture of H2O:CH3CN. Methods. The CH3CN ice and H2O:CH3CN ice mixtures were UV irradiated at 20 K. Laser desorption post ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to detect the newly formed COMs in situ. We examined the role of water in the chemistry of interstellar ices through an analysis of two different ratios of H2O:CH3CN (1:1 and 20:1). Results. We find that CH3CN is an excellent precursor to the formation of larger nitrogen-containing COMs, including CH3CH2CN, NCCN/CNCN, and NCCH2CH2CN. During the UV photolysis of H2O:CH3CN ice, the water derivatives play a key role in the formation of molecules with functional groups of: imines, amines, amides, large nitriles, carboxylic acids, and alcohols. Context. Young stellar objects (YSOs) and their environments are generally geometrically and dynamically challenging to model, and the corresponding chemistry is often dominated by regions in non-thermal equilibrium. In addition, modern astrochemical models have to consider not only gas-phase reactions, but also solid-state reactions on icy dust grains. Solving the geometrical, physical, and chemical boundary conditions simultaneously requires a high computational effort and still runs the risk of false predictions due to the intrinsically non-linear effects that can occur. As a first step, solving problems of reduced complexity is helpful to guide more sophisticated approaches. Aims. The objective of this work is to test a model that uses shell-like structures (i.e., assuming a power-law number density and temperature gradient of the environment surrounding the YSO) to approximate the geometry and physical structure of YSOs, that in turn utilizes an advanced chemical model that includes gas-phase and solid-state reactions to model the chemical abundances of key species. A special focus is set on formaldehyde (H2CO) and methanol (CH3OH) as these molecules can be traced in the gas phase but are produced on icy dust grains. Furthermore, this kind of molecule is believed to be key to understanding the abundance of more complex species. We compare the influence of the geometry of the object on the molecular abundances with the effect induced by its chemistry. Methods. We set up a model that combines a grain-gas phase chemical model with a physical model of YSOs. The model ignores jets, shocks, and external radiation fields and concentrates on the physical conditions of spherically symmetric YSOs with a density and temperature gradient derived from available spectral energy distribution observations in the infrared. In addition, new observational data are presented using the APEX 12 m and the IRAM 30 m telescopes. Formaldehyde and methanol transitions have been searched for in three YSOs (R CrA-IRS 5A, C1333-IRAS 2A, and L1551-IRS 5) that can be categorized as Class 0 and Class 1 objects, and in the pre-stellar core L1544. The observed abundances of H2CO and CH3OH are compared with those calculated by the spherical physical-chemical model. Results. Compared to a standard “ρ and T constant” model, i.e., a homogeneous (flat) density and temperature distribution, using number density and temperature gradients results in reduced abundances for the CO hydrogenation products formaldehyde and methanol. However, this geometric effect is generally not large, and depends on the source and on the molecular species under investigation. Although the current model uses simplified geometric assumptions the observed abundances of H2CO and CH3OH are well reproduced for the quiescent Class 1 object R CrA-IRS 5A. Our model tends to overestimate formaldehyde and methanol abundances for sources in early evolutionary stages, like the pre-stellar core L1544 or NGC 1333-IRS 2A (Class 0). Observational results on hydrogen peroxide and water that have also been predicted by our model are discussed elsewhere.

Complex organic molecules (COMs) are thought to form on icy dust grains in the earliest phase of star formation. The evolution of these COMs from the youngest Class 0/I protostellar phases toward the more evolved Class II phase is still not fully understood. Since planet formation seems to start early, and mature disks are too cold for characteristic COM emission lines, studying the inventory of COMs on solar system scales in the Class 0/I stage is relevant. ALMA Band 3 (3 mm) and Band 6 (1 mm) observations are obtained of seven Class 0 protostars in the Perseus and Serpens star-forming regions. By modeling the inner protostellar region using 'LTE' models, the excitation temperature and column densities are determined for several O-bearing COMs. B1-c, B1-bS, and Serpens S68N show COM emission, i.e, three out of the seven sources. No clear correlation seems to exist between the occurrence of COMs and source luminosity. The abundances of several COMs with respect to CH3OH are remarkably similar for the three COM-rich sources, and to IRAS 16293-2422B and HH 212. For other COMs the abundances differ by up to an order of magnitude, indicating that local source conditions are case determining. B1-c hosts a cold ($T_{ex}\approx60$ K), more extended component of COM emission with a column density of typically a few % of the warm/hot ($T_{ex}\sim 200$ K), central component. A D/H ratio of 1-3 % is derived based on the CH2DOH/CH3OH ratio suggesting a temperature of $\sim$15~K during the formation of methanol. This ratio is consistent with other low-mass protostars. Future mid-infrared facilities such as JWST/MIRI will be essential to directly observe COM ices. Combining this with a larger sample of COM-rich sources with ALMA will allow for directly linking ice and gas-phase abundances in order to constrain the routes that produce and maintain chemical complexity during the star formation process., Accepted to A&A, 44 pages, 17 figures

We present the photoionization dynamics of the C

Context: In the laboratory, hydrogen peroxide (HOOH) was proven to be an intermediate product in the solid-state reaction scheme that leads to the formation of water on icy dust grains. When HOOH desorbs from the icy grains, it can be detected in the gas phase. In combination with water detections, it may provide additional information on the water reaction network. Hydrogen peroxide has previously been found toward $\rho$ Oph A. However, further searches for this molecule in other sources failed. Hydrogen peroxide plays a fundamental role in the understanding of solid-state water formation and the overall water reservoir in young stellar objects (YSOs). Without further HOOH detections, it is difficult to assess and develop suitable chemical models that properly take into account the formation of water on icy surfaces. Aims: The objective of this work is to identify HOOH in YSOs and thereby constrain the grain surface water formation hypothesis. Methods: Using an astrochemical model based on previous work in combination with a physical model of YSOs, the sources R CrA-IRS\,5A, NGCC1333-IRAS\,2A, L1551-IRS\,5, and L1544 were identified as suitable candidates for an HOOH detection. Long integration times on the APEX 12m and IRAM 30m telescopes were applied to search for HOOH signatures in these sources. Results: None of the four sources under investigation showed convincing spectral signatures of HOOH. The upper limit for HOOH abundance based on the noise level at the frequency positions of this molecule for the source R CrA-IRS\,5A was close to the predicted value. For NGC1333-IRAS 2A, L1544, and L1551-IRS\,5, the model overestimated the hydrogen peroxide abundances., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Infrared bands at 3.3, 6.2, 7.6, 7.8, 8.6, and 11.2 μm have been attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and are observed toward a large number of galactic and extragalactic sources. Some interstellar PAHs possibly contain five-membered rings in their honeycomb carbon structure. The inclusion of such pentagon defects can occur during PAH formation, or as large PAHs are eroded by photo-dissociation to ultimately yield fullerenes. Pentagon formation is a process that is associated with the bowling of the PAH plane, that is, the ability to identify PAH pentagons in space holds the potential to directly link PAHs to cage and fullerene structures. It has been hypothesized that infrared (IR) activity around 1100 cm−1 may be a spectral marker for interstellar pentagons. We present an experimentally measured gas-phase IR absorption spectrum of the pentagon-containing rubicene cation (C26H14•+) to investigate if this band is present. The NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database is scrutinized to see whether other rubicene-like species show IR activity in this wavelength range. We find that a specific molecular characteristic is responsible for this IR band. Namely, the vibrational motion attributed to this IR activity involves pentagon-containing harbors. An attempt to find this specific mode in Spitzer observations is undertaken and tentative detections around 9.3 μm are made toward the reflection nebula NGC 7023 and the H II-region IRAS 12063-6259. Simulated emission spectra are used to derive upper limits for the contributions of rubicene-like pentagonal PAH species to the IR band at 6.2 μm toward these sources.

Methane is one of the simplest stable molecules that is both abundant and widely distributed across space. It is thought to have partial origin from interstellar molecular clouds, which are near the beginning of the star formation cycle. Observational surveys of CH$_4$ ice towards low- and high-mass young stellar objects showed that much of the CH$_4$ is expected to be formed by the hydrogenation of C on dust grains, and that CH$_4$ ice is strongly correlated with solid H$_2$O. Yet, this has not been investigated under controlled laboratory conditions, as carbon-atom chemistry of interstellar ice analogues has not been experimentally realized. In this study, we successfully demonstrate with a C-atom beam implemented in an ultrahigh vacuum apparatus the formation of CH$_4$ ice in two separate co-deposition experiments: C + H on a 10 K surface to mimic CH$_4$ formation right before H$_2$O ice is formed on the dust grain, and C + H + H$_2$O on a 10 K surface to mimic CH$_4$ formed simultaneously with H$_2$O ice. We confirm that CH$_4$ can be formed by the reaction of atomic C and H, and that the CH$_4$ formation rate is 2 times greater when CH$_4$ is formed within a H$_2$O-rich ice. This is in agreement with the observational finding that interstellar CH$_4$ and H$_2$O form together in the polar ice phase, i.e., when C- and H-atoms simultaneously accrete with O-atoms on dust grains. For the first time, the conditions that lead to interstellar CH$_4$ (and CD$_4$) ice formation are reported, and can be incorporated into astrochemical models to further constrain CH$_4$ chemistry in the interstellar medium and in other regions where CH$_4$ is inherited.

Context. In cold regions of the interstellar medium with intense ultraviolet radiation fields, photodesorption has been suggested as a nonthermal desorption mechanism promoting the transition of molecules from the solid state to the gas phase. Laboratory experiments measuring photodesorption rates are crucial in attempting to explain high molecular gas phase abundances of species that are expected to form in the solid state, such as methane, methanol, and acetonitrile, and to aid astrochemical modeling. Due to the convoluted competition between photodesorption and photoconversion, it is far from trivial to derive accurate photodesorption rates. Aims. The aim of this study is to apply a new methodology to discriminate between the two processes. The method has been validated using the well-studied case of CO and extended to CH4, CH3OH, and CH3CN. Methods. Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV; photon energy of 7–10.2 eV) irradiated ices at 20 K are studied, first as a pure CH4, CH3OH, or CH3CN ice and subsequently with an Ar coating on top. The latter is transparent to the VUV photons (wavelength below 200 nm), but it quenches the photodesorption process. Comparing the laser desorption post ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry of the ices with and without the Ar coating provides information on the different interactions of the VUV photons with the ice. Results. The newly developed experimental technique allowed for a derivation of photodesorption rates for ices at 20 K of: CO (3.1 ± 0.3)×10−3 mol. photon−1, CH4 (3.1 ± 0.5)×10−2 mol. photon−1, and upper limits for CH3OH (< 6 × 10−5 mol. photon−1) and CH3CN (< 7.4 × 10−4 mol. photon−1); in the latter case, no literature values have been reported yet. The newly introduced approach provides more insight into the photodesorption process, in particular, for commonly observed complex organic molecules (COMs). Photoconversion cross sections are presented in the 7–10.2 eV range. The possible role of photodesorption and photoconversion in the formation of interstellar COMs is discussed.

Molecules with an amide functional group resemble peptide bonds, the molecular bridges that connect amino acids, and may thus be relevant in processes that lead to the formation of life. In this study, the solid state formation of some of the smallest amides is investigated in the laboratory. To this end, CH$_{4}$:HNCO ice mixtures at 20 K are irradiated with far-UV photons, where the radiation is used as a tool to produce the radicals required for the formation of the amides. Products are identified and investigated with infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption mass spectrometry. The laboratory data show that NH$_{2}$CHO, CH$_{3}$NCO, NH$_{2}$C(O)NH$_{2}$, CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ and CH$_{3}$NH$_{2}$ can simultaneously be formed. The NH$_{2}$CO radical is found to be key in the formation of larger amides. In parallel, ALMA observations towards the low-mass protostar IRAS 16293-2422B are analysed in search of CH$_{3}$NHCHO (N-methylformamide) and CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ (acetamide). CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ is tentatively detected towards IRAS 16293-2422B at an abundance comparable with those found towards high-mass sources. The combined laboratory and observational data indicates that NH$_{2}$CHO and CH$_{3}$C(O)NH$_{2}$ are chemically linked and form in the ice mantles of interstellar dust grains. Simple and complex organic molecules (COMs) are observed along different phases of star and planet formation and have been successfully identified in prestellar environments such as dark and translucent clouds. Yet the picture of organic molecule formation at those earliest stages of star formation is not complete and an important reason is the lack of specific laboratory experiments that simulate carbon atom addition reactions on icy surfaces of interstellar grains. Here we present experiments in which CO molecules as well as C- and H-atoms are co-deposited with H$_2$O molecules on a 10 K surface mimicking the ongoing formation of an "H$_2$O-rich" ice mantle. To simulate the effect of impacting C-atoms and resulting surface reactions with ice components, a specialized C-atom beam source is used, implemented on SURFRESIDE$^3$, an UHV cryogenic setup. Formation of ketene (CH$_2$CO) in the solid state is observed "in situ" by means of reflection absorption IR spectroscopy. C$^1$$^8$O and D isotope labelled experiments are performed to further validate the formation of ketene. Data analysis supports that CH$_2$CO is formed through C-atom addition to a CO-molecule, followed by successive hydrogenation transferring the formed :CCO into ketene. Efficient formation of ketene is in line with the absence of an activation barrier in C+CO reaction reported in the literature. We also discuss and provide experimental evidence for the formation of acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO) and possible formation of ethanol (CH$_3$CH$_2$OH), two COM derivatives of CH$_2$CO hydrogenation. We present a combined experimental and ab initio study on the jet-cooled high-resolution infrared spectra of the ν1 (acetylenic stretch) fundamental band for three isotopologues of propyne: 13CH312C≡12CH, 12CH313C≡12CH, and 12CH312C≡13CH. The experimental spectra are recorded in natural abundance using a continuous supersonic expansion of regular propyne diluted in argon and helium, in combination with continuous wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy (cw-CRDS). The fully rotationally resolved K’ = 0 and 1 subbands of all three monosubstituted 13C isotopologues have been measured near 3330 cm–1, and their spectroscopic analysis is presented here for the first time. The assignment of the bands and perturbation analysis are assisted by high level ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T) level of theory, from which vibrational frequencies, rotational constants, and Fermi resonances are predicted for each isotopologue.

The first gas-phase infrared spectra of two isolated astronomically relevant and large PAH cations - diindenoperylene (DIP) and dicoronylene (DC) - in the 530$-$1800 cm$^{-1}$ (18.9$-$5.6 $\mu$m) range - are presented. Vibrational band positions are determined for comparison to the aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The spectra are obtained via infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy of ions stored in a quadrupole ion trap (QIT) using the intense and tunable radiation of the free electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX). DIP$^{+}$ shows its main absorption peaks at 737 (13.57), 800 (12.50), 1001 (9.99), 1070 (9.35), 1115 (8.97), 1152 (8.68), 1278 (7.83), 1420 (7.04) and 1550 (6.45) cm$^{-1}$($\mu$m), in good agreement with DFT calculations that are uniformly scaled to take anharmonicities into account. DC$^+$ has its main absorption peaks at 853 (11.72), 876 (11.42), 1032 (9.69), 1168 (8.56), 1300 (7.69), 1427 (7.01) and 1566 (6.39) cm$^{-1}$($\mu$m), that also agree well with the scaled DFT results presented here. The DIP$^+$ and DC$^+$ spectra are compared with the prominent infrared features observed towards NGC 7023. This results both in matches and clear deviations. Moreover, in the 11.0$-$14.0 $\mu$m region, specific bands can be linked to CH out-of-plane (oop) bending modes of different CH edge structures in large PAHs. The molecular origin of these findings and their astronomical relevance are discussed.

A long standing problem in astrochemistry is the inability of many current models to account for missing sulfur content. Many relatively simple species that may be good candidates to sequester sulfur have not been measured experimentally at the high spectral resolution necessary to enable radioastronomical identification. On the basis of new laboratory data, we report searches for the rotational lines in the microwave, millimeter, and sub-millimeter regions of the sulfur-containing hydrocarbon HCCSH. This simple species would appear to be a promising candidate for detection in space owing to the large dipole moment along its $b$-inertial axis, and because the bimolecular reaction between two highly abundant astronomical fragments (CCH and SH radicals) may be rapid. An inspection of multiple line surveys from the centimeter to the far-infrared toward a range of sources from dark clouds to high-mass star-forming regions, however, resulted in non-detections. An analogous search for the lowest-energy isomer, H$_2$CCS, is presented for comparison, and also resulted in non-detections. Typical upper limits on the abundance of both species relative to hydrogen are $10^{-9}$-$10^{-10}$. We thus conclude that neither isomer is a major reservoir of interstellar sulfur in the range of environments studied. Both species may still be viable candidates for detection in other environments or at higher frequencies, providing laboratory frequencies are available., Accepted in the Astrophysical Journal

A number of recent experimental studies have shown that solid-state complex organic molecules (COMs) can form under conditions that are relevant to the CO freeze-out stage in dense clouds. In this work, we show that alcohols can be formed well before the CO freeze-out stage (i.e., in the H2O-rich ice phase). This joint experimental and computational investigation shows that the isomers, n- and i-propanol (H3CCH2CH2OH and H3CCHOHCH3) and n- and i-propenol (H3CCHCHOH and H3CCOHCH2), can be formed in radical-addition reactions starting from propyne (H3CCCH) + OH at the low temperature of 10 K, where H3CCCH is one of the simplest representatives of stable carbon chains already identified in the interstellar medium (ISM). The resulting average abundance ratio of 1:1 for n-propanol:i-propanol is aligned with the conclusions from the computational work that the geometric orientation of strongly interacting species is influential to the extent of which 'mechanism' is participating, and that an assortment of geometries leads to an averaged-out effect. Three isomers of propanediol are also tentatively identified in the experiments. It is also shown that propene and propane (H3CCHCH2 and H3CCH2CH3) are formed from the hydrogenation of H3CCCH. Computationally-derived activation barriers give additional insight into what types of reactions and mechanisms are more likely to occur in the laboratory and in the ISM. Our findings not only suggest that the alcohols studied here share common chemical pathways and therefore can show up simultaneously in astronomical surveys, but also that their extended counterparts that derive from polyynes containing H3C(CC)nH structures may exist in the ISM. 1-propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH) is a three carbon-bearing representative of primary linear alcohols that may have its origin in the cold dark cores in interstellar space. To test this, we investigated in the laboratory whether 1-propanol ice can be formed along pathways possibly relevant to the prestellar core phase. We aim to show in a two-step approach that 1-propanol can be formed through reaction steps that are expected to take place during the heavy CO freeze-out stage by adding C2H2 into the CO + H hydrogenation network via the formation of propanal (CH3CH2CHO) as an intermediate and its subsequent hydrogenation. Temperature programmed desorption-quadrupole mass spectrometry (TPD-QMS) is used to identify the newly formed propanal and 1-propanol. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) is used as a complementary diagnostic tool. The mechanisms that can contribute to the formation of solid-state propanal and 1-propanol, as well as other organic compounds, during the heavy CO freeze-out stage are constrained by both laboratory experiments and theoretical calculations. Here it is shown that recombination of HCO radicals, formed upon CO hydrogenation, with radicals formed upon C2H2 processing - H2CCH and H3CCH2 - offers possible reaction pathways to solid-state propanal and 1-propanol formation. This extends the already important role of the CO hydrogenation chain in the formation of larger COMs (complex organic molecules). The results are used to compare with ALMA observations. The resulting 1-propanol:propanal ratio concludes an upper limit of < 0:35-0:55, which is complemented by computationally-derived activation barriers in addition to the experimental results., Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Context. In the near future, high spatial and spectral infrared (IR) data of star-forming regions obtained by the James Webb Space Telescope may reveal new solid-state features of various species, including more intriguing classes of chemical compounds. The identification of complex organic molecules (COMs) in the upcoming data will only be possible when laboratory IR ice spectra of these species under astronomically relevant conditions are available for comparison. For this purpose, systematic series of laboratory measurements are performed, providing high-resolution IR spectra of COMs. Here, spectra of pure methylamine (CH3NH2) and methylamine-containing ices are discussed. Aims. The work is aimed at characterizing the mid-IR (500–4000 cm−1, 20–2.5 μm) spectra of methylamine in pure and mixed ices to provide accurate spectroscopic data of vibrational bands that are most suited to trace this species in interstellar ices. Methods. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is used to record spectra of CH3NH2 in the pure form and mixed with H2O, CH4, and NH3, for temperatures ranging from 15 to 160 K. The IR spectra in combination with HeNe laser (632.8 nm) interference data of pure CH3NH2 ice was used to derive the IR band strengths of methylamine in pure and mixed ices. Results. The refractive index of amorphous methylamine ice at 15 K was determined as being 1.30 ± 0.01. Accurate spectroscopic information and band strength values are systematically presented for a large set of methylamine-containing ices and different temperatures. Selected bands are characterized and their use as methylamine tracers is discussed. The selected bands include the following: the CH3 antisymmetric stretch band at 2881.3 cm−1 (3.471 μm), the CH3 symmetric stretch band at 2791.9 cm−1 (3.582 μm), the CH3 antisymmetric deformation bands, at 1455.0 and 1478.6 cm−1 (6.873 and 6.761 μm), the CH3 symmetric deformation band at 1420.3 cm−1 (7.042 μm), and the CH3 rock at 1159.2 cm−1 (8.621 μm). Using the laboratory data recorded in this work and ground-based spectra of ices toward YSOs (Young Stellar Objects), upper-limits for the methylamine ice abundances are derived. In some of these YSOs, the methylamine abundance is less than 4% relative to H2O.

We present a laser spectroscopic study of the A 1 Π u – X 1 Σ g + transition of 13C mono-substituted C 3 in the 378–406 nm region. The 13 C 12 C 12 C and 12 C 13 C 12 C isotopologues are produced in a pulsed jet expansion, by DC discharging a gas mixture of ∼ 0.3% C2H2/Ar (with ∼ 1% 13C natural abundance). By using laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy, thirteen vibronic bands belonging to the A 1 Π u – X 1 Σ g + electronic transition have been recorded for 13 C 12 C 12 C and 12 C 13 C 12 C , eleven of which have not been reported before. The transitions cover the three fundamental vibrational modes ( ν 1 , ν 2 l , ν 3 ). For all the vibronic bands, the full width at half maximum of spectral lines is found to be narrower than 0.023 cm - 1 , allowing to determine the transition frequencies with an absolute accuracy of ∼ 0.003 cm - 1 . Moreover, rotational analyses of the high-resolution data have yielded accurate spectroscopic constants for the upper vibronic states studied here. The 100–000, 04+0–000 and 12−0–000 bands of 13 C 12 C 12 C , and the 02+0–000 and 04−0–000 bands of 12 C 13 C 12 C are found to be less blended by spectral features of 12 C 3 , and thus may be used for astronomical searches of 13 C 12 C 12 C and 12 C 13 C 12 C in the space.

A systematic study, using ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometry, is presented for the photo-dissociation processes of Bisanthenquinone (Bq) cations, C28H12O2+, a ketone substituted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH). The Bq cation fragments through sequential loss of the two neutral carbonyl (CO) units upon laser (626nm) irradiation, resulting in a PAH-like derivative C26H12+. Upon further irradiation, C26H12+ exhibits both stepwise dehydrogenation and C2/C2H2 loss fragmentation channels. Quantum chemistry calculations reveal a detailed picture for the first CO-loss, which involves a transition state with a barrier of ∼ 3.4 eV, which is lower than the energy required for the lowest H-loss pathway (∼ 5.0 eV). The barrier for the second CO-loss is higher (∼ 4.9 eV). The subsequent loss of this unit changes the Bq geometry from a planar to a bent one. It is concluded that the photodissociation mechanism of the substituted PAH cations studied here is site selective in the substituted subunit. This work also shows that an acetone substituted PAH cation is not photo-stable upon irradiation.

We present the first infrared (IR) gas phase spectrum of a large and astronomically relevant PAH cation (C$_{42}$H$_{18}$$^+$, HBC$^+$) and its di-cation (C$_{42}$H$_{18}$$^{2+}$, HBC$^{2+}$). The spectra are recorded via infrared multi-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy of ions stored in a quadrupole ion trap, using the intense infrared radiation of a free electron laser in the 530$-$1800 cm$^{-1}$ (5.6$-$18.9 $\mu$m) range. HBC$^{+}$ shows main intense absorption peaks at 762 (13.12), 1060 (9.43), 1192 (8.39), 1280 (7.81), 1379 (7.25) and 1530 (6.54) cm$^{-1}$($\mu$m), in good agreement with DFT calculations that after scaling to take the anharmonicities effect into account. HBC$^{2+}$ has its main absorption peaks at 660 (15.15), 766 (13.05), 1054 (9.49), 1176 (8.50), 1290 (7.75), 1370 (7.30) and 1530 (6.54) cm$^{-1}$($\mu$m). Given the similarity in the cationic and di-cationic spectra, we have not identified an obvious diagnostic signature to the presence of multiply charged PAHs in space. While experimental issues associated with the IRMPD technique preclude a detailed comparison with interstellar spectra, we do note that the strong bands of HBC$^+$ and HBC$^{2+}$ at $\sim$ 6.5, 7.7, 8.4 and 13.1 $\mu$m coincide with prominent aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). HBC has only trio CH groups and the out-of-plane CH bending mode of both HBC cations is measured at 13.1 $\mu$m, squarely in the range predicted by theory and previously found in studies of small (substituted) PAHs. This study therefore supports the use of AIBs observed in the 11$-$14 $\mu$m range as a diagnostic tool for the edge topology of large PAHs in space.

A systematic study, using ion trap time-of-flight mass spectrometry, is presented for the photo-fragmentation of methyl- and methoxy-substituted derivatives of HBC cations, (OCH3)6HBC + and (CH3)4(OCH3)2HBC + . Both substituted HBC cations fragment through sequential loss of CH3CO units upon laser (595nm) irradiation, resulting in a PAH-like derivative C36H12 + and a methyl-substituted PAH derivative C44H24 + , respectively. Upon ongoing irradiation, these species further fragment. For lower laser energy C44H24 + dehydrogenates and photo-fragments through CH3 and CHCH2 unit losses; for higher laser energy isomerization takes place, yielding a regular PAH-like configuration, and both stepwise dehydrogenation and C2/C2H2 loss pathways are found. C36H12 + follows largely this latter fragmentation scheme upon irradiation. It is concluded that the photo-dissociation mechanism of the substituted PAH cations studied here is site selective in the substituted subunit. This work also shows experimental evidence that photo-fragmentation of substituted PAHs may contribute to the formation in space of smaller species that are normally considered to form by merging atoms and molecules.

Context. Complex organic molecules (COMs) have been largely identified through their characteristic rotational transitions in the gas of interstellar and circumstellar regions. Although these species are formed in the icy mantles that cover dust grains, the most complex species that has been unambiguously identified in the solid-phase to date is methanol (CH3OH). With the upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), this situation may change. The higher sensitivity, spectral and spatial resolution of the JWST will allow for the probing of the chemical inventory of ices in star-forming regions. In order to identify features of solid-state molecules in astronomical spectra, laboratory infrared spectra of COMs within astronomically relevant conditions are required. This paper is part of a series of laboratory studies focusing on the infrared spectra of frozen COMs embedded in ice matrices. These reflect the environmental conditions in which COMs are thought to be found. Aims. This work is aimed at characterizing the infrared features of acetone mixed in ice matrices containing H2O, CO2, CO, CH4, and CH3OH for temperatures ranging between 15 K and 160 K. Changes in the band positions and shapes due to variations in the temperature, ice composition, and morphology are reported. This work also points out the IR features that are considered the best promising tracers when searching for interstellar acetone-containing ices. Methods. Acetone-containing ices were grown at 15 K under high-vacuum conditions and infrared (IR) spectra (500–4000 cm−1/20–2.5 μm, 0.5 cm−1 resolution) in transmission mode were recorded using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Spectra of the ices at higher temperatures are acquired during the heating of the sample (at a rate of 25 K h−1) up to 160 K. The changes in the infrared features for varying conditions were analyzed. Results. A large set of IR spectra of acetone-containing ices is presented and made available as a basis for interpreting current and future infrared astronomical spectra. The peak position and full width at half maximum of selected acetone bands have been measured for different ice mixtures and temperatures. The bands that are best suitable for acetone identification in astronomical spectra are: the C=O stretch mode, around 1710.3 cm−1 (5.847 μm), that lies in the 1715–1695 cm−1 (5.83–5.90 μm) range in the mixed ices; the CH3 symmetric deformation, around 1363.4 cm−1 (7.335 μm) that lies in the 1353–1373 cm−1 (7.28–7.39 μm) range in the mixed ices; and the CCC asymmetric stretch, around 1228.4 cm−1 (8.141 μm), that lies in the 1224–1245 cm−1 (8.16–8.03 μm) range in the mixed ices. The CCC asymmetric stretch band also exhibits potential as a remote probe of the ice temperature and composition; this feature is the superposition of two components that respond differently to temperature and the presence of CH3OH. All the spectra are available through the Leiden Ice Database.

We report cosmic ray ionization rates toward ten reddened stars studied within the framework of the EDIBLES (ESO Diffuse Interstellar Bands Large Exploration Survey) program, using the VLT-UVES. For each sightline, between two and ten individual rotational lines of OH+ have been detected in its (0,0) and (1,0) A3Π − X3Σ− electronic band system. This allows constraining of OH+ column densities toward different objects. Results are also presented for 28 additional sightlines for which only one or rather weak signals are found. An analysis of these data makes it possible to derive the primary cosmic ray ionization rate ζp in the targeted diffuse interstellar clouds. For the ten selected targets, we obtain a range of values for ζp equal to (3.9–16.4) × 10−16 s−1. These values are higher than the numbers derived in previous detections of interstellar OH+ in the far-infrared/submillimeter-wave regions and in other near-ultraviolet studies. This difference is a result of using new OH+ oscillator strength values and a more complete picture of all relevant OH+ formation and destruction routes (including the effect of proton recombinations on PAHs), and the relatively high N(OH+) seen toward those ten targets.

Recent advances in laboratory spectroscopy lead to the claim of ionized Buckminsterfullerene (C60+) as the carrier of two diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the near-infrared. However, irrefutable identification of interstellar C60+ requires a match between the wavelengths and the expected strengths of all absorption features detectable in the laboratory and in space. Here we present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectra of the region covering the C60+ 9348, 9365, 9428 and 9577 {\AA} absorption bands toward seven heavily-reddened stars. We focus in particular on searching for the weaker laboratory C60+ bands, the very presence of which has been a matter for recent debate. Using the novel STIS-scanning technique to obtain ultra-high signal-to-noise spectra without contamination from telluric absorption that afflicted previous ground-based observations, we obtained reliable detections of the (weak) 9365, 9428 {\AA} and (strong) 9577 {\AA} C60+ bands. The band wavelengths and strength ratios are sufficiently similar to those determined in the latest laboratory experiments that we consider this the first robust identification of the 9428 {\AA} band, and a conclusive confirmation of interstellar C60+., Comment: Published in ApJ Letters, April 2019, 875, L28

Formic acid (HCOOH) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are simple species that have been detected in the interstellar medium. The solid-state formation pathways of these species under experimental conditions relevant to prestellar cores are primarily based off of weak infrared transitions of the HOCO complex and usually pertain to the H2O-rich ice phase, and therefore more experimental data are desired. In this article, we present a new and additional solid-state reaction pathway that can form HCOOH and CO2 ice at 10 K 'non-energetically' in the laboratory under conditions related to the "heavy" CO freeze-out stage in dense interstellar clouds, i.e., by the hydrogenation of an H2CO:O2 ice mixture. This pathway is used to piece together the HCOOH and CO2 formation routes when H2CO or CO reacts with H and OH radicals. Temperature programmed desorption - quadrupole mass spectrometry (TPD-QMS) is used to confirm the formation and pathways of newly synthesized ice species as well as to provide information on relative molecular abundances. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) is additionally employed to characterize reaction products and determine relative molecular abundances. We find that for the conditions investigated in conjunction with theoretical results from the literature, H+HOCO and HCO+OH lead to the formation of HCOOH ice in our experiments. Which reaction is more dominant can be determined if the H+HOCO branching ratio is more constrained by computational simulations, as the HCOOH:CO2 abundance ratio is experimentally measured to be around 1.8:1. H+HOCO is more likely than OH+CO (without HOCO formation) to form CO2. Isotope experiments presented here further validate that H+HOCO is the dominant route for HCOOH ice formation in a CO-rich CO:O2 ice mixture that is hydrogenated. Emission bands from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) dominate the mid-infrared spectra of a wide variety of astronomical sources, encompassing nearly all stages of stellar evolution. Despite their similarities, details in band positions and shapes have allowed a classification of PAH emission to be developed. It has been suggested that this classification is in turn associated with the degree of photoprocessing of PAHs. Over the past decade, a more complete picture of the PAH interstellar life-cycle has emerged, in which a wide range of PAH species are formed during the later stages of stellar evolution. After this they are photoprocessed, increasing the relative abundance of the more stable (typically larger and compact) PAHs. For this work we have tested the effect of the symmetry, size, and structure of PAHs on their fragmentation pattern and infrared spectra by combining experiments at the free electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX) and quantum chemical computations. Applying this approach to the cations of four molecular species, perylene (C20H12), peropyrene (C26H14), ovalene (C32H14) and isoviolanthrene (C34H18), we find that a reduction of molecular symmetry causes the activation of vibrational modes in the 7–9 μm range. We show that the IR characteristics of less symmetric PAHs can help explain the broad band observed in the class D spectra, which are typically associated with a low degree of photoprocessing. Such large, nonsymmetrical irregular PAHs are currently largely missing from the NASA Ames PAH database. The band positions and shapes of the largest more symmetric PAH measured here, show the best resemblance with class A and B sources, representative of regions with high radiation fields and thus heavier photoprocessing. Furthermore, the dissociation patterns observed in the mass spectra hint to an enhanced stability of the carbon skeleton in more symmetric PAHs with respect to the irregular and less symmetric species, which tend to loose carbon containing units. Although not a direct proof, these findings are fully in line with the grandPAH hypothesis, which claims that symmetric large PAHs can survive as the radiation field increases, while their less symmetric counterparts are destroyed or converted to symmetric PAHs.
