Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs have the potential to steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using up to 49 superconducting qubits, we prepared low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model through coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In one dimension, we observed long-range quantum correlations and a ground-state fidelity of 0.86 for 18 qubits at the critical point. In two dimensions, we found mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we explored transport in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors.

Abstract

Undesired coupling to the surrounding environment destroys long-range correlations on quantum processors and hinders the coherent evolution in the nominally available computational space. This incoherent noise is an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. It has been shown that benchmarking Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) with Cross-Entropy Benchmarking (XEB) can provide a reliable estimate of the effective size of the Hilbert space coherently available. The extent to which the presence of noise can trivialize the outputs of a given quantum algorithm, i.e. making it spoofable by a classical computation, is an unanswered question. Here, by implementing an RCS algorithm we demonstrate experimentally that there are two phase transitions observable with XEB, which we explain theoretically with a statistical model. The first is a dynamical transition as a function of the number of cycles and is the continuation of the anti-concentration point in the noiseless case. The second is a quantum phase transition controlled by the error per cycle; to identify it analytically and experimentally, we create a weak link model which allows varying the strength of noise versus coherent evolution. Furthermore, by presenting an RCS experiment with 67 qubits at 32 cycles, we demonstrate that the computational cost of our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers, even when accounting for the inevitable presence of noise. Our experimental and theoretical work establishes the existence of transitions to a stable computationally complex phase that is reachable with current quantum processors.

Abstract

An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Prior to fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error mitigation strategies are necessary to continue this growth. Here, we study physical simulation within the seniority-zero electron pairing subspace, which affords both a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model, and an opportunity to validate recently introduced ``purification-based'' error-mitigation strategies. We compare the performance of error mitigation based on doubling quantum resources in time (echo verification) or in space (virtual distillation), on up to $20$ qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques (e.g. post-selection); the gain from error mitigation is seen to increase with the system size. Employing these error mitigation strategies enables the implementation of the largest variational algorithm for a correlated chemistry system to-date. Extrapolating performance from these results allows us to estimate minimum requirements for a beyond-classical simulation of electronic structure. Abstract

The discovery of topological order has revolutionized the understanding of quantum matter in modern physics and provided the theoretical foundation for many quantum error correcting codes. Realizing topologically ordered states has proven to be extremely challenging in both condensed matter and synthetic quantum systems. Here, we prepare the ground state of the toric code Hamiltonian using an efficient quantum circuit on a superconducting quantum processor. We measure a topological entanglement entropy near the expected value of $\ln2$, and simulate anyon interferometry to extract the braiding statistics of the emergent excitations. Furthermore, we investigate key aspects of the surface code, including logical state injection and the decay of the non-local order parameter. Abstract

A promising approach to study condensed-matter systems is to simulate them on an engineered quantum platform. However, achieving the accuracy needed to outperform classical methods has been an outstanding challenge. Here, using eighteen superconducting qubits, we provide an experimental blueprint for an accurate condensed-matter simulator and demonstrate how to probe fundamental electronic properties. We benchmark the underlying method by reconstructing the single-particle band-structure of a one-dimensional wire. We demonstrate nearly complete mitigation of decoherence and readout errors and arrive at an accuracy in measuring energy eigenvalues of this wire with an error of ~0.01 rad, whereas typical energy scales are of order 1 rad. Insight into this unprecedented algorithm fidelity is gained by highlighting robust properties of a Fourier transform, including the ability to resolve eigenenergies with a statistical uncertainty of 1e-4 rad. Furthermore, we synthesize magnetic flux and disordered local potentials, two key tenets of a condensed-matter system. When sweeping the magnetic flux, we observe avoided level crossings in the spectrum, a detailed fingerprint of the spatial distribution of local disorder. Combining these methods, we reconstruct electronic properties of the eigenstates where we observe persistent currents and a strong suppression of conductance with added disorder. Our work describes an accurate method for quantum simulation and paves the way to study novel quantum materials with superconducting qubits.

Abstract

Quantum algorithms offer a dramatic speedup for computational problems in machine learning, material science, and chemistry. However, any near-term realizations of these algorithms will need to be heavily optimized to fit within the finite resources offered by existing noisy quantum hardware. Here, taking advantage of the strong adjustable coupling of gmon qubits, we demonstrate a continuous two-qubit gate set that can provide a 3x reduction in circuit depth as compared to a standard decomposition. We implement two gate families: an iSWAP-like gate to attain an arbitrary swap angle, $\theta$, and a CPHASE gate that generates an arbitrary conditional phase, $\phi$. Using one of each of these gates, we can perform an arbitrary two-qubit gate within the excitation-preserving subspace allowing for a complete implementation of the so-called Fermionic Simulation, or fSim, gate set. We benchmark the fidelity of the iSWAP-like and CPHASE gate families as well as 525 other fSim gates spread evenly across the entire fSim($\theta$, $\phi$) parameter space achieving purity-limited average two-qubit Pauli error of $3.8 \times 10^{-3}$ per fSim gate., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The interplay of interactions and strong disorder can lead to an exotic quantum many-body localized (MBL) phase. Beyond the absence of transport, the MBL phase has distinctive signatures, such as slow dephasing and logarithmic entanglement growth; they commonly result in slow and subtle modification of the dynamics, making their measurement challenging. Here, we experimentally characterize these properties of the MBL phase in a system of coupled superconducting qubits. By implementing phase sensitive techniques, we map out the structure of local integrals of motion in the MBL phase. Tomographic reconstruction of single and two qubit density matrices allowed us to determine the spatial and temporal entanglement growth between the localized sites. In addition, we study the preservation of entanglement in the MBL phase. The interferometric protocols implemented here measure affirmative correlations and allow us to exclude artifacts due to the imperfect isolation of the system. Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs can steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using 49 superconducting qubits, we prepare low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model via coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In 1D, we observe long-range quantum correlations and a ground state fidelity that depends weakly on system sizes. In 2D, we find mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we discover a new spin transport regime in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors, and an essential tool for investigating nonequilibrium quantum phenomena.

16. Hydride Participation in Electron Transfer Processes between Metal Carbonyl Anions and Cations

Abstract

Kinetic studies of selected metal carbonyl anions establish their reactivity as nucleophiles or for electron transfer. The iron species, [HFe(CO)3L]- (L = CO, PPh3), behave as metal-centered nucleophiles when reacted with [M(CO)6]+ (M = Mn, Re). Determination of the deuterium kinetic isotope ratio from kinetic studies of [HFe(CO)4]- and [DFe(CO)4]-, kH/kD = 2.8, indicates primary isotope effects for reaction with Mn(CO)6+. Initial products from transfer of a CO and back transfer of two electrons are observed in some cases. For Re(CO)6+ exclusive formation of HRe(CO)5 as a rhenium product strongly indicates a hydrogen transfer mechanism.

17. Isolation and characterization of glucocorticoid- and cyclic AMP-induced genes in T lymphocytes

Abstract

Glucocorticoids and cyclic AMP exert dramatic effects on the proliferation and viability of murine T lymphocytes through unknown mechanisms. To identify gene products which might be involved in glucocorticoid-induced responses in lymphoid cells, we constructed a lambda cDNA library prepared from murine thymoma WEHI-7TG cells treated for 5 h with glucocorticoids and forskolin. The library was screened with a subtracted cDNA probe enriched for sequences induced by the two drugs, and cDNA clones representing 11 different inducible genes were isolated. The pattern of expression in BALB/c mouse tissues was examined for each cDNA clone. We have identified two clones that hybridized to mRNAs detected exclusively in the thymus. Other clones were identified that demonstrated tissue-specific gene expression in heart, brain, brain and thymus, or lymphoid tissue (spleen and thymus). The kinetics of induction by dexamethasone and forskolin were examined for each gene. The majority of the cDNA clones hybridized to mRNAs that were regulated by glucocorticoids and forskolin, two were regulated only by glucocorticoids, and three hybridized to mRNAs that required both drugs for induction. Inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide resulted in the induction of all mRNAs that were inducible by glucocorticoids. Preliminary sequence analysis of four of the 11 cDNAs suggests that two cDNAs represent previously undescribed genes while two others correspond to the mouse VL30 retrovirus-like element and the mouse homolog of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan core protein.

Abstract

This paper reports on pulmonary dust retention in a man who worked 42 years in the vicinity of an Acheson furnace of a silicon carbide plant and had a carborundum pneumoconiosis. Special attention is paid to the retained silicon carbide fibers in the lung parenchyma. The concentration of silicon carbide fibers longer than 5 µm is 39 300 fibers/mg dry lung. These fibers have a similar morphology to fibers observed in the working environment. The result is compared to pulmonary retention of workers exposed to asbestos.

Abstract

IntroductionFlow diversion for posterior circulation aneurysms using flow diversion constitutes an increasingly common off-label use. Basilar apex aneurysms are daunting lesions that present a significant treatment challenge. This is the largest series of basilar apex aneurysms treated with flow diversion to-date.MethodsA retrospective review of prospectively maintained databases at eight academic institutions was performed from the years 2009 to 2016 to identify patients with basilar apex aneurysms treated with PED placement. Clinical and radiographic data were analyzed with emphasis on occlusion and complication rates.Results16 consecutive patients (median age 62 years, male:female ratio of 1:2.2) underwent 18 procedures to treat 131 posterior circulation aneurysms with either Pipeline Embolization Device or Flow Redirection Endoluminal Device. All but one patient (94%) had a neurologic deficit attributable to the aneurysm prior to their procedure. Four attempts (25%) at flow-diversion were performed for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, with 3 for saccular and 1 for blister morphology.At a median follow-up of 9 months, complete (100%) and near-complete (90%–99%) occlusion was noted in 69% of aneurysms. The rate of partial (<90%) occlusion was higher in patients treated with flow-diversion alone (3/7; 43%) and flow-diversion with coiling (2/9; 22%). However, there was no apparent difference in mRS at follow-up. Retreatment with an additional flow-diverter occurred in patients with larger aneurysm necks (8 and 15 mm) and adjunctive coiling, but had no other attributes in common. Major complications (≥2 points in mRS change) occurred in one patient (6%), who experienced PCA and cerebellar strokes as well as SAH after placement of a single flow diverter. Minor complications (<2 points in mRS change) occurred in 3 additional patients (19%). Symptomatic thromboembolic and hemorrhagic complications occurred in 2/18 of procedures, each (13%); all in the postprocedural setting. In addition, 1/18 procedure resulted in development of perianeurysmal edema and mass effect (6%). Aneurysms with intraluminal thrombus had higher complication rates, though they were not necessarily larger.ConclusionFlow diversion for the treatment of basilar apex aneurysms results in acceptable occlusion rates, and compares favorably with the natural history of the disease. Both primary flow diversion and rescue after clipping/coiling resulted in mRS that was either equal or better than at presentation, and the technology represents a viable alternative to primary coiling or clipping in patients who are poor candidates for these.DisclosuresA. Abstract

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model were conjectured as to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we studied the probability distribution of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center, [Formula: see text]. The first two moments of [Formula: see text] show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments ruled out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs have the potential to steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using up to 49 superconducting qubits, we prepared low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model through coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In one dimension, we observed long-range quantum correlations and a ground-state fidelity of 0.86 for 18 qubits at the critical point. In two dimensions, we found mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we explored transport in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors.
