Abstract

The detailed guide's purpose is to assist educators and community leaders in designing and implementing educational programs to serve student and community needs, and to identify the goals and elements of cooperative vocational education. One chapter describes the necessary characteristics of the teacher-coordinator in such programs, and the advantages of cooperative vocational education to the community and to the students. Two other chapters suggest methods for determining employers' and students' needs for cooperative vocational education and suggest plans for meeting these needs. Three chapters deal with implementing plans for: public relations (including a suggested eight point plan and the use of media); instruction in the school (including five teaching methods and the use of youth organizations); and community laboratories (including criteria for selecting, establishing, and evaluating training stations, and guidelines for complying with appropriate laws). Another chapter analyzes essential elements of the cooperative program including staffing; facilities, equipment, and materials; and program development. A final chapter suggests ways of improving cooperative vocational education in its administrative structure, professional development of teacher-coordinators, instructional materials, and program evaluation. A 70-page appendix displays forms appropriate to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs. (JR)

Abstract

The ratio is a new reaction observable suggested to extract accurately structure information on halo nuclei. It corresponds to the ratio of differential cross sections for scattering and breakup, which is predicted to remove the uncertainty related to the reaction dynamics. We present here the first experimental test of the method for the 11Be + 12C collision at ELab = 20A MeV performed at Texas A&M University. Differential cross sections for scattering and inclusive one-neutron breakup have been measured with the new detector array BlueSTEAl. The ratio of cross sections is very smooth and independent of the projectile-target interaction, which demonstrates the validity of the ratio method. Abstract

Nuclear halos are very exotic quantal structures observed far from stability. Because of their short lifetime, they are mostly studied through reactions. The ratio method offers a new observable: the ratio of angular differential cross sections for breakup and scattering. It is predicted to be much more sensitive to the projectile structure than individual cross sections thanks to its independence of the reaction process. We test this new observable experimentally for the first time considering the collision of 11Be on C at 22.8 MeV/nucleon. We extend this analysis to similar data recently measured on Pb at 19.1 MeV/nucleon. Both analyses confirm the theoretical predictions, which opens the door to a new era in the study of nuclear structure near the neutron dripline. This should prove invaluable in conjunction with the start of FRIB. The ratio method could also be extended to other fields of quantum physics beyond nuclear reactions.

Abstract

Background: Cluster states in $^{13}$N are extremely difficult to measure due to the unavailability of $^{9}$B+$\alpha$ elastic scattering data. Purpose: Using $\beta$-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy of $^{13}$O, clustered states in $^{13}$N can be populated and measured in the 3$\alpha$+p decay channel. Method: One-at-a-time implantation/decay of $^{13}$O was performed with the Texas Active Target Time Projection Chamber (TexAT TPC). 149 $\beta 3\alpha p$ decay events were observed and the excitation function in $^{13}$N reconstructed. Results: Four previously unknown $\alpha$-decaying excited states were observed in $^{13}$N at an excitation energy of 11.3 MeV, 12.4 MeV, 13.1 MeV and 13.7 MeV decaying via the 3$\alpha$+p channel. Conclusion: These states are seen to have a [$^{9}\mathrm{B}(\mathrm{g.s}) \bigotimes \alpha$/ $p+^{12}\mathrm{C}(0_{2}^{+})$], [$^{9}\mathrm{B}(\frac{1}{2}^{+}) \bigotimes \alpha$], [$^{9}\mathrm{B}(\frac{5}{2}^{+}) \bigotimes \alpha$] and [$^{9}\mathrm{B}(\frac{5}{2}^{+}) \bigotimes \alpha$] structure respectively. A previously-seen state at 11.8 MeV was also determined to have a [$p+^{12}\mathrm{C}(\mathrm{g.s.})$/ $p+^{12}\mathrm{C}(0_{2}^{+})$] structure. The overall magnitude of the clustering is not able to be extracted however due to the lack of a total width measurement. Clustered states in $^{13}$N (with unknown magnitude) seem to persist from the addition of a proton to the highly $\alpha$-clustered $^{12}$C. Evidence of the $\frac{1}{2}^{+}$ state in $^{9}$B was also seen to be populated by decays from $^{13}$N$^{\star}$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2302.14111

Abstract

A large-volume Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is the main tracking and particle identification (PID) detector of the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. PID in the TPC is performed via specific energy-loss measurements (dE/dx), which are derived from the average pulse-height distribution of ionization generated by charged-particle tracks traversing the TPC volume. During Runs 1 and 2, until 2018, the gas amplification stage was based on multiwire proportional chambers (MWPC). Signals from the MWPC show characteristic long negative tails after an initial positive peak due to the long ion drift times in the MWPC amplification region. This so-called ion tail can lead to a significant amplitude loss in subsequently measured signals, especially in the high-multiplicity environment of high-energy Pb-Pb collisions, which results in a degradation of the dE/dx resolution. A detailed study of the signal shapes measured with the ALICE TPC with the Ne-CO2 (90-10) and Ar-CO2 (90-10) gas mixtures is presented, and the results are compared with three-dimensional Garfield simulations. The impact of the ion tail on the PID performance is studied employing the ALICE simulation framework and the feasibility of an offline correction procedure to account for the ion tail is demonstrated., Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

Background: The triple-alpha process is a vital reaction in nuclear astrophysics, characterized by two consecutive reactions [$2\alpha\leftrightarrows{^{8}\rm{Be}}(\alpha,\gamma){^{12}\rm{C}}$] that drive carbon formation. The second reaction occurs through the Hoyle state, a 7.65 MeV excited state in ${^{12}\rm{C}}$ with $J^{\pi}=0^{+}$. The rate of the process depends on the radiative width, which can be determined by measuring the branching ratio for electromagnetic decay. Recent measurements by Kib\'edi et al. conflicted with the adopted value and resulted in a significant increase of nearly 50\% in this branching ratio, directly affecting the triple-alpha reaction. Purpose: This work aims to utilize charged-particle spectroscopy with magnetic selection as a means to accurately measure the total radiative branching ratio ($\Gamma_{\rm{rad}}/\Gamma$) of the Hoyle state in $^{12}{\rm C}$. Methods: The Hoyle state in $^{12}{\rm C}$ was populated via $^{12}\rm{C}(\alpha, \alpha')^{12}\rm{C^{*}}$ inelastic scattering. The scattered $\alpha$ particles were detected using a $\Delta$E-E telescope, while the recoiled $^{12}{\rm C}$ ions were identified in a magnetic spectrometer. Results: A radiative branching ratio value of $\Gamma_{\rm{rad}}/\Gamma\times10^{4}=4.0\pm0.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.16({\rm syst.})$ was obtained. Conclusions: The radiative branching ratio for the Hoyle state obtained in this work is in agreement with the original adopted value. Our result suggests that the proton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ spectroscopy result reported by Kib\'edi et al. may be excluded.

Abstract

Background: The $\beta$-delayed proton-decay of $^{13}\mathrm{O}$ has previously been studied, but the direct observation of $\beta$-delayed $\alpha$+$\alpha$+$\alpha$+p decay has not been reported. Purpose: Observing rare 3$\alpha$+p events from the decay of excited states in $^{13}\mathrm{N}^{\star}$ allows for a sensitive probe of exotic highly-clustered configurations in $^{13}$N. Method: To measure the low-energy products following $\beta$-delayed 3$\alpha$p-decay, the TexAT Time Projection Chamber was employed using the one-at-a-time $\beta$-delayed charged-particle spectroscopy technique at the Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University. Results: A total of $1.9 \times 10^{5}$ $^{13}\mathrm{O}$ implantations were made inside the TexAT Time Projection Chamber. 149 3$\alpha$+p events were observed yielding a $\beta$-delayed 3$\alpha+p$ branching ratio of 0.078(6)%. Conclusion: Four previously unknown $\alpha$-decaying states were observed, one with a strong $^{9}\mathrm{B(g.s)}+\alpha$ characteristic at 11.3 MeV, one with a $^{9}\mathrm{B}(\frac{1}{2}^{+})+\alpha$ nature at 12.4 MeV, and another two that are dominated by $^{9}\mathrm{B}({\frac{5}{2}}^{+})+\alpha$ at 13.1 and 13.7 MeV. Population of the $\frac{1}{2}^{+}$ state in $^{9}\mathrm{B}$ has been unambiguously seen, cementing the predicted existence of the mirror-state based on the states observed in $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$.

Abstract

Metal boride nanostructures have shown significant promise for hydrogen storage applications. However, the synthesis of nanoscale metal boride particles is challenging because of their high surface energy, strong inter- and intraplanar bonding, and difficult-to-control surface termination. Here, it is demonstrated that mechanochemical exfoliation of magnesium diboride in zirconia produces 3-4 nm ultrathin MgB2 nanosheets (multilayers) in high yield. High-pressure hydrogenation of these multilayers at 70 MPa and 330 °C followed by dehydrogenation at 390 °C reveals a hydrogen capacity of 5.1 wt%, which is ≈50 times larger than the capacity of bulk MgB2 under the same conditions. This enhancement is attributed to the creation of defective sites by ball-milling and incomplete Mg surface coverage in MgB2 multilayers, which disrupts the stable boron-boron ring structure. The density functional theory calculations indicate that the balance of Mg on the MgB2 nanosheet surface changes as the material hydrogenates, as it is energetically favorable to trade a small number of Mg vacancies in Mg(BH4 )2 for greater Mg coverage on the MgB2 surface. The exfoliation and creation of ultrathin layers is a promising new direction for 2D metal boride/borohydride research with the potential to achieve high-capacity reversible hydrogen storage at more moderate pressures and temperatures.

Abstract

AIMS: Childhood adversities (CAs) predict heightened risks of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive episode (MDE) among people exposed to adult traumatic events. Identifying which CAs put individuals at greatest risk for these adverse posttraumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS) is important for targeting prevention interventions. METHODS: Data came from n = 999 patients ages 18-75 presenting to 29 U.S. emergency departments after a motor vehicle collision (MVC) and followed for 3 months, the amount of time traditionally used to define chronic PTSD, in the Advancing Understanding of Recovery After Trauma (AURORA) study. Six CA types were self-reported at baseline: physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect and bullying. Both dichotomous measures of ever experiencing each CA type and numeric measures of exposure frequency were included in the analysis. Risk ratios (RRs) of these CA measures as well as complex interactions among these measures were examined as predictors of APNS 3 months post-MVC. APNS was defined as meeting self-reported criteria for either PTSD based on the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 and/or MDE based on the PROMIS Depression Short-Form 8b. We controlled for pre-MVC lifetime histories of PTSD and MDE. We also examined mediating effects through peritraumatic symptoms assessed in the emergency department and PTSD and MDE assessed in 2-week and 8-week follow-up surveys. Analyses were carried out with robust Poisson regression models. RESULTS: Most participants (90.9%) reported at least rarely having experienced some CA. Ever experiencing each CA other than emotional neglect was univariably associated with 3-month APNS (RRs = 1.31-1.60). Each CA frequency was also univariably associated with 3-month APNS (RRs = 1.65-2.45). In multivariable models, joint associations of CAs with 3-month APNS were additive, with frequency of emotional abuse (RR = 2.03; 95% CI = 1.43-2.87) and bullying (RR = 1.44; 95% CI = 0.99-2.10) being the strongest predictors. Control variable analyses found that these associations were largely explained by pre-MVC histories of PTSD and MDE. CONCLUSIONS: Although individuals who experience frequent emotional abuse and bullying in childhood have a heightened risk of experiencing APNS after an adult MVC, these associations are largely mediated by prior histories of PTSD and MDE.

There is no definitive explanation for this stability due to the limited understanding of the structure of LiPON. We provide a structural model of RF-sputtered LiPON via experimental and computational spectroscopic methods. Information about the short-range structure results from 1D and 2D solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance experiments investigating chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar interactions. These results are compared with first principles chemical shielding calculations of Li-P-O/N crystals and ab initio molecular dynamics-generated amorphous LiPON models to unequivocally identify the glassy structure as primarily isolated phosphate monomers with N incorporated in both apical and as bridging sites in phosphate dimers. Structural results suggest LiPON's stability is a result of its glassy character. Free-standing LiPON films are produced that exhibit a high degree of flexibility highlighting the unique mechanical properties of glassy materials.

Abstract

The highly unfavorable thermodynamics of direct aluminum hydrogenation can be overcome by stabilizing alane within a nanoporous bipyridine-functionalized covalent triazine framework (AlH3 @CTF-bipyridine). This material and the counterpart AlH3 @CTF-biphenyl rapidly desorb H2 between 95 and 154 °C, with desorption complete at 250 °C. Sieverts measurements, 27 Al MAS NMR and 27 Al{1 H} REDOR experiments, and computational spectroscopy reveal that AlH3 @CTF-bipyridine dehydrogenation is reversible at 60 °C under 700 bar hydrogen, >10 times lower pressure than that required to hydrogenate bulk aluminum. DFT calculations and EPR measurements support an unconventional mechanism whereby strong AlH3 binding to bipyridine results in single-electron transfer to form AlH2 (AlH3 )n clusters. The resulting size-dependent charge redistribution alters the dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation thermochemistry, suggesting a novel strategy to enable reversibility in high-capacity metal hydrides.

Abstract

PurposeAfter chemotherapy for breast cancer, most women will recover some ovarian function, but the timing and extent of this recovery are poorly understood. We studied post-chemotherapy ovarian recovery in women with and without a history of ovarian suppression during chemotherapy.MethodsReproductive age breast cancer patients who were seen prior to chemotherapy for fertility preservation consult were consented for follow-up ovarian function assessment (every 3-6 months after chemotherapy) with antral follicle count (AFC) in this prospective cohort study. We restricted our analysis to those with menses present after chemotherapy. Box plots were used to demonstrate the change in follow-up AFC versus time elapsed after chemotherapy. A mixed effects regression model was used to assess differences in AFC.ResultsEighty-eight patients with a history of newly diagnosed breast cancer were included. Forty-five patients (51%) had ovarian suppression with GnRH agonist (GnRHa) during chemotherapy. AFC recovery appeared to plateau at 1 year after completing chemotherapy at a median of 40% of pre-chemotherapy AFC. After adjustment for age, initial AFC, cyclophosphamide exposure, combined hormonal contraceptive (CHC) use, and tamoxifen use, AFC recovered faster and to a greater degree for those women who underwent GnRHa therapy for ovarian protection during chemotherapy (P = 0.032).ConclusionsWomen with menses after chemotherapy for breast cancer appear to recover their full potential AFC 1 year after their last chemotherapy dose. Treatment with GnRHa during chemotherapy is associated with a higher degree of AFC recovery. The findings of this study can aid in counseling patients prior to chemotherapy about expectations for ovarian recovery and planning post-treatment fertility preservation care to maximize reproductive potential when pre-treatment fertility preservation care is not possible or has limited oocyte yield.

Abstract

The kinetics of ligand exchange between the free oxalate ion, C2 O4 2- , and the bis-oxalato NpV complex, [NpO2 (C2 O4 )2 ]3- , in aqueous solution are reported by using 13 C and 17 O NMR spectroscopy methods. Rates of exchange were measured in the pH regime of 6.5-9.0, at which speciation is shown to be suitably simple. Because the neptunium(V) complex is paramagnetic, the rates of ligand exchange were estimated by following the width of the 13 C and 17 O signals assigned to the free oxalate ion in solution and by applying the Swift-Connick method for measuring rates of exchange. A set of experiments were conducted in which pH and total oxalate concentration were varied, and the linear dependence of the rate on these parameters was demonstrated. Variable-temperature NMR spectroscopy was also performed to measure activation parameters of complexation. At pH8.0 there is almost no dependence on temperature, which is interpreted to indicate that hydrolysis is coupled to ligand exchange under these conditions.

Abstract

Acetamide diethylphosphonate (AcPhos)-functionalized silica has been shown to have a high affinity for U(vi) in pH 2-3 nitric acid. Previous work with AcPhos-functionalized silica has focused on actinide and lanthanide extraction under various conditions, but has shown poor reproducibility in the functionalization process. For this work, four AcPhos-functionalized SBA-15 materials were synthesized and evaluated based on their U(vi) sorption capacity and their stability in nitric acid. Materials synthesized using pyridine as a basic catalyst were shown to form a greater fraction of polymeric structures at the silica surface, which correlated with higher structural integrity upon contact with acidic solutions. Single-pulse 31P and 1H NMR spectra of these materials show evidence of phosphonic acid groups, as well as hydrogen-bonding interactions either between ligands or with the silica surface. Additionally, these materials were found to have significantly higher U(vi) sorption capacities and Keq values than the materials synthesized without pyridine, most likely due to the ion-exchange properties of the phosphonic acid groups. The 31P-31P DQ-DRENAR NMR technique was used to compare the average strength of dipolar coupling interactions between phosphorus atoms for the four materials. Because the strength of dipolar coupling interactions depends on the number and proximity of neighboring spins, this technique provides information about the average density of ligands on the surface. The conventional functionalization procedure yielded materials with the lowest average surface ligand density, while those using extended reaction times and the pyridine base catalyst yielded materials with higher surface ligand densities.
