5. Analyzing the Dropout Phenomenon: A Qualitative Study on the Lived Early School Experiences of Students with Learning Disabilities and Its Impact on High School Completion

Abstract

Today's high school student faces several complex experiences that impact his or her decision to stay in school. These factors, often a culmination of school events beginning in the elementary years, are correlated to a student's likelihood of graduating from high school. Moreover, students with disabilities face additional factors that impact the likelihood of completing high school. Students with disabilities are less likely to earn a college degree, more likely to be underemployed or on public assistance, earn less income, and have higher rates of incarceration after leaving school. Not surprisingly, students with learning disabilities drop out at higher rates when compared to their non-disabled peers. This dissertation addresses the current state of the dropout phenomenon among students with learning disabilities. It examines the early school experiences that students with learning disabilities face in order to add qualitative data to the existing quantitative research that studies students with learning disabilities who drop out. This dissertation utilized a semi-structured interview protocol and a review of student and school records and solicited the input of eight study participants at one traditional high school in Southern California. Findings resulted in identifying four of the eight students as "At-risk" for school failure, and they were grouped accordingly. Students were asked questions related to their elementary, middle and high school experiences with relation to potential graduation outcomes. The Student Voice Theory guided the theoretical framework of this study. It was supported by a secondary framework, the Self Determination Theory, which guided the findings addressing the study sub-questions. The results of the study concluded with three major themes addressing the research question and two major themes addressing the sub-questions. Findings within the themes resulted in subthemes within the themes. Overwhelmingly, the study results indicated relational experiences as being paramount to a student's success, or perceived success, in high school. Additional findings indicated that students found school transitions and peer relationships to be salient factors in their success. Students in the "At-risk" cohort identified additional factors, learning difficulties and negative school transitions, as being significant. Findings resulted in the need for a success model to address the prevalent factors necessary to ensure high school completion for students who are learning disabled, and for those who are at-risk for failure. 14. Work-In-Progress: Facilitating Engineering Students' Entrepreneurship Through Self-Regulated Learning Instructions.

Abstract

This Work-in-Progress study investigates the implementation of an innovated engineering entrepreneurship education program integrated with self-regulated learning (SRL) practice at a southeastern public university. Entrepreneurship education programs have become prevalent across engineering schools nationally and globally. While SRL demonstrates positive effects on students' learning, little is known about how to integrate SRL in teaching that facilitates engineering students' learning in entrepreneurship. Through a quasi-experimental study, we assume that students who participate in SRL activities will improve their entrepreneurial skillset and mindset and demonstrate improved learning outcomes in an entrepreneurship course. Research has suggested that SRL is beneficial for students to develop entrepreneurial skills [1]. In other words, effective entrepreneurs regulate their cognition, metacognition, and motivation to adapt to new environments and unexpected challenges, make appropriate decisions, and overcome obstacles, which overlap with the essential elements in SRL [2], [3]. SRL describes a phase-like learning model that includes students' goal setting and planning before a task, strategic actions and monitoring during a task, and self-reflection and evaluation after a task [4]. To understand how SRL plays a role in understanding and fostering engineering students' learning in entrepreneurship, we are conducting an ongoing intervention study that provides students with SRL support in addition to the regular teaching activities. Our main purposes of the study include 1) contextualizing SRL into the entrepreneurship course; 2) providing students with SRL practice to support their learning in entrepreneurship; 3) identifying and assessing the learning and psychological outcomes related to SRL that indicate students' growth in entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial mindset. The work-in-progress study is the pilot study of the ongoing intervention study. Students receive self-reflection relevance writing prompts throughout the course. The writing prompts are designed to facilitate students' self-regulatory skills in cognition, metacognition, and motivation in a way that cultivates students' learning and application of entrepreneurial knowledge and skills. Specifically, students self-reflect upon their learning experiences related to the topics taught in the entrepreneurship course and potentially form entrepreneur identities from connecting their real-life experiences and the learning content in the course. Currently, we have started implementing the writing prompts in an introductory entrepreneurship course to test our study materials in Spring 2022. We plan to conduct a full-scale study in Fall 2022. Data include pre- and post-entrepreneurial knowledge familiarity tests, entrepreneurial self-efficacy scales, creative mindset scales, an epistemic curiosity scale, and students' written self-reflection responses. We expect results to show increases in students' learning and the impact of SRL on students' learning in entrepreneurship-related concepts and application through self-reflection in the full-scale study. The findings of this work will demonstrate the impact of SRL in an entrepreneurial learning context using theory-grounded pedagogical practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BACKGROUND Degludec is an ultralong-Acting, once-daily basal insulin that is approved for use in adults, adolescents, and children with diabetes. Previous open-label studies have shown lower day-To-day variability in the glucose-lowering effect and lower rates of hypoglycemia among patients who received degludec than among those who received basal insulin glargine. However, data are lacking on the cardiovascular safety of degludec. METHODS We randomly assigned 7637 patients with type 2 diabetes to receive either insulin degludec (3818 patients) or insulin glargine U100 (3819 patients) once daily between dinner and bedtime in a double-blind, treat-To-Target, event-driven cardiovascular outcomes trial. The primary composite outcome in the time-To-event analysis was the first occurrence of an adjudicated major cardiovascular event (death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke) with a prespecified noninferiority margin of 1.3. Adjudicated severe hypoglycemia, as defined by the American Diabetes Association, was the prespecified, multiplicity-Adjusted secondary outcome. RESULTS Of the patients who underwent randomization, 6509 (85.2%) had established cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, or both. At baseline, the mean age was 65.0 years, the mean duration of diabetes was 16.4 years, and the mean (±SD) glycated hemoglobin level was 8.4±1.7%; 83.9% of the patients were receiving insulin. The primary outcome occurred in 325 patients (8.5%) in the degludec group and in 356 (9.3%) in the glargine group (hazard ratio, 0.91; 95% confidence interval, 0.78 to 1.06; P

Abstract

Pediatric palliative care aims to enhance life and decrease suffering of children and adolescents living with life-threatening conditions and their loved ones. Oncology nurses are instrumental in providing palliative care to pediatric oncology populations. This paper describes pediatric palliative care and provides an overview of literature related to the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual domains of palliative nursing care for children and adolescents with cancer. Nurses can provide optimal palliative care by accounting for children's understanding of death, encouraging early initiation of palliative care services, and improving utilization of pediatric palliative care in cancer settings. Specific roles of registered nurses and advanced practice nurses in pediatric palliative care will be addressed. Recommendations for future research are made to further advance the science of pediatric palliative care and decrease suffering for children and teens with cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on her experience as the performing arts adviser with Service Children's Education (SCE) for the British Ministry of Defence, the author discusses partnerships with various arts organizations including Creative Partnerships, Arts Awards, and Shakespeare's Globe. Abstract

East Lothian is a county Situated to the east of Edinburgh, bounded on the north and east by the Firth of Forth and the North Sea, and on the south by Berwickshire. Joy Harris is a counsellor who has successfully managed to launch a new service called Eclipse, funded by the East Lothian Healthcare Coop the Scottish equivalent of PCTs to provide a primary care counselling service throughout the county. East Lothian is one of the few areas in Scotland where counselling has been given priority for recurring funding. Although awareness is increasing in Scotland about the value of counselling in primary care, in most areas provision is still ad hoc, dwindling or non-existent, though a few stalwart FHCP members are determined to change that.
