Research on organizational aspirations has used various representations of firm-level aspirations and based those representations on various performance measures. To advance our understanding of the measurement of aspirations, we empirically compare three different aspiration models defined using six different performance measures to explain three different firm outcomes (financial misrepresentation, R&D spending, and income-stream uncertainty). The results moderately support a model with separate historical and social aspirations over a model of aspirations that systematically switches between the two. The results strongly support both the separate and switching models over a model where aspirations constitute a weighted average of historical and social comparisons, the model associated most directly with Cyert and March's original specification. We discuss the implications of these results and highlight directions for future research. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Objective: To determine and compare failure, re-operation, and complication rates of all generations and techniques of autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI).Methods: A systematic review of multiple medical databases was performed according to PRISMA guidelines. Levels I-IV evidence were included. Generations of ACI and complications after ACI were explicitly defined. All subject and defect demographic data were analyzed. Modified Coleman Methodology Scores (MCMSs) were calculated for all studies.Results: 82 studies were identified for inclusion (5276 subjects were analyzed; 6080 defects). Ninety percent of the studies in this review were rated poor according to the MCMS. There were 305 failures overall (5.8% subjects; mean time to failure 22 months). Failure rate was highest with periosteal ACI (PACI). Failure rates after PACI, collagen-membrane cover ACI (CACI), second generation, and all-arthroscopic, second-generation ACI were 7.7%, 1.5%, 3.3%, and 0.83%, respectively. The failure rate of arthrotomy-based ACI was 6.1% vs 0.83% for all-arthroscopic ACI. Overall rate of re-operation was 33%. Re-operation rate after PACI, CACI, and second-generation ACI was 36%, 40%, and 18%, respectively. However, upon exclusion of planned second-look arthroscopy, re-operation rate was highest after PACI. Unplanned re-operation rates after PACI, CACI, second-generation, and all-arthroscopic second-generation ACI were 27%, 5%, 5%, and 1.4%, respectively. Low numbers of patients undergoing third-generation ACI precluded comparative analysis of this group.Conclusions: Failure rate after all ACI generations is low (1.5-7.7%). Failure rate is highest with PACI, and lower with CACI and second-generation techniques. One out of three ACI patients underwent a re-operation. Unplanned re-operations are seen most often following PACI. Hypertrophy and delamination is most commonly seen after PACI. Arthrofibrosis is most commonly seen after arthrotomy-based ACI. Use of a collagen-membrane cover, second-generation techniques, and all-arthroscopic, second-generation approaches have reduced the failure, complication, and re-operation rate after ACI. Background: The purpose of the present study was to determine (1) whether the current literature supports the choice of using autologous chondrocyte implantation over other cartilage procedures with regard to clinical outcome, magnetic resonance imaging, arthroscopic assessment, and durability of treatment, (2) whether the current literature supports the use of a specific generation of autologous chondrocyte implantation, and (3) whether there are patient-specific and defect-specific factors that influence outcomes after autologous chondrocyte implantation in comparison with other cartilage repair or restoration procedures.Methods: We conducted a systematic review of multiple databases in which we evaluated Level-I and II studies comparing autologous chondrocyte implantation with another cartilage repair or restoration technique as well as comparative intergenerational studies of autologous chondrocyte implantation. The methodological quality of studies was evaluated with use of Delphi list and modified Coleman methodology scores. Effect size analysis was performed for all outcome measures.Results: Thirteen studies (917 subjects) were included. Study methodological quality improved with later publication dates. The mean modified Coleman methodology score was 54 (of 100). Patients underwent autologous chondrocyte implantation (n = 604), microfracture (n = 271), or osteochondral autograft (n = 42). All surgical techniques demonstrated improvement in comparison with the preoperative status. Three of seven studies showed better clinical outcomes after autologous chondrocyte implantation in comparison with microfracture after one to three years of follow-up, whereas one study showed better outcomes two years after microfracture and three other studies showed no difference in these treatments after one to five years. Clinical outcomes after microfracture deteriorated after eighteen to twenty-four months (in three of seven studies). Autologous chondrocyte implantation and osteochondral autograft demonstrated equivalent short-term clinical outcomes, although there was more rapid improvement after osteochondral autograft (two studies). Although outcomes were equivalent between first and second-generation autologous chondrocyte implantation and between open and arthroscopic autologous chondrocyte implantation, complication rates were higher with open, periosteal-cover, first-generation autologous chondrocyte implantation (four studies). Younger patients with a shorter preoperative duration of symptoms and fewer prior surgical procedures had the best outcomes after both autologous chondrocyte implantation and microfracture. A defect size of >4 cm(2) was the only factor predictive of better outcomes when autologous chondrocyte implantation was compared with a non-autologous chondrocyte implantation surgical technique.Conclusions: Cartilage repair or restoration in the knee provides short-term success with microfracture, autologous chondrocyte implantation, or osteochondral autograft. In many low- and middle-income countries, school children consume untreated water that has been pumped into storage tanks. The water is often of poor quality and consumption can cause gastrointestinal illnesses resulting in missed school days, growth stunting, and cognitive impairment. This study deployed a silver-ceramic technology (MadiDrop) to disinfect drinking water in school storage tanks. While silver ionization is effective at the household scale, relatively little research has been conducted on its effectiveness at the community scale. To address this gap, we assessed disinfection via MadiDrop at three schools that serve vulnerable populations in rural India. Tank inflow and treated outflow samples were tested for total coliforms (TCs) and Escherichia coli (EC). TC was significantly reduced overall and in two of three intervention tanks. Compared to the baseline, reductions in TC were significant in all three tanks and overall, while EC reductions were significant overall and in two of three tanks. TC reduction was negatively correlated with silver concentration and tank residence time, and silver concentrations were maintained below the drinking water quality guideline. Mental health and wellness influence patients with hip pain and dysfunction secondary to Femoroacetabular Impingement Syndrome, acetabular dysplasia, and labral injury. Disorders of mental wellness may impact hip preservation surgery patients both before and after surgery. Major depression and generalized anxiety are the two most common diagnoses that affect hip preservation surgery patients. There are dozens of unique questionnaires that can subjectively and objectively characterize the mental health of patients with hip pain. Pain threshold and pain tolerance are two issues that must be recognized to optimally predict treatment outcome in an informed consent shared decision-making discussion. Patient expectations may also significantly influence preoperative symptoms and postoperative outcome. Pain threshold, pain tolerance, and patient expectations are entities traditionally viewed as qualitative and unmeasurable. However, many valid and reliable methods exist to quantitatively assess these patient-specific variables. Recent original research and synthetic review publications have consistently concluded similar findings: patients with disorders of mental wellness generally have lower preoperative patient-reported outcome scores, do improve following surgery, albeit to a lesser magnitude than non-mental disorder patients, and ultimately have lower postoperative scores at their final follow. As with most orthopaedic surgery literature, the investigation of mental health and hip preservation is primarily via retrospective level four evidence with small numbers of patients from a single centre and single surgeon at short-term follow-up. Aims: The aim of this study was to gain a consensus for best practice of the assessment and management of children with idiopathic toe walking (ITW) in order to provide a benchmark for practitioners and guide the best consistent care., Methods: An established Delphi approach with predetermined steps and degree of agreement based on a standardized protocol was used to determine consensus. The steering group members and Delphi survey participants included members from the British Society of Children's Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS) and the Association of Paediatric Chartered Physiotherapists (APCP). The statements included definition, assessment, treatment indications, nonoperative and operative interventions, and outcomes. Descriptive statistics were used for analysis of the Delphi survey results. The AGREE checklist was followed for reporting the results., Results: A total of 227 participants (54% APCP and 46% BSCOS members) completed the first round, and 222 participants (98%) completed the second round. Out of 54 proposed statements included in the first round Delphi, 17 reached 'consensus in', no statements reached 'consensus out', and 37 reached 'no consensus'. These 37 statements were then discussed, reworded, amalgamated, or deleted before the second round Delphi of 29 statements. A total of 12 statements reached 'consensus in', four 'consensus out', and 13 'no consensus'. In the final consensus meeting, 13 statements were voted upon. Five were accepted, resulting in a total of 31 approved statements., Conclusion: In the aspects of practice where sufficient evidence is not available, a consensus statement can provide a strong body of opinion that acts as a benchmark for excellence in clinical care. This statement can assist clinicians managing children with ITW to ensure consistent and reliable practice, and reduce geographical variability in practice and outcomes. Purpose of Review: To evaluate the current evidence and literature on treatment options for proximal hamstring injuries., Recent Findings: Patients with 3-tendon complete tears with greater than 2 cm of retraction have worse outcomes and higher complication rates compared to those with less severe injuries. Endoscopic and open proximal hamstring repair both have favorable patient reported outcomes at 5-year follow up. Proximal hamstring repair in patients who are male, with isolated semimembranosus injury, and have proximal hamstring free tendon rupture are more likely to have earlier return to sports. The Parisian Hamstring Avulsion Score (PHAS) is a validated patient-reported outcome measure to predict return to sports. Proximal hamstring injuries may occur in both elite and recreational athletes and may present with varying degrees of chronicity and severity. Injuries occur most commonly during forceful eccentric contraction of the hamstrings and often present with ischial tuberosity tenderness, ecchymosis, and hamstring weakness. Treatment decision-making is dictated by the tendons involved and chronicity. Many proximal hamstring injuries can be successfully treated with non-surgical measures. However, operative treatment of appropriately indicated proximal hamstring tendon injuries can result in significantly better functional outcomes and faster and more reliable return to sports compared to nonoperative treatment. Both endoscopic and open surgical repair techniques show high satisfaction levels and excellent patient-reported outcomes at short- and mid-term follow-up. Postoperative rehabilitation protocols vary across the literature and ongoing study is needed to clarify the optimal program, though emphasis on eccentric hamstring strengthening may be beneficial., (© 2024. Viral impacts on microbial populations depend on interaction phenotypes-including viral traits spanning the adsorption rate, latent period, and burst size. The latent period is a key viral trait in lytic infections. Defined as the time from viral adsorption to viral progeny release, the latent period of bacteriophage is conventionally inferred via one-step growth curves in which the accumulation of free virus is measured over time in a population of infected cells. Developed more than 80 years ago, one-step growth curves do not account for cellular-level variability in the timing of lysis, potentially biasing inference of viral traits. Here, we use nonlinear dynamical models to understand how individual-level variation of the latent period impacts virus-host dynamics. Our modeling approach shows that inference of the latent period via one-step growth curves is systematically biased-generating estimates of shorter latent periods than the underlying population-level mean. The bias arises because variability in lysis timing at the cellular level leads to a fraction of early burst events, which are interpreted, artefactually, as an earlier mean time of viral release. We develop a computational framework to estimate latent period variability from joint measurements of host and free virus populations. Our computational framework recovers both the mean and variance of the latent period within simulated infections including realistic measurement noise. This work suggests that reframing the latent period as a distribution to account for variability in the population will improve the study of viral traits and their role in shaping microbial populations.IMPORTANCEQuantifying viral traits-including the adsorption rate, burst size, and latent period-is critical to characterize viral infection dynamics and develop predictive models of viral impacts across scales from cells to ecosystems. Here, we revisit the gold standard of viral trait estimation-the one-step growth curve-to assess the extent to which assumptions at the core of viral infection dynamics lead to ongoing and systematic biases in inferences of viral traits. We show that latent period estimates obtained via one-step growth curves systematically underestimate the mean latent period and, in turn, overestimate the rate of viral killing at population scales. By explicitly incorporating trait variability into a dynamical inference framework that leverages both virus and host time series, we provide a practical route to improve estimates of the mean and variance of viral traits across diverse virus-microbe systems., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.
