Bulk bismuth has a complex Landau spectrum. The small effective masses and the large g-factors are anisotropic. The chemical potential drifts at high magnetic fields. Moreover, twin boundaries further complexify the interpretation of the data by producing extra anomalies in the extreme quantum limit. Here, we present a study of angle dependence of magnetoresistance up to 65 T in bismuth complemented with Nernst, ultrasound, and magneto-optic data. All observed anomalies can be explained in a single-particle picture of a sample consisting of two twinned crystals tilted by 108$^{\circ}$ and with two adjacent crystals keeping their own chemical potentials despite a shift between chemical potentials as large as 68 meV at 65 T. This implies an energy barrier between adjacent twinned crystals reminiscent of a metal-semiconductor Schottky barrier or a p-n junction. We argue that this barrier is built by accumulating charge carriers of opposite signs across a twin boundary., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

The simultaneous occurrence of electric-field controlled superconductivity and spin-orbit interaction makes two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) constructed from perovskite transition metal oxides promising candidates for the next generation of spintronics and quantum computing. It is, however, essential to understand the electronic bands thoroughly and verify the predicted electronic states experimentally in these 2DES to advance technological applications. Here, we present novel insights into the electronic states of the 2DES at oxide interfaces through comprehensive investigations of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in two different systems: EuO/KTaO$_3$ (EuO/KTO) and LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ (LAO/STO). To accurately resolve these oscillations, we conducted transport measurements in high magnetic fields up to 60 T and low temperatures down to 100 mK. For 2D confined electrons at both interfaces, we observed a progressive increase of oscillations frequency and cyclotron mass with the magnetic field. We interpret these intriguing findings by considering the existence of non-trivial electronic bands, for which the $E-k$ dispersion incorporates both linear and parabolic dispersion relations. In addition to providing experimental evidence for topological-like electronic states in KTO-2DES and STO-2DES, the unconventional oscillations presented in this study establish a new paradigm for quantum oscillations in 2DES based on perovskite transition metal oxides, where the oscillations frequency exhibits quadratic dependence on the magnetic field.

A flattened electronic band is one of several possible routes for increasing the strength of the pairing interactions in a superconductor. With this in mind, we show here that thermodynamic measurements of the high-Tc cuprates reveal an appreciably stronger electron correlation-driven flattening of the quasiparticle bands than has previously been indicated. Specifically, we find that thermodynamic measurements indicate an electronic entropy in excess of that that can be accounted for by the value of the universal Fermi velocity inferred from photoemission experiments. The observed band flattening implies that the Van Hove singularity features prominently in calorimetry measurements, causing it undermine prior arguments for a divergence in the renormalization of the effective mass near a critical doping $p^\ast$ based on calorimetry measurements. The band flattening is also sufficient to drive the cuprates into a strong pairing regime where the maximum transition temperature becomes constrained by phase fluctuations., Comment: 7 pages including 4 figures

Beyond the quantum limit, many-body effects are expected to induce unusual electronic phase transitions. Materials possessing metallic ground states with strong interactions between localized and itinerant electronic states are natural candidates for the realization of such quantum phases. However, the electronic correlations responsible for increasing the likelihood of novel phases simultaneously place the quantum limit beyond the reach of laboratory magnets. Here we propose these difficulties can be surmounted in materials with strong correlations and insulating ground states. Strong correlations in insulators and high magnetic fields conspire to fill Landau levels in the reverse order compared to conventional metals, such that the lowest Landau level is the first observed. Consequently, the quantum limit in strongly correlated insulators is reached in reverse and at fields accessible in laboratories. Quantum oscillations measured at high fields in YbB12 are shown to have features consistent with the reverse quantum limit. These include how quantum oscillations move in lock step with the angular evolution of the insulator-metal transition and the field dependence of the quantum oscillation frequency. We argue that close to the insulator-metal transition, the insulating state should be viewed through the lens of a magnetic field-induced electronic instability affecting the lowest Landau level states in the quantum limit.

The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed by superconducting critical current and magnetoresistance within superconducting transition under direction-dependent in-plane magnetic fields, exhibits a $C_2$ rotational symmetry which breaks the $C_4$ rotational symmetry of the square-planar lattice. Furthermore, by performing detailed examination of the angular dependent upper critical fields at temperatures down to 0.5 K with high-magnetic pulsed-fields, we observe a crossover from two-dimensional to three-dimensional superconducting states which can be manipulated by the ionic size fluctuations in the rare-earth spacer layer. Such a large degree of controllability is desired for tailoring strongly two/three-dimensional superconductors and navigating various pairing landscapes for a better understanding of the correlation between reduced dimensionality and unconventional pairing. We report the discovery of CeLiBi$_2$, the first example of a material in the tetragonal Ce$TX_2$ ($T$ = transition metal; $X$ = pnictogen) family wherein an alkali cation replaces the typical transition metal. Magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction measurements are consistent with a crystal-field $\Gamma_6$ ground state Kramers doublet that orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N = 3.4$ K with an incommensurate propagation wave vector ${\bf{k}} = (0, 0.0724(4), 0.5)$ that generates a nanometric modulation of the magnetic structure. The best model of the ordered state is an elliptical cycloid with Ce moments primarily residing in the $ab$ plane. This is highly unusual, as all other $\Gamma_6$ Ce$TX_2$ members order ferromagnetically. Further, we observe an atypical hard-axis metamagnetic transition at $2$ T in magnetostriction, magnetization, and resistivity measurements. CeLiBi$_2$ is a rare example of a highly conductive material with dominant skew scattering leading to a large anomalous Hall effect. Quantum oscillations with five frequencies arise in magnetostriction and magnetic susceptibility data to $T = 30$ K and $\mu_0H = 55$ T, which indicate small Fermi pockets of light carriers with effective masses as low as 0.07$m_e$. Density functional theory calculations indicate that square-net Dirac-like Bi$-p$ bands are responsible for these ultralight carriers. Having been a ground for various topological fermionic phases, the family of ZrSiS-type 111 materials has been under experimental and theoretical investigations. Within this family of materials, the subfamily LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide elements) is gaining interests in recent times as the strong correlation effects and magnetism arising from the 4f electrons of the lanthanides can provide an important platform to study the linking between topology, magnetism, and correlation. In this paper, we report the systematic study of the electronic structure of SmSbTe - a member of the LnSbTe subfamily - by utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in conjunction with first-principles calculations, transport, and magnetic measurements. Our experimental results identify multiple Dirac nodes forming the nodal-lines along the G- X and Z- R directions in the bulk Brillouin zone (BZ) as predicted by our theoretical calculations. A surface Dirac-like state that arises from the square net plane of the Sb atoms is also observed at the X point of the surface BZ. A toroidal dipole moment appears independent of the electric and magnetic dipole moment in the multipole expansion of electrodynamics. It arises naturally from vortex-like arrangements of spins. Observing and controlling spontaneous long-range orders of toroidal moments are highly promising for spintronics but remain challenging. Here we demonstrate that a vortex-like spin configuration with a staggered arrangement of toroidal moments, a ferritoroidal state, is realized in a chiral triangular-lattice magnet BaCoSiO4. Upon applying a magnetic field, we observe multi-stair toroidal transitions correlating directly with metamagnetic transitions. We establish a first-principles microscopic Hamiltonian that explains both the formation of toroidal states and the metamagnetic toroidal transition as a combined effect of the magnetic frustration and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions allowed by the crystallographic chirality in BaCoSiO4.

A central question in the underdoped cuprates pertains to the nature of the pseudogap ground state. A conventional metallic ground state of the pseudogap region has been argued to host quantum oscillations upon destruction of the superconducting order parameter by modest magnetic fields. Here we use low applied measurement currents and millikelvin temperatures on ultra-pure single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to unearth an unconventional quantum vortex matter ground state characterized by vanishing electrical resistivity, magnetic hysteresis, and non-ohmic electrical transport characteristics beyond the highest laboratory accessible static fields. A new model of the pseudogap ground state is now required to explain quantum oscillations that are hosted by the bulk quantum vortex matter state without experiencing sizeable additional damping in the presence of a large maximum superconducting gap; possibilities include a pair density wave., Comment: PNAS Commentary 'Fragile superconductivity at high magnetic fields' by Michael R. An understanding of the missing antinodal electronic excitations in the pseudogap state is essential for uncovering the physics of the underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors. The majority of high temperature experiments performed thus far, however, have been unable to discern whether the antinodal states are rendered unobservable due to their damping, or whether they vanish due to their gapping. Here we distinguish between these two scenarios by using quantum oscillations to examine whether the small Fermi surface pocket, found to occupy only 2% of the Brillouin zone in the underdoped cuprates, exists in isolation against a majority of completely gapped density of states spanning the antinodes, or whether it is thermodynamically coupled to a background of ungapped antinodal states. We find that quantum oscillations associated with the small Fermi surface pocket exhibit a signature sawtooth waveform characteristic of an isolated two-dimensional Fermi surface pocket. This finding reveals that the antinodal states are destroyed by a hard gap that extends over the majority of the Brillouin zone, placing strong constraints on a drastic underlying origin of quasiparticle disappearance over almost the entire Brillouin zone in the pseudogap regime.

High magnetic fields have revealed a surprisingly small Fermi-surface in underdoped cuprates, possibly resulting from Fermi-surface reconstruction due to an order parameter that breaks translational symmetry of the crystal lattice. A crucial issue concerns the doping extent of this state and its relationship to the principal pseudogap and superconducting phases. We employ pulsed magnetic field measurements on the cuprate HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+\delta}$ to identify signatures of Fermi surface reconstruction from a sign change of the Hall effect and a peak in the temperature-dependent planar resistivity. We trace the termination of Fermi-surface reconstruction to two hole concentrations where the superconducting upper critical fields are found to be enhanced. One of these points is associated with the pseudogap end-point near optimal doping.
